Interview with Sevana

We had the pleasure of interviewing Sevana over Zoom video! Born Anna-Sharé Blake in Jamaica’s parish of Westmoreland, Sevana coined her name after Savannah-La-Mar, the picturesque coastal town where she grew up. Her musical awakening began at eight years old over a hearty Sunday morning breakfast, when she broke out in an impromptu rendition of Celine Dion’s “A New Day” for her family. She has come a long way since this epiphany at such an early age to now fulfilling her passions to the fullest. The 28-year-old singer, who is also an actress and model, is a quintessential triple threat of talent. Her burgeoning abilities are now backed by reggae star Protoje’s management and label company In.Digg.Nation Collective. Sevana recently signed with Six Course/RCA Records as part of In.Digg.Nation’s partnership to release her major label debut. Hailing from Jamaica gives any artist a certain legitimacy, but it also brings certain expectations — ones which Sevana lives up to and exceeds. While reflecting the island’s musical sensibilities in some ways, her vocals are strongly influenced by modern R&B, evoking such soul queens as Beyoncé, Jazmine Sullivan and Adele.Although Sevana got her musical break in 2008 with the girl group SLR, placing third place on Digicel Rising Stars (Jamaica’s equivalent of American Idol), it was not until years later that her career came into focus. In 2014, she impacted the chorus of  “Sudden Flight” from Protoje’s album Ancient Future. She made regular live appearances alongside Protoje and his band Indiggnation. Instantly comfortable, confident and engaging in live performances, she flourished on stage. In July 2015, she joined the Ancient Future Tour across Europe where she got her first taste of life on the road. Her 2016 self-titled EP was a six-song project that shared honest stories from her childhood, feelings of love and thoughts of letting go. Sevana’s first European solo tour followed. Two years later the singer delivered her infectious anthem “Sometime Love.” The single received heavy rotation in Jamaica and the U.K. (featured as BBC 1Xtra’s Mista Jam’s “Jam Hot” Record of the Week). Sevana has also recorded live sessions for BBC in Jamaica with David Rodigan. In Summer 2019, she dropped her upbeat dancehall-flavored jam “Nobody Man” (released via Easy Star Records/In.Digg.Nation Collective), which showcased her “stunning vocal range” (COMPLEX). Later in the fall, she joined a cast of Jamaica’s leading singers – including Jaz Elise, Lila Iké, and Naomi Cowan – on the all-female riddim compilation Rock & Groove. Sevana’s contribution “Haul and Pull” was selected as the Coldest Record for BBC Radio 1 with Toddla T.Over the past year, Sevana landed festival performances at Boomtown (UK), Reggae Geel (Germany) and Rototom Sunsplash (Spain), Sole DXB (Dubai) and joined Protoje on some of his major shows, including BRIC’s Celebrate Brooklyn! NYC concert and Jamaica’s largest annual music festival Reggae Sumfest. Sevana has earned notoriety by The FADER, NYLON, COMPLEX, VICE/Noisey, BBC (1Xtra), LargeUp and graced the cover of RIDDIM Magazine's SPRING 2019 issue. In addition to her singing career, she played the starring role in the groundbreaking Jamaican web series, Losing Patience, which aired on the country’s most popular TV network TVJ. Her photogenic, naturally radiant look has made her a favorite of photographers and fashion labels. Most recently, she was included in PUMA Middle East’s 2020 campaign along with labelmate Lila Iké.Be Somebody, Sevana’s 2020 EP is the next chapter in her song book. This latest release consists of all-new tracks that peel off Sevana’s layers in a metamorphosis of self, reflecting on personal growth, love and relationships. The EP’s title track “Be Somebody” sets an aspirational tone of Sevana becoming an individual and reaching one’s full potential despite overwhelming feelings of doubt amidst the pressures of the world. “Let me be greater than this,” Sevana wails with intensity. One of the album’s crown jewels is “Set Me On Fire,” produced by Protoje, J.L.L. and Paris Lamont Dennis II. It is a tale of revenge in a relationship where she turns her tragedy into triumph. On the more flirtatious track “Mango” produced by J.L.L., Sevana has space to flow in her sultry Jamaican accent over a minimal backdrop of airy synths and tickling guitar notes. Sevana’s benediction of how far her love and loyalty would travel on the EP’s first single “If You Only Knew” is even more contagious sung in her falsetto. Kelsey Gonzalez, producer and guitarist for Anderson .Paak’s Free Nationals band is at the helm of this track.Sevana’s Be Somebody EP captures her quest to self discovery, complimented with minimally eloquent stripped-down production that gives room for her soaring vocals and emotive lyrics to take center stage.