Show Notes Our guest today is Rich Lewis—an author, speaker, and personal coach who focuses on centering prayer as a means for inner transformation. Rich's newest book is titled, Sitting with God: A Journey to Your True Self through Centering Prayer. In preparing for this show, it occurred to me that many of us know very little about Centering Prayer, although it is a widely used vehicle for fostering a deeper Contemplative Life. Let's see what Rich has to teach us today regarding Centering Prayer and the Contemplative Life. LINKS Check out the Rich Lewis website HERE. You will also want to look at his latest book, Sitting with God: A Journey to Your True Self through Centering Prayer.
Send us a textThis week, Jonathan and Ryan discuss two early medieval selections from Richard M. Gamble's The Great Tradition, one taken from Gregory the Great, perhaps the most significant pope in the history of Christendom, and another from Alcuin of York, adviser to Charlemagne and architect of the Carolingian Renaissance. Both Gregory and Alcuin were churchmen, statesmen, scholars, and are linked closely to the Christianization of Britain. Jonathan and Ryan discuss the relation between rational thought and proper grammar, the Great Books according to Medievals, and whether education properly belongs to the contemplative life or the active life.Richard M. In this episode we had the pleasure to speak with Ven. Clementia Will, nun within the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives - one of the member organization within the European Buddhist Union. The leading question for our question was: What does it mean to lead a Contemplative Life? The Order of Buddhist Contemplatives (OBC) consists of female and male ordained monks – as well as lay ministers. The Order is active in the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and Latvia. In addition to two large monasteries in the US and England, and to the many temples and priories that have been founded, many meditation groups and lay communities have also formed over the decades. The male and female monks in the order are fully equal, and are recognized equally. All have taken celibacy vows, and most of them live together in mixed monastic communities, either in our two large monasteries or in the smaller temples. The heart and foundation of the practice is Serene Reflection Meditation. A very important aspect of the training is also the effort to keep and act in accord with the Buddhist Precepts. At the very core of the teaching and practice in this tradition is the recognition that all beings possess Buddha-Nature, which gives rise to thinking and acting with compassion, to selfless giving, and to gratitude. https://obcon.org

Sometimes the words fly out of our mouth too fast, or we hit the send button too soon. Our desire to have a good relationship is there, but we need a do-over. On this week's podcast, we talk about what it takes to do more than put a bandaid over the wounds we inflict on one another. Sometimes, it's as simple as starting the conversation over. But at other times, we may need more. When this happens, it's likely time to take steps related to the deeper journey of forgiveness, or even deeper still, the journey of reconciliation. Join us as we talk about the needs that exist when relationships go awry. In Neil's Own words:"I have spent more than twenty-five years immersed in the practice of meditation. This span includes leading events of 100+ people both in-person and online. Through this time, I have also been a parent and partner, a teacher, author and competitive swim coach. In recent years, 'survivor' has been added to this list as I recover from a relationship with a dysfunctional spiritual mentor. This last piece lends a compelling and affirming sense of story to my discussion of meditation. Talking about what I went through in that relationship, speaking to how I am recovering from this experience, and sharing how all of this is animating my work in remarkable new ways communicates much to listeners. First, that turning toward the difficult in our lives can reveal fresh perspectives and direction to us. Second, that meditation has much to offer our ‘turning toward' process. Put another way, all I've been through of late suggests that our lives - our lives as they are - hold an inner wisdom that has much to offer us as individuals and more. And meditation can play an important role in our deepening relationship with this wisdom, our deepening relationship with the path we are born to express. In many ways, these revelations now form the core of the story and work I'd like to share with you all"Learn more about Neil at:www.neilmckinley.com

The Purpose of Life: "With Swamiji there is no such thing as idle chatter; he talks of the impermanence of the body and the purpose of life -- attaining spiritual enlightenment to avoid samsara (endless rebirth). He reminds me that when I die nothing will go with me; I will have to leave everything behind, except the accumulated spiritual wealth of my personal sadhana [meditation practice]." "In conversation with Swamiji, he suddenly bursts out enthusiastically with 'Brahma Muhurta!' This, I learn, is the time between 3;00 AM and 6;00 AM known as the most favourable time for Sadhana (one's spiritual practices). During Brahmamuhurta, so called as it is considered the most auspicious time for meditating on Brahman (God), the mind is calm and less engaged with worldly thoughts, worries and anxieties. Also the atmospheric energy during this time is more charged with sattva (purity), increasing the likelihood one's practice will go deeper, with the corresponding health and well-being benefits." (Philo of Alexandria) In the case of most Gnostic groups, and the Jewish Essene sect, we only know them through their writings -- their teachings, not much else. In the case of the Therapeutae no collections of their writings have ever been found, but through Philo of Alexandria we have a fairly detailed description of their daily life and weekly format of worship. This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher Aristotle's work of moral theory, the Nicomachean Ethics. Specifically it focuses focuses on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics book 10, and examines his discussion of life centered around the good of contemplation (theoria). Poetry can sometimes feel like an acquired taste, like maybe you either love it or you don't. But what many of us find as we pursue a contemplative life is that poetry can become a helpful way to slow down and take a nice, long look. We sometimes find that poetry becomes a doorway to being able to drink in that present moment. So join us as we talk about the power of poems to aid our engagement of the world around us using our senses, emotions, and intuitions. We feel it. We know it. And we want something different for ourselves. And so today we talk about how our contemplative practices can help us find the balance we're looking for when it comes to screens, media, and all the rest. Join us as we talk about outward engagement paired with inward letting go. Kayleen Asbo is one of the most interesting conversationalists you'll ever meet. Weaving threads from her studies in depth psychology, music, mysticism, myth and history, she crafts a warm and beautiful tapestry before your very eyes. Today we'll talk about:
In this episode, Charlotte reads an essay she wrote about how the church years helps her feel less alone. This essay was originally published in Christianity Today. As we engage more deeply with the ancient streams of art and faith, how they inform one another, and how all of this can create profound new possibilities for belonging, we need ways to respond. Through her work as a spiritual director for writers, artists, and those all along the belief-and-unbelief spectrum, Charlotte Donlon explores how belonging intersects with the contemplative life. Charlotte Donlon helps readers and clients notice how they belong to themselves, others, God, and the world. Charlotte is a writer, a spiritual director for writers, the Writer-in-Residence for a local coffee shop and bookstore, and the founder and host of the Our Faith in Writing podcast and website. She's also the host for the Hope for the Lonely and A Writer's Diary podcasts. Her writing has appeared in The Washington Post, The Curator, The Christian Century, Christianity Today, Catapult, The Millions, Mockingbird, and elsewhere. Her first book is The Great Belonging: How Loneliness Leads Us to Each Other. Join Erin Thomas in another episode of bonus content from "The Contemplative Child." On this week's episode, Erin will discuss the importance of margin for our children. What is margin and how do we achieve this in our family lives? Erin will also unpack the hurried lifestyle components that feel contrary to Contemplative Life, how that impacts our children and why this lays a foundation for practical spiritual disciplines. Erin will also provide simple steps for integrating the practice of silence with our children, a seemingly impossible task. This is the quentessential episode of a "gentle start" to spiritual practices with our children.
