I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. Happy New Year. Our first edition for January features another diverse collection, including Kraut rock by the four-piece band Electric Orange and the re-release of Bloop's 1999 album ‘Schallaufnahmen,' performed by two members of that band, Dirk Jan Muller and Dirk Bittner. UK musician David Hughes, performing as ION, delivers a soundtrack to a no-budget student horror film titled ‘Perdition's Flames,' blending guitars and atmospheric synths. Our edited track from 1979 by Earthstar is taken from the album ‘French Skylines,' produced by Klaus Schulze. As usual, we always like to give the female side exposure, with Brooklyn-based composer and producer Rachika Nayar, who has transitioned from the ghostly netherworlds of her debut to a vivid fluorescent cinematic maximalism, and Nadia Struiwigh, who echoes a free-spirited approach of electronic music in the mid-eighties, giving emotionally-charged ambience. Considering the number of people who are constantly chasing after contentment, you'd think someone would have found a tried and true formula by now, right? Unfortunately, it seems we need to keep looking, if such a formula even exists (which after making this episode of Sunday Sanctuary seems increasingly unlikely). Trusting in a comment he once heard that it's more interesting to hear from someone still working it out as opposed to someone on the other side, producer Sam steps forward to share some of his wrestle with contentment. Sam introduces Petra to his friend Cole and the two have a conversation about finding contentment in the midst of their very different lives. Later on, Petra talks with Rev. Spanky Moore about what he has learnt and noticed about contentment. Spanky charts his journey from playing in a punk band and through his radio career before landing up as an Anglican priest and tells Petra about one life-changing conversation he had at age 25. Haere mai! Sacred texts: 'The Dude abides' scene from The Big Lebowski 'Alleyway conversation' scene from Before Sunrise (an incredible film!) Music: Take Five by Dave Brubeck (played during Sam's boat story) East Cape by Headland (played during Sam's boat story) Le Petits Gris by Khruangbin (played during Sam and Cole's conversation) Sun Rays Like Stilits by Tommy Geurrero (played at the end of Cole's conversation) Actually by Rozi Plain (Can't Get No) Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones (played during communion) Getting to Me by Caroline Rose Anchin Kfu Ayinkash by Hailu Mergia and the Dhalak Band (played at the end of Spanky's conversation) memory as miniatures by Rachika Nayar (played during the benediction)
We're surrounded by a lot of noise. Whether it's literal noise such as traffic and people's chatter or metaphorical noise in the form of a neverending supply of media, art and social content, it can be hard to cut through it all. On this episode of Sunday Sanctuary, join Petra as she explores the impact our noisy world can have on our body and our wairua/spirit. Grace McArthur returns to lead us in another exploration of Brené Brown's book Atlas of the Heart. Jay Ruka (Dean of St Mary's Cathedral in New Plymouth and author of Huia Come Home) also joins Petra to dive into how he has noticed the noisiness of his life change over time. We know that a podcast episode exploring the downsides of noise is ironic, but our hope is that you'll be inspired to look into how you can start to deal with the noise that is everpresent in our world. Sacred Text: The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry (Text/Video) Featured Music: Under the Water by Hand Habits and Amelia Meath A Quiet Place by Garnett Mimms & The Enchanters Memory as Miniatures by Rachika Nayar (played at the end of Atlast of the Heart) Beginning by The Durutti Column (played at the end of Jay Ruka's interview) Premiere Gymnopedie by Eric Satie (played under the benediction) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's our yearly tradition here at Queen Venerator as we're counting down our Top 100 Albums of 2022. To say that this was a good year in music would be a massive understatement. This was one of the best years in music in recent memory. A lot of great albums didn't make the cut, which is kind of insane considering there are 100 albums listed here. And what a 100 they are. Dance bangers from across Africa, ambient bedroom projects, a ton of hip-hop, wild free jazz, midi-infused pipe organs, fiery hardcore punk, modular synths for days, ear-shattering electronics, the smoothest desert blues, a guy rummaging around in a box for an hour, and so much more. Our team member Andy is on the road to recovery after suffering a stroke and spending 91 days in the