Over the next few months, we'll be interspersing some of our own stories among the lay interviews we've been doing. In this episode, David shares his story with us. Lots of people talk about being called to the ministry. Mark Swayze (@markswayze) felt called to ministry at a young age, but his calling has looked very different than most. Initially he thought he needed to go to seminary and get a Masters of Divinity. Now he knows that what he needs, and what we all need if we're going to serve the Lord, is to be mastered by divinity. This was a great conversation, and Mark's story has a lot to teach us about what it means to be called. In this episode, we sit down with Bethany's dad, Scott Barber, to discuss how we as church members can take better care of our pastors and their families. Often, we expect our pastors to do way more than any one person is capable of doing. Scott has sat both with the 1% and the 99%, and he brings a unique perspective to the table on how churches can take better care of pastors and their families.

How can normal church folk do ministry in their community? That's our topic in this episode. After a long period apart, David, Bethany, and Guy come back together this week to record an episode they've been excited about for a while. After catching up on our recent big life changes, we talk about: Guy and Becca's reaction to our adoption episode (#021); We can't lean on our pastors to do all our work for us; Best way for non-pastors to get involved in ministry is to follow the example we see in Acts 6; Laypeople bringing the needs they see to the leadership, then being empowered by the leadership to meet those needs; Some examples we've seen of how this can work; Some first steps we can take towards making this happen in our churches; RECOMMENDATION STATION Guy: Unlikely by Kevin Palau; David: Exploring My Strange Bible podcast Bethany:

We sit down with Bethany's friend Cherri Belew this week to continue our conversation about money and generosity. Cherri is the Connections Pastor at Vinings Church and lives a life marked by extravagant generosity. Icebreaker; Cherri talks about her experiences growing up that formed her generosity; Tithing being about more than just giving 10%; Serving being about going beyond what's in your job description; Stewardship is about how you steward anything you're responsible for, not just money; Biggest misconception about stewardship is that we own our money and our time; Churches aren't the true stewards, people are stewards from the beginning; Saying hello to someone is being generous to them; Showing generosity changes people's hearts; David fangirls; Stewardship and generosity are not formulas to change people's lives; We are called to be generous even if nothing changes in the lives of those we're generous to; True motivation of our generosity is love, not expecting anything in return; Why shouldn't we give to our neighbor the same things we would give to our children; "Why does everything have to be about what we gain from it?" "Some people are so poor that all they have is money." "Each one of us has so much to give. The possibilities are endless." "People who are selfish truly don't love themselves enough." How we can reconcile seemingly extravagant church buildings in cities with homeless populations; Jesus said "the poor will always be with you" so we always need to be looking for ways to be generous to others; Starting our generosity with giving away our extra stuff; Carry cash on you always; Some ideas about how to teach our kids generosity; We can be generous because we know God will take care of our needs; RECOMMENDATION STATION We're so glad to have everyone's favorite segment back. In this episode, we talk about a subject that won't make anyone uncomfortable: your money! Here's what we talk about: ICEBREAKER: What's the stupidest thing you've ever bought? Some paradigm shifts for Christians thinking about money: Money isn't a blessing we get to keep for ourselves, God blesses us so we can bless others with what he's given us; The key thing we need to seek after with money is to be content with what God has given us; Intentionally practice self-deprivation. Do we really need everything we think we need? "Where your treasure is there your heart will be also" can be a positive thing; Budgeting Priorities: Tithing first, Saving second, Paying off debt third, Taxes fourth, living expenses last; Last thoughts: The key is living generously with all of our possessions, not only with our money; RECOMMENDATION STATION We saved recommendation station for the show notes for sake of time. Here's what we're recommending this week: Bethany is recommending her church's current sermon series. It's called Thrive and her church is called Vinings Church. Howdy howdy howdy! In this episode, we wrap up our series on the spiritual disciplines by going back over some insights and aha moments we've had along the way. Here's what we talk about: Sabbath and simplicity challenge update; INSIGHT #1: The disciplines are not ends in themselves - they're means towards growing intimacy with Jesus; INSIGHT #2: Even though the disciplines are not ends in themselves, as Christians, we are expected to do these disciplines (e.g., Jesus doesn't say "if you fast," he says "when you fast"); INSIGHT #3: Awkward or uncomfortability doesn't mean you're not doing the disciplines right; INSIGHT #4: Disciplines are not one-sized-fits-all; INSIGHT #5: While transitioning into another phase of life, it's ok for disciplines to change and mold; SUB-INSIGHT: Faithful obedience is important even when disciplines aren't life-giving in the way we feel like they should be; INSIGHT #6: All the disciplines have a individual and corporate aspect; INSIGHT #7: Individual disciplines does not mean practicing disciplines in