Bob Marley is known as the most famous Jamaican but he's also considered the paragon of reggae music. Bob Marley One Love is the new movie that gives us a closer look into what drove him and the turbulence he experienced. Marley grew up in poverty, the son of a black mother and a white father, but his undeniable musical ability helped him rise above that. This movie features those sweet musical offerings peppered throughout. Kingsley Ben-Adir plays the legendary Marley and Lashana Lynch plays his wife Rita who braves the danger of Jamaica with him. Marley's musical career origins are also explored, along with providing some cinematic representation to what his songwriting process was like. Does Bob Marley One Love give us a look into Marley's life in an entertaining way? Check out this episode to find out. Bob Marley One Love also stars James Norton, Tosin Cole, Umi Myers, Anthony Welsh, Nia Ashi, Aston Barrett Jr., Anna-Share Blake, Gawaine “J-Summa” Campbell, Naomi Cowan, Alexx A-Game, Michael Gandolfini.Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

We talk about her commitment to being authentic in her music even by sharing her heartbreaks and being "ghosted" in her most recent singles. We had the pleasure of interviewing Naomi Cowan over Zoom video! Naomi Cowan, is no stranger to the world of music and entertainment as she is a child of reggae royalty. The youngest of seven siblings, she was born & raised in Kingston, Jamaica under the mentorship of her parents Tommy Cowan, OD (reggae music producer, songwriter & former road manager for Bob Marley) & Carlene Davis OD (international reggae vocalist). Touted as one of the Caribbean's top rising female artists, Cowan was recognized as the Breakthrough Reggae Artist of 2018 at the 2019 Jamaica Reggae Industry Awards. Her first release Naked was the first song Naomi wrote on guitar and now her signature hit Paradise Plum rocketed Naomi to reggae music fans across the world and propelled her to several international stages in music and media. Naomi has performed live in London, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, Trinidad, Miami, Toronto, New York, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands & across the island of Jamaica. Her live sets include performances of her original reggae/rocksteady releases such as The Way, Gold, You're Gonna Lose feat Mark Pelli (member of the billboard chart topping Reggae-Pop group Magic!), One True Love and Peace Of Mind. She now enters a new phase in her music career with the first single off her joint venture project with Major Lazer "StarGirl" (May 2021, 7thC Records). The first track includes the Rihanna esque upbeat feel good track "Energy" which was produced by Izybeats (Koffee's "Toast). "Energy" has already caught the ears of New York Times top music critic Jon Pareles calling it "an ingenious, multi-leveled mesh of syncopations and silences", along with NY Daily News, LA Weekly, Essence, The Root, Brooklyn Vegan and more all praising the track. The former Miss Teen Jamaica's passion for youth empowerment can be seen through her work with youth in both Toronto & Jamaica. She is a speaker and mentor for the We Inspire Girls to be Strong Women tour, Manifesto Jamaica and the We Transform Jamaica program. We want to hear from you! Jamaican rising stars Lila Iké, Sevana, Jaz Elise and Naomi Cowan discuss whether or not they think about genre when creating, how much they write about their personal lives in their music, and how their experiences as a woman in the music industry are reflected in their songs. Lila Iké is a Jamaican singer-songwriter whose genreless sound fuses contemporary reggae with elements of soul, dancehall and hip-hop. She signed to Protoje's In.Digg.Nation label in 2017 and released her debut EP, The ExPerience. last year. Singer-songwriter, actress and label-mate Sevana's music is rooted in soul and R&B, or, as she describes it, "every sound but with a Jamaican filter". She recently released her second EP, Be Somebody, and is also the star of Jamaican web series Losing Patience. Naomi Cowan was 2018's Breakthrough Act at the Jamaica Reggae Industry Awards, and since then she has toured with Estelle and released several singles, including chart-topping hit Paradise Plum. Jaz Elise has been singing since she was 5 years old and released her debut EP earlier this year, an In.Digg.Nation production titled The Golden Hour. The artists discuss whether or not they think about genre when creating, how much they write about their personal lives in their music, and how their experiences as a woman in the music industry are reflected in their songs.

