The 2026 NFL Draft is officially in the books, and the Carolina Panthers came away with a highly talked-about 7-man class. In this episode, we go deep into the tape and the spreadsheets to break down every single selection from Round 1 to Round 7. No surface-level analysis here. For every single player, we look at:• Physical Profiles & Metrics: Height, weight, speed, and advanced college stats.• Scheme Fit & Role: How do they translate into Dave Canales' offensive system and Ejiro Evero's defensive schemes?• Draft Strategy: Did Dan Morgan execute a value masterclass, or did he reach on traits? We break down the flurry of mid-round trades.• The Timeline: Does this class signal a team pushing for immediate relevance, or a methodical rebuild?
Did the Carolina Panthers completely miscalculate the trenches? In this episode, we break down why signing former Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Tershawn "Turk" Wharton to a massive 3-year, $54 million contract might officially go down as the biggest mistake of the Dan Morgan front-office era. While Morgan and Dave Canales have this team on the rise—even securing an NFC South division title—the metrics on Wharton tell a much harsher story. From struggling heavily against the run to ranking near the bottom of Pro Football Focus (PFF) interior defender grades, the analytics simply don't match the heavy price tag. To make matters worse, Wharton's ongoing battle with the injury bug—including a recent major neck surgery that has placed him on the PUP list—leaves a glaring, expensive hole in Ejiro Evero's defense. We look at the hard stats, the catastrophic run-defense liabilities, the pass-rush win rates, and the massive opportunity cost that forced Morgan to pivot and trade up for rookie Lee Hunter in the NFL Draft. Was this the ultimate evaluation blind spot for the Panthers' front office? The Carolina Panthers just made a massive statement in free agency by signing Jaelan Phillips to a 4-year, $120M deal. But is he worth the price tag? In this episode of The Carolina Dad Show, I'm breaking down the 2025 tape to show you why Phillips is the "closer" this defense has been missing since Julius Peppers and Brian Burns. We dive into:The "Ghost Rush": Why Jaelan's bend is a nightmare for NFL tackles. The Double-Team Tax: How Phillips frees up Derrick Brown to become an All-Pro again.Hunting the South: Our outlook on the 2026 NFC South QB landscape, from Michael Penix Jr. to the newly signed Tua Tagovailoa. The 10+ Sack Projection: Why the 73 pressures he logged last year mean a double-digit sack season is a mathematical lock in Ejiro Evero's system. If you're a Panthers fan ready for the "Sack-Tech" era in Charlotte, hit that subscribe button and let's talk about it! The Carolina Panthers are entering a new era under Dan Morgan and Dave Canales, following a 2026 draft that many experts have graded as an A+. In this video, we break down every pick, the high-upside UDFA class, and the projected 53-man depth chart. 2026 Draft Class BreakdownMonroe Freeling (OT, Georgia):Strengths: Elite athleticism for his 6'7” frame, clocking a 4.93s 40-yard dash. His pass-blocking grade jumped to a dominant 86.1 in 2025. Weaknesses: Currently a project as a run blocker (61.3 PFF grade) and needs to add 10-15 pounds of functional mass. Fit: Will compete immediately at Left Tackle with Rasheed Walker while Ikem Ekwonu recovers from injury. Lee Hunter (NT, Texas Tech):Strengths: An "immovable object" in the run game with a massive 84.5 PFF run-defense grade. Weaknesses: Offers limited production as a pass rusher. Fit: The essential anchor for Ejiro Evero's 3-4 base defense at the zero-technique. Chris Brazzell II (WR, Tennessee):Strengths: A legitimate vertical threat with a 6'4" frame and a massive catch radius. Weaknesses: His route tree is currently limited and his production was inconsistent in college. Fit: Projects as a WR3 who can "take the top off" the defense opposite Tetairoa McMillan. Will Lee III (CB, Texas A&M):Strengths: Highly competitive press-man specialist with great length and ball skills. Weaknesses: Lacks elite top-end speed and can be vulnerable to vertical burners. Fit: Adds critical competition to the secondary, likely fitting in as a nickelback or aggressive boundary corner. Sam Hecht (OC, Kansas State):Strengths: Technically sound; allowed zero sacks and zero QB hits across 759 snaps in 2025. Weaknesses: Undersized compared