Post-Gazette Pirates insider Noah Hiles briefly discusses the team's 5-1 loss to the Twins in their final spring training contest Monday then gives his key takeaways as the team's opening day roster starts to take shape. Manager Derek Shelton informed reporters Monday morning that Carmen Mlodzinski will start the season as part of the Pirates' starting rotation. Is this just a quick fix in Jared Jones' absence or will Mlodzinski make the jump to being a starter full time? Speaking of Jones, how will his absence affect the team in the short term and — if necessary — the long term? Finally, who has the easiest path to the final roster spots, as six players — Peter Strzelecki, Hunter Stratton, Justin Lawrence, Joey Wentz, Ryan Borucki and Tanner Rainey — vie for three bullpen spots and three players — Jack Suwinski, Ji Hwan Bae and DJ Stewart — compete for the last two position-player spots? Noah answers those questions and more.

Post-Gazette Pirates insider Noah Hiles discusses his key takeaways from the team's split-squad day Monday, which included a 4-2 win over the Twins at LECOM Park in Bradenton, Fla., and a 9-6 loss to the Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Fla. Noah was on site in Bradenton and starts off by discussing Paul Skenes' outing vs. Minnesota. Why did Skenes struggle with his command at times Monday, and is this is a cause for concern? Or just knocking the rust off in spring training? Ke'Bryan Hayes hit a home run for the first time in a game since Aug. 30. How is Hayes managing his injuries, and could we expect an uptick in his power numbers? Plus, Ryan Borucki registered another scoreless outing. What are his chances of making the opening day bullpen? Noah answers those questions and more.

Drew and Kaitlyn project Toronto's roster and inspect positions that still have unanswered questions, including the bullpen's composition, and what to do with Nate Pearson and Ryan Borucki. Though George Springer is optimistically aiming to play "150+ games", the Jays need more centerfield help. Longtime Yankee, Brett Gardner, has been linked to the Jays, is an exchange feasible? Also, the Jose Ramirez chatter is unceasing and Drew has a Ramirez-related theory. Lastly, Drew and Kaitlyn confab about the AL East's competitiveness. A solid series against Tampa Bay gives way to some grappling with a return on today's episode!Ryan Andrews begins by looking at the performances of the Blue Jays' rookie starters during the series against the Rays. Andrews notes the struggles Sean Reid-Foley had in maintaining control of his electric stuff in what will likely be his final start of the season. Contrasting that with Thomas Pannone's steady performance and it becomes clear what the 2019 pecking order is. Andrews also notes that while Pannone had a tough situation mentally on the mound in the third inning, coming through that may serve him well moving forward. The second segment discusses Ryan Borucki's game effort against Blake Snell and details facets where the lefty can improve as he heads into an off-season where he knows he will be an MLB starter. Andrews also shakes their head at Jose Fernandez's series and locks the left in as next year's QEW specialist. In the final segment, Andrews deals with the return of Roberto Osuna and the emotions that are brought up. With performances like this, Andrews defies anyone who tells them that Borucki is not meant to be a fixture of the Blue Jays rotation for the foreseeable future and how important it is for the team to get pieces like Borucki into place. The middle segment looks at the hitting the Blue Jays have gotten, and Andrews has praise for the likes of Rowdy Tellez, Danny Jansen, and yes, Kevin Pillar. The Nova Scotian notes how important it was for the younger bats to generate early runs without the help of the long ball, and how that approach is going to be crucial to the club's success. Jansen gets particular praise for stabilizing a position that has been a black hole offensively for the Blue Jays. The final third looks ahead to tonight's second game against Baltimore, and starter Aaron Sanchez. Andrews stresses the importance of Sanchez continue the trends that they have shown in September, avoiding needless walks and getting back to setting up the fastball the way they did against the Red Sox, and how the Blue Jays will use the rest of the month getting Sanchez back into ace form. There's so many Ryans on today's episode! What are we going to do with all these Ryans?First of all, host Ryan Andrews will start with high praise for Ryan Borucki in the rookie's 6 1/3 inning outing against the Red Sox. Andrews notes how effectively Borucki was using his slider and dealing with a difficult Boston lineup. However, in the second segment, Andrews has to discuss another blown save by Ryan Tepera. With the Texan's usage rate up, the Nova Scotian Ryan discusses how Tepera's value seems worse because of the high-profile nature of his blowups, and discusses a point Cliff Floyd made about the mentality on the mound affecting Tepera's performance. Andrews concludes with an assessment of where Tepera goes from here, against the likes of Danny Barnes and Justin Shafer. The final third is a mixed bag. Andrews shakes their head at the route Kevin Pillar took in creating Steve Pearce's game-changing triple last night and what that error did to multiple Blue Jays on the field. However, Andrews closes with a happy discussion of the double steal that Devon Travis and Jonathan Davis executed in the sixth and what it means for the Blue Jays to have speed that can be used on the basepaths.Follow the podcast on Twitter @LockedOnJays and follow the host @NeoAC18!Subscribe on Google Play and iTunes! This episode is sponsored by Locked on Fantasy Football 24.7, ZipRecruiter and Locked on College.  Learn more about your ad choices.
