When a girl walking on a Provincetown, Massachusetts beach discovered the decomposing body of a young woman in the summer of 1974, it began an investigation into what would become one of the most notorious cold cases in the state's history. The victim—who would remain unidentified for nearly five decades—and her killer were the source of much speculation, with theories ranging from an extra in Jaws to the victim of the local mob. After decades of mystery, DNA from the remains of “the Lady of the Dunes” was subject to extensive genetic matching and was finally identified as thirty-seven-year-old California resident Ruth Terry. A year later, authorities in Massachusetts announced their main suspect in the murder was Guy Muldavin, Terry's husband at the time of her death. Muldavin died in 2002 and thus couldn't be prosecuted for the crime, so the case was finally closed. Identifying Ruth's killer brought an end to one of the most enduring murder mysteries in Massachusetts, yet identifying the Lady of the Dunes and her killer turned out to the be the beginning of a new mystery. Indeed, investigators soon learned this might not have been Muldavin's first murder, but one of several mysterious disappearances that traced back to him.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAbrams, Norma, and Sidney Kline. 1960. The decades-old mystery surrounding the death of a woman found nearly decapitated in Provincetown has finally been solved. Investigators have officially closed the case of the woman, known for nearly 50 years as the "Lady of the Dunes," after identifying her as Ruth Marie Terry and naming her husband, Guy Muldavin, as the suspect in her murder.    In a significant breakthrough made in October 2022, the FBI positively identified the "Lady of the Dunes" as Ruth Marie Terry. Her body was discovered in a sand dune on July 26, 1974, with her hands cut off and her head nearly severed from her body. The investigators used investigative genealogy to identify Terry, a resident of Tennessee. The FBI revealed that Terry had suffered a blow to the head and was most likely killed several weeks before her body was discovered.    The Massachusetts State Police took over the investigation from Provincetown Police in 1982. Terry's skull, which was kept in police custody and not buried with her other remains, was sent to labs for testing. In 2021, Othram was able to create a DNA profile that eventually led to a positive identification. The Chief Medical Examiner's Office issued Terry's death certificate on April 5.    The investigation then turned to Terry's husband, Guy Muldavin. The couple got married in Reno, Nevada, in either 1973 or 1974, and traveled to Tennessee to visit Terry's family. Muldavin and Terry traveled together in the summer of 1974, but Muldavin returned alone. He indicated to witnesses that Terry had passed away but told her brother that they had a fight during their honeymoon and he had not heard from her again.    The District Attorney's Office revealed that Muldavin was also believed to be the prime suspect in the disappearance of his ex-wife and stepdaughter in Seattle in 1960. Investigators determined that Muldavin was responsible for Terry's death in 1974.    Muldavin, who also went by the names Raoul Guy Rockwell and Guy Muldavin Rockwell, died in 2002. In November 2022, Massachusetts State Police announced they were seeking information about him. Detectives investigated the 1960 disappearance of his wife and stepdaughter and later found human remains in the septic tank of their home. Although Muldavin was arrested for unlawful flight and convicted of grand larceny, he was never charged in relation to the Seattle killings.    A news article dated December 1, 1960, reported that Muldavin was arrested in New York City after the mutilated bodies of Manzanina Mearns and her 18-year-old daughter, Dolores Ann Mearns, were found in the septic tank. The article noted that detectives found dismembered remains and other parts of human tissue. Dolores and Manzanita disappeared on April 1, 1960.    Muldavin was 78 years old when he died.    The resolution of this case brings a measure of closure to a mystery that has perplexed investigators for decades. Although Muldavin was never brought to justice for his crimes, the identification of Ruth Marie Terry and the determination of her killer have finally shed light on the dark events of the past. Send us a Text Message.50 years ago in July 1974, Ruth Marie Terry, the woman who would be known as The Lady of the Dunes for most of that time, was murdered and left in the remote dunes of the Province Lands in Provincetown, Massachusetts on Cape Cod.Longtime listeners of the podcast know of my connection to this case. I wrote a book, Searching for the Lady of the Dunes, which I released in February 2023. I was deeply connected with the Lady of the Dunes documentary produced by Frank Durant. Before that, I grew up with the story of the Lady of the Dunes living on Cape Cod. I could never have imagined being even a peripheral part of the eventual solution to this infamous case.As the 50th anniversary of this event has arrived, I wanted to try to give a crash course in all things Lady of the Dunes. For the last year-plus, I have been giving talks about the case, the documentary, and of course my book. This here is a sort of abridged version of what those who come to my speaking engagements hear. For those who are unfamiliar with this case and my involvement. If you end up wanting more I have several videos I made during my time working on the book, as well as Frank's documentary, all available on my YouTube channel. For more great content become a subscriber on Patreon!Helpful Links from this EpisodeThe Lady of the Dunes.comPurchase My New Book Cape Cod Beyond the Beach! In My Footsteps: A Cape Cod Travel Guide(2nd Edition)Hooked By Kiwi - Etsy.comWear Your Wish.com - Clothing, Accessories, and moreDJ Williams MusicKeeKee's Cape Cod KitchenChristopher Setterlund.comCape Cod Living - Zazzle StoreSubscribe on YouTube!Initial Impressions 2.0 BlogShelter of the Monument Book - Yvonne DeSousa.comThe Lady of the Dunes DocumentaryListen to Episode 153 here Support the Show.