isolation; INSIGHT #8: No discipline stands on its own; INSIGHT #9: Small steps with disciplines are better than no steps or extreme steps; THE RETURN OF RECOMMENDATION STATION Bethany: Seedbed Fasting Challenge; Guy: Prodigal Christianity by David Fitch and Geoff Holsclaw; David: Replacing Church podcast; FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA!! In this episode, our tricycle becomes a bicycle which becomes a tricycle again, as Guy leaves us for fun adventures and instead we're joined by Will Rambo, one of the pastors at The Orchard in Tupelo, MS. We interview Will about the disciplines of sabbath and simplicity. Here's what we talk about: Update on Scripture charges n' challenges; Bethany and David talk about how they're not Guy; Will shames Guy about not being there for the episode; Will introduces himself; Sabbath means "to cease"; Sabbath was always intended to reorient us back to God; The value of Sabbath is that it helps us see our identity apart from what we produce; Will explains what Sabbath looks like for him; Sabbath doesn't have to be a 24-hour period on Sunday; Sabbath is finding intentional blocks of time to cease our work and engage in things that reorient us back to God; Will drops "That which you do not do on purpose you will accidentally never do" --- SIDENOTE: it would not have been an authentic interview with Will Rambo if he hadn't said this; We live in a day where the items on our to-do list will never cease, but Sabbath is us making the decision that we will cease in the midst of that; Living to meet the expectations of other people will keep us from truly practicing Sabbath (and it will also wreck us); Will unpacks sanctification for us because he used it in a sentence; Chores and Sabbath; Less is more and doing more is always less; Trying to model a life of simplicity is a fight in our culture; How do we let our life be simpler so we have more time to do more important things; Simplicity for the Church --- at Orchard, looks like not feeling the pressure to provide programs for every individual in every life stage but rather doing a few really important things really well; Simplicity for an individual --- for Will, it looks like not saying yes to everything and also making space for getting up early in the morning for solitude; CHARGES n' CHALLENGES w/ Will Rambo Feasting --- use (and maybe make) meals to enrich Sabbath; Remembering --- intentionally create time in Sabbath to remember God's goodness and faithfulness and love to you; Resting --- not just not doing work. What refreshes you? What enriches your soul? ; Avoid work, avoid things that would isolate you (as much as possible), avoid chores, avoid social media; ADDITIONAL RESOURCES We want to be honest and say that we are not experts in any of these disciplines. Here's what we talk about: Shout out to Michael Acosta Charges n' challenges update on Scripture Corporate worship = Sunday morning worship service Worship by itself is bigger than just the Sunday morning worship service (or even just the music) Worship is a way of life (Romans 12:1) We engage in corporate worship because the Christian life is not a solo journey Bethany and Guy share powerful moments in corporate worship Corporate worship offers a harbor in the tempest of the post-Christian world In the future, corporate worship could also become more focused on fellowship with the Holy Spirit than on light shows and kick drums Corporate worship begins with holy expectancy Corporate worship ends with holy obedience Communion as a means of grace Story from Guy about the power of communion Charges n challenges ADDITIONAL RESOURCES We want to be honest and say that we are not experts in any of these disciplines. We are ecstatic to release an interview we did with JD Walt on fasting. The three of us (David, Bethany, and Guy) are new-ish to fasting, and it seemed like a pretty good idea to bring JD on, as he is the author of a 40-week fasting program over at seedbed.com. Here's what we talk about: Check-in on our silence and solitude challenge; Intro JD and Seedbed; Fasting and the purpose behind it; Jesus expects ALL Christians to fast; Fasting is more than just giving up food; Fasting from things other than food; How do I fast if I have health issues; CHALLENGES AND CHARGES For each episode in our series on the spiritual disciplines, we want to give you some first steps into these disciplines so that they would become more a part of our daily and weekly life. Our challenges and charges this week are: Join the Seedbed Fasting Challenge here ; Fast from one meal this week; BETHANY'S BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO FASTING If you're brand new to fasting, here are some guidelines from everyone's favorite podcast host, Bethany Babar McFarland: Start slow and break slow. "In my experiences, the most important things are starting and stopping gradually rather than drastically. i.e. don't eat a Big Mac as your last meal before a fast and don't go to Golden Corral to reward yourself on a fast well done." Drink lots of water both before and during the fast. Bethany's advice: "Drink more than you think you need." Wean off caffeine beforehand, if necessary. As JD said in the interview, it's completely up to you if you want to keep the coffee IV going or not. But, if you choose to include coffee, Cokes, etc., in the list of things you're fasting from, try weaning off of it before your fast. Consult your doctor if you have any health concerns about fasting. Episode 2 of our series on spiritual disciplines/means of grace/holy habits. In this episode, we discuss the spiritual disciplines of silence and solitude. We're new to these disciplines, but we want to share what we're learning and why they're edifying for your discipleship. We discuss: What we would eat if we could only have