Championed over the years by the likes of Americana superstar Scott Avett and music mogul Seymour Stein, the music of Clem Snide mainstay Eef Barzelay has become an optimistic, yet matter-of-fact touchstone in a weary world, whether crafting his own musings or covering the inspirational hits of Journey. NPR dubs him "the most underrated songwriter in the business today, with a sneakily firm grasp on poignancy and humor," and while Eef's evocative tone is of a similar caliber to Jeff Mangum or John Darnielle, his sentimental and visual lyricism puts him in a unique category. On this week's program, Eef discusses embracing the unknown, diving back into vinyl with his adult son, and the quandary of carrying on the Clem Snide moniker. Plus, a run-in with a New Jersey state trooper while shooting the album cover for 1999's Your Favorite Music. Eef hits the road later this month; tour dates and tickets are available at clemsni.de. His latest album Oh Smokey is available digitally, or on vinyl from foreignleisure.com. Follow @clemsnidemusic on Instagram.
The show opens with Bianna Golodryga speaking to David Scheffer, former U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues, about the legal implications of the International Criminal Court's unprecedented arrest warrants for Israeli leaders over alleged war crimes. Plus, Bianna interviews Dan Osborn, a union steamfitter and former Senate candidate from Nebraska on why working-class Americans abandoned democrats, and how to get more of them elected to government . Then, Christiane discusses the adaptation of Say Nothing to a hit series on Hulu and Disney Plus with author Patrick Radden Keefe, exploring the dark history of “The Troubles” of Northern Ireland. Afterwards, Bel Trew of The Independent joins the show to discuss the many restrictions on abortion rights showcased in her documentary The A Word. Later, Bianna talks to Seth and Scott Avett of The Avett Brothers and John Gallagher Jr. about their Broadway musical Swept Away. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Scott Avett is a visual artist, musician, and songwriter. No amount of descriptors quite do him justice. Scott's work was met by my ears before my eyes. His songs slip into the ear stream, reverberate off the rib cage and remind the heart it was born free. Scott's paintings hold your gaze in absorption, jostle you awake, and drop you off a block later. In our conversation today Scott and I talk about creativity and contemplation, mysterious inputs that need to be absence of the thought of outputs, the study of sacred texts, parenting and death, and much more. Listen to the new song "Stars on the Ceiling" by Stealing Oceans Feat. Scott Avett of The Avett Brothers as we talk to Brian Thompson, the mastermind behind Stealing Oceans. He is also one of the masterminds behind brewing this blueberry beer with Shipyard Brewing Company that is based on a beer study by a German scientist about how music can change the composition of the beer as well as enhance the taste of the beer while listening to certain music. We and Total Wine & More loved the concept, so we drank it and Total Wines is selling it in all 250 stores. Shout out to Brian from #StealingOceans and his team for providing the beer, the music, and all of the good times.
Scott Avett, joins me to discuss the influences behind his love of art, music and sports. We also touch on how he stays creative when he's not on stage.
The Avett Brother are an American folk rock band from Concord, North Carolina. made up of two brothers, Scott Avett and Seth Avett along with Bob Crawford and Joe Kwon. Formed from Seth and Scott's former rock band Nemo, The Avett Brothers combine bluegrass, country, punk, pop melodies, folk, rock and roll, indie rock, honky-tonk, and ragtime to produce a novel sound described by the San Francisco Chronicle as having the "heavy sadness of Townes Van Zandt, the light pop concision of Buddy Holly, the tuneful jangle of the Beatles, the raw energy of the Ramones." As of this recording the Avett Brothers have released 10 studio albums, 4 live albums, and 5 extended plays. On today's show special guest Dixie V. Combs and I will search through their entire catalog and rank our 10 favorite songs. So, if I get murdered in the city, don't go revenging in my name. In episode 25, I gained the ear of Mike Marsh. Mike is a drummer and a producer the currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee. Mike has been the drummer for The Avett Brothers since 2012. Mike grew up in Florida, raised by his brother, and started playing the drums in middle school. Through the support of Mike's brother and mother, he was able to follow his passion and become a touring musician. In his late teens, he was in a Boca Raton punk band, The Agency. However, one of his bandmates, Chris Carrabba, started a new band and asked Mike to join. Mike remained the drummer for Dashboard Confessional for over a decade and discussed some of the ups and downs of the band. Mike also discusses his entry into The Avett Brothers and producing his most recent album in Papermill Studios. Crystal and I discuss Sunny Day Real Estate, MTV late-night programs, a little Avett Brothers, and going down in a blaze of glory in this week's wrap-up. Please enjoy my fast-paced and meandering conversation with Mr. Mike Marsh.

