On today's PoM podcast I share one of the most impactful books for me when it comes to being a protector for my families and having situational awareness. Left of Bang by Patrick Van Horne and Jason A. Riley outlines the principles of the US Marine Corps' Combat Hunter program. This program gives soldiers a way to identify and communicate pre-incident indicators. Being able to do this before an attack, or left of bang (as pictured on a linear timeline) can mean life or death in combat. William Aprill of Aprill Risk Consulting on The UNTHINKABLE This might be our most important episode on mindset yet. We sit down with renowned clinical expert on violent criminals, mental health professional William Aprill, and he explains why good people often fail to prepare adequately for encountering EVIL people by failing to understand them and what they are capable of doing. William Aprill explains that violent criminals don't think like you, don't value the things you do, aren't motivated by what motivates you, and consequently aren't you. Failing to recognize that ahead of time and preparing your response can mean injury or DEATH. About William Aprill: William Aprill is a licensed mental health professional with over 15 years experience across the continuum of care. He presently maintains a private practice and consultancy specializing in post-traumatic interventions and other disciplines. William is a former deputy sheriff (Orleans Parish, LA, Criminal Sheriff’s Office) and Special Deputy US Marshal (Eastern District of Louisiana). He is a decorated competitive shooter and has taught civilian, law enforcement, and military personnel in various fighting skills since 1990. William maintains an active schedule both as student and teacher, having been instructor-rated by several top-tier trainers and studying under many of the most influential members of the combative arts community. Under the auspices of Aprill Risk Consulting, William has presented his material on violent criminals and their decision-making, defensive incident aftermath, mindset development and defensive preparedness locally and nationally, including at the Annual Conference of the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI), Rangemaster Tactical Conference, Tactical Response Alumni Weekend, and at Paul-E-Palooza, the memorial conference and fundraiser for the family of the late Paul Gomez. My first guest on the Tami Jackson Show* tonight will be Michael Franzese. Michael Franzese grew up as the son of the notorious Underboss of New York's violent and feared Colombo crime family. At his most affluent, he generated an estimated $5 to $8 million per week from legal and illegal businesses. It was a life filled with power, luxury…and deadly violence. In 1986, mafia boss, Michael Franzese was named one of the biggest money earners the mob had seen since Al Capone, by Vanity Fair. At the age of 35, Fortune Magazine listed him as number 18 on its list of the “Fifty Most Wealthy and Powerful Mafia Bosses”, just 5 behind John Gotti. Avoiding traditional mob domains, Michael masterminded brilliant scams on the edge of the legitimate business world. From auto dealerships and union kickbacks, to financial services and the sports and entertainment industries, to a multi-billion dollar gasoline tax scheme, he earned millions in cash every week at his peak. Not surprisingly, Michael quickly became the target of Manhattan's famed federal prosecutor, Rudy Giuliani. After promising Michael 100 years behind bars after indicting him on racketeering charges, Rudy only came up empty handed. Escaping four more indictments, it seemed Michael Franzese truly was invincible. While producing Knights of the City, a break dance movie filmed in Florida, Michael met a beautiful dancer from Anaheim, California, named Camille Garcia, whose innocent beauty and faith turned his world upside down. After falling in love and eventually marrying Cammy, Michael took the rap on racketeering charges. He pled guilty, accepted a 10-year prison sentence and vowed to do the unthinkable – walk away from the mob. Nobody of his rank had ever just walked away – and lived. Until now. Michael is currently starring in Kevin and Sam Sorbo's terrific new movie, Let There Be Light. -- he plays Pastor Vinny. Listen in as Michael recounts his past as a "made man" and his encounter with the amazing grace that set him free, his part in Let There Be Light and his ministry. ********************** My second guest tonight will be Patrick Van Horne. Patrick Van Horne, a former USMC Captain, is the founder and CEO of The CP Journal, a behavioral analysis training company. His firm provides training support to the U.S. military, federal and local law enforcement agencies and the private security industry. He served in the Marine Corps for seven years as an infantry officer, earning the rank of Captain following his two deployments to Iraq. In addition to serving as a platoon commander, company executive officer and company commander, Patrick served as the officer-in-charge of a training team in the Combat Hunter program. Following his service, he returned to the private sector, founded the company and co-authored Left of Bang. I am convinced that, not just Marines or operatives, but every American should read this book. With the recent church shooting in Texas, with the threat of Islamic terrorism now in country, Americans face danger, and not just down