“For the EP, I wanted to add songs that covered various thoughts and my beliefs. I took the bars off my mind. I did not want to compromise sonically, so I  just wrote, in an honest way, honoring the melodies as they came out of me. I wanted to take the listener on a meaningful journey and I think I did that,” Sevana says about her latest body of work.We want to hear from you! Reggae Lover Podcast episode 87 features the voice of Jah Cure. Born in October 1978 in Hanover, Jamaica, Jah Cure grew up in Kingston. He got the name Jah Cure from Capleton who he met while living in Kingston. Under the tutelage of Beres Hammond the hit song, King In This Jungle, a 1997 duet with Sizzla emerged. Many of the songs Jah Cure released around that time became popular and won critical acclaim. Beres took him on tour to Europe and through the Caribbean with his Harmony House Records family. Cure emerged to be one of the brightest stars of 1997, which was an amazing year for reggae music and dancehall. The music of that period inspired me to start buying records and aspiring to be a selector. This mix focuses on songs from that time. In November 1998 while driving in Montego Bay, Jah Cure got pulled over by the police and arrested. Charged with gun possession, robbery, and rape, he was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in prison. He served in a correctional facility that had a digital recording studio that inmates could use. During his incarceration term, he recorded three albums and some singles, many of which topped charts in Jamaica. Upon his release from jail on parole in July 2007 after serving 8 years of the sentence, Jah Cure came out with a fourth album, "Reflections... a new beginning." Cure headlined and closed Reggae Sumfest that year in August. He signed to VP Records he launched Iyah Cure Productions. Over the next several years he collaborated with top artists from the reggae, hip-hop, and R&B worlds. Jah Cure released the "Universal Cure" album in 2009 then came out with "The Cure," which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album in 2016. The end of this mix features of lovers rock of which Jah Cure has released a great deal of recently. My main focus was the original, undiluted, grassroots material. The songs from before his incarceration are more soulful, inspirational, and rebellious. I wish Jah Cure much continued success in the future. He has a beautiful family and lots going in the music business. That's it for reggae lover podcast episode 87. Look out for a bonus live audio episode coming your way from BobFest ATL. Many women have made a name for themselves in the male-dominated genre of Reggae music. Here we speak of some current notables and analyze some of the issues that have always existed. There is always a balance of positive and negative and we touch on that in this Reggae Lover episode.Of the several female artists that continue to hold their own, here are some highlights:Etana has produced above average music for at least the past 10 years. She earned a nomination for Best Reggae Album at the upcoming 61st Annual Grammy Awards for her latest project, Reggae Forever. She is the first female nominee in that category since Sister Carol in 1997, and the fourth ever.Spice became the first reggae artist to cross the 1 million followers mark on Instagram. Known for raunchy lyrics, she ventured into social commentary on her single "Black Hypocrisy." The song, which tackles the issue of colorism is on her Billboard chart-topping mixtape entitled "Captured." I hope that Spice tackles more serious issues in the future. She can be a positive influence for young women the way she is controlling the media right now.Queen Ifrica has wowed audiences at festivals like Rebel Salute and Reggae Sumfest for the past several years. Her songs have broached the toughest topics from incest to skin bleaching. She sings out against crime, unhealthy diets, corruption, and other evils. Queen Ifrica is also well-rounded and able to discuss love and sexuality in tasteful ways.Leaders of the new school:Reggae revivalist Jah9 is as refreshing as she is an enigmatic force. She's a yoga practitioner and poet turned reggae performing artist. Her dancehall career was nurtured by RoryStoneLove who produced her debut