A big orchestral track on Tru Thoughts from the forthcoming Benji Bower & the Terra Collective Orchestra album. Hip Hop from the Pataka Boys and De La Soul feat MF Doom. A classic from Portishead. Zach Witness reworks the classic Hot Music. Quality club music from Mystery Tiime. A quality remix of the Cengiz tune MOTF. Brand new music from Tara Lily plus Drum & Bass from Roni Size Reprazent feat Bahamadia and Phaze One (using a classic Tom & Jerry inspired Jungle sample). Reggae from Sister Carol, Sugar Minot, Quantic & Alice Russell feat U-Roy. Plus plenty more music treats.

Celluloid Pudding: Movies. Film. Discussions. Laughter. History. Carrying on.

Sam and Beth roll it back to discuss this quintessential 80s classic directed by Jonathan Demme. It could be argued that this film was responsible for launching the careers of Melanie Griffith, Jeff Daniels, and Ray Liotta —who would all go on to long success as perennial A-Listers (RIP Ray ❤️). It also solidified the status of artists like David Byrne, and Laurie Anderson in popular culture as pioneers and innovators in music. The soundtrack is extensive with 29 songs featuring The Feelies and an iconic performance by Sister Carol (one of Demme's favorite artists and who he also featured in Married to the Mob). We go heavy into the discussion about what defines the true 80s aesthetic, and the authentic early 80s experience —something we think that filmmakers frequently get wrong. This film is a beautiful snapshot of a particularly special time in NYC, where people of all walks of life were creating a scene and making things happen. NYC was going through a time of reimagining and reinvention. Demme's film unfolds to reveal an experience that is one of thousands of tales from the city, and provides the texture and sound that is the closest thing to actually living it. There is no King without a Queen. It's Ying/Yang. It's love underground. Surprised it hasn't happened sooner or more often, or maybe it has, but not much better than Killer Mike and Damien Marely releasing RUN and the Jr. Gong Version is what we are here for - the world music of Africa and the Dub of Jamaica and the 13th incarnation of Brox Hip-Hop - whatever that sounds like now, coming together. Rarely done better. Big up to the talent that runs through the Marely family. Another favorite artist, and my good friend, IzMpande has always mixed DIY beats with the blood of his native Africa and a continuing spirituality. It's a message of truth through pain and growth. Anyone spoiled brat can cry with a hangover, how about fighting on the side of a higher power. There is a new Bob Marely film, and I'm skeptical - but who knows. This mix is also dedicated to MLK. Featuring Killer Mike, Damian Marley, Khalab, Mexican Institute Of Sound, IzMpande, Earl Sweatshirt, The Alchemist, Janelle Monáe, Sister Nancy, Feminine HiFi, Sister Carol, Bob Marleys & The Wailers, Orbital, David Holmes and loads more. When evil proliferates, why do so few people actively stand against it? Why do we sometimes allow ourselves to remain indifferent? It's a question that we could pose on Germans and the West in World War II, it's a question we could pose on the West today in light of Hamas' atrocities of October 7. And perhaps it's a question we can pose on ourselves.Dr. Carol Rittner is an American nun and Holocaust historian. She is a Distinguished Emerita Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies and Dr. Marsha Raticoff Grossman Professor of Holocaust Studies at Stockton University.Dr. Rittner produced a film titled The Courage to Care which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject).  Dr. Rittner is also the former director of the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity.Follow us to join the conversation!https://shmoozing.nethttps://www.facebook.com/groups/5871772776273202https://twitter.com/moshezeldman