one food for the rest of our life; Silence and solitude as ways to counter the hurriedness and business of life in the 21st century; Another reason to practice silence and solitude? Jesus did it #Jesusjuke; Silence, solitude, Elijah, and YHWH; SOME REASONS TO PRACTICE SILENCE AND SOLITUDE: Allows you to listen to God in prayer; Allows you to seek God's will in prayer; Helps you be physically and spiritually and emotionally and every other -ally restored; SOME PRACTICAL WAYS TO PRACTICE SILENCE AND SOLITUDE: Intentionality is key; The point of silence and solitude is not to develop a meditative attitude, it's to actually be silent and solitude-nt (?); Designate a specific time and place for silence and solitude; David talks about "thin places" without mentioning hunting YAYYYY; Make an effort to do silence and solitude daily; Using a centering prayer; Trade off responsibilities with roommate or spouse to be able to practice silence and solitude; YET-TO-BE-NAMED RECOMMENDATION STATION SUBSTITUTE For this series, we will be re-tooling everybody's favorite segment. Rather than offering recommendations of things to read and watch and listen to, we will be recommending/charging/challenging you to practice each episode's discipline in some way, shape, or form. Stay tuned in two weeks for what we decide to name this segment... Guy: Using long car trips (1+ hours) as opportunities for silence and solitude ("Something happens in that 8th hour of silence and solitude that doesn't happen when you're just doing it for 30 minutes" - probably John Mark Comer); Bethany: Using your commute to work as an opportunity for silence and solitude; David: E. Stanley Jones' "listening post" practice and making your whole morning routine a place for silence and solitude; ADDITIONAL RESOURCES We want to be honest and say that we are not experts in any of these disciplines. We can only share what we're learning and what we've experienced. We hope you find what we have to say helpful. In this episode, D., B., and G. start a series on the spiritual disciplines/means of grace/holy habits/whatever your term of choice is. This series could be seen as a continuation of our episode on discipleship (#007), where we said that discipleship starts with being with Jesus and abiding with Jesus. The means of grace are one of the primary ways we abide in Jesus, and thus they are essential to our discipleship. Here's what we talk about: What spiritual disciplines are; Why we're talking about them on this podcast; Renaming them as "means of grace" or "holy habits" to make us more comfortable with them; The history behind means of grace in the Old Testament; The necessity of the correct heart posture in pursuing the means of grace; The means of grace are formational: they are places where God meets us and transforms us more and more into His likeness; The means of grace are also counter-formational: they provide God space to undo all the more destructive ways that the world shapes us RECOMMENDATION STATION David: https://practicingtheway.org/ ; Bethany: Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Donald Whitney; Guy: Fasting from social media; BONUS: Kreg tools and U2 tickets TAKE OUR SURVEY!!! In our first ever interview episode, we talk with Eric George (find him on Twitter at @EricMGeorge), Discipleship Pastor at The Orchard, a church focused on growing deep in the love of Jesus and branching out to others with that love. Having just completed a series on community, discipleship, and mission, we invite Eric into the conversation to share his experience and wisdom about how those three things play out in the small group ministry he heads up at The Orchard. You can't make disciples in isolation." ; Antidote to groups with poor community: sharing your life story with the people in your group instead of just "hiding behind the curriculum"; Good community happens when belonging comes before behaving or believing the right things; RECOMMENDATION STATION Guy: Who's Afraid of Post-Modernism by James K.A. We originally planned to launch a three-part series on the key terms from our tagline – Community, Discipleship, and Mission. After recording our conversation on community, we decided to split it up into two episodes. This episode will be followed by the continuation of that conversation which will be released in two weeks on November 18. In this episode, we discuss the ins and outs of community and why it is vital for our church to reclaim. We discuss: Community in the beginning (Genesis 1 and 2); Community is not something we do well; All the cultural reasons why we don't do community well; Our experiences with lackluster community; What should Biblical community look like? Acts 2:42-47, Hebrews 10:23-25 and some thoughts from John Wesley; Community takes initiative and intentionality; Guy's fear that we're going to turn into the guys from Wall-E; Finding God in nature vs. the real need for community; Carey Nieuwhof article "To Those Done With Church" http://careynieuwhof.com/2015/06/a-response-to-christians-who-are-done-with-church/ Again, tune in again in 2 weeks for the continuation of our conversation on community. We explain that the vision of the podcast is to equip the other 99% of the church (the 1% being pastors and the other 99% being everybody else - you and me) to do the work of the church. Specifically, we're seeking to equip the church in community, discipleship, and mission. Other things we talk about: Highs and lows of the week Christendom and how that affects how we view the church's role in the world What evangelism looks like in a post-Christendom/post-Christian world Topics for future episodes RECOMMENDATION STATION Every week, we'll point you towards some resources or just some things we're excited about this week in a segment we call RECOMMENDATION STATION!!!