to elite NFL nose tackles. Fit: Expected to push Luke Fortner for the starting center job. Zakee Wheatley (S, Penn State):Strengths: Known as the "Takeaway King" for his range and ability to create turnovers in single-high looks. Weaknesses: His slender build makes him less effective in box run support. Fit: Projected as the starting free safety to help Evero disguise secondary coverages. Jackson Kuwatch (LB, Miami OH):Strengths: High-motor defender with elite tackling production (109 tackles in 2025) and special teams versatility. Weaknesses: Minimal statistical production prior to his breakout senior season. Fit: Core special teams contributor and rotational depth at inside linebacker. Undrafted Free Agents (UDFAs)The Panthers signed 11 UDFAs to bolster competition : Haynes King (QB, Georgia Tech): Developmental dual-threat with $250,000-$300,000 guaranteed. Aaron Hall (DT, Duke) Isaia Glass (OL, Vandrbilt) Isaiah Smith (DE/OLB, SMU) Cam Miller (CB, Rutgers) Jaylin Guilbeau (DB, Texas) DeVonta Smith (CB, Notre Dame) Kobe Prentice (WR, Baylor) Parker Peterson (DT, Wisconsin) Albert Reese IV (OT, Mississippi State) Malick Meiga (WR, Coastal Carolina)
Cody Alexander and Felix Johnson break down the explosive first wave of NFL free agency, including the Rams' secondary overhaul and the high-stakes veteran trades reshaping the league. The episode analyzes the technical "why" behind signings like Maxx Crosby to the Ravens and the shifting quarterback landscape.—In this episode:The Kansas City Chiefs are navigating a defensive hard reset, having lost cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylon Watson to the Rams while shifting toward an under-center run game with the signing of Kenneth Walker.Veteran trades and signings are being used to raise defensive floors, specifically through Maxx Crosby's move to the Ravens and Rashan Gary's joining the Cowboys, to stabilize their interior run defense.A volatile quarterback market has left several teams in “quarterback purgatory”, marked by Malik Willis signing with the Dolphins for three years and the record dead cap hit following Tua Tagovailoa's release.Schematic defensive fixes are a priority for struggling units, as evidenced by the Buccaneers signing Alex Anzalone to address intermediate coverage issues and the Panthers adding Jaelan Phillips to provide a pass rush in Ejiro Evero's system.Teams are positioning themselves for the draft by securing veteran protection, such as the Raiders signing center Tyler Linderbaum to a massive three-year deal to support their future quarterback.—Timestamps:00:00 Introduction & Team Building Philosophy01:22 Chiefs Secondary Exodus: McDuffie & Watson to Rams05:56 Kenneth Walker & the Chiefs' New Offense10:04 Max Crosby Traded to the Ravens14:13 Taron Johnson & the Nickel Market15:35 Cowboys Sign Rashawn Gary: Raising the Floor19:12 Packers/Colts/Jets Defensive Shuffles25:52 Bills Acquire DJ Moore27:56 Texans Trade for David Montgomery31:54 Alex Anzalone to the Bucs36:32 Malik Willis to Miami & Tua's Release40:01 Vikings' Quarterback Purgatory44:32 Raiders Sign Linderbaum45:51 Jalen Phillips to the Panthers49:01 Breece Hall & Franchise Tags54:21 Jim Leonard & the Bills' Defensive Reset55:42 Travis Etienne to the Saints & Closing Thoughts—» Join Felix and Cody each Wednesday as we dive deep into the game we love!MatchQuarters is a reader-supported publication. Have expectations from fans, owners, and GMs like Omar Khan gotten out of control? Will teams like the Steelers, Bills, Ravens, Browns, Raiders, Giants and Dolphins regret their coaching changes? And how intense will competition for coaching candidates like Ejiro Evero, Jeff Hafley, Jesse Minter, Chris Shula, Nate Scheelhaase, Brian Flores, Mike McCarthy and Anthony Weaver become for the Steelers as a result of all the changes? January 16, 2026 - Season 16, Episode 80 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Friday afternoon episode, Alex Kozora and I get right back into discussing everything related to the Pittsburgh Steelers continuing to search for their next head coach. The Steelers have signed several players to Reserve/Future contracts since our last show, so Alex and I make sure to catch listeners up on all of the recent transactions made by the team. The Steelers will reportedly allow all coaches currently under contract with the team to interview for other jobs, so Alex and I discuss that news. We also go over