This episode is a special one for me - I'm sharing my recent conversation with Sara Tasker on her podcast, Entre Nous, all about setting up your business from the heart, and building communities online. If you'd said to me when I first did Sara's Instagram course many years ago that one day I'd be on her show, I wouldn't have believed you! One of the things I feel super passionately about as someone who works with small business owners is that you can build a business that works for you and how your brain and your body work and not just do things cuz you see everyone else around you doing those things. In today's episode, I had an absolutely brilliant chat with Sara Tasker, who you might know online by her business name, Me and Orla. Sara runs a multi-six-figure business while dealing with multiple chronic illnesses, and we chat about how she's really consciously built a business that works around her illnesses and supports her in a way that a 9-5 just wouldn't do. We also chat about a whole bunch of mindset shifts that we've both had to make over the last 10 years. Sara's course, the Insta Retreat was one of the first online courses I ever took, and so I loved hearing about all the various ways that Sara makes money in her business, including through that course and what she is doing to grow her business while honoring the rest that she needs. Whether you have a chronic illness or not, this episode is a must-listen for small business owners. Don't forget to check out Sara online and follow her on Instagram. And while you're at it, come and say hello to me on my Instagram page as well! Can't wait to connect with you. In this episode, I had the pleasure of introducing Sara Tasker, a business coach and renowned expert in content creation and social media. Our discussion revolved around the potential of Substack for therapists as an additional revenue stream. We started by acknowledging the changing landscape of social media and the increasing need for therapists to have a broader platform to share their knowledge and expertise. Mental health services face accessibility issues for many people, and having a wider-reaching platform can help address this problem.Sara Tasker shared her remarkable journey, transitioning from her role in the NHS to becoming a successful Instagram influencer, author, photographer, and now a Substack writer. We delved into the power of authenticity, emotional connection, and storytelling in creating compelling online content. Our exploration of Substack focused on its unique combination of blogging, newsletters, email lists, and community building. We highlighted the advantages it offers therapists, such as the ability to share resources, provide valuable information, and cultivate a global audience. Additionally, we discussed the revenue potential and scalability of Substack, enabling therapists to generate income and reach a larger audience beyond traditional one-on-one sessions. To wrap up the episode, we provided practical steps for therapists to get started on Substack. These included creating an account, exploring existing Substacks for inspiration, and emphasizing the importance of creating valuable content for subscribers. We emphasized the organic growth and human-centred nature of Substack, urging therapists to prioritize meaningful posts over adhering to strict posting schedules.Overall, our conversation shed light on the immense potential of Substack for therapists as a platform for sharing knowledge, connecting with a broader audience, and creating additional revenue streams.Find out more about Sara at www.meandorla.co.ukLet's Keep in Touch Find out more about Therapists Corner - https://www.therapistscorner.co.uk/Follow Sarah Rees:

Welcome to the Wintering Sessions with Katherine May.This week Katherine chats to Sara Tasker, writer, social media expert and coach. While you might expect a full on party-popper celebration of social media from someone like Sara - an expert within the realm, this is a very honest chat which takes many entirely relatable routes and tangents which surely many of us can relate to. Sara and Katherine also connect on matters of the neurotypical and neurodivergent, involving Sara's own ADHD and hyperfocus and how that sews its thread into the fabric of her life and career. In trying to come up with 5-8 books to recommend on this episode, we realized we had way too many and decided to split them up into categories to share over time. Sara Tasker is an award wining multi talented creative behind the instagram account Me & Orla. Sara's work evolved from a photography project she started on Maternity leave and has flourished into a successful layered business encompassing writing, online courses and coaching that works around her health and families needs. Sara conveys her day to day, how a diagnosis late in life has shaped her world and how success in can look different to the patriarchal society's version we are surrounded by.
