Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/notabenemovies. Hébergé par Acast. Some extra fun this month as we explore the rest of what we haven't seen amongst the 2024 BEST PICTURE OSCAR NOMINATIONS. Well, we're skipping the fun for this particular week because we finally get to the disturbing and unsettling Jonathan Glazer film about the Holocaust that centers specifically on its perpetrators. Perpetrators with wives and children and pets. Husbands who seek to rise within the mundane bureaucracy of an ethnostate that administers horror just on the other side of a wall. You can't see it but you can hear it. Thank god only the characters in the film could smell it but too many seemed rather used to it. Glazer said his new film, “THE ZONE OF INTEREST” starring Christian Friedel & Sandra Hüller, is about the present. Where we find ourselves in the present, drifting along the wake of the holocaust's legacy, leaves us with plenty to ponder and a surprising amount to observe. The past isn't so far gone. It has a way of catching up. Anatomy of a Fall (2023) is an acclaimed French drama directed by Justine Triet, from a screenplay she co-wrote with her real-life partner, Arthur Harari. The movie centers on the criminal trial of a writer (Sandra Hüeller) who is accused of killing her husband (Samuel Maleski) in a small town in the French Alps. The film operates on multiple levels. On one level, it dissects the circumstances surrounding Samuel's death. What caused him to fall from the window of their chalet? Was he pushed? Or did he jump? On another level, the film dissects the deteriorating marriage between Sandra and Samuel and the complex family dynamics surrounding their 11-year-old-son Daniel (Milo Machado-Graner). The film offers a close look at a French criminal investigation and trial. More broadly, it raises questions about the reliability of human memory, the elusive nature of truth, and the complex relationship between law and justice. My guests to discuss Anatomy of a Fall are Fred Davis and Samuel Bettwy.Timestamps:0:00 Introduction3:59 Coming up with a defense strategy9:17 A case about doubt11:36 Pretrial investigations in France15:56 Victims' counsel (partie civile) in France18:50 The role of the investigating magistrate22:03 The presiding judge and the other participants at trial 26:39 Unpacking the seeming “chaos” in the courtroom29:07 Why defendants testify at trial in France34:06 Liberté de la preuve and the treatment of evidence 39:17 The treatment of juveniles under French law43:39 Daniel's pivotal testimony46:13 Appeals of acquittals by the prosecution47:15 Influences on the director 50:37 Expert testimony52:51 The justice system as metaphor Further reading:“Anatomy of a Fall asks the question, ‘Would you like to be judged like that?,'” Actu-Juridique.fr (interview with Vincent Courcelle-Labrousse) (Sept. 11, 2023)“‘Anatomy of a fall': to judge or to administer justice?” Dalloz Actualité (Mar. 4, 2023)Bettwy, Samuel W., Comparative Criminal Procedure Through Film: Analytical Tools & Law and Film Summaries by Legal Tradition and Country (2015)Bordages, Anaïs, “'Anatomy of a Fall,' the anti-trial film,” Slate (May 21, 2023)Dervieux, Valérie-Odile, "'Anatomy of a fall' or fantasy justice," Actu-Juridique.fr (Aug. 24, 2023) Kirry, Antoine, Davis, Frederick T. & Bisch, Alexander, “France,” in The International Investigations Review (Nicolas Bourtin ed.) Spring may be a few weeks away, but like Moira Rose, award season will always be our most favorite time of year! We welcome our good Judy Joshua Clement to talk about the 2024 Academy Awards, which will be on Sunday March 10th at the Dolby theater. We break down this year's nominees in every category - and talk about the very up in the air best actress race. It's one of the closest major categories in years. Will it be Lily Gladstone, Emma Stone, or Sandra Hüller? Let's face it - we love Annette Bening and Carey Mulligan but it's just not their year. We also fully acknowledge the very likely Oppenheimer sweep as well as the overblown Barbie "controversy". If you want to get deep in the weeds with some real Inside Baseball Oscar talk, you've come to the right place. We're almost done discussing all of the Best Picture Oscar nominations and we're talking about the other Sandra Hüller nominated movie in a VERY UNSPOILERY way. A crafty little mystery that is not so much about the mystery itself, but the culmination of pieces that form guilt and animosity in long term relationships. Did she kill her husband or did he do that himself? We're going to the lovely French Alps in Justine Triet's “ANATOMY OF A FALL” starring Sandra Hüller, Samuel Theis, Swann Arlaud, Milo Machado Garner & Antoine Reinhartz. Josh is joined by recurring guests Fred Kolb and Elijah Howard to discuss Best Picture nominee, "The Zone of Interest." They discuss what director Jonathan Glazer wanted—or didn't want to say about evil in his Holocaust film, the film's approach making a haunting Holocaust movie by not putting the worst atrocities directly on screen, its memorable use of sound the performances by Sandra Hüller and Christian Friedel and much more!
