US Conservative Joel Pollak, the erstwhile frontrunner to become Trump's man in Pretoria, shares insights on US ‘reciprocal' Tariffs announced yesterday - among them a 30% duty on South African exports into the world's biggest market. Pollak explains the White House added both direct duties and indirect charges on US exports to determine the scale of its new tariffs. In SA's case, the US calculated the effective tariff is 60%, half of which comes from BEE requirements whose legally applied add-on premiums funnel R150bn a year to politically connected elites. The White House dropped a surprise last night in naming US conservative heavyweight Leo Brent Bozell, rather than frontrunner Joel Pollak, as its choice to become the ambassador to South Africa. Bozell is an anti-mainstream media activist, best known for founding (in 1987) and running the Media Research Centre, whose stated mission is to “expose and neutralise… the (US) national news media.” Bozell is also a vocal strong supporter of Israel. In his latest interview with BizNews, US intelligence analyst retired Colonel Chris Wyatt comments on US President Donald Trump's pick of his former “big opponent” Brent Bozell III as Ambassador to South Africa. “…around in 2016, he called him (Trump) the greatest charlatan of them all, a huckster and shameless self-promoter.” However, “he's probably the right guy to be honest for this position… someone who's not quite as antagonistic regarding issues related to South Africa.” As for why Joel Pollak missed out on the posting, Wyatt says: “…maybe he knocked himself out with his reporting on South Africa.” Wyatt also gives his take on some of the possible candidates for SA Ambassador to the US, including Tony Leon, Lindiwe Sisulu, Bantu Holomisa, and Velenkosini Tlabisa.
