Grow your website's traffic and your company's sales by understanding the nuances behind using affiliate marketing. Brook Schaaf is an industry expert and is breaking down the walls around what affiliate marketing really is. In this episode, you'll learn about the extent of how impactful offering coupons can be, the changing ways that consumers shop, and how to implement affiliate marketing for your company.   Busted Myths: Coupons and rewards sites do add value and merchants should work with them. It's too simple to say that the customer would have bought anyway without the coupon or affiliate marketing program. Affiliate marketing is a huge ecosystem that is more than just coupons and reward programs. Consumer reports and Wirecutter are examples of affiliate marketing in the form of “commerce content”.   Takeaways: Customers today are always on the lookout for deals, especially when shopping online, with 69% of millennials not completing a purchase until after searching for a deal. Coupons have been shown to decrease shopping cart abandonment and raise cart size. The established deal sites, such as Honey or Rakuten, have an immense amount of traffic and many consumers begin their searches there. By working with these sites, your company will have access to that existing traffic. People from all socioeconomic backgrounds love to find deals. For some, it is more need-based, while others find it to be a competitive outlet. For a merchant to begin using affiliate marketing, they need to choose a tracking provider, then hire a program manager, choose the type of affiliates they want to work with, figure out the commission structure, and settle on a discount strategy. Your discount strategy should be more dynamic than a single, evergreen coupon. You can use gift with purchase, credit with purchase, percentage off with a certain cart value, discount a specific product, etc. Get creative and get dynamic with your discounts. For affiliates, the industry around affiliate marketing has evolved over the last decade or two. At first, it relied on some quirky misfits, however, it has become very corporate as the money behind it has grown drastically. More than with any other channel, the merchant can control the terms, level of commission, etc. of an affiliate program.    Quote of the Show: “People play different games for different prizes. You've got to figure out their game and figure out their prize” - Brook Schaaf    Book Recommendations: The City of God by Saint Augustine More Than Words by John Howard Attached by Amir Levine and Rachel S. Kat and Val do a deep dive into one of our three questions. "What is bringing you pleasure?" Our hosts share personal stories about how they learned that they each deserve pleasure and how they have begun to center pleasure in their lives. Pleasure encompasses a myriad of human experiences, from soft clothing on our skin, or a delicious cup of coffee, to 'make out parties' as an adult. Pleasure is a profound way to reconnect with our physical bodies after living in a culture that devalues a mind /body connection. Pleasure provokes greater agency in our lives.  *The information in this podcast is for entertainment purposes only*Find us on Instagram:Kat and Val PodcastVal's offerings:So This is Love ClubReset Yourself for Love ProgramInstagram So This is Love ClubKat's offerings:Fat Liberation Art -Fat Mystic Etsy ShopInstagram Fat_Mystic_ArtAdditional resources/definitions referenced in most episodes:Adrienne Maree Brown Pleasure Activism; The Politics of Feeling GoodCome as You Are: The Surprising New Science That Will Transform Your Sex LifeBook by Emily NagoskiAttached - Book by Amir Levine and Rachel S. The show opens with an introduction to the subject of attachment, which owes its origins to the psychologist John Bowlby who studied the relationship between babies and their mothers, creating the categories of secure, anxious (also known as ambivalent) and avoidant. This subject has more recently been expanded to cover adult relationships, whether romantic, family or friendships, and I take an in-depth look at some of the guidance contained in the marvellous book Attached: Are you Anxious, Avoidant or Secure? How the science of adult attachment can help you find – and keep – love by Dr. Amir Levine and Rachel S. F. Heller, M.A.In the main interview, I talk to Dr Susie Christensen who is a Psychodynamic counsellor based in Brighton & Hove. Susie made a major career change several years ago, moving across from an academic and teaching background – she originally studied English Literature and obtained her PhD in the relationship between modernist literature, neurology, psychoanalysis and psychology in the period 1860-1939 – into the world of therapy, obtaining her qualifications from the University of Brighton. She has also worked as a bereavement volunteer for CRUSE.We discuss the differences between psychodynamic counselling and various other types of 'talk therapies' and the crucial role of the relationship established between the therapist and the client. We also discuss the concept of 'transference'. Susie also has some interesting tidbits about the early work of Sigmund Freud, the 'grandfather' of psychotherapy. We spend some time discussing the notion of 'story', and how that can work in different ways: how individuals in a relationship can unwittingly develop differing stories about the dynamics of that relationship, which can actually lead to them realising too late that they have very different 'takes' on the situation; but also how story can be used in therapy to help the client build a meaningful picture of their past life, particularly if they have 'blanks' that may be the result of trauma. I refer to Rick Hanson's brilliant book Resilient.Susie and I also look at how the body can influence our thoughts, and the notion that the brain in our heads is not necessarily the only 'brain', and how what goes on in our gut and our heart can have a powerful effect on our moods, the mind-body connection, introducing the subject of neuropsychoanalysis. In the last segment of the show, my Relaxation on the Beach meditation focuses on how we can use meditation to free ourselves of unwanted thoughts and allow them to drift away whilst we return to our 'home base' and achieve calm. Bianca works with clients who get "stuck" with ongoing mental or physical symptoms and is passionate about the mind - body connection. In 2011 Bianca developed pelvic pain - diagnosed as vulvodynia, central sensitisation syndrome, and interstitial cystitis. She experienced these symptoms for 2 years, then she stated to develop more widespread fibromyalgia symptoms. This included tingling limbs, aches, numbness, and burning hands. She had exhausted most traditional avenues, until a therapist asked if she had any counselling after being involved in the Christchurch earthquakes. When she started getting earthquake trauma therapy, things became clear that this was the trigger of her symptoms. She started retraining her brain, resolving deeper emotions and her symptoms started to disappear.
