    What's up, basketball enthusiasts? I turned 31 yesterday, and I'm feeling one year wiser! I had some quality time to recharge and reflect, so I thought I'd share a few "beyond the court" thoughts since it's been awhile: Taxes, and how crucial it is to understand tax obligations, especially the differences between an LLC and an S-Corp. Passive income is often misunderstood; the IRS defines and taxes passive income differently. Also, our training income is always considered active business income. Using basketball training to build, not live Recognizing and maximizing the flexibility we have in our business decisions. Taking time to recharge, like I did on my birthday, is essential even though it made me feel guilty initially Overcoming constraints in our business And just to let you all know, I'm opening up spots for consulting to help other trainers avoid the mistakes I've made and succeed in their own businesses. I wanted to share how a series of seven emails, written by a highly competent high school senior intern, generated a couple of thousand dollars for our upcoming league. Some takeaways from this short podcast: Email Campaigns Can Be Profitable The effectiveness of how an email list is used is more important than the size of the list. Segmenting the list and ensuring high deliverability and engagement rates are crucial. Selling through email can increase earnings per hour since the effort to set up emails is minimal compared to the potential revenue generated. Regularly sending out offers helps gauge audience interest and preferences, providing valuable data beyond just generating sales. It's essential to fully utilize the features of email campaign tools to maximize their potential and benefit the business. Finding and mastering tools that can be game-changers for the business, such as CRM, chat widgets, automation tools, and email campaigns, can significantly impact success. Hiring capable and precocious interns, especially those with relevant interests and experiences, can greatly benefit the business.     Hey everyone! I want to share some insights from books like "Essentialism," "Ultimate Sales Machine," and "The Four-Hour Work Week" that I've been exploring. Although I haven't implemented all of these strategies myself, I find the daily questions they suggest to be really valuable for improving time management and productivity. Here are seven questions I think are worth asking. Pick one of these to ask yourself each day: If this was the only thing I accomplished today, would I be satisfied? What will I say no to today? Is this decision a "Heaven YES"? What is the obstacle or constraint holding me back from what's important? If I only had two hours of work this week, what would I focus on? Should I apply the reverse pilot test? Do I need to reset my calendar with a zero-based time budget? These questions help me stay focused and prioritize effectively.     What's up, basketball trainers? This podcast is long overdue, but surely worth sharing. I've been reflecting on some insights from a few books I've listened to, and I want to share my thoughts: First, the quality of the questions we ask can significantly impact our growth. For example, asking "What are my customers doing regardless of me?" can help us understand and ride the waves of demand in our industry. It's crucial to recognize that trends don't last forever, so while we capitalize on them, we should also prepare to transition off them when necessary. Additionally, observing what customers are figuring out on their own can highlight areas for innovation. One standout idea for me is addressing frustrations with the traditional AAU setup by looking at successful foreign models, like the club culture in Europe. I also plan to focus more on why our top 10% of customers buy, as understanding this can enhance our marketing and customer relationships. It's essential to consider the right size for our business to maintain flexibility and avoid unnecessary complications. Lastly, reducing interruptions to foster deep work and considering contrarian thoughts like scaling down ambition to achieve more realistic goals can be beneficial.     What's up, basketball trainers? Today, I'm just giving you an update to maintain consistency and connect with you all. We're currently down 30% in trainees and revenue year over year, which isn't great news. However, we're improving our skills, systems, and team communication, which I'm happy about. We've had some growing pains with our lease relationship, but we're moving forward. If you own your own gym, kudos to you! I haven't experienced those specific challenges, but I understand both sides have their struggles. Right now, our rent is increasing by 50%, and we just moved all our equipment out of the gym. Despite these challenges, I feel a sense of peace and excitement to continue learning and improving. One key thing I've learned is the importance of "hiring" to buy back your time, as Dan Martell suggests. For instance, hiring a high schooler interested in business can help you focus on growth. Big companies spend a lot to identify problems, as defining them is half the solution. Our 30% decrease could be due to factors like inflation, less organic content, or increased competition. This shows the need to execute wisely and develop skills for future opportunities. Communication is a crucial skill in this industry, and I'm working on honing it through various sales and communication resources. For all we know, basketball and business share similarities, like helping customers improve weaknesses. Remember to focus on your strengths and hire for your weaknesses. Lastly, the 10-80-10 principle is essential: start and end with your trainees, but let others handle the bulk of the training so you can focus on other areas. I hope you find this update helpful.     