He is the author of three volumes of poetry, Invocations 1980, A Mural by the Sea 2017 (City Twilight 2020), and Jayden and the King of the Brooklyn Carnival, (co-authored with Yolanda Lezama-Clark, 2019), Dawad's collection of poems is an homage not only to our elusive “Sweet Trinidad” but to the many homes and everyday people he encountered in his pilgrimage through life. Some of his poems discern echoes of the distinctive riddims of Andre Tanker's “Back Home” and Sir Derek Walcott's intimations in “Hic Jacket,” and have appeared in anthologies including Steppingstones, Bomb, Caribbean Voices, Poetry International, Voicing Our Vision and New Rain. A recipient of New York State Fellowship on the Arts (Poetry), he has performed his works around the Caribbean, U.S., Canada; Riga, Latvia; Moscow and St. Petersburg. Selected poems of his, have been translated into Russian by the former Leningrad Writers Union. Philip keeps an active hand in the annual Trinidad Carnival and further afield as a costume designer and mas-maker, after winning back in the day, mas band awards in San Fernando Carnival. He was instrumental in the genesis of Jazz on the San Fernando Hill and gave birth (with others) to We People Mas, an all-inclusive mas band in South with designs reminiscent of mas icon Peter Minshall. After living and working in Brooklyn for nearly four decades as a poet, journalist and artist, Philip has since resettled in his hometown of ‘Sando' San Fernando, Trinidad. A Mural by the Sea (2018), a film by the late playwright/filmmaker Tony Hall, is based on selected poems from the book of the same title. His latest book Ayedemah, which means “We are a proud nation” is the precursor to another deep dive into the 100 years of New York Carnival. His works will shortly be entered into the Library of Congress. He remains active in the annual carnival with the National Carnival Commission in Trinidad, as well as being a J'Ouvert advisor to the Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Culture --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ozzie-stewart/support

No amount of persuasion is adequate if we fail to hear the word of God with our hearts and implement it into our daily lifestyle. In many ways, the Christian life is like planting a garden. However, a bountiful yield depends upon the investment of our time, labor, and love spent on our knees. A gardener who remains on his porch admiring the plot allocated for growth will only see the infiltration of weeds and pests choking the life out of the potential of that garden. In the words of Sister Carol, we are our biggest stumbling block (as spiritual gardeners) to producing an abundant life in Christ.

Singer Songwriter Davanna Sweet talks about her Reggae Roots and a journey in Music that has taken her all around the world. Davanna Sweet, born in Brooklyn, New York, daughter of a mother well known as a record   producer/singer/songwriter and an ambassador of reggae music and a father, who has made a legendary mark as part of the reggae trio "The Meditations", knew she was destined for stardom. Throughout her life, being surrounded by many great reggae artists like; Marcia Griffiths, Earl 16, Dave Barker, Freddie McGregor, Sister Carol as she recalls, her journeys throughout childhood traversed global trails from New York to California, to England and Jamaica, then on to West Africa by the age of 18. Davanna began her musical endeavors in The Gambia, as she worked alongside well-known, established MCA recording group "The Boys" now known as the "Sons of Light", where she had the fortunate opportunity to work on projects, singing background vocals produced by them in bringing out new talent within the African community. ***Due to Copyright all original song audio has been removed from this recording.*** --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/koolkard/support

No matter how bleak you think it looks or how weak you think you are, "let the weak say I am strong, let the poor say I am rich because of what the Lord has done for us, give thanks."

In this episode, we continue our conversation with Sister Carol Ann from December, when she gave us an overview of the Church’s role in social justice and the history of the sisters’ political activism over the years.    You can hear how passionate Sister Carol Ann is as she explains how the monastery prioritizes their efforts to get to the root cause of societal issues in the local community, such as hunger and environmental welfare.   We start this episode discussing the various organizational layers within the Catholic Church and how those layers may or may not be aligned in their stances on social justice.

In the fifth episode of "Plague," Mike visits the small Midwestern city of Belleville, Illinois, where a Catholic Sister broke ground in the 1980s by opening an organization to provide services for people living with HIV and AIDS. Though she was a trained ICU and ER nurse, Sister Carol Baltosiewich had much to learn about the disease before she could help treat it. So she journeyed to New York City with another sister to volunteer at Catholic hospitals on the front lines of the AIDS crisis. That experience dramatically changed Sister Carol's perspective. She witnessed firsthand the suffering people with AIDS experienced, along with their partners and family members. But it was the deep love present amidst the suffering that truly changed her. She would come to realize that ministering to people with HIV and AIDS first required a sincere self-examination. As she put it, "You can't even deal with AIDS until you first face your own prejudices and biases." Sister Carol returned to Belleville and got to work. She set up a helpline to answer questions about HIV and AIDS, which turned into a highly respected AIDS service organization known as "Bethany Place". Learn more at www.americamag.org/plague. In this episode, we rejoin Sister Carol Ann, whom we previously met on the seventh episode of this podcast when she gave us some insights into the value and meaning of prayer. She wears many hats at the monastery as the forest manager, water system coordinator, and social justice office coordinator.   This week, we have a compelling discussion about the history of the Church and social justice. She walks us through the role of the Church, and more specifically, the sisters, during the Civil Rights movement and their political activism. She also shares with us her personal view on non-believers, which many non-believers may be pleasantly surprised to hear.

