The legal industry is undergoing a profound transformation as artificial intelligence moves from an experimental concept to an essential tool. Advanced systems like Agentic RAG are revolutionizing workflows, enabling tasks that once took weeks, such as complex M&A due diligence, to yield key obligations and renewal dates in minutes, dramatically reducing contract review time by up to 80%. However, this power demands unprecedented ethical responsibility and human oversight. Attorneys must vigilantly confront the risk of AI "hallucinations," the generation of fake legal citations that has already led to professional sanctions in court proceedings, ensuring meticulous verification and adherence to the duties of competence and diligence. Furthermore, firms must establish robust governance frameworks to keep sensitive client data private and secure, preventing potential breaches of attorney-client privilege and non-compliance with regulations like the UK GDPR. This shift toward technology-driven efficiency is compelling law firms to rethink old business models, as AI adoption places significant financial pressure on the traditional billable hour, necessitating a focus on clean data and hybrid AI-human workflows to define the future of practice. How Agentic RAG Is Transforming Legal Workflows And Redefining Attorney Efficiency2025-10-21 | Forbes.comStartup law firm wants to ‘live and breathe technology'2025-10-21 | Computer WeeklyInside $5bn Harvey: Chief business officer John Haddock on scaling a legal AI powerhouse2025-10-21 | NonBillable.co.ukLaw Firm Metrics: Why Law Firms Struggle with Data Chaos (and What to Do About It)2025-10-21 | Articles, Tips and Tech for Law Firms and LawyersLawyerist Podcast How to Stay Human in the Age of AI-Driven Law Firm Marketing, with Conroy Creative2025-10-21 | Legal Talk NetworkWhere AI and Legality Collide2025-10-21 | Prevue Meetings & IncentivesLegalOn Buys Fides, Expands Beyond Contract AI2025-10-21 | Artificial LawyerHarvey: Inside the $5bn legal AI startup taking over Big Law with chief business officer John Haddock2025-10-21 | NonBillable.co.ukWestminster launches new Centre for Legal Education and the Legal Profession to shape next generation of lawyers2025-10-21 | University of WestminsterFunding Success: Syntracts Secures $5.3M for Legal AI Growth2025-10-21 | InvestorsHangout.comJuro Goes Direct to ChatGPT For Contract AI2025-10-21 | Artificial LawyerWaymo's driverless taxi UK rollout puts legal system to the test2025-10-21 | City A.M.Exclusive: James Grandage joins Alt-V Law as legal transformation advisor2025-10-21 | Legal IT InsiderHearing People Out: AI and Access to Justice Case Studies from Australia2025-10-21 | Legaltech on MediumAI Accountability and Governance in Focus: Complaint Filed in DC District Court for AI Transparency in Federal Government, and Senate NDAA's Strategic Vision for AI — AI: The Washington Report2025-10-21 | Mintz LevinA nearly 100-year-old Swiss magazine builds a powerful ecosystem on top of legal services and AI2025-10-20 | INMA.orgData Debt, Diversity, and the Business of Law: A Conversation with BigHand's Catherine Krow2025-10-20 | 3 Geeks and a Law BlogAgentic AI: From statistical patterns to strategic partners2025-10-20 | Legal.ThomsonReuters.comThe Most Innovative Law Schools of 2025: Leading the Future of Legal Education2025-10-20 | JDJournalWhy State AI Laws Are Hurting Innovation and Your Bottom Line2025-10-20 | BlawgITAwards Restore Faith In The Profession — At Least For One Night2025-10-20 | Above The LawPreparing for the Legal AI Era with Ed Walters | ClioCon 20252025-10-20 | On the Road Podcast - Legal Talk NetworkHow It Works: A Demo of Eve Legal's Call Intake for Law Firms2025-10-20 | LawSitesLexisNexis Announces Commercial Availability of Protg General AI in Lexis+ AI2025-10-20 | WebWire | Recent HeadlinesVals Legal AI Research Eval – The Aftermath2025-10-20 | Artificial Lawyer

Why Most Leaders Fail at Emotional Intelligence (And the 5-Step System That Actually Works) Hey Friend! Building emotional intelligence is like building a house—and most leaders are trying to pick paint colors before laying the foundation. I realized this when I built my house on 5 acres in Oklahoma. My excitement about fixtures and finishes had to wait because my builder reminded me: "First we pick the elevation and style. That informs everything else." Your leadership development works the same way. If you've read EI books, taken assessments, and attended workshops but still feel like you're winging it under pressure, you're not broken—you're just building on unstable ground.
