The optimistic Ruby Wang is a Visual Development artist at Skydance Animation. Ruby shares her experience growing-up in Taiwan, absorbing both Japanese and American animation and storytelling. At Flight School Studio she was designing for VR, AR, XR, and MR; and what those different media were like to work on. Ray and Ruby reminisce on their time at Tonko House, and how Dice Tsusumi and Robert Kondo's mentorship changed their art fundamentally. Ruby really gets into the different visas you can have in the USA, the pitfalls therein, and how the shift in our industry as a gig-based economy has made the status of an international worker that much more difficult. Through her preserverance, she has also come to a place where she can work on feature film and children's books like she has always dreamed of. Robert Kondo and Dice Tsutsumi began their animation careers at Pixar, where they worked on films such as Ratatouille, Toy Story 3, and Monsters University. Their ambitions eventually led them to start their own studio - Tonko House - where they could tell their own stories in their own way. The Dam Keeper was the first result. And seriously, if you haven't yet watched it, take 15 minutes and do that now. On this episode, we talk about all things The Dam Keeper and Moom, the importance of music in Tonko House's storytelling, The Dam Keeper Educational Project, and the Totoro Forest Project. We also dive deep into the themes and symbolism of The Dam Keeper, which - even though it's only 15 minutes - is positively rich with messages.
Robert Kondo is known for his work on Ratatouille (2007), Monsters University (2013) and The Dam Keeper (2014). He’s an Art Director working for Pixar, Visual Developer and one of the teachers in Schoolism (See the interview with Bobby Chiu).
