Tshidi Madia, standing in for 702's Clement Manyathela, speaks to Prince Mashele, a political analyst, Professor Kagiso Pooe from the Wits School of Governance, and Lizeka Tandwa, the Digital Politics Editor for TimesLIVE and Sunday Times, about the Government of National Unity's latest announcement. Briefing the media on the outcome of the ANC’s National Working Committee (NWC) on Tuesday, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said that the party will "hit the reset button” and start engaging with parties inside and outside the GNU. This is mainly to tackle the impasse over the 2025 budget that has emerged. Negotiations will take place over the next five days. This ‘reset’ does not entail booting the DA from the GNU, or pushing for any specific changes. Subsequently, Mashele, Pooe and Tandwa discuss and ask: What the way forward is for the GNU. Will the 2025 budget be passed? Will there be a reconfiguration? Where do we stand on the VAT increase? "It's been a rather tumultuous time, a time of uncertainty... what we know right now is that the ANC's currently in conversation with its political partners in the GNU and those who supported it from the outside the GNU primarily, Action SA. What's interesting for us is to see what's going to come out of those conversations." - Lizeka Tandwa, Digital Politics Editor - TimesLIVE and Sunday Times "We must keep this in mind and we must never forget that the biggest two components - that is the ANC and DA - are strategic enemies and they are in this government to weaken each other. That is what we must keep in mind all the time when we see all the dramas... that's number one." - Prince Mashele, Political Analyst "What holds this thing together? It was always the key issue which was the weakness of this, and I call it the strategic weakness." - Kagiso Pooe, Professor - Wits School of Governance Thanks for listening! ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba's book, written by political commentator Prince Mashele, has sparked controversy following the revelation that Mashaba contributed to its funding, despite being advertised as an unauthorised biography, Jonathan Ball Publishers withdrew the book from the market, citing a breach of trust, as Mashele failed to disclose the source of the funding. The source of the funding was disclosed by Brutus Malada, a senior researcher on the book who is married to former Democratic Alliance mayor Mpho Phalatse. Charles Cilliers, author and Co-Founder of the Patriotic Alliance, expressed astonishment at the reported payment of R12.5 million to Mashele, deeming it an “unfathomable amount”. Cilliers further commented that this controversy could have negative repercussions for Mashaba and ActionSA, adding that if his “big and scary” leader, Gayton McKenzie, had done the same, he would have strangled him. - Linda van Tilburg Learn more about your ad choices. The author of Herman Mashaba's book, Prince Mashele, says he was never paid but received a loan from Mashaba. Mashele, a political analyst and author, has been giving media interviews, including on eNCA and Radio 702. He made headlines after the Sunday Times reported Mashaba funded the book The Outsider: The unauthorised biography of Herman Mashaba. Jonathan Ball Publishers removed the book from the shelves.
In this edition of In The Ring, I analyse Prince Mashele's responses in interviews granted to eNCA, 702 and the SABC, in light of media reports that he had, ok the face of it, been dishonest about the nature of his biography of Herman Mashaba. Herman Mashaba is leader of politica part ActionSA, and prior to that was always known as a very successful businessman in an against-all-odds tale at the height of apartheid; in recent years he a new career pivot that had also seen him becoming mayor of Johannesburg.Mashele, a well-known South African political analyst, had claimed that he had "self-funded" his book on Mashaba, and the subtitle of the book declared it to be "unauthorised".It has emerged that Mashaba had provided funding for the book, and had engaged the author on drafts of the chapter. This raises sharp ethical questions: was the work unauthorised or authtoised ? Did Mashele lie on eNCA? Did Mashele WRONGLY withheld the information from Jonathan Ball ? What, most importantly, are the consequences for the professional integrity of the author? And what are we to make of the other actors in this drama: the subject; the publisher; the researcher/former best friend Brutus Malada who 'blew the whistle'?Have a listen to my uhm unauthorised take.

The publisher of ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba's autobiography, Jonathan Ball Publishers is withdrawing Mashaba's unauthorized biography, 'The Outsider', which was authored by political analyst Prince Mashele. Mashaba reportedly gave Mashele R12,5 million to write the book. The publishers say they had no option but to withdraw the book from the market following the disclosure that Herman Mashaba had funded his own book. Meanwhile, ActionSA has rejected media reports that Mashaba bribed Mashele to write his biography. To look into the issues of ethics in the process of the book, Elvis Presslin spoke to Media Expert, Tshamano Makhadi

When President Jacob Zuma promised jobs in his State of the Nation Address in Parliament last week, he sparked a great deal of heated debate among South Africans, about how that is to be achieved. Political analyst Prince Mashele commented that the president actually expected the jobs to come from white South Africans because it is white South Africans who create jobs, and not black people. Mashele says since 1994, black people have not established any massive factories to create jobs for their own. Sakina Kamwendo speaks to Prince Mashele for more.
