Last episode, Tara put out the call for queer YA books and a reader did the damn thing and delivered. So this week, we start off with a handful of fantastic reader recommendations for the little people in your life. Audiobook listening speeds, sphagnum moss, The Odyssey, and other queer topics are also discussed. Official Recommendations  From Kris: Prime Target (Apple TV+) Kris's official recommendation this week is the TV series Prime Target. A gay mathematician who's disastrously bad at relationships stumbles onto a discovery that puts him in the sights of a shadowy conspiracy. From Tara: If It's Meant to Be by Lily Seabrooke Tara's official recommendation this week is If It's Meant to Be by Lily Seabrooke. It's a "falling for the best friend's sister" romance that's set in a cozy small town. It also has a very fun disastrous lead (sensing a theme, here) who has no idea that everyone around her can see how down bad she is for the love interest. Tara's recommended this author before, but this is her favourite so far. In honor of back-to-school days, Laurie Dreyer, branch manager of Troy Public Library's Lansingburgh branch, selected four non-fiction books and two novels for adult learners to explore different aspects of life. "The Library Book" (Susan Orlean, 2018) covers the 1986 fire that completely destroyed the Los Angeles library as well as the history of libraries. "The Great Money Reset: Change Your Work, Change Your Wealth, Change Your Life" (Jill Schlesinger, 2023) provides financial advice aimed at the post-pandemic shift in many people's priorities. "Secondhand: Travels in the New Global Garage Sale" (Adam Minter, 2019) looks at the global market for used objects and our tendency to "bond" with inanimate objects. "Four Hundred Souls: A Community History of African America, 1619-2019" (Ibrim X. Kendi & Keisha N. Blain, eds., 2021) gathers essays, poetry, and more from 90 African-American writers. Two novels explore women in 19th century America: "The Cherry Robbers" (Sarai Walker, 2022) and "Once and Future Witches" (Ailx E. Harrow, 2020). HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! Today, we're talking haunted house mishaps and embarrassing spooky season stories in general. This episode features one of the funniest miscommunications we've had on the pod in a while, and that's saying something. Then, appropriately, we're talking about some spooky reads including a couple of witch stories (with varying degrees of horror/coziness), and a true-crime-podcast-esque mystery. And don't forget to grab your copy of All This Could Be Different for Libby's November book club! Stay tuned for dates.

Hello, hi! Have you ever finished a book and felt the empty space it leaves behind in your life? Either the writing, the characters, or the plot line contributes so much to your sense of happiness and satisfaction that when you come to the final chapter you just wonder “how am I supposed to go on?”   I don't know any book lover who hasn't experienced this feeling- a general sense of wanting MORE after a book ends. And while book endings are a pretty finite experience (the book is in fact over and no there aren't any extra chapters you ought have missed) today's episode covers a few activities I find myself indulging in to prolong the experience a wonderful book can provide.   Books mentioned:   The only books I have re-read!  The Harry Potter Series - particularly the audiobook read by Jim Dale Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery Little Women by Louisa May Alcott Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese Read Black Girls Must Die Exhausted by Jayne Allen then listen to Episode 22 my interview with Jayne to prolong your love of the book!   You can find my Reading SoundtracksTM on Spotify (I'm Medium Lady there too!): The House in the Cerulean Sea soundtrack The Once and Future Witches soundtrack   You can find the amazing pastry account I mention @pieladybooks. The artist's name is Steph and her account is nothing but pie and book joy. You can always help out the podcast by providing a rating or review, and sharing it with another Medium Lady in your life! Links within this description may be Amazon affiliated, which also gives the podcast a teeny tiny bit of financial help. And with the bi-weekly episode release schedule make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss when the new episodes drop. Hi Witches Join me today to look at getting started with Spirit Work and touching on Psychological Necromancy.Three Questions mentioned on the Psychological Necromancy section - Q1 – Why did it break down and have these matters been resolved?Q2 – What are your needs and can your needs accurately be met by this person? This applies for them with you tooQ3 – Where are these feelings of wanting to get back together coming from? Is it from loneliness, uncertainty for the future or just the unknown or are you in a good place and want to move forward with this person. We will have a separate episode on Necromancy at some point looking at historical rituals and tales! I also read a story of the supernatural from a haunted house that was once located in my local area - this relates to one of our former episodes looking at lore of the land where you live! If you have ever struggled with body image or body shaming, this episode is a must-listen one for you. My guest brings creativity on many levels, and she brings people together in community with her joy and light. Join us to learn more! Katherine McClintic is a choreographer, poet, and founder of the online dance community, Inbox Dance Party. She moved to NYC immediately after high school and now works in TV, film, and theater in NYC and LA. A closet poet until now, Katherine wrote her debut poetry book, Ending the War On My Body. In today's conversation, Katherine discusses body image, her process to become a dancer and choreographer, and she reads a powerful poem from her collection. She is passionate about sharing her journey to body acceptance in a visceral, imaginative way as she previously longed for in art, dance, conversations, and music in her own healing journey to supplement therapy and medical resources. Ending the War On My Body is in production to become a multimedia performance event combining Katherine's choreography and poetry through film, dance, music, and visual art in collaboration with many amazing artists.  