Guilty From The Grave: 1974 Murder Solved The decades-old mystery surrounding the death of a woman found nearly decapitated in Provincetown has finally been solved. Weird Darkness: Stories of the Paranormal, Supernatural, Legends, Lore, Mysterious, Macabre, Unsolved

THE TRUE CASE THIS STORY IS BASED ON: In the summer of 1974, Provincetown, MA, was shaken by the discovery of a woman's body near one of its famous beaches. Nicknamed "The Lady of the Dunes," her identity remained a mystery for nearly fifty years. Police found her with crushed skull, missing hands, and removed teeth, likely to prevent identification. The case sparked numerous theories, including possible connections to a serial killer or a background role in the movie Jaws. Despite exhaustive efforts and multiple exhumations, no definitive leads emerged for decades. In October 2022, the FBI finally identified the Lady of the Dunes as Ruth Marie Terry through investigative genealogy. A year later, authorities named her husband, Guy Rockwell Muldavin, as her killer. Muldavin, who had a history of violence and was suspected in other deaths, had died in 2002, leaving many questions unanswered. The identification of Terry and the resolution of the case brought some closure to a mystery that had haunted the Cape Cod community for decades.SOURCES…Jim Rowley for Unspeakable Crimes (Ranker): https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/33cjkhscMurder Noir music provided by Alibi Music Library. = = = = =(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. She went unnamed for forty-eight years. Ruth Terry apparently had several aliases, as did her husband Guy Rockwell Muldavin. He never reported her missing and he was suspected in a double homicide in Seattle, Washington. Muldavin died in 2002, now the police have been trying to piece his life together. Muldavin also used many aliases, what was going on here? The FBI used genealogical DNA to locate Mrs Terry's family and the identification was made. Ruth was identified as the Lady of the Dunes on Halloween 2022. Today we discuss the vibrant 37 year old, long missed by her beloved family in Tennessee, who never gave up hope.   Dolores, Manzanita and Ruth may not have been the only people ‘Raoul' Guy Rockwell Muldavin (allegedly) brutally murdered.  Anyone who has information about the whereabouts about Muldavin and Terry in 1973 and 1974 are asked to contact Massachusetts State Police at 1-800-KAPTURE.

Episode 97 is a special show.  It kicks off with a second interview with Lady of the Dunes documentary producer Frank Durant.  It was recorded on location in Provincetown, with part of it being recorded from the exact location where the Lady of the Dunes, Ruth Marie Terry, was found in 1974.  The new revelations are discussed, as well as what's next for the documentary and the book. The mood gets a little lighter as Restaurant Storytime makes its return. The fifth installment tells the tale of when simple cleaning goes wrong.  This is another true story pulled from nearly two decades of craziness working in the hospitality industry. We go way Back In the Day to the 1980s and some of the oddest trading cards that have ever been produced. The 80s might not have had a monopoly on weird trading cards but bad movies, copycat cards, singers, television shows, and horrible real-world events are all things you could find on cards in that decade. There's also a brand new Top 5 that shares some of the strangest discontinued breakfast cereals ever.  Strange flavors, strange mascots, it should be no surprise that none of these lasted long. As always there's a new This Week In History and Time Capsule surrounding the last humans to walk on the moon(so far).Helpful Links from this Episode(available through Buzzsprout)Purchase Iconic Hotels and Motels of Cape CodBuy Me A Coffee!Wear Your WishKiwi's Kustoms - EtsyDJ Williams MusicKeeKee's Cape Cod KitchenCape Cod National Seashore Photography Book - Christopher SeufertChristopher Setterlund's YouTube ChannelChristopher Setterlund.comThe In My Footsteps Podcast BlogGoodbye Lady of the Dunes, Goodbye Ruth Marie TerryRuth Marie Terry(Lady of the Dunes) - FBI.govPreorder the Lady of the Dunes documentary!Listen to Episode 96 here.Support the show
