In this podcast episode, Larry Ostola talks to Robert D. Banks about his book, Warriors and Warships: Conflict on the Great Lakes and the Legacy of Point Frederick, published by Dundurn Press in 2023. In his book, Banks provides a detailed history of the shipbuilding at Point Frederick on Lake Ontario and its lasting legacy. Warriors and Warships illustrates this history by including colour archival maps, aerial views, photographs, and 3D reconstructions. Banks highlights this part of Canada's military history by describing the warships, and the people who built them in Point Frederick, from the late eighteenth to mid-nineteenth centuries. He further recounts the conflicts on Lake Ontario where these vessels played a role, including the War of 1812. Banks also draws attention to the influential figures of Upper Canada of the period, in addition to recounting the everyday lives of the warriors behind the warships. Robert Banks is a graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada and the University of Toronto. A former pilot, he served as a flight surgeon with the Snowbirds and specialized in aerospace medicine, a field where he's known for his research and his role as an investigator of the space Shuttle Columbia crash. A prolific author, he's published over 30 scientific papers and book chapters and has a long-standing interest in the history of Ontario and Canada. Image Credit: Library and Archives Canada, Acc. Today I share from an article I have failed to reference. Apologies for that. However, it pertains to how the enlightenment continues to have a limiting influence on the ways in which we relate to God. "The Enlightenment forced evangelicalism into adopting approaches to spirituality which have resulted in rather cool, detached, and rational approaches to Scripture. The traditional Quiet Time' has been deeply influenced by this outlook." "As Martin Luther constantly insisted, Christianity is concerned with totus homo, the "entire human person', not just the human mind. In this, Luther was doing nothing more than stressing the importance of maintaining a biblical understanding of human nature in every aspect of Christian living." "The Australian writer Robert Banks points out the implications for spirituality of this biblical view of human nature when he notes that spirituality concerns 'not only our spirit - also our minds, wills, imaginations, feelings and bodies." What do you think? Are your times of quiet still influenced by the enlightenment? How helpful is that, and how limiting is it? Please add your comments on this week's topic. We learn best when we learn in community.  Do you have a question about teaching the Bible? Is it theological, technical, practical? Send me your questions or suggestions. Today, I want to try and give you a picture of what going to church in the first century was like — what it looked and felt like, and how it embodied everything we've been talking about. But we have to start with a word or two about the phrase “going to church” and a few of the other phrases we use to talk about gathering together with other Christians — like “attending church” or referring to our gatherings as “services.” I find those terms inadequate and unhelpful, BECAUSE those terms fail to capture the intent of Christian assemblies AND what I think the earliest Christians experienced when they met. Ideas of attendance, ceremony, and even assembly just don't capture the spirit or purpose of early Christian gatherings. Early Christian gatherings were humble gatherings that edified Christians. They were small in scale, domestic in setting, rhetorically unpolished, ritually unimpressive, and mostly restricted to Christians. Their aim was not to impress the masses but rather to equip the Christians as individuals and communities to live their faith attractively. To this end, their gatherings fed them with spiritual food from the Word and reminded them of their Lord and King in the Lord's Supper. Those were things necessary to sustain them as they followed Jesus in a dangerous world. Join me today as we discuss: 1. House churches and households in the first century 2. What a typical household looked like in early Christianity and how the household functioned in society 3. The importance of hospitality in the world of the early church 4. How church structures encourage or discourage community and intimacy 5. The five kinds of gatherings in the ministry of Jesus 6. The five church models we see in 21st Century America 7. Why I am a fan of house churches 8. Practical reasons why I think house churches will become more common in the United States 9. How discipleship and ideology transfer happens best 10.The best book I've ever found that describes what it felt like to be part of a first century church 11.My three non-negotiables for what church has to look like to embody everything we've been talking about in this podcast _______________________ As always, we'd appreciate it if you'd tell others about the podcast. Football United vs Soccer City

Welcome to Episode 21 of the Football United vs Soccer City podcast. Sincere thanks to the many people who have supported this endeavour. 21 episodes into this venture and each episode in my mind is teaching us about who has come before us and reminds us that some parts of the game repeat no matter what era the game is played in. Again it is a privilege to be recording people’s thoughts and it is a privilege to have people listening, thank you! This episode's interviewee has been involved in the game for over 60 years and apart from a couple of seasons at Corrimal as a junior, this man is synonymous with Bellmabi Soccer Club. Robert Banks has vast experience and knowledge of the game in the Illawarra and is still involved to this day.I have met the man many times, have read about him many times and have had people describe his exploits on and off the field. And with all of this in my mind I thought it would be a very good interview. However the 90 minutes I spent with him was far more impressive than what I had envisaged as it was a pleasure listening to his memories, thoughts and responses on his time in the game. Banksy is very humble man and as you will hear he has had a wonderful career (with many milestones) but the continual aspect of our conversation that warmed my heart was the regular occurrence that he meets up with his former club mates, team mates and their partners. So with that in mind let’s get into this interview, please enjoy.

