Pretty Place - A Giant Cross towers over three hurricane-ravaged states A faith-centered story from Family Life News Pretty Place is a renown open-air church at Cleveland, South Carolina. It was built in 1941. It has created memories for generations of visitors. Last week, the devastating 60-70 mph winds in the remnants of Hurricane Helene hit that area. We've learned how to pronounce some new names, OU's hired a new offensive analyst, Venables had some thoughts on new co-DC Zac Alley, and Venables has improved as a speaker since becoming OU's head coach (9:40). There seems to be quite a bit of mid-year enrollees. Thoughts on David Stone and Jayden Jackson, Venables on a "General Manager", and what about the proposed rules involving comms inside player helmets, and a 2-minute warning (17:35). Venables on the defensive line as a whole, the offensive line, and the TE run (29:40). Did Venables hint at something that may change on special teams? This episode features former blog guest Sam Franklin, a father of two who works part-time as Head of Innovation Consulting in a global tech corporation. I published a write-up of my interview with Sam on International Men's Day 2020, which felt fitting given that his take on work-life balance centred on empowering men to take ownership of how they choose to spend their time, both in and outside work. A vital part of that, he argued, was championing the role that men play in creating true equality with their female counterparts – particularly those with caring responsibilities. At the time of interviewing Sam, he had only recently become a father. Once he started navigating his company's paternity leave policy, he realised that he was the first male employee in his organisation to challenge some of the rules and assumptions around working fathers taking an active childcare role at home. His paternity leave arrangement set a precedent in his corporate employer and he later went on to be offered a promotion, which he accepted only on the condition that it be a part-time role – allowing him to commit to spending one full day a week looking after his daughter. For Sam, this arrangement afforded him a true sense of balance. Now here we are, three years later, and I'm delighted to be hosting Sam on the podcast. His situation has drastically changed since 2020, both in his work and home life. And we get to that during this podcast episode. We also discover what a superpower it is not being a perfectionist, and how Sam's satisfaction with things being "good enough" has enabled him to pack in a remarkably busy career, volunteering commitments and home life. Sam's perspective of balancing work with everything else in life has been brought sharply into focus most recently due to his cancer diagnosis. His experience affords him a perspective that is a sobering reminder of how precious our time is, and how choosing how you spend it really matters. It is a great privilege to share this podcast episode as the final one of 2023, and indeed the final episode of Season 2 of my podcast. Sam Franklin is a partner of Lightfoot Franklin & White, the Birmingham, Alabama litigation boutique he co-founded in 1990. He fell in love with training while playing in college and working as a sports instructor at his local YMCA. Sam Franklin is the VP of Schools for AltSchool, a network of tuition-funded pre-kindergarten through 8th-grade lab schools throughout San Francisco and New York City. Prior to his current job, Sam worked as the Executive Director for the Office of Teacher Effectiveness at Pittsburgh Public Schools. Beginning his teaching career as 6th-grade math and science teacher as an AmeriCorps member, Sam went on to receive his MSPPM from Heinz College in 2007. Utilizing the ideas developed in his systems project, Sam founded the Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy (SciTech), one of the highest overall performing public high schools in the city. Josh – Sam Franklin. Originally a police officer with a wife, house, and the American Dream.  Left the force when he realized how corrupt it was and signed up with Direct Action.  After a long service that cost him his body and some of his memories, he works freelance for anyone who can pay, looking for his wife and his missing time. Matt – Noah Lucas.  A kangaroo uplift egohunter and x-caster who escaped from Earth during the fall.  Now works towards making sure no uplifts are abused or exploited in the same way he was before the end of the world worked in his favor.