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Runkus over Zoom video! Jamaica’s RUNKUS takes listeners into his world on the new album IN:SIDE, an immersive meditation on life, love and technology in the age of quarantines and lockdowns. The 10-track LP, which features appearances from Tarrus Riley, Naomi Cowan, Royal Blu, Jesse Royal, Kabaka Pyramid and Munga Honorable, hits streaming platforms today via L.A. record label Delicious Vinyl Island and the artist’s own Runkus Music imprint.Blending the cultural gravitas of roots reggae and dancehall with the energy of trap and the intricate wordplay of classic hip-hop, Runkus is known for making music with a global, yet unmistakably Jamaican, perspective. When a 24-hour lockdown was imposed on his hometown of Portmore in April—with no one allowed to leave or enter— he hunkered down to create the most provocative and challenging work of his career, recording a new song each day. “It was one of those apocalyptic moments in life,” the artist says of the frantic paranoia that enveloped his community during the shutdown. “Youknow when you watch a movie and you see everybody just fret? It was really like that. My thing was fightor flight: Would I panic too, stress and get depressed? Or make music?”IN:SIDE captures this moment, reflecting the anxieties of life in the age of isolation, along with the hopeful promise of a better future. “TAN A YUH YAAD” (Which takes its title from the Jamaican slang phrase used by Prime Minister Andrew Holness during the Portmore lockdown) and “THE MASK:2ND WAVE” explores the realities of this new world, creating a timely soundtrack for these unprecedented times. With “5Gs,” selected as one of the best reggae/dancehall singles of 2020 by LargeUp.com and Pandora, Ruckus aligns with top Jamaican lyricists Jesse Royal, Kabaka Pyramid, Royal Blu and Munga Honorableto deliver a blistering commentary on technology and the spread of information. “EVERYBODY GOINGLIVE” (featuring Naomi Cowan) and “QUARANTINE SLIDE” engage themes of escapism, commenting on topics like social media obsession and interrupted love, while Jamaican music great Tarrus Riley joinsRunkus on the jazzy, soulful closing track “MAKE IT BREATHE”. IN:SIDE is supported by IN:SIDE Portmore, a mini-doc filmed during the project’s recording, as well as videos for “$$$”, “5Gs” and “QUARANTINE SLIDE”.We want to hear from you! An in-depth conversation with Steve "Urchin" Wilson, a part of Sean Paul's management for the past 18 + years. We discussed how Steve has been pushing the culture in nightlife and through his work in the recording industry. He shares how he got started in the business, and his thoughts on Jamaica getting more hardcore about honoring reggae icons. We touched on strategies for harnessing the economic potential of reggae, the Sean Paul success formula, and much more. *Steve "Urchin" Wilson Bio* After getting his start at Bob Marley's legendary Tuff Gong record label as a marketing exec, Steve spent 10 years cross-training in every imaginable area in the entertainment industry including a stint as studio manager for the GeeJam Studios where he oversaw studio sessions for The Roots, Common, The Gorillaz, No Doubt & The Jungle Brothers amongst others. In 2001 this Jamaican trailblazer signed on to help pilot the dizzying career of multi-platinum Grammy winner Sean Paul. He spent the last 15 years traveling to over 100 countries and presiding over logistics, booking, touring, promotion & recording for the Dancehall superstar. While honing his role as a reggae ambassador Wilson simultaneously plotted to bring EDM & house music to his Homebase of Kingston via his Brand New Machine party series that saw super DJs like Diplo, Bob Sinclar, CongoRock & Toddla T spin in Jamaica for the first time. He has gone on to export the BNM party concept to Montego Bay, Cayman, London & New York City. Steve is also partners in FSOR Music (Future Sound Of Reggae) a boutique label that has featured releases from Mink Jo, Transdub Massiv, Naomi Cowan, Jesse Royal & Craigy T amongst others. Most recently he was one of the local partners of the initial staging of the critically acclaimed Tmrwtday Culture Festival in Negril, Jamaica. We had the pleasure of interviewing Sevana over Zoom video! Born Anna-Sharé Blake in Jamaica’s parish of Westmoreland, Sevana coined her name after Savannah-La-Mar, the picturesque coastal town where she grew up. Her musical awakening began at eight years old over a hearty Sunday