Hey everyone, thanks for tuning in to the podcast. If you're a basketball trainer, I hope you find some valuable insights here. SN: If you're watching online, don't mind the Disney shirt—I'm recording all at once, so yes, it's the same shirt from Monday. I'm really fascinated by Disney from a business perspective because they generate $60 billion a year and their stories resonate with both kids and adults. But today, I'm not here to talk about Disney. Instead, I want to share something unorthodox: my interest in ants. I was observing ants recently and reflecting on Proverbs 6:6-8, which teaches about diligence and preparation. Ants work tirelessly without a boss, stockpiling food for winter. This proverb reminds us to adopt good habits now to avoid laziness and prepare for tougher times ahead. I see a parallel between ants and us. Like ants, we can achieve much more together than alone. This is why I'm keen on finding another basketball training partner with flexible hours—it's like the difference between hunting rabbits and deer. Together, we can accomplish more and handle greater challenges. Preparing now, during the summer, by working hard and smart, ensures we can be at peace during the slower winter months. I've learned that having a strong work ethic and smart strategies is key. Bill Gates once said that lazy people find the most efficient ways to do things, but that's not my approach. I believe in working hard first to work smart later. So, let's build good habits now and be as focused and diligent as an ant colony.     What's up, basketball trainers? In today's quick podcast, I want to share a challenge we're currently facing in our basketball training business, Hoops University. This season is usually peak time for us, with kids out of school, but we're not technically a higher learning institution despite our name. I recently realized, similar to how medical residents learn under supervision, we could adopt a similar model. Instead of focusing solely on marketing and recruiting, our main constraint right now is having enough trainers to meet the demand. The idea is to transition from being owner-operators to just owners, by bringing in people who are eager to continue their basketball education under our guidance. I've been thinking a lot about recruiting and training new trainers. Finding the right teammates can feel like college basketball again with the camaraderie and teamwork. However, it's crucial to ensure they meet our standards and are well-received by parents. Inspired by Dan Martell's "Buy Back Your Time," I'm focusing on hiring to reclaim time, not just grow the business. This involves applying the 10-80-10 rule: handle the first 10%, delegate the middle 80%, and finish the final 10%. This approach allows us to focus on high-value tasks while ensuring our trainees get quality training.     What's up, basketball trainers?In today's episode, I discussed two intriguing topics: the similarities between pickup basketball and running a basketball training business, and a thought experiment about the replaceability of coaches versus trainers. Reflecting on my early morning pickup game, where we lost by two points, I realized how both scenarios involve performing without an audience, emphasizing personal standards over external validation. This mirrors our backend work in training, where we strive to over-deliver despite fatigue or life's challenges. Competing in pickup games is akin to our business approach—focusing on personal goals rather than competing against others, ensuring we provide high-quality training regardless of external pressures. I also delved into the debate of whether it's easier to replace a coach or a trainer. While coaches might seem easier to replace due to their higher teachability and the less rigorous demands of running practices, trainers offer a more specialized skill set and often command higher fees. Parents usually prefer seeing their children play in games, giving AAU organizations a slight advantage. However, the scrutiny and churn rate in AAU teams can be daunting, which is why I moved away from it. Despite these nuances, I believe trainers are harder to replace due to their specialized skills and the high standards we maintain in our training sessions. Our strategy involves prospecting through social media posts, using high-performing posts for Facebook ads to get the best return on investment. Inspired by advice from Coach P and others, I see the value in creating and curating engaging content for our specific audience. This approach, though requiring more time and resources, is proving to be a valuable prelude to running paid ads. Ultimately, our success hinges on our ability to create compelling content, acknowledging that curating ideas from others can enrich our offerings and better serve our audience.     