TTOMG was an official selection winner in the New Apple book awards (for excellence in self-publishing) Listen to DW Plato 1-Reviewed By Rabia Tanveer for Readers’ FavoriteIt was the year 1789 when Mo’destee Vert was living happily in her country, Senegambia. She was happily in love and dreaming about getting married to the man of her dreams when strangers speaking a foreign language attacked their village. In just one day she changed from Mo’destee Vert to Modesty Greene, a slave. Being the property of Robert Banks was not easy, but she focused on surviving. She braved every single day without realizing that her descendants would one day seek freedom and actually get it!Trials & Tribulations of Modesty Greene: A Fictional Novel about Harriet Tubman's Historical Legacy by D.W. Plato is a fictional attempt at tracing Harriet Tubman's heritage and how one woman’s bravery led to a woman who would save at least 70 slaves in the future. The narrative is raw, gruesome and emotional at times. The stories of the slaves, the conditions in which they had to live and how they survived despicable masters were sometimes hard to digest. The topic is so sensitive, yet the author has done a wonderful job of not only respecting the characters but dealing very tactfully with the topic. What brought the story alive and made it even more amazing were the voice actors. They lent their voices to the characters and made them come to life. Tishelle Peterson, Nene Nwoko and Machelle Williams deserve all the kudos they can get for their work. The tone and the cadence of their voices added new weight to the story and reflected the characters. Usually, I don’t prefer to explore a novel by listening to the audiobook, but for this one, I would actually highly recommend my fellow readers to get this audiobook because it will be the best listening time you will ever experience. An exceptional piece of literature!-- 2-Reviewed By Kris Moger for Readers’ Favorite"For me, this book was a ‘wow’ from beginning to end” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Trials and Tribulations of Modesty Greene by D. W. Plato is the incredible survival story of a young girl. Modesty Greene is on the brink of adulthood, eagerly planning her future. She can’t wait to take her place in her community as a wife and mother, loving her husband and children, and contributing to the daily life of her village in Africa. But an ominous danger threatens her perfect future and the life of everyone around her. Young men are disappearing from the village - taken by slave traders, people willing to sell their own countrymen for their own gains. Modesty’s journey takes place during the height of the slave trade when the lives of black people mean nothing. Yet, in the midst of this horrible reality, Modesty somehow finds the strength to keep going, even finding love and building a foundation for her granddaughter, Harriet Tubman. In Trials and Tribulations of Modesty Greene, D. W. Plato spares nothing and no one in this fictional portrayal of Harriet Tubman’s family past. This novel swings back and forth from beauty and hope to terror and heartbreaking loss. The characters come alive with an honesty that tears into the heart and soul of the reader, making one face the true horror of slavery. Yet, the author carries hope through, showing the resilience and strength of character it takes to create a better world.Plato’s writing is wonderful, the quality of the audiobook recording is flawless and clear, and the narration of the story is perfect. All three voice actors - Nene Nwoke, Machelle Williams, and Tishelle Peterson - deliver an engaging and convincing portrayal of Plato’s characters. For me, this book was a ‘wow’ from beginning to end.3-Reviewed by Sarah Stuart for Readers' Favorite (Audio Version - see end notes.)Trials & Tribulations of Modesty Greene: A Fictional Novel About Harriet Tubman’s Historical Legacy by D W Plato has settings that sweep from a very third-world country to North America, and the huge cast of characters are equally detailed and vivid. The reader experiences eighteenth-century Africa and how “Little Mo” is captured by slave traders and taken to work for the cruel Maryland plantation owner, Robert Banks, chosen at the request of his spoiled lesbian daughter, Ethel. Modesty Greene is “the massa’s” property – his to force to work by any means, and her body his to rape. How Modesty