Sara Tasker is one of the first instagram sensations and her writing , creativity and story telling is honest, beautiful and inspiring. Sara's podcast #hashtagauthentic was the very first podcast I listened to and I have walked many miles dog walking listening to her and gaining inspiration and knowledge. Sara's describes herself as "40% photographer, 40% writer, 30% business coach and 10% cake. I’m also terrible at maths" which really makes me smile. Sarah was awarded runner up for Natwest’s Creative Entrepreneur of the Year Award, and went on to win Content of the Year in the Cosmopolitan Influencer Awards in April 2018. She now runs her own courses to help others learn how to find their own tribe on social media and create a community. Today I’m in conversation with Sara Tasker, who you will undoubtedly know and love as the business and Instagram brain behind Me & Orla and podcast and book Hashtag Authentic. After the release her book last year, Sara went off the grid for months and re-emerged with a brand new programme different to what she’s done before - and I have been dying to know exactly how that came about behind the scenes. So today, Sara and I talk about how she came up with a brand new idea, her process for putting a new programme together, her mindset and approach to business and how she began marketing something different to what she’s known for. We also, of course, touch on Instagram. Here's what I talk about in this episode:Background into SaraPutting together a new projectMarketing something different than what she is known forThe importance of long-form contentMarket research helps us to zone in and create more valuable content for our audienceFor links and resources discussed in the show, see the full show notes.Kayte on InstagramSara on Instagram

Sara Tasker's an Instagram Queen in my opinion - a photographer & writer who turned her hobby into a thriving Instagram business. She has a bestselling book, Hashtag Authentic and a podcast of the same name and she runs workshops and online courses that help people get the most out of Instagram be that for business or to feed their own creativity.Sara's the complete opposite of some of the shallow content/accounts that Instagram has a reputation for sometimes - her account @me_and_orla is writing, photography and storytelling - it's very honest and very, very beautiful. In this interview Sara explains why Instagram is a wonderful place for midlifers - a place to connect and build a community and how to get started so that you really get the most out of this platform.Once you've listened you can sign up for her free newsletter, which is a great place to start, via her website (details below) - from there you can also hear her podcast with fabulous guests and find out about her courses... there's something for everyone there.More about Sara Tasker:. I was thrilled to interview Sara Tasker of Me&Orla for season 6 of the podcast. Sara has been a sort of mentor to me with my business, although we've never met. Reading about Sara's journey as a female entrepreneur establishing her business, then falling down a rabbit hole reading her blogs, opened my eyes to the possibility of being able to run the sort of business I wanted to create online. Something soft, supportive, nourishing and that would support me to lead the kind of life I wanted to lead- something very different to what we're so often told business is or should be. This is the kind of business Sara has created, and it's run in what I would call a feminine way. This is, along with how the Internet has created so many possibilities for female entrepreneurs, is what Sara and I discuss in this episode. To be clear, the way I'm defining feminine and masculine here is not the way we tend to in the West. It's more in line with Eastern philosophies, and the philosophy of Yoga. Feminine and masculine are viewed as energetic qualities, similar to the yin and yang (http://being-change.com/create-shift-s6ep2/) , that both exist within each of us. You don't need to be female to work in a feminine way and vice-versa. It's important to understand this distinction before diving into the episode. As always, thank you for being here and I hope you enjoy listening to Create Shift S6,ep5 with the lovely Sara Tasker. Are you trying to grow your following on Instagram, but things aren't moving as fast as you'd like? Fed up with people telling you to “just post more pictures of yourself” to get more followers? But how do you know if that is actually what your ideal client or customers want to see? Would you love to know what to post on Instagram to REALLY get your clients or customers engaging with you? If so you'll love my latest podcast episode in it, where I share three key strategies that I've used to grow my Instagram followers by over a thousand followers in the last 30 days. I look at three key strategies. What kind of content to share and how I went about making key changes to my Instagram content by creating content that my ideal clients or customers were interested in. I also share how often I'm posting and how to analyse what time you need to post to reach your followers. I also explain how you can get your content shared so that it can go viral and why you shouldn't be afraid to be inspired by other people's content and how to go about sharing other people's content on your Instagram account to increase your following. PLUS why you HAVE to experiment to see what type of content your audience likes and why you shouldn't feel a failure if your content flops. And finally, I talk about hashtags and the strategies you can use to get the Instagram algorithm to show your posts to more people. So if you're looking to grow your Instagram account, you definitely need to listen to this episode. I chat with Sara Tasker about how she grew her business from side-hustle alongside her NHS job and maternity leave to where she is now, with a multi-6-figure business. We also talked about reigniting your creative flame, taking a break from your business and how you get that creative inspiration back after a period of burnout. Our chat this week was inspired by a recent email from Paul Jarvis in which he asked ‘do we have to love what we do?’ Our gut reaction is yes, we want to love our jobs. But how do you sustain that love over time? Franky comes up with an analogy that likens running a business to being in a long-term relationship. As always, Charlie champions prioritising the creative work. We also discuss embracing experimentation, trying new things in your business, and keeping it fresh. We also acknowledge the potentially toxic side of seeking fulfilment in our work and ask whether it might be easier if we didn’t love what we do. If you're struggling to grow your audience on social media, the temptation is to keep trying more and more new marketing strategies. But this can often leave you feeling overwhelmed and overworked. And when you're spreading yourself too thin - you can end up doing lots of things not very well - which can actually stunt your audience growth. If this sounds familiar, you'll love this podcast episode on how to bust through an audience growth plateau. In it, I show you how doing things differently (rather than doing more) can help you kickstart your audience growth. {Click on the player above to listen to the podcast episode and/or read on for a detailed overview. Scroll down to the bottom to read the show notes including all the links mentioned in this episode} 1. Focus on one platform If you're struggling to build your audience on social media, it may be because you're spreading yourself too thin. Focusing on growing your audience on one social media platform means you can go deep on all the features of that platform - and experiment with different strategies - rather than ‘dabbling' with three or four. This doesn't mean you can't post on other social media platforms at all; you can always repurpose some of the content from your main platform. But putting 90% of your efforts into one platform will almost certainly help you grow quicker. For example, the Instagram expert Kat Coroy focuses her social media efforts solely on Instagram - which has allowed her to sell thousands of her online course Instagram Makeover. The LinkedIn expert Helen Pritchard focuses solely on LinkedIn - allowing her to attract hundreds of students to her LinkedIn Bootcamp. Love and London (an online resource for visitors to London) has over 100,000 subscribers to its YouTube channel. But while its founder Jess Dante has a presence on most social media platforms, her key focus is on Instagram - freeing her up to create high quality content and serve her existing clients. 2. Focus on engagement not numbers When you're building an online audience, it's tempting to think it's all about the numbers. Which means focusing on building funnels and automating everything you can, right? Wrong. Numbers are important (the average conversion rate for online sales is just 1-2% which means most people need a much bigger audience than they think). But what you actually need to build is relationships. So if you're focusing on building funnels and automation - over having real conversations with your prospective customers/clients - on social media and in your DMs if necessary - your audience growth will almost certainly plateau. Building your audience is actually about building relationships. And you build this relationship one at a time. 3. Share more personal content People like to do business with people they like. So if you're hiding away behind your laptop - or in your studio - you're missing out on the chance to build relationships with prospective (and existing) customers. This isn't about sharing your personal secrets - or airing your dirty laundry in public. It's about creating connection points when you realise you share common ground with your followers. For example, fashion illustrator Zoe Georgiou, said she decided to join my Build Your Audience membership programme after she came to one of my meet-ups and found me warm and welcoming (not the ‘hard-nosed businesswoman ‘she'd expected). But what nailed it was when I revealed I also hated tomato ketchup. Finding those areas of commonality and creating those ‘that happened to me too' moments can be crucial for building your audience. And as Marsha Shandur points out in our podcast interview on how to use stories to attract your ideal clients, when you're willing to be vulnerable and admit your life isn't perfect, that's when people often feel they can connect with you. 4. ‘Borrow' other peoples' audiences Creating guest content for other peoples' audiences e.g. guest blog posts, guest teaching sessions and virtual summits can be a great way to grow your audience - by tapping into other peoples' audiences. There are pros and cons for each, but for me, by far the best way to do this is through podcast guest interviews. Being a podcast guest is a great way to get in front of your ideal customers/clients - and build your audience - fast. It's much quicker than writing a guest blog post (most podcast interviews last between 30-60 mins) - which means you can potentially do several a week. It's also a great way to build new relationships quicker. There's something about being in someone's earbuds that's much more intimate than the written word. Which means that by the end of a thirty minute interview, people often feel they know, like and trust you enough to visit your website, download your free resources and/or even buy your products/service. And the best thing is, every time you appear on someone else's podcast, you're getting in front of a brand new audience - an audience you haven't had to build yourself. So if you set yourself a target to do three interviews a week, you could potentially build your audience by thousands - in a relatively short space of time. Here's how to pitch yourself as a podcast guest. 