album. Jah9's lyrics are deep, thought-provoking, and meaningful. Her music is powerful yet diverse. The 17-year-old singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Koffee, emerged as a star in 2018. Her single's, "Burning," and "Raggamuffin," gained local and international attention. Look out for her new hit, "Toast," which looks to be an even bigger smash.Lila Ike is one of the protege's of Grammy-nominated reggae revival leader Protoje. She was a unique style and flair with songs about love and socioeconomic topics.Twenty-one-year-old Yanah is known as "The Tiny Powerhouse." With a hand-full of songs released to date, she has captivated listeners. Her delivery is sultry and passionate.Sevana is another songstress working with Protoje's In.Digg.Nation Collective record label. She stood out on "A Bit Too Shy" and "Sudden Flight" which featured Jesse Royal. Sevana has an amazing sound - one of the sweetest voices to come out of Jamaica in a long time.Naomi Cowan came out with a fun 2018 single called "Paradise Plum." She has an R&B/soul, reggae vibe and is actually the daughter of musician Tommy Cullen and singer Carlene Davis. She spent time in Canada where she went to college and then earned a Masters in digital media. After some time running her parent's businesses, she has turned her focus to a music career. Look out for big things from Naomi!Kristine Alicia's 2nd album "Songs from Zion" debuted in 2017. Produced by RoryStoneLove and featuring Dean Fraser, the 11-track album is classic roots reggae with inspirational messages. Kristine's vocal prowess bolsters the project. Rory's Black Dub label has been grooming many promising female artists. The ever-versatile Keida and potent lyricist Karamanti both represent a strong female presence. Their content centers around themes of unity and consciousness. Karamanti launched her own record label, BlackWuman22 Music.Dancehall artist Dovey Magnum has risen to international fame in the past year. She's by far one of the most powerful female performers in her class and her talent is undeniable. Her spiritual side is expressed in "Prayers Me Use and Win," but her more popular anthems are X-rated. Dovey can definitely affect positive change by injecting conscious messages into her music.Kelissa is the daughter of the lead singers from the foundation group Chakula. She attended University in California where she toured extensively. Kelissa also performed and spent time in Africa gaining notoriety there. She has toured and collaborated with Chronixx in the studio as well.Other artists mentioned:Marcia Griffiths, Nadine Sutherland, Tanya Stephens, Lady Saw (Marion Hall), Lady Ann, Lady G, Sister Nancy, Sister Charmaine, and Shensea. The challenges:There are many other female artists out right whose music is only about sex and sexuality. Their music gets to the forefront in the major media channels more often than not. Selectors and radio disc jockeys have been doing more following than innovating. Their playlists feature the same raunchy songs, with few attempts to introduce more diverse subject matter. It seems quite difficult to get played as a new performer. This only entices young upcoming women to embrace the same age-old cliche - sex sells.Spice, who many refer to as the new Queen of Dancehall signed her record deal in 2009. Since then, her label has failed to release a full-length studio album of her songs. We dissect this issue trying to figure out how this could even happen. With this climate how can new female artists get discovered while avoiding exploitation? How can we achieve more balance on the lineups of shows and concerts? How can radio, dancehall, and mixtape playlists become more diverse? How can reggae music, a genre that once stood as a voice for the voiceless embrace its own women? How can we become less hypocritical as an industry and as a society? In this, the age of the #metoo movement, and "Surviving R. Kelly," it is imperative that we protect and support our women. This discussion may pose more questions than answers, but it spawns a dialogue that needs to be had.Add the names of female artists that should have been highlighted in this piece (tag them in the comments). Do you agree or disagree with the statements we have made? Do you have an answer to the questions posed? Let us know. Thanks for listening, reading, and sharing. This is dedicated to you. #reggaelover  Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/reggae-lover/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast? Go to https://redcircle.com/brands and sign up.
