When it comes to cars, and more importantly, the driving experience, a lot of folks out there say they prefer a more “analog” experience when they're behind the wheel. But what does that actually mean? For most, it means piloting a vehicle that is mechanical in most of its workings, and not digital. For instance, a vehicle with a drive-by-wire throttle, direct-injection and things like radar cruise control is most certainly not an analog experience. Whereby older vehicles that are mostly free of computers and digital technology, are.  On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ Podcast, Elana Scherr, Senior Features Editor at Car & Driver, sits down with host Mike Musto to discuss why they both gravitate to vehicles that are on in years, but fully up to date when it comes to the driving experience.

Aside from being one of our heroes, Koa Beck is the former editor-in-chief of Jezebel and co-host of “The #MeToo Memos” on WNYC's The Takeaway. Previously, she was the Executive Editor of Vogue.com and the Senior Features Editor at MarieClaire.com. During our interview, we cover issues ranging from white feminism as it intersects with capitalism (a topic central to Koa's upcoming book, “White Feminism”), Indigenous communities in Canada and the delicate notion of territorial acknowledgements. We also talk about whether cats see our hands as part of us, or as separate creatures entirely.

When Kink & Non-monogamous Relationships Turn Toxic with Rachel Krantz - Ep 38

Rachel Krantz, the author of Open: An Uncensored Memoir of Love, Liberation, and Non-monogamy joins us as we continue the discussion from the previous episode about grooming in the kink scene. However, in this episode, we broaden the conversation by including non-monogamy and we deepen it by exploring Rachel's first- hand experience with it. In the past, all three of us, Rachel, Sunny and myself, have been in kink and/or non-monogamous relationships that we came to realize had some toxic patterns of manipulation, grooming, gas lighting, etc. in them. Often such relationships are mixed with amazing highs that keep one hooked and brutal lows that leave one crushed. It is our hope that listeners who are currently in such relationships or healing from one might benefit from the insights in this episode. We start in the thick of it…that time when Rachel was immersed in such a relationship, including the strong emotional tidal pulls that are make such a relationship addictive, sexy, intoxicating, but deeply torturous. And then we can move to the first few years after getting free, followed by where Rachel finds herself now and finally, who she wants to become. Perhaps in doing so, the three of us can provide a road map, some coping tools, or at least some hope for someone who feels lost in this pattern within kink and/or non-monogamy. We hope that you join us for this vulnerable, bold and honest episode as once again, we dare to open deeply. Rachel's Bio: Rachel Krantz is the author of the reported memoir, OPEN: AN UNCENSORED MEMOIR OF LOVE, LIBERATION, AND NON-MONOGAMY, which is a 2023 Lambda Award finalist. She is the host of HELP EXISTING, a new podcast offering help on, well, existing! She is the namer of Bustle, and one of its three founding editors. What would it look like if we completely eliminated the private sector from our rental housing industry and replaced them solely with social housing, like the prefabricated panel buildings  (also known as panelkis) of Bulgaria's Communist era? On this week's episode of the Sync or  Swim Podcast, we focus on the Canadian rental housing industry. Our guest today is Peter  Shawn Taylor, the Senior Features Editor at the C2C Journal. He's here today to discuss his most recent article, titled, ‘Marxism Won't Solve Canada's Rental Housing Crisis — Despite  What Ottawa Thinks,' a piece that grabbed the attention of many players in the Canadian rental housing industry. We dive into an engaging discussion with Peter and gain his insights into the current rental housing crisis being faced in Canada. He talks us through the newly formed  Canadian Federal Housing Advocate role, what the financialization of housing means, and different tensions surrounding the root cause and the solution to the housing crisis. If you're interested in learning more about what's happening in the rental housing industry and how the crisis is being navigated, this episode is for you. You can also follow the link to read Peter's article in the C2C Journal. Don't miss out, tune in now!  Key Points From This Episode:   Who is Peter Shawn Taylor and what led him to write this compelling article.  What the Canadian Federal Housing Advocate, Marie-Josée Houle, and her office have been  tasked with.  Financialization of Housing; what this means, according to Peter.  Peter's belief on the root cause of the rental housing crisis in Canada.  His “solution” to the housing crisis.  How the recommendations could essentially eliminate the private sector from participating in the rental housing market.  We discuss Andrey Pavlov and why social housing isn't the solution for Canada.  Why REITs and other private investors offer better housing options versus Mom and Pop run operations.   What role the government should play in addressing the current rental housing crisis.  A look at other countries and the solutions they've implemented; could they work for  Canada?  Where listeners can keep up-to-date on what's happening in Ottawa.    Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:   Peter Taylor on LinkedIn  C2C Journal  Peter's Article  The Financialization of Housing in Canada: Project Summary Report  The Uneven Racialized Impacts of Financialization  National Housing Council  Rentsync  Sync or Swim Podcast  If you liked this episode, be sure to rate, review, and subscribe or follow Sync or Swim wherever you get your podcasts, Apple, Google Podcasts, or Spotify.

Elana Scherr didn't find her way into old cars as early as most. In fact, she didn't even get a driver's license until she was 21. Then she picked up a cheap Duster and, with a little help from her friends, learned not only how to drive it, but also how to fix it when it broke. When she met her future husband Tom and started making passes at the dragstrip, she was hooked. Many of us came to know Elana from her time spent on staff at Hot Rod Magazine. Her articles jumped off the page with a unique voice that made the reader feel like they were right there, driving around in the featured car or behind the scenes at events like Pike's Peak and Baja.Since Hot Rod, Elana has worked as a freelancer, written a book with Don Prudhomme called Don "The Snake" Prudhomme: My Life Beyond the 1320, and made her way back to a magazine staff position, this time as Senior Features Editor at Car and Driver. In her current gig, Elana gets to drive around in brand new cars, comparing and contrasting with her ever-growing fleet of vintage drivers. She still works plenty of the clever storytelling and automotive adventuring that we've come to expect from her into her copy.Be sure to check out Elana and Tom's YouTube channel (Challengeher) and follow her on Instagram @challengeher.