Last episode wrapped up our 4-part episode exploring some of the ways that some Sisters came to be at the Monastery (and I encourage you to go back and listen to those if you haven’t already). Today’s episode starts out with a similar story from Sister Carol Ann, about how she came to be at St. Gertrude’s and what her life was like before that. But from there we take a detour into some deep insights into the value and meaning of prayer, from the recited but heartfelt prayers of her parents, to the 2000 year history of Benedictine community prayer. Her explanation helped me to understand much more deeply what prayer means to this community, and I hope it brings you insight as well.

Meet Dyrol Randall (A/K/A Chops).  He’s an internationally recognized drummer who has recorded and performed with headliners such as Sister Carol, Mykal Rose, The Original Wailers, Judy Mowatt, and more.  He currently performs with Reggae band Jahfari.  A few weeks ago, I finally had the chance to visit this cool place called Skipper’s Smokehouse which is a bit of a shack style restaurant with the best fried green tomatoes and alligator bites.  But, just as great is their food, is their music.  Jahfari was playing.  We decided to go and check it out and was so glad we did cause they rocked the house!  I became mesmerized with Dyrol’s playing.  His unique style really caught my attention.  And, so did the sound of his drums.  It was a school night and had to wake early so I didn’t catch the whole show, but, I was lucky enough to meet him as I was leaving the building.  There he was taking a break with his crew and I introduced myself and we got to talking.  I asked him if he’d be a guest on the show and was thrilled when he said “yeh man”.  (I’ve been to Jamaica a number of times and loooove it).  Dyrol was born in Jamaica.  His early mentors include Peter Brown, a 7-string bass player who taught him to “hold the groove together and let the music glide through the soul”.  His YouTube channel has over a million hits where he has a channel of drum instruction videos.  You’ve got to check it out! So, take a listen to Dyroll’s interview here. If you like this episode, please be sure to subscribe and pay it forward.  And, If you happen to be in the Tampa area, be sure to pop over to Skipper’s Smokehouse for a bite to eat, grab a pint and a soak up a cool band! He’s performed all over the United States with many artists including Yellowman, Eek-a-Mouse, Jimmy Cliff, Third World, AfroMan, Justin Hinds, Culture, DMX, De La Soul, Black Eyed Peas, Lupe Fiasco, Das Efx, MatisYahu, Chris Berry, Toots & The Maytals, The Meditations, Sister Carol, Vanilla Ice and many more. Peewee’s band Dread I Dread has twice been honored as the Minnesota Reggae Artists of the Year. Peewee is Chair of 40 out of Poverty. "The initiative to help our disadvantaged communities connect with business and help foster these relationships for better communities". 40 out of poverty is helping homeless youth create opportunity through community business partnership. 40 out of Poverty is devoted to motivating the hearts and minds of children (and adults) to develop social awareness and engagement. The idea is to assist them in becoming intimately connected to the environment and to aid working families to economic stability. 40 out of Poverty is focused on addressing and providing solutions for the national food desert crisis. 40 out of Poverty's sustainability program will bring fresh, organic produce, weekly, to urban communities across the nation, at a price that is affordable. children are hungry they are not focused. If they are not eating the right fruits and vegetables they are sick. If fresh organic produce is not available to children and families it's called disparity. 40 out of Poverty addresses this crisis.