Show Highlights: Katherine's obsession with dance and movement that began with her earliest memories How Katherine felt connection through dance, movement, and words more than any other activities How Katherine's reading highlights the prevalence of creativity through the body and expression with words How dancing brings Katherine into the present moment with a joy that is contagious Why choreography began to feel “at home” as it merged with Katherine's love of systems, business knowledge, and sales experience How Inbox Dance Party began during the pandemic as a motivating way to take breaks while working from home–and then she decided to share it to bring joy to others The genesis of Katherine's book of poems about body image–and why she had to write it as a “larger” girl in the dance community How Katherine's poems came from a place or disordered eating and self-loathing into a more healed relationship with her body through therapy Why Katherine's book covers the war with her body, when it began and ended, and the back and forth process of healing What Katherine would say to her younger self about her struggles with body image Katherine reads the title poem from her book, Ending the War On My Body How community has helped Katherine with creative expression  Katherine's advice about getting “unstuck” in the creative process What it means to Katherine to live in her purpose Hear Katherine's answers to rapid-fire questions about helpful advice, grounding habits, favorite hot beverage, last meal on earth, morning routine, an inspiring person, something people might not know, what she's reading, and what's bringing her joy right now.  Resources: Connect with Katherine: http://www.katherinemcclintic.com ( ) http://www.katherinemcclintic.com (www.katherinemcclintic.com) https://katherinemcclintic.com/inbox-dance-party (Inbox Dance Party) andhttps://www.instagram.com/kgmcclintictock/?hl=en ( Instagram) Get Ending the War On My Body byhttp://www.katherinemcclintic.com/book ( Katherine McClintic) Books mentioned by Katherine:  https://amzn.to/37DPcnX (Good Bones by Maggie Smith) https://amzn.to/35ZmFbG (The Carrying by Ada Limón) https://amzn.to/3I9fj2B (The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. **We have a rebroadcast this week.  We will resume all new episodes in Season 6 mid-January.   This week we are getting in the “spirit” of the first Saturday of May; a date that is sacrosanct for many Kentuckians because of the running of the Kentucky Derby. A love of horses and bourbon whiskey are high on the list of things that Kentuckians are proud of and want to export to the rest of the world. Bourbon is big business in our region and has had a surge in popularity over the last decade; around 90 percent of all bourbon is produced here in the Bluegrass State. At no other time of the year is bourbon more popular in Louisville KY than during Derby season. Our guest this week, Brian Haara, is an attorney who developed an interest in bourbon through his work in the industry. He started by writing a bourbon history and law blog and has been featured in bourbon documentaries. His book, Bourbon Justice: How Whiskey Law Shaped America, is a deep dive into the history of bourbon law that goes back almost to the founding of our country and highlights how bourbon cases have affected all types of commercial law, including consumer protections and trademark law. He wanted to tell the stories of how our country and bourbon grew up together. He is also a bourbon connoisseur who gives tasting notes on various bourbons on his blog and throughout the book. He chats with us about how he fell down the literary “Poe” hole as a teen, how Victoria's Secret benefited from bourbon law, and he gives me and Carrie some suggestions of bourbons to buy for the bourbon drinkers in our life; whether they be newbies or long time fans. Websites mentioned-- sippncorn.blogspot.com brianhaara.com Books mentioned-- 1- Bourbon Justice: How Whiskey Law Shaped America by Brian Haara 2- Poe anthology (Edgar Allan Poe) 3- Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury 4- The Hobbit by J. Hi! Thanks for your podcast. I love it! My request is about the country of Turkey. I have never been and don't know when I might get to travel there but I would love to learn about the culture of Turkey. I generally prefer fiction but I'm open to any genre. I have also been enjoying memoirs/biographies lately.  Many thanks! -Sue 2. I just finished the Once and Future Witches and loved it.  I'd be interested in reading more on the Salem witch trials from the feminist perspective...but I would want the non-fiction to feel a lot more like fiction.  -Melissa 3. I'm not sure if what I'm looking for even exists, but I figured it was worth the ask! I unironically adored the X-Files short story collections edited by Jonathan Mayberry. There were three of them (Trust No One, The Truth is Out There, and Secret Agendas.) And I've listened to them over and over again. I'm looking for something, really anything, but preferably short story collections, that scratch that itch of weird, paranormal, urban folklore, and cryptids. (Bonus points if there's a mothman appearance.)   I'm not stuck on traditional America folklore and cryptids, though I do love them, I also love the stories of Indigenous people and other countries and people. I'm not super interested in the government storylines. My favorite stories were: Snowman, Perithicia , Desperately Seeking Mothman, Non Gratum Anus Rodentum, and Loving The Alien.   Please nothing with sexual assault.  Thank you, -Annie 4. Hi Amanda and Jen! So I just finished The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune and omg it was exactly what I needed right now. Normally I am into fantasy/scifi/horror but with everything going on in the world I guess I just needed a literary hug which was The House in the Cerulean Sea did for me. Do you have any read alike recommendations of just some feel good happy books?  Preferably not mainly romance but I would give it a shot if you felt strongly about it. Bonus points for diversity and found family themes.  -Jennifer 5. I have read all of Louise Penny's mysteries, Agatha Christie mysteries and Sherlock Holmes stories..  I like mysteries that feature a competent detective who doesn't have a lot of angst.  Hercule Poirot is a detective that I think fulfills that requirement.  Recent authors that I have liked are Hans Olav Lahlum whose detective is working with a wheelchair bound woman who is brilliant and serves as his advisor, mysteries by John Farrow and Louise Luna.  I have also read all of Tana French, Peter Lovesey, Deborah Crombie and Peter Robinson.  -Ann 6. Hi Amanda and Jenn -  First off, love love love your show! It really has expanded my reading shelves the past year and half, and I am forever thankful to you for introducing me to so many wonderful authors and stories.  That being said, I'm in need of a recommendation. I read The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins last year, and it quickly became a favorite of mine. I finished the book with this feeling of "what did I just read!?", and to this day I still don't know how to articulate it to friends when I tell them they should read it. It's weird and wonderful and complex and I cannot get it out of my brain even after a year of reading it.  When I really think about it, the use of God's/mythology intertwined in everyday life and the impacts on the unsuspecting citizens is what really piqued my interest. But I also loved how random the plot line seemed until all the little strings came together.  I've read American Gods by Neil Gaiman, and it semi-scratched the itch. It was good and I enjoyed it, but I was able to figure out the plot line before the book was finished. My go to genres are obviously fantasy/sci-fi and I love mythology of any kind mixed in. I have Gods of Jade and Shadow queued up in my Kindle to read next (thanks to your recommendations), but I'm really at a loss for what to read to fill the hole in my heart that this oddity of a book left. Any ideas?   Thanks so much! Stay safe during all of this craziness!  -Christina 7. Do you have any recommendations for own voices novels that take place in rainforests (preferably in South America)? I've been enjoying reading books set in the Amazon lately, but everything I find is written by white people from western countries and it feels kind of gross. Nonfiction and fiction are both great, I just really enjoy the setting. Thanks!       P.S. - I know you skip reading praise on the air so I put this at the end but I want to tell you that I love your podcast. It's really expanded the types of books I read and I've found many I enjoy. -Laura Books Discussed My Name is Red by Orham Pamuk, transl. Erdag M Goknar Kedi, dir. This meditation series is loosely inspired by Alix E. Harrow's beautiful novel, The Once & Future Witches. Within this magical novel, she writes of 3 things needed to perform a spell - The Words. The Will. & The Way. We will look at these same elements as tools for our meditation practice. Today's episode is dedicated to the very peculiar kind of will needed for meditation practice. In the book, this will was a “you've got to want it enough” kind of feeling. An inner strength. This same strength is needed to get you to cushion, especially, in the beginning. Your will to meditate is the drive to show up day in and day out, even when it is slow, silly, or boring. We keep showing up and practicing because we trust in what is offered. AND THEN. Then, you gotta let go completely. Once you sit on that cushion, you've got to release all expectation of what your practice is going to feel like. It is here that our will to meditate must transform into the will to let go. Just sit down and breathe. Listen. Be curious. Be kind. Do it again tomorrow. Herein lies the magic. It is May, and with the new month comes a new meditation series! This series was loosely inspired by Alix E. Harrow's beautiful novel, The Once & Future Witches. This book, according to the NPR.org book review: Once upon a time, Alix Harrow wrote about three sisters. Also, suffragists, witching, folklore, flawed alliances, an alternate America, and women's work. She gave this second novel many gifts: charm, grace, and gorgeousness; feral wonder, clear vision, an ardent heart. She gave it history, awareness of injustice