5. Show up ‘in person' Hosting a live event can be a great way to connect with your prospective customer/clients. There is something really powerful about meeting someone in person. You can create a much better rapport - and do it faster - than you can online. This doesn't mean you have to put on a large live event. A small meet up can be just as effective. And if that really isn't possible, you can add a personal touch by sending a voicemail or using a tool like Bonjoro. Key takeaway Building an online audience can be tough and it is perfectly normal to hit a plateau. In fact, this can happen at any stage in your business. But if you can swap your a ‘funnel' mindset for a ‘feeling' mindset - using some of the ideas shared in this post - you'll bust through your audience growth plateau quicker. Are you putting off launching an email newsletter because you don't know what to put in it? Or perhaps you started sending an email newsletter...and then hit ‘pause' because you weren't sure if the content was right for your audience? If that sounds familiar, you'll love this podcast on how to create an email newsletter that people actually look forward to receiving. In it, I cover: What to include in your email newsletter How often you should send out your email newsletter The ideal word count for your email newsletter The best layout for your email newsletter How to get people to subscribe to your email newsletter And a whole host of other useful tips and tactics to create a successful email newsletter {Click on the player above to listen to the podcast episode and/or read on for a detailed overview. Scroll down to the bottom to read the show notes including all the links mentioned in this episode} First off, the most important thing you need to know about your email newsletter is that it's not about you. It's about your ideal customers/clients. So - unless you have a Kardashian style audience of people who are fascinated by your daily life - your email newsletter shouldn't be ‘news' about you and your business. It should focus on your ideal customers/clients problems. What is an email newsletter? While this may sound obvious, a lot of people get this wrong. A newsletter is any regular email you send out to your current/prospective clients. It doesn't have to contain pictures or a fancy layout (although it may). It can just be plain text. The key thing is it must add value and help you nurture the relationship. What makes a great email newsletter? Your newsletter is, effectively, a lead magnet i.e. a piece of content you create to attract your ideal customers/clients (or nurture your relationship with existing ones). A great lead magnet solves a specific type of problem for a specific type of customer/client, offers a transformation, gives a quick win and (crucially) leads your subscribers towards a paid product/service. Learn how to create an effective lead magnet for your business. For example, the Instagram expert Sara Tasker has a monthly newsletter where she shares new and interesting Instagram hashtags that will be useful for her audience. I look forward to receiving it because I know I'm going to get some fab new hashtags to try. It solves a problem for me because researching hashtags take time - and is not the most enjoyable job (which is why I look forward to receiving it). So Sara is saving me time on something I don't like doing. She has an online course specifically for Instagram growth, so her email newsletter is perfectly aligned with one of her paid offers. Entrepreneur Marie Forleo sends out a weekly email about her latest Q & A Tuesday YouTube video - which contains valuable tips on business and marketing. These free videos add value and build trust, so when she launches her online marketing programme B-School, people are queuing up ready to buy. Remember an email newsletter isn't just about attracting new customers/clients. It can be about nurturing your relationship with existing ones. I send an email every Friday morning to update my audience about my latest podcast episode. And anyone who buys my Media Diary - an A4 desk that includes key dates and awareness days you can use to plan out your content for the coming year - also gets a monthly email newsletter. This includes additional awareness dates and news of new films, books and TV shows (things we wouldn't necessarily have been aware of when creating the diary) to spark content ideas. Because this email newsletter is adding value, subscribers often email back to thank us for sending it. You Are the Media founder Mark Masters, sends a weekly email (every Thursday at 6am GMT/BST) with news, ideas and inspiration around content marketing and audience growth. Amongst other things, this email helps him nurture his relationship with existing and prospective attendees of his annual You Are The Media live event. I spoke at the event in Bournemouth in June and it was clear this weekly email was instrumental in filling the room at that live event. Pro tip: Remember that solving a problem for your subscribers doesn't necessarily have to be offering tips/advice. Solving a problem for your audience could be making them laugh or giving them something beautiful to read during their coffee break (the very reason I subscribe to Alexandra Franzen's newsletter). Whatever adds value for your audience. How to find out what you should include in your email newsletter? If you already have an email list, ask them what they'd like to hear about. Don't ask them an open question e.g. ‘What would you like me to include in my email newsletter?' If you do this, you're asking them to think really hard - which means it's far less likely they'll reply. Instead, give them three or four ideas you have for your email newsletter content and ask them to choose the one that feels like the best fit for them. This way, they have to do less thinking, which means they're far more likely to reply. Once you've got them in a conversation, you can always ask further questions to find out if they have any ideas of their own (some will volunteer anyway). If you don't have an email list, follow exactly the same process with five to ten of your ideal clients/customers. And/or ask your social media followers. Do remember that the only way you will truly know what your audience want to hear about is by putting content out there and seeing how they respond. This can be scary, but it's the only way to truly find out what kind of content your subscribers really need. How long does your email newsletter need to be? The rather unsatisfactory answer is...as long as it needs to be. I subscribe to some newsletters that are just a few lines long but solve my problems. Others are more in-depth. Make it as a long or short as it needs to be for your audience. Does an email newsletter have to include pictures/or have a fancy layout? If you've got the resources to do it and you think it would work for your audience, go ahead and do it. But plain text is absolutely fine. In fact, there is a lot of research to show plain text emails actually perform better than those with images. And remember an email newsletter doesn't have to be completely text-based. You can share video, audio, infographics, for