In this episode of 'Resilience Unraveled,' host Russell Thackeray chats with Tim Lupinacci, CEO and Chair of Baker Donelson, about leadership and resilience in the legal industry. THE Leadership Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Why vision, mission, and values still matter in 2025—if leaders make them real Not long ago, talking about “vision” often invited sneers. Leaders who spoke about visions were mocked as spouting psychobabble. Part of the cynicism came from the poor quality of early vision statements—trite platitudes that could double as sleeping aids. But times have changed. In 2025, vision, mission, and values are essential leadership tools, yet most organisations still struggle to make them resonate with staff. Why were visions mocked in the past? In the 1980s and 1990s, many vision statements were badly written—either too vague, too long, or too clichéd. Employees saw them as irrelevant. Cynical cultures, like Australia's, dismissed them as hollow leadership exercises. Fast-forward to today, and vision has become mainstream. Companies in Japan, the US, and Europe frame it as a strategic anchor. But credibility remains the challenge: if employees can't recall the vision, they can't live it. Mini-Summary: Early visions failed because they were clichéd or irrelevant. Today they are vital, but only if staff remember and act on them. Do employees actually know their company's vision, mission, and values? Research and field experience suggest most don't. Trainers often test this by flipping framed statements on the wall and asking staff to recite them. Typically, no one remembers the vision or mission, and at best, a few values. In Japan, where employees pride themselves on discipline and detail, this gap is striking. It shows that leadership communication is failing. Employees can't live what they can't recall. Mini-Summary: Most employees cannot recite their organisation's vision, mission, or values—evidence that communication and ownership are missing. Why do so many statements fail to inspire? There are two extremes: bloated statements too long to recall, or cut-down slogans so short they become vapid clichés. Both kill engagement. Worse, leaders often draft them alone, without wordsmithing skills or input from employees. Even when teams co-create content, turnover means newcomers feel no ownership. In Japan, where lifetime employment has eroded, this turnover effect is magnified. Leaders must find mechanisms to refresh ownership constantly. Mini-Summary: Vision and value statements fail when they're too long, too short, or disconnected from employees—especially in high-turnover environments. What practices help embed vision into daily work? One proven method is daily repetition. Ritz-Carlton Hotels review their values at every shift worldwide, with even junior staff leading the discussion. Inspired by this, Dale Carnegie Tokyo holds a “Daily Dale” every morning, where team members take turns to lead the session and recites the vision, mission, and values and discuss one of 60 Dale Carnegie Human Relations Principles. This practice ensures even new hires quickly internalise the culture. Egalitarian leadership—having secretaries, not just presidents, lead—also deepens ownership. Mini-Summary: Embedding vision requires daily rituals, repetition, and egalitarian involvement, not just posters on walls. Should companies also create a “strategic vision”? Yes. Many visions describe identity—who we are and what we stand for—but not direction. During the pandemic, Dale Carnegie Tokyo added a “Strategic Vision” to articulate where the company was heading. In 2025, with Japan navigating digital transformation, demographic decline, and global competition, leaders need both: a cultural compass (vision, mission, values) and a directional map (strategic vision). Without both, organisations drift. Mini-Summary: Companies need two visions: a cultural compass for identity, and a strategic vision for direction—especially in turbulent times. How can leaders bring visions to life in 2025? Leaders must test whether employees know the vision, mission, and values. If they don't, leaders should redesign communication and embedding processes. Mechanisms like daily recitation, story-sharing, and recognition linked to values make culture tangible. The post-pandemic world has raised expectations: employees want meaningful work, and customers want values-driven partners. Leaders who treat vision statements as wallpaper risk being left behind. Mini-Summary: Leaders bring visions to life by testing recall, embedding practices into daily routines, and aligning recognition with values. Conclusion Vision, mission, and values were once dismissed as leadership fluff. Today, they are essential but often forgotten or poorly implemented. In 2025, leaders in Japan and globally must transform them into living tools—clear, repeatable, and tied to both culture and strategy. If your team can't recite your vision, mission, and values today, you don't have a culture—you have a poster. Interview with Niël Pretorius, CEO of DRDGOLD Ltd.Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/drdgold-nysedrd-gold-recovery-from-historical-tailings-7131Recording date: 15th July 2025As gold prices reach unprecedented levels, DRD Gold CEO Niël Pretorius offers a compelling blueprint for mining leadership during turbulent market conditions. His approach combines conservative capital allocation with strategic opportunism, providing valuable lessons for the broader mining sector.Pretorius identifies a fundamental shift in gold market dynamics over the past four years, where sustained accumulation by non-Western central banks has created new price support mechanisms. This "counter dynamic" has helped gold rebase at higher levels, even during periods of Western market pessimism. For South African producers like DRD Gold, current conditions offer particular advantages through natural currency hedging—producing in rand while selling in US dollars creates what Pretorius calls "a double benefit."The CEO's capital allocation philosophy emphasizes dividend distribution and operational optimization over speculative expansion. "I believe that a business is there to generate cash flow," he states, advocating for full commodity price exposure rather than revenue protection strategies. This approach prioritizes sustainable growth through extending existing mine life by 18-20 years and modest production increases, rather than pursuing headline-grabbing acquisitions.Risk management remains central