The Large is a perfect example of the sort of figure we want to talk about on No Tags. She's been a savvy behind-the-scenes operator for over 15 years, coming of age in London's late ‘00s DIY clubbing era as a promoter, DJ, radio host and blogger. It was in the early part of the next decade, however, that she came into her own at Mixpak, the New York-based label that did more than any to connect the dots between the Caribbean, the UK and US in the 2010s. As label manager, Suze worked with Vybz Kartel, Murlo, Jubilee, Palmistry and more – but none made as seismic an impact as Popcaan, whose first two albums had Suze at the helm. Her crowning glory however, came in the summer of 2016 when Mixpak (and a weighty extended crew) triumphed in London's Wembley Arena at Red Bull's flagship Culture Clash event, to a global viewing audience of millions. As we find out in this episode, Suze was at the heart of that success, organising hundreds of exclusive dubplates and guest appearances to leverage their soundclash victory, including Spice, Popcaan, J Hus, Tony Matterhorn, Sneakbo, Kranium and Drake. We spoke to Suze about her decade in NYC, the mechanics of releasing music in 2024, the inside scoop on Culture Clash, dancehall's historical relationship with the US-UK press machine, the emergence of Latin America and Korea as global pop music forces, the difference between drunk crowds and ketamine crowds, and much, much more. Thanks for listening to No Tags. Craig Serani Marsh (born 7 June 1982), known professionally as Serani, is a Jamaican dancehall singer and producer who has a joint venture deal with Phase One Communications in NYC. He is best known for his involvement in Sean Paul's album The Trinity and his 2008 single "No Games" 2006–2008: Early career/Production credits In 2006, Serani co-produced the first two singles on Sean Paul's platinum album The Trinity, including "We Be Burnin'", which was the first released single. "We Be Burnin'" track helped Trinity break a Jamaican record of 107,000 copies sold in the first week. Serani also produced the album Smash riddim, which hosts the song "Dutty Wine" by Tony Matterhorn. Dutty Wine was the number one song in Jamaica and England for a lengthy period of time. Serani is credited for helping bring into the limelight other Jamaican heavyweights such as Mavado, Alaine Laughton and Bugle with his catchy beats such as the Anger Management riddim on which Mavado voiced his landmark hit "Real McCoy". DASECA productions has also produced hits for other Reggae icons such as their colleague and Alliance crew leader Bounty Killer, Busy Signal and Vybz Kartel amongst many others. They are also the backbone of The Alliance affiliated band Anger Management. His first and very successful attempt at singing was on Mavado's hit song Dying which is featured on the latter's début album Gangsta for Life: The Symphony of David Brooks. He sang the hook and Mavado chanted the verses. 2008–present: Rise to fame and No Games In 2008, Serani landed a contract to record two albums for JVC Entertainment, before going on to sign the deal with Phase One. Serani self-produces most of his own songs and has promoted singles such as "Doh" featuring Bugle, "No Games" and "She Loves Me". In 2012, he performed at the Ride Club in Vienna. In 2020, "No Games" was sampled by Eminem for "Farewell" which appeared on the rapper's album Music to Be Murdered By. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/worldmusicviews/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/worldmusicviews/support

Live on Saturday July 4, 2020, at 7:30 PM EDT Death in the Arena (DITA) soundclash featuring 9X World Clash Champion, Pink Panther, versus legendary selector, Tony Matterhorn, all hosted by Walshy Fire of Major Lazer & MC Nuffy. “Coming off the high from the Beenie-Bounty Verzuz battle, there is a renewed love for clashes and we want to get the people who are perhaps the most important part of any clash involved in the conversation,” Chauncey Henry, promoter of the event, said. Henry told The Weekend Star that his aim is to celebrate selectors and keep them at the centre of Jamaica's musical culture. “We can't leave the DJs out of it and so we are doing this to show that they are just as important as the artistes when it comes on to clashes.” Read more online: https://lazereggae.wordpress.com/2020/07/04/clash-news-death-in-the-arena-tony-matterhorn-to-battle-pink-panther-in-clash-july-4/ . Hola ppl this episode is going to be short because of unexpected difficulties but the show MUST go on! So here we are discussing Omarosa getting fired, Nelly plans to take legal action after case of rape is thrown out, Zimmerman threatens Jay Z for Trayvon Martin documentary, P. Diddy plans to buy the Panthers, and Alkaline and Tony Matterhorn beef
2x World Clash winners King Turbo are musically armed, dangerous and dead set on a winning streak, as they ready to compete for a second time in "Sound Clash at Sea" -- the annual sound clash aboard the "Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise." Winning Irish and Chin's World Clash grants the Canadian sound a chance to compete in the popular "Sound Clash at Sea," where they will face off against Mighty Crown, Tony Matterhorn and David Rodigan. King Turbo, featuring Slingshot and Ricky Turbo, edged out a fierce line up of contenders at World Clash with just the right music selections, hard hitting speeches and overall chemistry with the crowd. King Turbo's mix of attributes was the perfect recipe for victory, which they aim to repeat during the highly anticipated "Sound Clash at Sea" on Thursday, November 16 (the Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise sails November 13 - November 18, 2017). The Canadian sound certainly has the ability to win, as much to their credit, King Turbo is one of the very few sounds to hold 3 consecutive Irish and Chin clash titles, including Canada Rumble 2016, World Clash 2016 and World Clash 2017.