example. It all comes back to what your audience needs from you. How often should you send out your email newsletter? The rather unsatisfactory answer is: as often as you feel that you need to and probably more often than you think. The key thing is that you're adding value and you're tracking your results and tweaking and adjusting as necessary. For example, Kennedy teaches entertainers to get booked out with clients. He sends a daily email to his followers and makes a paid offer for his membership/events in pretty much every email. It's delivering consistently good results for him. Your email newsletter is only too frequent if it's not delivering results for you. Don't panic if you get a few unsubscribes from your newsletter (or even one or two people who email to say your emails are too frequent for them. What is too frequent for one person is often fine for another). You only need to worry if it's happening regularly. Bonus tip: Always try to provide an opportunity for people to ‘talk back' to you if possible e.g. ‘hit reply and let me know what you think about x or y.' The more conversation you can generate, the more effective your newsletters will be. How do you get people to subscribe to your email newsletter? The key thing to remember is that no one wants to subscribe to a newsletter. Another piece of junk in their inbox that they probably won't open. So don't ask people to subscribe to your newsletter. Instead, sell the value e.g. ‘Sign up for my monthly hashtag newsletter and save yourself tons of time on hashtag research.' or ‘Register for our monthly Media Diary newsletter to get additional awareness days and key dates you can use to help with your content planning.' Here's 39 surprisingly easy ways to get people to join your email list. What kind of email newsletter can you create if you have a product-based business? Many product-based business owners think the only email newsletter they can send is one with discounts/offers. If the only thing you're doing is offering discounts, you'll have no trouble getting people to sign up to your email newsletter. But you may struggle to get people to build the kind of loyalty that results in repeat sales. A more savvy approach can be to think about how people might be using your product. A good example of this is my Media Diary newsletter. Sending a monthly newsletter with additional awareness days and ideas not only adds value, it also reminds people that we exist - so other relevant products go on sale, I'm already top of mind. So don't just send information about your products, send information about how people can use your products (or products like yours). For example, if you sell garden offices, send tips on how to style your garden office, how to keep it warm in winter or cool in summer. This is a practical content for past clients and aspirational content for prospective clients. If people see you as a source of useful information - rather than someone who is trying to sell them stuff all the time - they're far more likely to want to buy from you. If sell homeware and gifts like my client Penelope Hope founder Nadia Newton, you can create seasonal content that helps your subscribers - and helps you make sales. The great thing about a newsletter is that you can make it seasonal. For example, Nadia recently launched a range of beach bags. Creating a summer newsletter than includes a round-up of the most stylish beach accessories of the summer (that includes her beach bags) would be a great way for Nadia to add value and sell more of her beach bags. She could also do similar round-ups for Mothers' Day gifts, Teachers' leaving presents and, of course, Christmas gifts. Bonus tip: Don't be afraid to include competitors' products in your round-ups. While it might sound counter-intuitive, if you position yourself as a helpful person/brand, you'll build loyalty and trust - making people far more likely to buy from you. If you have a product-based business position yourself as an expert in the type of products you sell - rather than someone who sells stuff. That is what will keep your customers coming back to you - time and time again. Should you sell in your email newsletter? Absolutely yes. If it's appropriate, do make offers in your newsletter. But make adding value your number one priority. Lyra McKee - GoFundMe legacy fundraiser Wow…it’s been a while. I’m finally ready to start launching season 2 episodes and I’m really excited to share them with you. We’ll launch season 2 on 27th June which is exactly one year after our first official episode aired, with Mel Wiggins in the guest seat. And, in fact we’re going to launch with two episodes - double the goodness - the first two episodes feature Sara Tasker who started the incredibly popular instagram account meandorla and the podcast hashtag authentic and Daniel Giacopelli the Editor of Courier Magazine which explores the world of modern business and startups. They’re such great conversations and I can’t wait for you to listen to them. I had originally intended to release season 2 much earlier but life just kind of got in the way. As some of you will know I’ve had some quite big personal news…Cassie, my wife, and I have had our first child and we’re totally in love with her. She’s turned our lives upside down and inside out in the most special way. Alongside that I’ve been balancing work, starting a small property company, study and just life in general and the podcast sort of collected dust. But, no more! It’s time to get these conversations out into the world. Alongside all the goodness of the past year, it would be remiss of me not to reflect on the fact that one of season 1 guests, Lyra McKee, is no longer with us. For those who don’t know Lyra was brutally murdered as she was reporting rioting in Derry. Just 2 days before she was shot I was messaging Lyra and we were reflecting on the all too quick passage of time, something that feels even more poignant now. A fundraising page has been set up on gofundme to contribute towards Lyra’s legacy. I’ve already made a donation and would love it if you could consider contributing anything, even a very small amount, to help ensure that Lyra’s message and hope live on. The link is in the bio but you can also just search for ‘GoFundMe Lyra McKee’ and you’ll find it. Thanks for listening and following along - here’s to season 2.