survives to grow up, marry, and give birth to a dynasty that includes Araminta Ross – Harriet – is an intriguing story.Trials & Tribulations of Modesty Greene: A Fictional Novel About Harriet Tubman’s Historical Legacy opens with Mo’destee Vert, a young Senegambia teenager, in love and happy. Life as she knows it ends when her beloved father fails to prevent villagers being taken as slaves and shipped to America. At first, Modesty Greene, as she is now known, appears to be lucky, befriended by Ethel, Robert Banks’ daughter, but she is hated by her fellow slaves who assume she gets special treatment. A Muslim, she is at prayer when her master first rapes her. In Trials & Tribulations of Modesty Greene, D W Plato has written a worthy tribute to the real Harriet Tubman and I recommend it to everyone interested in history, freedom, women’s rights, or all three.Trials & Tribulations of Modesty Greene: A Fictional Novel About Harriet Tubman’s Historical Legacy by D W Plato lends itself particularly well to audio, perhaps because the author employed three narrators. Tishelle Peterson, Nene Nwoko, and Machelle Williams, did an incredible job bringing Modesty Greene’s story to life. They each sounded so “right” in their part, and none of them had a problem when the character in question happened to be male or a descriptive section. It held my attention one hundred D.W Platowww.dwplato.comAuthor of The Sinners' Club, Glue and Trials & Tribulations of Modesty Greene#DoWhatYouLove #AmWritingCFCD4P893SPAU4WWDUT4U43DJX6UDRRM757L4D7https://audible.com/acx-promo

We, the management of WAGRadio, have always asked one thing of DJZigZag - work with your heart.  Work with your heart, over your brain.  "Don't overthink things", we constantly remind our cardinal host and producer.   It's with that credo in mind that we present the first of possibly two, 2018 Groovin' Blue Christmas shows.  To the keenest observers amongst you, this Groovin' Blue may seem similar to the end-of-season holiday show from last year.  It is the same program.  We implored the Zigmeister to repeat last year's show  - with a modicum of change - acknowledging it, in our opinion, as the pinacle of soulful, artistic Christmas New World African Music programming.  It represents our musical heart at this time of the year.  Luckily, that's how its original presenter / producers - DJZigZag and Sunny 'Sweet Daddy Fonk' Wong - feel about it too. As in years past, we offer you, the prepared listener, the seasonal music we love - without a host.  DJZigZag and Sweet Daddy Fonk will be taking a much-needed break and listening to the harmonies along with you.  We also dedicate the program, as we do every year, to those who find themselves confined, detained, under lock and key.  You are in our thoughts.  We hope the harmonious sounds that so move us - will bring you comfort and joy at this time of the year. The Other 99 - Equipping The Church for Community, Discipleship, and Mission

It's often hard to make a connection between what we do on Sunday and what we do from 9 to 5 the rest of the week. In this episode, Guy sits down with his new cousin-in-law Jay Windham to talk about how to stay connected to your faith at work. We talk about: breaking down the divide between sacred and secular in our lives; Jesus, who lived an extraordinary life, did very ordinary things; Everything Jesus did, from the ordinary to the extraordinary, he did as an act of worship; How we view our work plays a big role on how connected we are to our faith while at work; We often see our work either as unimportant or as our everything; Living out your faith at work means doing your work well; RECOMMENDATION STATION Bethany: God at work by Gene Veith; Guy: Redeeming the Routines by Robert Banks; FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA!! This month, Erik and Kyle talk about a writer who only wrote two stories but they're two of the most beloved among Doctor Who fans. That writer is Robert Banks Stewart who penned "Terror of the Zygons" and "The Seeds of Doom," both from Season 13. It can certainly be said that these stories are quite different from the Gothic Horror pastiches much of the Hinchcliffe era gave us, and actually delve into, in "Seeds"' case anyway, a James Bond-kind of story. Whether both of your intrepid hosts enjoy that kind of story is discussed quite a bit.   Next month, a very special holiday episode...