What's up, basketball trainers? Summertime is a busy period for us trainers, and unlike last summer, I'm aiming to work fewer hours while making more money. I believe it's crucial to give 100% to our trainees, even if we want to reduce our workload. Scarcity and urgency are still effective strategies in our business, and although we see some drop-offs due to travel and other sports, there's also an influx of new customers. Right now, we're focusing on reducing expenses while maintaining the same number of clients. I'm revisiting the book "Gym Launch" and applying principles like offering fewer sessions, slightly increasing prices, billing on a 28-day cycle, and changing the teacher-to-athlete ratio. Additionally, I'm looking at where we can cut 20% of our expenses without losing customers, which has been a fascinating exercise. Facebook ads didn't perform well in May, so we're pausing them for June, but Google My Business has been incredibly helpful. I'm also excited to apply strategies from Gary V's new book and get more advice on social media content from Coach P. We're using YouTube more to boost our search engine ranking, which is already number one in our area. The summer season is a peak time for many of us, so it's crucial to maximize our availability. We recently had a mix of trainees coming and going, and we're tracking their behavior closely to use that data for future decisions.     What's up, basketball trainers? Hope y'all had a meaningful Memorial Day weekend! As I get ready to assist with this Nike camp, I wanted to share some thoughts from a recent Instagram conversation with a basketball trainer about what it takes to be successful in basketball training. The answer is quite subjective; it depends on one's definition of success. For some trainers, success means having the flexibility to train a few times a week while keeping most of the profits. Others might own their facilities, managing hefty monthly fees, and love the challenge of a larger operation. Some trainers focus solely on online training and do quite well. Personally, as the owner-operator of Hoops University, I am now more focused on recruiting teammates to help with training sessions rather than trainees or gym space. It's a grind and a hustle, but success varies for everyone based on their business model and goals. What I've learned is that figuring out your business model is crucial. Some trainers integrate training into a team model, while others maintain separate training and team structures. I'll be discussing the pros and cons of these models with another trainer soon, possibly dedicating a full podcast episode to it. Right now, the focus might be on different aspects like prospecting for trainees, finding trainers, or managing Facebook ads. With June's busy season upon us, balancing operational capacity with demand is key. There will always be churn, especially with athletes sticking to AAU teams, but it's all part of the exciting and busy journey of basketball training. It's not just about minimizing costs but also about acquiring high-quality customers who stay longer. I illustrate the complexity of calculating LTV by emphasizing the importance of considering the actual costs to provide a service, rather than a simplified formula of price times the number of purchases. Tracking these numbers has made me realize the potential of focusing on private training clients who pay more and stay longer. The insights from LTV calculations have helped me determine how much to spend on acquiring new customers and how to grow our business efficiently. Despite the numerous factors that affect costs and customer behavior, such as seasonality and changing expenses, the key is to aim for predictability and retention. By continually tracking data and adjusting strategies, we can enhance our business operations and better serve our clients, ultimately aiming for a higher return on investment in our advertising efforts.     Yes, our Facebook accounts (personal and business) got hacked thru the Ad platform. Two problems because of this: - Compared to IG, it's in Facebook where our customers can swipe their cards to pay for our services - We've got a fair amount of leads from Facebook and we're gearing towards ramping up the advertising spins to get more customers But, we're also taking this unfortunate event as a blessing in disguise because: - This gives us the idea to explore more on other marketing strategies such as Google Ads and there's nothing wrong with refocusing back on doing email marketing and other Gorilla marketing tactics which have been proven effective before the internet era - We are reminded to make sure to get email addresses, phone numbers and other contact info from our clients in case we lose access to our social media and other online accounts that we use in marketing our training business - May it be paid advertising or organic ways (flyers, business cards, etc.) to market the business, as long as we see it effective, then why not?