hospital, hopefully, we will be getting our website updated with the bio's for no 207 to our latest 2014. A few more new names appeared for the first time. Brooklyn-based composer and producer Rachika Nayar finds the protean guitarist and producer expanding on the ghostly netherworlds of her debut with vivid fluorescent cinematic maximalism. Two new releases of dark experimental ambient drone music on the Russian label Zhelezobeton. Using analogue synths & field recordings, Field Lines Cartographer often creates dark, occasionally bucolic soundscapes. Joseph L Young's fifty-five-minute excursion into a sonic landscape shifts under the listener's feet with twists and turns. Cass Anawaty & Brian Fechino presents a collection of four pieces that range from pensive and reflective ambient meditations using mainly guitars, & Psycho & Plastic's latest single lingers in the memory once it's passed, the merging of delicateness found within the piano and the mournful tones elevate the single in a delightfully unexpected way. After a friend recently mentioned some news about the ‘Future World Orchestra' we came across in our collection the 2000 CD ‘Hidden Files' on the Groove label, a melodic uptempo album touching on instrumental prog rock, making it the opening tracks under our ‘Blast from the Past'. 02.27 Future World Orchestra ‘Running Water' (album The Hidden Files) www.groove.nl 06.51 Future World Orchestra ‘Devining-Rod' 10.25 Amber Route feat: Walter Holland ‘Asteroid Joiroid '82 (album Live at Rockwell International 1982)*** https://walterholland.bandcamp.com 19.19 Rachika Nayar ‘Heaven Come Crashing: feat Marie bc' (album Heaven Come Crashing) https://rachika.bandcamp.com 24.26 Jack Hertz ‘Dreamquencer' (album Baroque Astronaut) https://auralfilms.bandcamp.com 31.55 Jack Hertz ‘Ecstasy of Saint Teresa' 39.00 Steve Roach ‘Currents of Compassion' (album What Remains) *** https://projektrecords.bandcamp.com 49.00 Thy Veils ‘Lina Luna' (album Next Forever) https://thyveils.bandcamp.com 52.57 Howard Givens & Madhavi Devi ‘The Celestial Expanse' (album The Celestial Expanse) www.spottedpeccary.com 01.03.44 Jim Ottaway ‘One True Vision' (album Somewhere In Between) https://jimottaway.bandcamp.com 01.09.26 Jim Ottaway 'Sacred Ground' 01.15.14 Thaneco & Dask ‘The Explorer In The Garden' (album Stages) www.syngate.nl 01.23.42 Thaneco & Dask ‘The Apprentice in the Wellspring' 01.31.34 Field Line Cartographer ‘Purple Dusk Over Water' (album Dreamtides) https://fieldlinescartographer-cis.bandcamp.com 01.40.30 Petrograd Drone Gathering / Moscow Noise Manufactory ‘Live' (album PoluDrëma 26.11.2021) *** https://zhelezobeton.bandcamp.com 01.49.52 Bu.d.d.A. ‘The Mourning of the Midnight Diner Fading' (album Diese Anmut von Trophäen) https://zhelezobeton.bandcamp.com 02.00.07 Alio Die & Dirk Serries ‘The Sun From The Point of View Of The Earth' (album The Chapter Of The Eclipse)*** www.project.com 02.08.50 Zero Ohms ‘Vistas Beyond' (album Cloudwalker & Ascent) www.spottedpeccary.com 02.16.13 Shall Remain Nameless ‘Trip: Singing Of Angels' (album Retitled) ***https://shallremainnameless.bandcamp.com 02.24.48 Joseph L Young ‘The Forgotten'(album Into The Unknown) https://josephlyoung.com 02.29.08 Joseph L Young ‘Into The Unknown' 02.34.06 Robert Fox ‘Resurrection' (album Timeless Vol 2) Edit *** www.admusiconline.com 02.36.14 Robert Fox ‘Icarus' 02.43.28 Robert Fox ‘Woodland Carpet In Blue' 02.47.21 Cass Anawaty & Brian Fechino ‘Cloud Races' (EP Let Go) www.heartdancerecords.com 02.51.43 Psycho & Plastic ‘Back & Forth' (album Phantom Bliss) https://psychoandplastic.bandcamp.com 02.45.05 Doug Lynner ‘The Mysterious Transition' (album The Mysterious Transition) *** https://douglynner.bandcamp.com Edit ***

Hallucinations on a burning plain, with Fatima Al Qadiri, Jon Hopkins, Loscil, Elori Saxi, Eluvium and Rachika Nayar.
Rachika Nayar is a composer and producer who uses her electric guitar as a sound source, creating rich layers of sound in real time. She then "mutilates" and "contorts" these sounds, processing them, arranging them into the finished pieces on her 2021 LP Our Hands Against The Dusk and its companion record, the 2021 EP Fragments, which could be considered as a collection of Etudes; none of the works on Fragments were translated into larger pieces. Nayar's guitar playing is informed by math rock, post rock, jazz, EDM - "the 4AM warehouse rave", and lately – exploring open tunings. She talks us through and demonstrates her process, starting with solo electric guitar loops, which are processed, pulled apart, and rebuilt, shifted, stretched, and arranged with other electronic instruments. Rachika Nayar improvises guitar loop-based pieces and transforms them for this remote session. - Caryn Havlik