Feeling frustrated with Instagram? That’s not uncommon as we all adjust to frequent changes and the ever-shifting social media landscape. Feeling sad and depressed by Instagram though? That’s not healthy -- time to step away from the ‘gram and get some perspective. In this episode of the Show and Sell with Charlene podcast, we look at signs we’re taking social media too seriously, and the importance of distinguishing between what you can and cannot control. In this episode: Signs you’re taking social media too seriously The importance of distinguishing between what you can and cannot control “Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook and all these platforms, they should only be part of our overall marketing strategy.” “Like many things in life, there are things we can control and things we can’t control about social media.” “If you think of magazines, we understand that the images are Photoshopped, airbrushed, and not representative of necessarily how people are in real life, as well as representing a very strict definition of what's attractive. It's the same with Instagram.” Links mentioned: Instagram expert Sara Tasker of Me and Orla Sara Tasker's new book Hashtag Authentic #MarchMeettheMaker on Instagram #MarchMeettheMaker founder Joanne Hawker Website: www.hicharlene.com twitter.com/charclam/ instagram.com/charclam/ linkedin.com/in/charclam/

About Sara Tasker Sara Tasker is a photographer, writer and creative coach - she is the creator of Me & Orla and an author to the recently released book, Hashtag Authentic. Sara left her NHS day job to turn her internet passion into a business. She travels the world for speaking work, runs a multiple six-figure business and helps other creatives. She was awarded runner up for Natwest’s Creative Entrepreneur of the Year Award, and won Content of the Year in the Cosmopolitan Influencer Awards in April 2018. Sara’s work has been featured in The Guardian, The Independent, Buzzfeed, Stylist Magazine, Mother & Baby and on BBC Radio 4. (You can see more of her writing and press features here.) Her new podcast with @jencarrington went straight to number one in the iTunes business chart and she has just started writing a column for @inthemomentmagazine. Sara lives in rural Yorkshire, England with her husband and daughter, Orla. Episode highlights Sara used to work in pediatric speech therapy for children with Autism and also for a school for children with learning disabilities - nothing to do with current job but at its heart she says it is all about communication. While her former work helped kids have a voice, Instagram helps all of us all have a voice. Sara’s new book is reaching out to a brand new audience - Sara talks about how this is terrifying but she is pushing through to the other side, where the good stuff is waiting for her. #feelthefearanddoitanyway Sara talks about her growth on Instagram. Sara talks about the connection you feel when you meet people from the IG community in real life. No one could easily find Sara on IG, as she wasn’t using her real name so it meant she could be herself more and not worry about being judged. Instagram has given women the opportunity to have a voice. Sara’s theory is that the mainstream press is so negative about social media because they are threatened by all the free content that is put out there. Not a place from concern for the reader but from a jealous boyfriend perspective. Sara discusses how to navigate social media in a conscious way - comes down to boundaries. Knowing how to hit block, unfollow (bringing negative energy), avoiding trolls. Sara advises not to outsource our happiness. Consider what elements of the online community is taking your power away. Power to see what we want to see - see graphic births online now - the power of the consumer. If we were still in the village community you would see women give birth - we want to see it, same applies to breastfeeding. Sara almost missed out on breastfeeding as don't have that village support where someone would just grab you and show you how to latch - the internet is providing this now with You Tube videos. Sara’s favourite IG post - ones that really sparked conversations; one of how was much she earned in the previous year. Money is such a vulnerable topic. The most liked post was Sara’s Christmas tree on her car with beautiful fairy lights. Sara’s tips for finding your passion - what are the things you are super passionate about and what do people need in the world. We still have a Victorian work ethic where work is seen as hard work and painful. There is joy in following your passion. Book Launch: Signing - Manchester, London, Edinburgh, Bristol. Sarah has Podcast guests on the stage with her, which will be recorded. Book deal - publisher approached Sara as they wanted an IG book,. Sara said she did experience self doubt - but she knew that if she didn’t do it, someone else would. It took 18 months to write it. It has now been released. She has started to put her whole self out there. Sara noted that it’s not so bad and the posts that feel the scariest to share often have some magic in there and resonates the most with people. Sara noted that it is a fine line between not wanting to share something because it is private and don't want to share it because I am scared. They