morning breakfast, when she broke out in an impromptu rendition of Celine Dion’s “A New Day” for her family. She has come a long way since this epiphany at such an early age to now fulfilling her passions to the fullest. The 28-year-old singer, who is also an actress and model, is a quintessential triple threat of talent. Her burgeoning abilities are now backed by reggae star Protoje’s management and label company In.Digg.Nation Collective. Sevana recently signed with Six Course/RCA Records as part of In.Digg.Nation’s partnership to release her major label debut. Hailing from Jamaica gives any artist a certain legitimacy, but it also brings certain expectations — ones which Sevana lives up to and exceeds. While reflecting the island’s musical sensibilities in some ways, her vocals are strongly influenced by modern R&B, evoking such soul queens as Beyoncé, Jazmine Sullivan and Adele.Although Sevana got her musical break in 2008 with the girl group SLR, placing third place on Digicel Rising Stars (Jamaica’s equivalent of American Idol), it was not until years later that her career came into focus. In 2014, she impacted the chorus of  “Sudden Flight” from Protoje’s album Ancient Future. She made regular live appearances alongside Protoje and his band Indiggnation. Instantly comfortable, confident and engaging in live performances, she flourished on stage. In July 2015, she joined the Ancient Future Tour across Europe where she got her first taste of life on the road. Her 2016 self-titled EP was a six-song project that shared honest stories from her childhood, feelings of love and thoughts of letting go. Sevana’s first European solo tour followed. Two years later the singer delivered her infectious anthem “Sometime Love.” The single received heavy rotation in Jamaica and the U.K. (featured as BBC 1Xtra’s Mista Jam’s “Jam Hot” Record of the Week). Sevana has also recorded live sessions for BBC in Jamaica with David Rodigan. In Summer 2019, she dropped her upbeat dancehall-flavored jam “Nobody Man” (released via Easy Star Records/In.Digg.Nation Collective), which showcased her “stunning vocal range” (COMPLEX). Later in the fall, she joined a cast of Jamaica’s leading singers – including Jaz Elise, Lila Iké, and Naomi Cowan – on the all-female riddim compilation Rock & Groove. Sevana’s contribution “Haul and Pull” was selected as the Coldest Record for BBC Radio 1 with Toddla T.Over the past year, Sevana landed festival performances at Boomtown (UK), Reggae Geel (Germany) and Rototom Sunsplash (Spain), Sole DXB (Dubai) and joined Protoje on some of his major shows, including BRIC’s Celebrate Brooklyn! NYC concert and Jamaica’s largest annual music festival Reggae Sumfest. Sevana has earned notoriety by The FADER, NYLON, COMPLEX, VICE/Noisey, BBC (1Xtra), LargeUp and graced the cover of RIDDIM Magazine's SPRING 2019 issue. In addition to her singing career, she played the starring role in the groundbreaking Jamaican web series, Losing Patience, which aired on the country’s most popular TV network TVJ. Her photogenic, naturally radiant look has made her a favorite of photographers and fashion labels. Most recently, she was included in PUMA Middle East’s 2020 campaign along with labelmate Lila Iké.Be Somebody, Sevana’s 2020 EP is the next chapter in her song book. This latest release consists of all-new tracks that peel off Sevana’s layers in a metamorphosis of self, reflecting on personal growth, love and relationships. The EP’s title track “Be Somebody” sets an aspirational tone of Sevana becoming an individual and reaching one’s full potential despite overwhelming feelings of doubt amidst the pressures of the world. “Let me be greater than this,” Sevana wails with intensity. One of the album’s crown jewels is “Set Me On Fire,” produced by Protoje, J.L.L. and Paris Lamont Dennis II. It is a tale of revenge in a relationship where she turns her tragedy into triumph. On the more flirtatious track “Mango” produced by J.L.L., Sevana has space to flow in her sultry Jamaican accent over a minimal backdrop of airy synths and tickling guitar notes. Sevana’s benediction of how far her love and loyalty would travel on the EP’s first single “If You Only Knew” is even more contagious sung in her falsetto. Kelsey Gonzalez, producer and guitarist for Anderson .Paak’s Free Nationals band is at the helm of this track.Sevana’s Be Somebody EP captures her quest to self discovery, complimented with minimally eloquent stripped-down production that gives room for her soaring vocals and emotive lyrics to take center stage.