range. Left of Bang is the ultimate guide to situational awareness tactics. What does "Left of Bang" mean? You'll have to listen and find out! His company's training focuses on teaching people how to prevent violent attacks from occurring and finding attackers in plain sight. This is not miss radio that has application for each of us in modern day America! Gentlemen, we all know the world can be a dangerous place. Some would argue it's becoming safer and others would argue it's becoming more dangerous. Either way, the potential for you encountering a threat in your day-to-day life is a real possibility - and one that we, as men, should be prepared for. My guest today, Patrick Van Horne and the author of Left of Bang teaches us how to use non-verbal communication to assess threats, the common physical language all humans use, how to use "combat profiling" to keep yourself and others safe, and how the Marine Corps' Combat Hunter Program could safe your life. PATRICK VAN HORNE Men, I am stoked to introduce you to my guest today. His name is Patrick Van Horne. He is a former infantry Captain with the United States Marine Corps and has been instrumental in helping develop and teach the Marine Corps Combat Hunter Program to his fellow marines, military, law enforcement officers, and civilians. His book, Left of Bang, has been recommended to me over and over again and, a couple months ago, I finally picked up a copy. I think read it in two days - I could not put it down. Since it was one of the best books I've read this year, I decided to reach out and extend an invite to have Patrick on the show. Guys, let me tell you, he does not disappoint, as he talks about how he helped implement, develop, and train this course to his Marines during his two deployments to Iraq and, more recently his work with his behavioral analysis training company, The CP Journal. "At a time when we must adapt to the changing character of conflict, this is a serious book on a serious issue that can give us the edge we need.”—General James Mattis, USMC, Ret."Left of Bang offers a crisp lesson in survival in which Van Horne and Riley affirm a compelling truth: It's better to detect sinister intentions early than respond to violent actions late. Left of Bang helps readers avoid the bang."—Gavin de Becker, bestselling author of The Gift of Fear"Rare is the book that is immediately practical and interesting. Left of Bang accomplishes this from start to finish. There is something here for everyone in the people business and we are all in the people business."—Joe Navarro, bestselling author of What Every BODY is Saying."Left of Bang is a highly important and innovative book that offers a substantial contribution to answering the challenge of Fourth Generation war (4GW)."—William S. Lind, author of Maneuver Warfare Handbook"Like Sun Tzu's The Art of War, Left of Bang isn't just for the military. It's a must read for anyone who has ever had a gut feeling that something's not quite right...be it walking down the street, sitting in a corporate boardroom, or even entering an empty home."-- Steven Pressfield, bestselling author of The Lion's Gate, The Warrior Ethos and Gates of Fire“An amazing book! Applying the lessons learned during the longest war in American history, and building on seminal works like The Gift of Fear and On Combat, this book provides a framework of knowledge that will bring military, law enforcement, and individual citizens to new levels of survival mindset and performance in life-and-death situations. Left of Bang is an instant classic.”--Lt. Colonel Dave Grossman, U.S. Army Ret., author of On Combat and On Killing-- You walk into a restaurant and get an immediate sense that you should leave.-- You are about to step onto an elevator with a stranger and something stops you.-- You interview a potential new employee who has the resume to do the job, but something tells you not to offer a position. These scenarios all represent LEFT OF BANG, the moments before something bad happens. But how many times have you talked yourself out of leaving the restaurant, getting off the elevator, or getting over your silly “gut” feeling about someone? Is there a way to not just listen to your inner protector more, but to actually increase your sensitivity to threats before they happen?Legendary Marine General James Mattis asked the same question and issued a directive to operationalize the Marine Corps' Combat Hunter program. A comprehensive and no-nonsense approach to heightening each and every one of our gifts of fear, LEFT OF BANG is the result.Website-www.cp-journal.comAbout the AuthorPatrick Van Horne is the founder and CEO of The CP Journal, a behavioral analysis training company. Using techniques developed by the Marines makes reading nonverbal cues to identify potential threats very straightforward."Somewhere between 60-90 percent of all communication is nonverbal. The Marine Combat Hunter Program was developed during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to give soldiers tools on how to detect threats before they happen. The goal is to make Marines as situationally aware as possible so they can not just survive, but also win lethal encounters. In Left of Bang, Patrick Van Horne presents the skills and mindsets that are taught in the Marine Combat Hunter program for a civilian audience. We talk about situational awareness and how these skills can be used beyond the battlefield.
