Scott Pearson is a full-time freelance writer and editor working across multiple genres in both traditional and indie publishing. His published works include short stories and novellas in humor, mystery, horror, urban fantasy, and science fiction. His most recent publication is The Sad Rains of Mars: New and Collected Stories, which includes nine previously anthologized stories plus three stories exclusive to this edition. Forthcoming, with fellow author William Leisner, is their as-yet-untitled third volume of Tales of the Weird World War. Scott's Star Trek fiction appears in a handful of anthologies and the e-book exclusive The More Things Change. Although he coscripted two IMAX space documentaries, Space Next and Touch the Stars, they've never been booked in his home state, so he's never seen his name on the big screen. He was an in-house nonfiction editor for ten years, primarily of military history, before getting laid off and going freelance and shifting to fiction. He copyedited the Simon & Schuster Star Trek novels for ten years before becoming their developmental editor. He's an editor and occasional writer for the Star Trek Adventures roleplaying game and proofreads graphic novels and comic books for IDW, including their Star Trek titles. He also copyedits for Baen Books and works directly with many indie authors on their self-published books in the above-mentioned genres. Somewhere in all of that he hopes to finally finish his first novel. Scott and his wife, Sandra, live in the wilds of Minnesota.Website: scott-pearson.comBlog: scottmpearson.wordpress.comFacebook: www.facebook.com/smichaelpearsonBluesky: scottpearson.bsky.social

EPISODE 713 - Scott Pearson - Simon & Schuster's Star Trek Novel Editor and Author Taking Us To New Places and BeyondThis episode features author and editor Scott Pearson sharing his woodland life in Carlton, Minnesota, and his multifaceted career in science fiction, Star Trek, and publishing. From fan to professional, he reveals how persistence and adaptability built his path through a rapidly changing industry.Scott describes his detached office amid the trees, a quiet hub for editing and writing. Publishing has evolved dramatically since his early days mailing manuscripts; self-publishing, once taboo, is now viable. His key advice: keep writing, finish stories, and explore contests or networks to break in. A lifelong Star Trek fan since grade school, he started with derivative sci-fi, shifted to literary fiction in college—his first published story about a Minnesota farming couple—then returned to genre via the Strange New Worlds contest win. This led to Star Trek short stories, a novella, and an ebook, plus anthology work blending sci-fi, mystery, horror, and thriller. His latest, the self-published The Sad Rains of Mars, collects a dozen sci-fi tales. As Star Trek's copy and developmental editor, Scott ensures fiction aligns with canon, verifying quotes by rewatching clips. He balances fandom with professionalism, enjoying stories while catching continuity gaps for "retcons." Fan fiction hones skills but stays non-commercial; licensed work requires agent connections and multi-layer approvals from publishers and Paramount. Conventions like Shore Leave connect writers and editors.Freelance editing—Star Trek novels, Baen Books, IDW comics, self-publishers—fills his days, often crowding personal writing despite a Monday-Thursday schedule. He spotlights Tales of the Weird World War, co-written novellas with Bill Leisner mashing genres in an alternate history of shapeshifting monsters, from 1940s noir to 1950s saucers.Key takeaway: Persistence through industry shifts, from fan roots to pro editing and original work, turns passion into a sustainable creative life—finish stories, honor canon, and balance paid gigs with personal projects.https://scott-pearson.com/Send us Fan MailSupport the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

Author Scott Pearson joins us for a yarn about writing, Star Trek, the most common mistakes authors make, and a whole lot more.   Scott is a full-time freelance writer and editor working across a variety of genres in both traditional and indie publishing. His published works include short stories, novellas, essays, poetry, and role-playing game supplements. He is the co-screenwriter of the IMAX space documentaries Space Next and Touch the Stars. He was the copyeditor for Simon & Schuster's Star Trek novels for ten years prior to becoming the line's developmental editor in early 2025. Since 2016, he has been an editor and occasional writer for the Star Trek Adventures roleplaying game from Modiphius. Late in 2024, he began proofreading comic books and graphic novels for IDW, including their Star Trek line. Literary Treks: A Star Trek Books and Comics Podcast

Scott Pearson.      It takes more than just an author to produce a book. In fact, there's a whole team of people that bring any given book to fruition. It's no different in tie-in fiction like Star Trek. We don't often branch out to talk to anyone but the authors of the new books, and that's an oversight we intend to remedy. In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Casey Pettitt and Jonathan Koan talk with editor Scott Pearson, who recently took on a more hands-on role after the passing of beloved editor, Margaret Clarke. They discuss Scott's work as both an author and an editor, what the editing process looks like, the enjoyable challenge of producing a Star Trek book while a show is still running and much, much more! It's the first episode of 2026—and that means we're officially in the 60th anniversary year of Star Trek. To kick things off, we're also widening the show's scope: we're not just talking Star Trek Adventures at the table anymore—we're going Beyond RPG into the more expansive Trek storytelling universe. Tonight's guest is Scott Pearson, a longtime editor in the Star Trek fiction space (including years as a freelance copy editor for Trek novels) who has recently stepped into a larger editorial role on the Star Trek book line—and who also works in the Star Trek Adventures RPG world. We dig into what editors actually do, the differences between prose and comics, why style guides matter more than you think, and how working across novels, comics, and RPGs changes the way you approach story. Along the way: Trek talk, craft talk, and a lot of appreciation for the fans who keep the Final Frontier thriving. https://linktr.ee/studiotembo #StarTrek #StarTrek60 #StarTrekPodcast #StarTrekFandom #StarTrekWriting #StarTrekEditing #StarTrekAdventures #TTRPG #SciFiPodcast

Over the last five decades Scott Pearson has been a recording artist, a music producer, a TV soundtrack composer, an educator, an entrepreneur, a fine artist and painter, a social media and marketing consultant, and a tour guide for his adopted hometown of Utrecht near Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Leftscape co-host Robin Renée had the opportunity to work with Scott on some musical projects back in the mid 2000s, and was happy to have a chat with him about what the United States looks like from somewhere else. Listen in for thoughts on politics to healthcare to housing, the journey to becoming a "Trump refugee," and what it could mean as individuals and as societies to let love lead. Before the interview, Wendy Sheridan and Robin Renée share info about "Metal" Mike Saunders and competitive art in This Fortnight I Learned. In All the News We Can Handle: multiple legal actions filed to keep Donald Trump off of 2024 ballots, Ohio votes for abortion rights, Democrats retake full control of the Virginia General Assembly, new animal cruelty laws in Victoria, Australia, and a sighting of Attenborough's long-beaked echidna, which was thought to be long extinct. In The Blanket Fort, Wendy and Robin chat about surviving - and hopefully finding some joy - during the upcoming holidays.  Things to do: Visit Scott Pearson's website and read his Curious Tales Untold. Follow Scott Pearson on Facebook and Instagram. Attend Philcon – the world's first and longest-running conference on science fiction, fantasy, and horror!