the brief list of current coaches under contract that at least have a small chance of being retained once a new head coach is hired. Three more head coach candidates now have interviews set with the Steelers since our last show so that means Alex and I must discuss Klay Kubiak, Ejiro Evero, and Jeff Hafley being added to the list, which now sits at eight in total. Alex wrote a detailed post on Friday on why Hafley is his favorite choice to be the Steelers new head coach, so we go through a lot of his thoughts on that. We also go over reasons why Hafley might not be the perfect choice to succeed Mike Tomlin. Alex and I talk a little bit about my favorite candidate at this point to be the Steelers new head coach, Chris Shula. We also discuss a few other candidates that might get interviews in the coming days. A few of the candidates have interesting links to certain players, both currently on the Steelers and on other teams, so there are some conversations to be had concerning that topic. With a lot of readers and listeners having questions about Steelers OLB T.J. Watt and whether he might be tradeable this offseason, Alex and I dive into his current contract situation, the financials related to his salary and possible dead money, and the probability related to him being dealt before the 2026 NFL Draft gets underway in late April. Later in this episode the news breaks that special teams coordinator Danny Smith is interviewing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so we make sure to hit on that item. Alex and I then give our picks against the spread for the four NFL Divisional round playoff games that will take place this weekend based on the betting lines provided by show sponsor MyBookie.ag. This 122-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted above and we close things out by answering a few emails we have received from listeners. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. Fair Game w/ Farabaugh – Steelers insider Nick Farabaugh from Penn Live dot com joined the show. Nick thinks it's fair to say that either of the Rams coaches (Chris Shula & Nate Scheelhaase) could end up being the next head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He said they love the Sean McVay tree and people connected to his staff. Nick expects the Steelers to trend toward a younger coach, that hasn't been a head coach yet, and also don't have to have a defensive background. Nick believes the Steelers job is a better one than the Dolphins job, which could be another spot for Shula in this cycle. Nick isn't sure if Scheelhaase is hired this time around, but the Browns are a team to watch if he's not offered by the Steelers. Nick isn't over-the-moon about Ejiro Evero as a Mike Tomlin replacement, but Anthony Weaver is one that hasn't gotten enough love so far. Nick also feels like Robert Saleh should be considered for this job, even though the Steelers have yet to request an interview with him. Would Jesse Minter be a fit in Pittsburgh? Nick isn't fired up over Jeff Hafley, who is interviewing here today. Nick buys into what Art Rooney said the other day – that the Steelers will not go through a full rebuild.
Poni is still coming down from the high he got once we heard the news of Mike Tomlin stepping down after Monday night's loss to the Texans. He said it's fun that we actually get to talk about this and it's not all just a hypothetical this time. Should we be as excited as we are though? The guys talked about people having second thoughts. What would we prefer – previewing a game or having the chance to talk about the next head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers? Are callers ready to tell us to be careful what we wish for? On his weekly Chipped Ham & Football podcast, Brian Batko welcomes fellow Post-Gazette Steelers insider Christopher Carter to break down the latest news surrounding the team's search for Mike Tomlin's successor. Are pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase and defensive coordinator Chris Shula, both from the Rams, names to watch? What importance should we give their connections to the Sean McVay coaching tree? Do those two fit the mold of what Art Rooney II and Omar Khan are looking for organizationally? Brian and Christopher also take a look at some of the other names with whom the Steelers have requested interviews, including Brian Flores, Jesse Minter, Anthony Weaver, Ejiro Evero and Jeff Hafley.