feel the same but are very different. Sara said it comes down to how many people are needed to make your business viable. Is 1,000 followers enough so you can engage with all those followers. Then you can answer all the DMs. Just trust the process. Your worth is not linked to the number of followers. People can clean out their followers, if no one has liked your post. Its enough although to have people who want to engage in a different way. Favourite food = Christmas dinner Relevant links Sara’s website is here Sara’s Instagram is here Sara’s twitter is here Sara’s new book Hashtag Authentic is available to buy here. The algorithm gets all the attention, but did you know it’s actually a great time to be a human being on social media? In this episode of the Show and Sell with Charlene podcast, I share my Social Media Best Practices in 2019, including an overview of what changed and what’s new on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and more. In this episode: Social media trends and developments over the past year Why the key to social media success in 2019 is being human What’s currently working and what's no longer working on social media "Real connections and conversations are being encouraged across the different social media platforms. Outdated practices like bots and auto replies are being looked down on." “I don't think that you need to know all the nitty gritty of what all the different platforms are doing and the changes in their algorithms. What's more important is knowing which platforms are right for you and who you're talking to, and who you want to talk to, and creating content for that platform and for those people.” “Posting like a human is actually what the experts advise.” "The platform have matured and evolved, and the social media users have also matured and evolved." "People are being more aware of how they're using social media. They're pickier about who they follow and how they spend their time on their devices and on the different platforms." It's a bit of a different one today as Sas inadvertently gives me an hour of therapy! If you don't know Sas, she is one of the most awesome humans around. I discovered her through Sara Tasker's podcast, Hashtag Authentic and quickly became enamored with her dulcet Kiwi tones and awesome podcast Courage and Spice. She's a self-doubt expert, coach, and mentor for women who want to transcend their self-doubt and cultivate self-belief instead. I can't emphasise enough how incredibly empowering Sas is and tell you gently that you NEED her in your life. I went on one of Sas' retreats Write Yourself Home and it was a real turning point for me in my self-doubt journey. So, in this episode, we discuss something that I'm more than a little preoccupied with - feedback. Good, bad......we are all bombarded with it and especially so when you've chosen a life and career online. This isn't a standard episode because instead of all the normal stuff I reflect on the year that was 2017 and what I want to achieve in 2018 with the podcast, my company Provenance Craft Co. and with my designing under Fay Dashper-Hughes Designs. I have kept the show notes to a minimum and provided all of the links from the bits and bobs that I talked about in the episode. This podcast is sponsored by my online crafting company, Provenance Craft Co. Thanks to everyone who tunes into the podcast whether it is through Stitcher, Podbean, Spotify, iTunes or the YouTube Channel. Your support and engagement are really appreciated and makes running a podcast very special and worthwhile. If you would like to support the podcast, you can do that through Patreon: Clarity I have never done a 'word of the year' before, in part because that isn't something that usually motivates me. On New Year's Day, Matthew and I headed off to have our annual review - we are very business focussed in our household. This involves pitching up at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park with our laptops, eating good local food and going for a walk around the grounds and deciding what we want more and less of in the following year. In the weeks leading to the end of the year, I did A LOT of work on what I want to get out of the podcast, my business and designing in 2018. A couple of days before we headed to Yorkshire, one word was popping up everywhere - CLARITY. So, who am I to ignore something that keeps on presenting itself to me? Clarity is my word for 2018. To me it means the following: 1 - Being clear about what I want from the three elements of my business. 2 - Spending my time wisely/ More doing, less faffing. 3 - Planning what I think is achievable in a year - 12 podcasts, 12 designs, more of my own manufacturing. 4 - Being better at communicating with the crafting community. 5 - Improving my photography skills. 6 - Being creative for the sake of being creative and not always for the end goal of creating patterns or products. 