This week I touch on the beef with Bounty Killer, Foota Hype and Tony Matterhorn. Why I am over the Danielle D.I. vs Ishawna stuff. Orlando Octave vs. DJ. Bravo??

In the spirit of fairness, we will look for Bounty Killa's perspective at the earliest opportunity. Alliance fans, never fear! Following Beenie Man’s interview I was contacted by Dimmie Joe Muzic, management for Tanto Metro & Devonte who whole heartedly refute Beenie Man’s claim that he wrote and partly produced Tanto Metro & Devonte’s first hit, “Everyone Falls In Love Sometime”. Dimmie Joe Muzic have issued the following statement: "To whom it may concern, We would like to address the issue of wrongful information that was posted on your website in the form of an interview between Moses Davis also known as Beenie Man and Sarah C of Vibes 93.8 FM on August 13, 2008 08:55 AM. In the interview Beenie Man states that he was responsible for writing and partly producing everyone falls in love by Tanto Metro and Devonte and even implies that he is the one responsible for the Duo success in past years. These remarks can be seen as a blatant disregard of respect and professionalism and since they were not corrected I believe that it is our responsibility to clear the air so to speak and let it be know that Moses Davis A.K.A Beenie Man did not write this or any such song for Tanto Metro and Devonte nor has he ever been a part of the production on any project that the duo has worked on. The song Everyone Falls in Love Sometimes was written by Devonte. Yes it is true that the two acts were at the same production company for many years and share many connections and aspects of the music business however their individual careers and creative aspects have never been intertwined in such a fashion. We feel that it is our responsibility to put an end to this untrue rumor, thus it would be our pleasure to do an interview via phone if necessary. It would also please us if you could organize a retraction or correction of the statement on your website. We appreciate your cooperation and included in this email is our contact information for future reference. Thank You and Much Respect. Dimmie Joe Music Ltd. Representatives of Tanto Metro and Devonte. -- Dimmie Joe Muzik Ltd. 5 Springvale Avenue, Kingston 10 dimmiejoemuzik@gmail.com www.myspace.com/dimmiejoemuzik "/end of statement The mischievous side of Sarah C wonders what inspired the lyric “beep beep who’s got the keys to my jeep”. I look forward to catching up with Tanto Metro and Devonte in the near future to hear their side of the story.
Jamaican producers may be pressing less and less vinyl but the island still churned out around two thousand 7" singles last year and these are our favourite rowdy ones. In the words of a Heatwave regular who got a sneak preview of the mix: "Who am I? The dancehall king" A look back at 2007 enables you to go from the filthy, nasty but undeniably inspirational sex talk of Beenie Man, Chamelion and 'Sweet' C to the sparse vocal angriness of that old Elephant bloke and then surrender to the leg-lifting power of the Matterhorn man. And you're just getting started. "Everybody start tek way yourself. Follow the riddim and tek way yourself" What jumps out when you listen to these tracks all together is the control each artist commands. You feel at their mercy, and they're merciless. Whether it's the riddims coming in that you know you know - but you don't know you know until you hear the drop, and then you're shaking your shit so hard you're not sure what you know any more - or the fierceness of the lyrics that are flying at you like you're in a video game and you can't move quick enough so you just start letting them hit you. Just. Let. Go. "Have you heard about that little boy in Jamaica?" Militaristic beats dropping left, right and centre make you feel like you're a kind of bashment brigadier going over the top of the trench. It's weird when you've hated so much of what Shaggy has put out in the past to hear him rip the arsehole out of the Heathen riddim. I thought there were no lyrics that could excuse Angel. "Return of the Indian. Truths and rights weh we come to tell the nation" Like most years, 2007 leaves you with the perplexing problem of Sean Paul. It basically comes down to the fact that your legs and hips and arse have more respect for his voice than your brain. It's a bit like when Elephant Man provides the sting in the tail of the whole mix with Three Step on the Madness riddim. You'd like to sit down and have a rest, drink a cup of tea or maybe work on your New Year's resolutions, but it all just has you reaching for the rewind button yet again.