and will to survive it. And so it went into the world to seek its fortune, inviting readers to settle in; to sigh with the pleasure of finding a not too this, not too that, just right story. Within this magical novel, she writes of 3 things needed to perform a spell - The Words. The Will. & The Way. This got me thinking… what is needed to truly feel and discover the magic of meditation? Not the baseline “I'm watching my thoughts, and there sure are a lot of them.” kind of meditation. Although that has true value, to be sure. No, I'm talking about the kind of meditation where you feel yourself drop into something wholly different than those curious thoughts in your head. A space? A universe? Something with true color, texture, feeling, maybe words, maybe visions, maybe just truths suddenly known. This is the type of meditation that has you running towards your meditation cushion each day. And we find it through the words we say, a very peculiar type of will, and a way that has been handed down for generations. In today's talk and meditation, we explore the words. What are the words that we say to deepen a meditation practice? It turns out that they aren't just any words, but a vow and commitment we make to support our highest truth. A Sankalpa. Ready to try your hand at magic? Let's meditate. If you enjoyed today's episode, please consider making a one-time or monthly donation to support the growth of this labor of love. Remember in high school or college when you were required to take a certain number of humanities classes? Maybe you groaned or rolled your eyes. But maybe it was the spark that lit an interest in subjects that helped you think critically and creatively. It was in a high school humanities class that Carrie was introduced to and fell in love with E. M. Forster's novel A Room With a View. For me, an introduction to art history in college opened a whole new world and made me want to travel and see the cultures portrayed in the artwork I learned about. The exposure to subjects like literature, history, philosophy, culture, and religion help us understand the world we live in. In our state, the organization that promotes the humanities is Kentucky Humanities; a non-profit that is an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington, DC. It offers lots of cool programs, many of which are focused on books and bringing discussions about them to the Kentucky public at large. This nonprofit serves as the state cheerleader of Kentucky writers' literary endeavors and one way it does this is through the Kentucky Book Festival which takes place every November. However, there are Book Festival programs that happen all year long including book bundles subscriptions, The Kentucky Reads program, and the School Days initiative that brings children's book authors into schools to dazzle young readers and put books they can keep into their hands. All of these programs highlight Kentucky authors and put a spotlight on the rich literary talent we have within our border. This week we talk with Sara Woods, the Kentucky Book Festival director. She brought her experience working with the Western Kentucky University sponsored Southern Kentucky Book Festival to her new position and from there brainstormed some fresh ideas about how to bring books to people even when, especially during Covid, people can't come to the books. Sara tells us how her love for her American Girl Doll as a child sparked her excitement for reading, how she is using the talents of a tattoo artist to highlight one of the books in the book bundle subscription service, and where you can get ice cream and beer on a bike trail to vastly increase the fun factor. Books Mentioned in this Episode: 1- American Doll book sets (Felicity) 2- Illustrated classics (Moby Dick, Great Expectations) 3- The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien 4- Essays by Michel de Montaigne 5- Clay's Quilt by Silas House 6- Just a Few Miles South by Ouita Michel 7- Kill All Your Darlings by David Bell 8- Perfect Black by Crystal Wilkinson 9- All the King's Men by Robert Penn Warren 10- Hannah Coulter by Wendell Berry 11- Birds of Opulence by Crystal Wilkinson 12- Duncan the Story Dragon by Amanda Driscoll 13- Haggis and Tank Unleashed: Digging for Dinos by Jessica Young 14- Nat Turner's Rebellion by Shawn Pryor 15- The Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo 16- The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand 17- The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix Harrow 18- Once and Future Witches by Alix Harrow 19- Bunny by Mona Awad 20- The Secret History by Donna Tartt 21- The Vine that Ate the South by J. 2020 has been one for the books, hasn't it. See my pun there? A worldwide pandemic, a truly historic election, racial unrest, murder hornets, shortages of toilet paper, and massive fires in California are just a few weird things that happened this year; we all took solace where we could. For book lovers like us, it usually meant a book but could also include new hobbies like puzzles and baking for me, crocheting for Carrie, and wine for the both of us. For this last episode of 2020, Carrie and I decided to talk about some notable books that we didn't have a chance to talk about during the year and also take a look forward to 2021 to some books we are anxious to read. Technology has really been messing with us at the end of 2020. Several pieces we recorded didn't work, or disappeared, or just plain sucked. Anything that could go wrong did. So we had to get creative with this episode. And like many things about 2020, that creativity