Historia de la caída de David y el encubrimiento de su pecado. Tendemos a ocultar nuestras faltas y pecados.

From 1531-1532, Pizzaro and his group conquered and destroyed the Inca Civilization. Climbing the Andes Mountains, they probably never questioned the ability of the Inca Empire to feed itself in the absence of cattle and wheat. That was, by most estimations, the farthest thing from the mind of the conqueror. Amongst the riches they stole and the mining they conducted, a resource emerged that McNeill believes would have altered history had it not been discovered and transplanted throughout the world. That discovery was the potato.   What if Pizzaro hadn't brought the potato to Europe?    Join us as we continue asking "What if", discuss what might have happened if the conquistador had left the potato behind in the ruins of his conquest, and how such a decision would have changed the world we know today.

This episode is Hernando de Soto Part 1.  I am recording this on April 14, in Key West, Florida. Today we kick off the story of the first real invasion of the American south, Hernando de Soto's reconnaissance-in-force – the Spanish word is entrada -- from 1539-1542. Last week's episode tied up various loose ends that brought us to this point, including that the correct shorthand for Hernando de Soto is, actually, “Soto,” not “de Soto.”  Measured by money and glory, by the late 1530s Hernando de Soto was at the very top of the second rank of Spanish conquistadors.  Hernan Cortes had conquered the Aztecs in Tenochtitlan, uncovered staggering wealth, and pushed his territory north and south from there.  Francisco Pizzaro had conquered the Incas of Cusco, and Soto enabled that conquest as Pizzaro's most courageous and brilliant battlefield commander. Soto returned to Spain in the spring of 1536 after 22 years seeking and finding his fortune in the New World.  He was now 36 years old.  Soto had by that age gathered a significant pile of loot from his adventures in South America, and no small amount of glory.  People who weren't Soto and could not have achieved his astonishing victories in Central and South America would have called it quits and retired as one of the richest men in Europe's richest country.  Soto was not that kind of man.  He knew there was another Cusco or Tenochtitlan to be found and conquered, this time with Soto in command. We talk about food culture in Spain and the UK and how we can try and improve our connection to food, particularly when you think of things like childhood obesity.  I also find out that Jose’s middle name is Manuel and with a restaurant already called José, Pizzaro and José Pizaro I for one think it’s time he used his middle name for the next one.  Oh yes, and then there is Olive Oil.  We definitely learn a few things about that. Wandering Knight

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 24, 2013 10:25

Along with my parent I joined 10 other people for a two week long trip to Peru and Ecuador. This would be our first Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) trip. It would prove to be quite an interesting and informative experience overall. It is best to think of this as really two trips rolled into one. The first week we spent in Peru traveling mostly through the Sacred Valley with a key highlight being our overnight visit to Machu Picchu. The second week was spent in Ecuador and the key component there was our 4 days spent  sailing amongst the Galapagos Islands. OAT trips, at least this one, have a goal of "learning and discovery" and one result of that is you move much more slowly than we are used to doing either by ourselves or with groups such as we travel with when on HF Holiday hiking trips. While an OAT trip can have physical challenges such as dealing with high altitude conditions, Machu Picchu sits at about 8,000 feet and Cusco at just over 11,000 feet above sea level or sea sickness on the 16-passenger catamaran the actual physical endeavors are modest. But you will still experience quite a lot even though at times you may feel both rushed or stuck in place depending on circumstances. First we would spent a day in Lima, Peru. Lima is a bustling city and rather large with correspondingly maddeningly slow yet hectic traffic. It seems to take well over a half hour to get from anywhere to anywhere. Our hotel was located in the Miraflores district which is a posh area of the city quite different in feel from the heart of the downtown where central government buildings and the like are. We spent a very interesting bit of time at the archeological museum which held artifacts of ceramic and tapestries some of which are pushing 3,000 years old. It is a compelling reminder that civilizations thrived in this area for a considerable length of time and that the Inca Empire was only a tiny, admittedly very impressive, capstone to the history of the area before the conquest by the Spanish lead by Pizzaro in 1532. Visiting the convent (monastery maybe; I'm not sure - Pavel and the local guide Elisa - I think that's her name - said "convent" but I'm not sure that's what they meant) where lengthy lines of people waited to enter for a months saints day service (Saint Anthony I think) was striking. These were routine services but clearly important. I think we were struck more by this than the throngs in a central square that were watching the Michael Jackson impersonations concert going on just a couple blocks away.  Our hotel is located in the Miraflores district of Lima. Just a couple of block away built into the cliffs that drop down to the Pacific ocean is a pedestrian shopping mall. It's a pretty posh seeming place though when we walked through it just after 9:00 AM on Saturday it was pretty much empty. When we walked some of the streets later in the day things were definitely busier in this area. We visited the archeological museum in Lima. To get anywhere from our hotel it seemed to take easily 30 minutes by minibus. I am not sure if that says more about traffic congestion, though traffic did seem heavy, or how spread out Lima is. The museum is home to numerous artifacts including tapestries and ceramics (like this). Some of the artifacts are 3,000 years old. Seeing the works of cultures that predate the Inca who really are just the last one and only present for a very short time is impressive. We visited the heart of Lima and in this  square found a Michael Jackson impersonation concert going on. Perhaps some protests too. But the real big deal here was at a monastery (I think) that was running constant services for a saint. I think it may have been Saint Anthony and this type of thing happens every month. The lines of people for what must be a regular and routine yet important service is remarkable.

Red Ice Radio Write-Up: We continue our talk with Alan Watt about the colonization of the Americas. We talk about the Knights Templars and their connection to a pre history high civilization and that different cultures visited America long before Christopher Columbus officially discoverer the continent. We talk about the conquistadors Pizzaro and Cortez and their encounters with the Maya, Aztec and Inca Civilizations. We address the consequent collapse of the South American empires, the gold that was stolen and the anticipation of a white man (Quetzalcoatl) returning. We talk about the possibility that history is "scripture", a "game plan" that is being played out. So in regards to South America, is it possible that someone planted the myths that later became their religions? What is the connection between the Vatican and the Templars? Did the conquistadors really burn all the Mayan scriptures or did they keep it? So did the Templars or a pre-Templar organization really construct the Pyramids in South America? What about the Pyramids in Egypt? Tune into this fascinating interview.