7- Having a colour palette that is attractive to me and works across all three areas of my working life (podcast, online shop and designing) bringing clarity and consistency. This is a massive step forward for me and helps me to understand that not liking rainbows, unicorns and pastels are actually acceptable. You would not believe the hours spent wondering why rainbows and unicorns leave me cold and even irritated at times. By writing all of these things down and talking about them in Episode 25 I feel like I have kicked off the process of approaching 2018 with clarity. I have told you what I am up to and now I feel accountable. That would scare some people, but I am self-employed and work from home, I have no other way of making myself accountable. You are my team. So, to highlight the colour palette things, here are a couple of photos. The first shows a lot of the yarn that I will be designing with this year. The second shows the same yarn with the Autumn colour palette on top. I bought/ received all of these yarns well in advance of gaining any understanding of the colour psychology seasons. Hmmm, I seem to really like the Autumn colour palette... Links to information So, here is what I have been reading, listening to, possibly even taking in through osmosis. Things that have helped me get focussed for 2018 and beyond: 1 - Sara Tasker from 'Me & Orla' has a beautiful instagram account, is a Social Media Influencer and I really like her down to earth approach. 2 - Sara also does the Hashtag Authentic podcast which has been invaluable to me so far and will continue to be this year. 3 - There are a few guests that Sara has had on that have really hit home for me, starting with Fiona Humberstone from The Brand Stylist. The podcast that I linked in number 2 will take you to that interview. Here's the page on the Psychology of Colour. There is just enough detail here to get your teeth into and you can buy Fiona's book if you need to know more. I am an Autumn person. I knew this already but reading this information and looking at the colour palette really helped to cement this for me. 4 - Tara Swiger, is very au fait with the yarn community and helps crafting and other businesses to move to the next level. I haven't delved into lots of Tara's information yet, but I will be. 5 - Jen Carrington also did a great interview on 'The Glorification of Being Busy' which is worth a listen too. 6 - Photography course with Shaw Academy - I am currently doing the free introduction to photography which is online. I have also previously done the online course from Making Light and they currently have a free taster course running. Here are most of my finished objects from 2017. I crocheted and knitted just over 10kg of yarn, most of which was crocheted. I think that is enough for now. In February you will get my normal podcast and less talk of clarity and focus. Welcome to EPISODE 21 aka the SEASON FINALE! That's very American indeed. Sorry. This week I chat to the amazing Sara Tasker, aka Me & Orla all about Instagram, Wordpress hacks and building a loyal tribe online. SUBSCRIBE TO THE PODCAST If you follow me anywhere at all you'll know I adore Sara Tasker. She is an incredible writer, brilliant Instagrammer and a hugely generous human being to boot. Her beautiful lifestyle blog is just that, bloody beautiful, and what she doesn't know about Instagram isn't worth knowing. I did her Instaretreat course earlier this year and totally credit her with transforming my views on how Instagram can interact seamlessly with your business. Far from making me a slave to it, I've found a happy medium where I post for the joy of it while understanding how it can drive sales/traffic too....because it really can. More than anything, Sara helped me find my tribe which is something I want for everyone! We chatted about Wordpress hacks, blogging and, of course, about Instagram. Sara Tasker is a gifted photographer and writer and she mentors other creatives through her ecourses and podcast: Hashtag Authentic. She now has 'The Official Blue Ticks of Validation' on both Instagram and Twitter! In our conversation, Sara shares generously and openly about the realities of 'success' and what she is learning about both her self-doubt and her self-belief.
My first slight podcasting-related drama! I mean, not really. But it was all a little fraught this week as I had a brilliant chat with my lovely friend Giulia then realised I needed to publish the episode today, instead of two months time because I really wanted to promote something that is happening in a couple of weeks!! That meant recording a pre-roll, writing show notes and turning around the edit before uploading it all to my podcast host in less than a week. This actually isn't a big deal at all, except baby. So I did my first ever bit of outsourcing and got a professional podcast producer to edit it. He, amazingly, turned it around in a couple of days which is why it is only slightly delayed in getting to your ears. SUBSCRIBE TO THE PODCAST Giulia was deep in organising the next Creating For Good event, a panel discussion about staying authentic held on the 19th September (with Sara Tasker amongst others!) If you want to come along (and meet me!!) head to the Creating for Good website and secure your ticket by donating £20 to Just Bread London (make sure you follow the instructions here). It's all for such a good cause and, to be honest, even it wasn't I'd want to go along as the evening looks SO much fun! We chatted all about Instagram and how she manages content planning and editing, food styling and photography (there are some FAB tips for you here) and all about why and how Creating for Good started.