to do something different sometimes makes something better. I hope in this case this episode is better than the one we started with before the gremlins inside our computer got a hold of it. We will be taking a few weeks off. While we are gone, we will re-play some older episodes that we think deserve another listen. Then we will be back January 13 with all new episodes with cool interesting people who are book lovers too. Books mentioned-- 1- A Polar Affair: Antartica's Forgotten Hero and the Secret Love Lives of Penguins by Lloyd Spencer Davis 2- Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley 3- Nothing is Wrong and Here is Why by Alexandra Petri 4- Shirley: A Novel by Susan Scarf Merrell / The Lottery and Other Stories by Shirley Jackson 5- The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill 6- The Third Rainbow Girl: The Long Life of a Double Murder in Appalachia by Emma Copley Eisenberg 7- Boom by Mark Haddon 8- Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward 9- The One and Only Ivan /The One and Only Bob by Katherine Applegate 10- Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds 11- Sick Souls, Healthy Minds: How William James Can Save Your Life by John Kaag 12- Sharks in the Time of Saviors by Kawai Strong Washburn 13- Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell 14- Eat a Peach by David Chang 15- Once and Future Witches by Alix Harrow 16- The Book of Eels: Our Enduring Fascination with the Most Mysterious Creature in the Natural World by Patrik Svensson 17- The Stone Sky (Brokem Earth #3) by NK Jemisin 18- This Close to OK by Leesa Cross-Smith 19- The Whisper Man by Alex North 20- Murmur of Bees by Sophia Segovia 21- Lakewood by Megan Giddings Perks Guests' Recommendations-- 1- Brave(ish): A Memoir of a Recovering Perfectionist by Margaret Davis Ghielmetti (Anita Martin recommends) 2- The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune (Diane Neu recommends) 3- Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron (Tamika recommends) 4- Maurice by EM Forster (Tabby Pawlitzki recommends) 5- The Never Game by Jeffery Dever (Robin Weiss recommends) 6- Dash and Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan (Mindy Jett recommends) 7- Protection Spell by Jennifer Givhan (Robert Eric Shoemaker recommends) 8- Writers and Lovers by Lily King (Ellen Birkett Morris recommends) 9- The Dutch House by Ann Patchett (Anne Baker recommends) 10- Winter's Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher (Niamh Lutes recommends) 11- Untamed by Glennon Doyle (Katy Yocom recommends) 12- The Midnight Library by Matt Haig (Tricia Taylor recommends) 13- The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo (Jennie Mulhall recommends) 14- This is How it Always Is by Laurie Frankel (Kim Vidrine recommends) 15- The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett (Holly Mcarthur recommends) 16- Winter Loon by Susan Bernhard (Bobi Conn recommends) 17- It All Comes Back to You by Beth Duke (Kim Esposito recommends) 18- Children of Blood and Bone by Toni Adeyemi (Deedee Cummings recommends) 19- World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatathil (Amy Miller recommends) 20- The Ice Storm by Rick Moody (Andrew Shaffer recommends)

It isn't unusual for shops to begin playing Jingle Bell Rock or Baby, It's Cold Outside about a minute after summer ends, which shoppers either love or abhor. 2020 has been weird in numerous ways, and shopping for the winter holidays, whether it is Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Christmas, is going to prove to be unusual. Our little goblins and ghouls may still be counting their candy from Halloween and Thanksgiving is still several weeks away but small businesses including bookstores are encouraging shoppers to start grabbing those gifts early this year for multiple reasons. So today we talk to our favorite bookseller, Sam Miller of Carmichael Books in Louisville, about what books and gifts readers may want to check out this holiday season. Sam tells us why independent bookstores across the country called October the new December, which new books will be hot this holiday season and what books that came out earlier in 2020 have had staying power. Finally Sam gives some suggestions to shoppers about what they can do, in addition to buying their gifts from local businesses, to help stores financially through this weird weird year to still keep their doors open in 2021. The Once and Future Witches is a tale of stories , witches and sisters, justice and womens right to vote in 1893. We follow the Eastwood sisters--James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna as they join the suffragists of New Salem. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote-and perhaps not even to live-the sisters will need to delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances, and heal the bond between them if they want to survive. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/support

Travis interviews fantasy author Alix E. Harrow about The Once and Future Witches, her latest novel from Redhook. One of the great things about being a speculative fiction fan in the last couple of decades is the ability to discuss any book, game, movie, etc. you can possibly imagine online. Social media lets us have the geeky conversations online that we may not be able to have in other areas of our lives. So, how do we usually use bookish social media as fans? What type of content do we want to see from writers, publishers, and artists? And what are some of the unspoken rules for interacting in online SFF circles?