to Pretorius's strategy. Despite favorable market conditions, he maintains skepticism about price sustainability, advocating for accelerated capital investment while conditions remain favorable. "We know it can change overnight," he warns, emphasizing the importance of building resilience for future volatility. The CEO champions financial transparency, dismissing complex accounting metrics in favor of fundamental questions: profitability, debt levels, and capital coverage capability. His emphasis on practical indicators like insurance coverage demonstrates sophisticated risk assessment beyond traditional financial metrics.Pretorius's leadership philosophy reveals how successful mining executives balance opportunistic investment with conservative risk management, maintaining operational excellence while adapting to evolving market structures. His approach offers investors a framework for evaluating mining leadership quality during periods of unprecedented market conditions.View DRDGOLD's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/drdgold-limited Sign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Episode Quotes:Giving back is a gift for students and a reward for yourself.[7:55] Nick Marsh:The goal of going, I think we're somewhere in the thirties right now, but if we are able to achieve getting to the top 10, the value of that degree goes up. You have the ability to change the outlook of not only the students but yourself as well. You can make your degree more powerful, and open more doors for yourself. I remember when I was in college, I thought I had no time. And then now that I'm a father of three and I'm like a full-time working stiff, I have found that I truly have no time now, but I still have the ability to chair this board and give back to the U in as many ways because I spent a whole lot of time at the U and I tried really hard to get my degree and I have the ability to make it worth more than what it was when I graduated in 2013. And you could do that with mentoring and, using your time to give back to the business school. What keeps our alumni tethered to the school?[10:38] I think the number one thing that I hear from almost everybody is that the opportunities that they had at the school to get a degree and then the following career changed their life. I know that was my case, right? I went there. I was on scholarship. And then I was able to launch a really successful career because of the University of Utah and also because people cared about me when I was there. I really do think most of us feel like it helped us and we want to give back. I think that's number one. I think another interesting fact is that a lot of the members who are on the advisory board have either got children or grandchildren, even, at the U. And so, they're also hearing, really, current information. And so, they have, really, relevant experience that they're getting, either back through their kids or grandkids or friends and family, you know, that also have students at the U today. So, I think that they are current, more than you'd think, with what's going on at the school. And they do participate heavily. How staying connected to the university benefited alums like Nick[14:43] Nick Marsh: I get the ability to meet people at Google, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, and Adobe, all the big companies around the valley that I want to meet. And so my network has gotten to grow [and] has bloomed because I have been active at the U. It's worked out really well that our school's gotten much more powerful.Paige shares what alums can do now to support students[18:13] Paige Erickson: I do think the main thing that we need to do more of is provide internships [and] real opportunities for students. Because what I've seen is many of these kids graduate, and they have all the technical skills in accounting or marketing, but they don't have relevant experience. And what business wants is both, they want them to be technically capable, but also to have the experience and the ability to work on projects and work on teams and collaborate together and not just have the core skills. So, I think that's another way people can provide ways because we don't have a lot of huge businesses in Salt Lake, but we have lots of small businesses. Giving them an opportunity to figure out a way that they can help students get experience, I think would be a really good way for alumni at any company to think about how they could help the youth.Show Links:Paige Erickson | LinkedInNick Marsh | LinkedInDavid Eccles School of Business (@ubusiness) | InstagramUndergraduate Scholars ProgramsRising Business LeadersEccles Alumni Network (@ecclesalumni) | Instagram Eccles Experience MagazineEBB S7E7 | Navigating the New AI Frontier feat. Episode Summary: France is America's oldest ally. We've been through a lot: the American Revolution over 250 years ago, two World Wars, and ongoing worldwide military operations. Our two nations have stood side by side when it mattered most. This connection endures. These days, it's more important than ever, considering China's rise, Russia's aggression in Europe, and other elements of instability we see around the globe. A key component of this security relationship depends on robust aerospace power. Modern military operations don't work without mastering these domains. Our adversaries know this, and that's why they're working hard to challenge us in these realms. Heather Penney discusses these variables with Brig Gen Nicolas Chambaz, the leader charged with overseeing international relations for the French Air and Space Force headquarters. He's a career pilot with over 4,000 flight hours under his belt, including 50 combat operations. In particular, we explore the French Air & Space Force's latest Strategic Vision, The Sky as a Battlefield. In this episode, I'm joined by a panel of experts to unpack how strategic thinking and technology can drive real impact in both business and healthcare. We discuss the power of establishing clear values and a strong value proposition, focusing on how aligning these elements empowers teams to innovate and collaborate effectively. I also share insights from my own experiences—like my time in Bhutan—on why empathy and personalization are essential to improving healthcare, and how leadership principles from sports can teach us resilience and accountability. As we aim to foster growth, I challenge everyone to adopt a “Try me” mindset over “Why me,” embracing responsibility as a step toward lasting impact.