German actor Sandra Hüller has the distinct honor of starring in two of this year's Best Picture nominees at the Academy Awards. She is nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance as Sandra in "Anatomy of a Fall," which follows a woman accused of murdering her husband. And she stars as the despicable Hedwig Höss in "The Zone of Interest," which follows the Nazi family and their daily lives just outside Auschwitz. Hüller joins us to discuss both films.
This week on Cinemaholics, Jon Negroni and Will Ashton discuss the films Poor Things and The Zone of Interest. Both movies have been expanding in theaters nationwide, with many people debating and analyzing the themes of sexuality and feminism in Poor Things, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, and Mark Ruffalo. As well as the controversial depiction of Aushwitz during the Holocaust in The Zone of Interest, directed by Jonathan Glazer and starring Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller. And as always, the show finishes out with the Rotten Tomatoes game. Show Notes: (Might be about 30 seconds ahead due to ads!) 00:00 – Introduction and Catching Up 02:15 – Will we review Argylle? Director: Justine Triet Writers: Justine Triet, Arthur Harari Starring: Sandra Hüller, Samuel Theis, Swann Arlaud, Milo Machado Graner Runtime: 2 Hour 31 Minutes Synopsis: The much-lauded winner of this year's Palme d'Or, Justine Triet's fourth feature has cemented her status as one of today's great filmmaking talents. Unfolding over two-and-a-half hours like a compulsively readable novel, the riveting Anatomy of a Fall is both a dissection of an intimate relationship and of the judiciary process. Sandra (a ferocious, magnetic, and edgy Sandra Hüller, also at the Festival in Jonathan Glazer's The Zone of Interest) is a successful German writer who lives in the French Alps with her husband Samuel (Samuel Theis) and their visually impaired son Daniel (Milo Machado Graner). A brilliant, decibel-bursting opening scene suggests tensions in their isolated chalet, so when Samuel is discovered dead in the snow beneath one of their windows, suspicion is quickly aroused. Did he take his own life, or was he pushed to his death? When the investigation proves to be inconclusive — its varying angles hinting at the microscopic examination to come — Sandra is ultimately indicted and put on trial. A captivating and sharply directed, written, and acted courtroom procedural, Anatomy of a Fall also functions like a trenchant autopsy of confirmation bias and ambiguity itself, with the court an operatic arena in which every gesture, word, and past interaction are ripe for judgment. As scrutiny turns to Sandra's complex character and her tumultuous relationship with Samuel — their artistic rivalries, romantic jealousies, and contempt — the couple's young son becomes the key witness. Taut, suspenseful, and thrilling until the final moment, Anatomy of a Fall progresses like a heady puzzle that tackles the messiness of existence and the often-elusive nature of truth itself. Anatomy of a Fall is one of those International films that actually feels even better if you watch it as a foreigner. There's something about watching a court room drama from another country from the perspective of a foreigner with no sense of the criminal justice system in that country. In this film in particular, its jarring to see how the prosecutors and judge hound Sandra (Sandra Hüller) as the accused. What makes a good court room dramas work is its ability to pull the audience into the situation. Anatomy of a Fall takes it a step further and even adds in whodunit elements to have the audience completely guessing as to if Sandra is guilty or not. It's as if the film treats the audience as the traditional jury and each scene is laid out as a way for either the defense or prosecution to present their case in order to sway the jury. Where Anatomy of a Fall succeeds where other films fail is that at no point does it take the audience for granted and what's presented never feels like an empty red heron. Witnesses make mistakes. Scenarios seem implausible but not impossible, leaving room for doubt. Director Justine Triet does a brilliant job of pulling the audience into the situation of this movie and making them FEEL the tension and environment. If you already didn't have strong negative feelings about rapper 50 Cent's song P.I.M.P, then you will probably dread/hate the song after. The obnoxious use of the song by the victim (Sandra's husband) is enough to drive the audience crazy. It's not really a downside though as it's clearly done on purpose. The whole point is to pull the audience into the moment and start thinking things like "Maybe Sandra did it because of how annoying he is" and "She has to be lying when she says the song didn't annoy her because it's annoying me". Anatomy of a Fall is definitely well worth the watch. The drama and tension leads right up through the end of the film and will leave audiences engaged the entire time. In the complex and compelling French film Anatomy of a Fall, a husband is dead and his wife is the chief suspect. The investigation and trial expose the many rifts in their marriage, as the couple's young son yearns to understand what happened and why. Directed by Justine Triet and starring Sandra Hüller, the film won the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
The German actor was told by director Jonathan Glazer he'd be starring in "Big Brother in a Nazi house" — and even that didn't scare him off. Friedel talks to David Canfield about the challenge of turning an Auschwitz commandant into a normal person, bonding with co-star Sandra Hüller over their shared challenge, and how his second career as a musician helps make remarkable performances like this one possible.