Many women have made a name for themselves in the male-dominated genre of Reggae music. Here we speak of some current notables and analyze some of the issues that have always existed. There is always a balance of positive and negative and we touch on that in this Reggae Lover episode.Of the several female artists that continue to hold their own, here are some highlights:Etana has produced above average music for at least the past 10 years. She earned a nomination for Best Reggae Album at the upcoming 61st Annual Grammy Awards for her latest project, Reggae Forever. She is the first female nominee in that category since Sister Carol in 1997, and the fourth ever.Spice became the first reggae artist to cross the 1 million followers mark on Instagram. Known for raunchy lyrics, she ventured into social commentary on her single "Black Hypocrisy." The song, which tackles the issue of colorism is on her Billboard chart-topping mixtape entitled "Captured." I hope that Spice tackles more serious issues in the future. She can be a positive influence for young women the way she is controlling the media right now.Queen Ifrica has wowed audiences at festivals like Rebel Salute and Reggae Sumfest for the past several years. Her songs have broached the toughest topics from incest to skin bleaching. She sings out against crime, unhealthy diets, corruption, and other evils. Queen Ifrica is also well-rounded and able to discuss love and sexuality in tasteful ways.Leaders of the new school:Reggae revivalist Jah9 is as refreshing as she is an enigmatic force. She's a yoga practitioner and poet turned reggae performing artist. Her dancehall career was nurtured by RoryStoneLove who produced her debut album. Jah9's lyrics are deep, thought-provoking, and meaningful. Her music is powerful yet diverse. The 17-year-old singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Koffee, emerged as a star in 2018. Her single's, "Burning," and "Raggamuffin," gained local and international attention. Look out for her new hit, "Toast," which looks to be an even bigger smash.Lila Ike is one of the protege's of Grammy-nominated reggae revival leader Protoje. She was a unique style and flair with songs about love and socioeconomic topics.Twenty-one-year-old Yanah is known as "The Tiny Powerhouse." With a hand-full of songs released to date, she has captivated listeners. Her delivery is sultry and passionate.Sevana is another songstress working with Protoje's In.Digg.Nation Collective record label. She stood out on "A Bit Too Shy" and "Sudden Flight" which featured Jesse Royal. Sevana has an amazing sound - one of the sweetest voices to come out of Jamaica in a long time.Naomi Cowan came out with a fun 2018 single called "Paradise Plum." She has an R&B/soul, reggae vibe and is actually the daughter of musician Tommy Cullen and singer Carlene Davis. She spent time in Canada where she went to college and then earned a Masters in digital media. After some time running her parent's businesses, she has turned her focus to a music career. Look out for big things from Naomi!Kristine Alicia's 2nd album "Songs from Zion" debuted in 2017. Produced by RoryStoneLove and featuring Dean Fraser, the 11-track album is classic roots reggae with inspirational messages. Kristine's vocal prowess bolsters the project. Rory's Black Dub label has been grooming many promising female artists. The ever-versatile Keida and potent lyricist Karamanti both represent a strong female presence. Their content centers around themes of unity and consciousness. Karamanti launched her own record label, BlackWuman22 Music.Dancehall artist Dovey Magnum has risen to international fame in the past year. She's by far one of the most powerful female performers in her class and her talent is undeniable. Her spiritual side is expressed in "Prayers Me Use and Win," but her more popular anthems are X-rated. Dovey can definitely affect positive change by injecting conscious messages into her music.Kelissa is the daughter of the lead singers from the foundation group Chakula. She attended University in California where she toured extensively. Kelissa also performed and spent time in Africa gaining notoriety there. She has toured and collaborated with Chronixx in the studio as well.Other artists mentioned:Marcia Griffiths, Nadine Sutherland, Tanya Stephens, Lady Saw (Marion Hall), Lady Ann, Lady G, Sister Nancy, Sister Charmaine, and Shensea. The challenges:There are many other female artists out right whose music is only about sex and sexuality. Their music gets to the forefront in the major media channels more often than not. Selectors and radio disc jockeys have been doing more following than innovating. Their playlists feature the same raunchy songs, with few attempts to introduce more diverse subject matter. It seems quite difficult to get played as a new performer. This only entices young upcoming women to embrace the same age-old cliche - sex sells.Spice, who many refer to as the new Queen of Dancehall signed her record deal in 2009. Since then, her label has failed to release a full-length studio album of her songs. We dissect this issue trying to figure out how this could even happen. With this climate how can new female artists get discovered while avoiding exploitation? How can we achieve more balance on the lineups of shows and concerts? How can radio, dancehall, and mixtape playlists become more diverse? How can reggae music, a genre that once stood as a voice for the voiceless embrace its own women? How can we become less hypocritical as an industry and as a society? In this, the age of the #metoo movement, and "Surviving R. Kelly," it is imperative that we protect and support our women. This discussion may pose more questions than answers, but it spawns a dialogue that needs to be had.Add the names of female artists that should have been highlighted in this piece (tag them in the comments). Do you agree or disagree with the statements we have made? Do you have an answer to the questions posed? Let us know. Thanks for listening, reading, and sharing.