Scott Avett grew up in a musical household in rural North Carolina. He is a founding member of the Grammy Award®-nominated band, The Avett Brothers. The band tours constantly, selling out arenas around the world. They've recorded multiple records with legendary producer, Rick Rubin, who MTV called the most important producer of the last 20 years. Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio co-directed a documentary called "May It Last" that followed the band as they wrote their Grammy-nominated album, "True Sadness." Coming next year is "Swept Away" - a musical inspired by and featuring the music of The Avett Brothers. Beyond Scott's work as a musician, he is also an accomplished visual artist. His paintings and prints have been featured in coveted galleries. He describes his art as figurative work about spirituality and family/human relationships. Avett resides in North Carolina with his wife and three children. theavettbrothers.com
In this week's interview, I sit down with Paul Defiglia. Paul is currently the owner and operator of the Daylight Recording Studio located in Nashville. Tennessee. Previously, Paul was the bass player for Langhorne Slim and The War Eagles. Next, he temporarily stood in as the Avett Brothers' bass player before landing a full-time position on the keys, touring for several years. In 2020-2021, Paul played bass on and co-produced Langhorne Slim's, "Strawberry Mansion" and produced his first full-length solo album, "In Daylight." In part two of this two-part episode, we discuss Paul's journey from his time as a junior high trumpet player, his transition to bass, attending UNC's high school college conservatory, and eventually traveling to NYU to study bass in the Tisch School of the Arts. After college, Paul toured with Langhorne Slim for over four years before taking a break from music. Sometime after, Paul received a call to sub for Bob Crawford as the touring bass player for The Avett Brothers. This part-time job eventually leads to Paul's somewhat serendipitous metamorphosis into the Avett Brothers' full-time touring keys player, amazingly "learning" how to play the keys in front of sold-out shows across the country as he toured with The Avett Brothers. Please enjoy part two of my discussion with Paul DeFiglia.

Music podcast hosted by brothers, Chris and Cam Willis based on a simple thesis that there are only two categories of songs; love songs and fight songs. Chris and Cam test this thesis against songs you've definitely heard and some you probably haven't. Sometimes they agree, sometimes they don't. Often times they surprise themselves. You won't find two brothers that love music or each other more than these two. Come for the music, stay for the family and friendship. This week the guys talk about the lovely song,"Tell the Truth" by The Avett Brothers from their 2019 album, "Closer than Together". The guys can't help but get into meeting Scott Avett at his art gallery opening in Raleigh North Carolina, https://ncartmuseum.org/exhibitions/view/39556 , and how much they love this band.Follow the guys on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/camwillis/ https://www.instagram.com/christophermwillis/And find the playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/user/cdwblink?si=fNpVyooDTEaXipOdSfjKdQ

About a month ago, I sat down with my friend Tim Mossberger in Champaign, Illinois to talk about our mutual favorite band, The Avett Brothers, and a bunch of their songs that deal with topics related to mortality. Tim has a website called As My Life Turns to a Song – The Avett Brothers Archive. He has been methodically collecting and documenting the history of the band, and together with Paul Oehler has created an Avett setlist database that is as comprehensive as possible. And with me, Tim has created Tales of Avett News, a blog where we publish concert reviews, interviews with Avett fans and people connected with the band, and other content of interest to Avett fans. In this episode, Tim and I discuss a number of Avett Brothers songs that deal with various aspects of mortality including: The Fall Talk on Indolence The Lowering Die Die Die Another Youngster Am I Born to Die (cover) Live and Die Life Through My Prayers Once and Future Carpenter Morning Song Murder in the City No Hard Feelings
Jason Molina is one of the most capable, compelling, and confounding musicians of the last quarter century. We're celebrating his life and work as we mark five years since his passing in the spring of 2013. To do so, you'll hear from "Jason Molina: Riding With the Ghost" author Erin Osmon, Jim James, Scott Avett, Strand of Oaks frontman Tim Showalter, and Secretly Canadian Records co-founder Ben Swanson.
In the lucky 13th episode of the Road to Now, Bob and Ben sit down with the multi-talented Scott Avett to talk about the influences, events, and family history that led him to his life as an artist. Scott is a founding member of the award-winning band The Avett Brothers, which he established more than a decade and a half ago along with his brother Seth, and Road to Now host Bob Crawford. Scott is also an accomplished painter whose art has been shown across the United States. The hosts of the Road to Now have a long-established friendship with the guest, and both Bob and Ben agree that Scott's personal history and worldview are remarkable. We therefore hope you will enjoy what is not only a fascinating interview, but a convergence of three individuals whose lives have roots that span most of their adult lives. Recorded Wednesday, July 20th, 2016 in Portland, Oregon. More on this episode and others can be found at: www.theroadtonow.com
Everyone is in on the October MMMPod. It all starts with a spooky song from First Aid Kit, who are a pair of sisters from Sweden. Then Scott Avett speaks about singing with his sibling Seth in the Avett Brothers. After that, Hamilton Leithauser from The Walkmen asks Scott Avett a question. Craig Finn from the Hold Steady talks about a future episode of “Glee” based at Boston College where a Hold Steady song would be a perfect match. 3D from Massive Attack talks about his band’s AntiShrug™ show and we play a live cut from Ghostface Killah to bring it all back to that Halloween-y feel.* Oh yeah, and Sheryl Crow suffers through the new Moment of Truth segment!*= Yes, the MMMPod administrators acknowledge that the name Ghostface Killah has very little to do with All Hallow’s Eve, and that it means something else entirely. Just go with us on this one!