“For the EP, I wanted to add songs that covered various thoughts and my beliefs. I took the bars off my mind. I did not want to compromise sonically, so I  just wrote, in an honest way, honoring the melodies as they came out of me. I wanted to take the listener on a meaningful journey and I think I did that,” Sevana says about her latest body of work.We want to hear from you! When Protoje gathered four recording artistes and asked each one to sing a powerful song on a single vibesy riddim, reggae music fans were gifted with "Peace of Mind," "Haul & Pull," "Inspiration," and a fourth single that borrows its title from the riddim itself, "Rock & Groove."  But, when FOR POSTERITY gathered those same recording artistes -- Naomi Cowan, Sevana, Lila Iké, and Jaz Elise -- to talk about living life in the spotlight, what I experienced was a rich and nuanced conversation about being Jamaican women and “role models,” unapologetic self-expression in 2020, the chance to inspire individuality, taking time to recharge the self, silencing randoms and trolls, and sitting in one's purpose with a good book in hand. As you listen to Episode 2, notice how my guests come alive at the possibility of working with women producers in Jamaica and the reality that the musical atmosphere is changing.  Yes, more and more it is becoming a welcoming community of collaboration. These amazing ladies show that Koffee's big Grammy win in the reggae category is both the culmination of decades of little steps and the commencement of even bigger steps for women in Jamaica's contemporary music world. In this episode of The Couragecast, I'm chatting with Naomi Cowan, talented singer-songwriter about her decision to leave a successful career in media to pursue her legacy as a reggae artist in Jamaica. Naomi is by far one of the most effervescent women you will ever encounter. She is kind and compassionate to everyone she meets which is one of the reasons she has been able to share her voice and beliefs cross-generationally.    As the daughter of the reggae icon Tommy Cowan Carlene Davis, she felt a strong pull towards her roots and this fall released the single “Things You Say You Love” which has had tremendous success and given her a platform to give back to the community she grew up in.    In this episode, Naomi shares how she came to the realization that it was time for her to risk her comfortable life in Toronto and pursue her calling to be a reggae artist. Although she was hesitant to give up other dreams she had for her life, she knew that she had to take this one step of boldness to see what would happen from her step of obedience. Known for raunchy lyrics, she ventured into social commentary on her single "Black Hypocrisy." She can be a positive influence for young women the way she is controlling the media right now.Queen Ifrica has wowed audiences at festivals like Rebel Salute and Reggae Sumfest for the past several years. Her songs have broached the toughest topics from incest to skin bleaching. She sings out against crime, unhealthy diets, corruption, and other evils. Queen Ifrica is also well-rounded and able to discuss love and sexuality in tasteful ways.Leaders of the new school:Reggae revivalist Jah9 is as refreshing as she is an enigmatic force. Their music gets to the forefront in the major media channels more often than not. Selectors and radio disc jockeys have been doing more following than innovating. Their playlists feature the same raunchy songs, with few attempts to introduce more diverse subject matter. It seems quite difficult to get played as a new performer. This only entices young upcoming women to embrace the same age-old cliche - sex sells.Spice, who many refer to as the new Queen of Dancehall signed her record deal in 2009. Since then, her label has failed to release a full-length studio album of her songs. We dissect this issue trying to figure out how this could even happen. With this climate how can new female artists get discovered while avoiding exploitation? How can we achieve more balance on the lineups of shows and concerts? How can radio, dancehall, and mixtape playlists become more diverse? How can reggae music, a genre that once stood as a voice for the voiceless embrace its own women? How can we become less hypocritical as an industry and as a society? In this, the age of the #metoo movement, and "Surviving R. Kelly," it is imperative that we protect and support our women.
