OLIVER CROCKER on the original ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on December 15th 2024. This week's special guest is the film-maker, researcher, prolific podcaster, and author, OLIVER CROCKER who joins me to talk not about the long-running police drama THE BILL, about which he is something of an authority, but about another long-running drama from the 1970s and 1980s, the popular Yorkshire-set veterinary series ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL based upon the books by the author ALF WRIGHT who was better known by the pen name JAMES HERRIOT. Starring CHRISTOPHER TIMOTHY, ROBERT HARDY, CAROL DRINKWATER, and PETER DAVISON, with the likes of JOHN McGLYNN and LINDA BELLINGHAM joining the cast for its revival, ALL CREATURES was a huge success across seven series, ninety episodes, and appeared in the BBC schedules for over a decade, making household names of all of its stars, with a popular combination of light comedy, heart-wrenching drama, and lots and lots of the kind of photogenic cute furry animals that had viewers tuning in in their millions. OLIVER quite literally wrote the book on ALL CREATURES with his popular ALL MEMORIES GREAT AND SMALL, a collection of memories and production details about the making of a series which was so well loved that it has been successfully revived by CHANNEL FIVE for five series and counting, so I am very pleased to welcome him to VISION ON SOUND this week, to talk about this, and his TV career in general. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

The Stalls of Barchester was first broadcast on BBC 1 at 11:00 pm on December 24, 1971. It is based on the story "The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral" from the 1911 collection More Ghost Stories by M. R. James, it was adapted, produced, and directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark, who directed every BBC Ghost Stories for Christmas between 1971 and 1977. Can you name them all, Jon?The Stalls of Barchester (1971)A Warning to the Curious (1972)Lost Hearts (1973)The Treasure of Abbot Thomas (1974)The Ash Tree (1975)The Signalman (1976)Stigma (1977)The cast of The Stalls of Barchester includes several actors now better known for their roles in situation comedies or lighter dramas:Clive (Richard Bucket) Swift as Dr. Black (a character who does not appear in the original story). As we have mentioned before, he has had two appearances in Doctor Who of which he was not particularly pleased, so we will only mention them again. Of his appearance in the 2007 Doctor Who Christmas special, Swift declared, "It wasn't until we'd been filming for two weeks that I realized that Mr. Copper is an alien!" And having been asked about his appearance in Revelation of the Daleks (1985), he said, "It was the most bizarre entertainment I have ever been part of."Will Leighton as the cathedral librarian. He also appeared in the previously discussed film, An American Werewolf in London, as one of the Tramps that get killed by David.Robert Hardy as Dr. Haynes. Hardy's birth name was Timothy Sidney Robert Hardy, his nickname being 'Tim'. He has played British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in six separate films, and has also twice played Winston Churchill's World War II ally and friend, American President Franklin D. Roosevelt.Thelma Barlow as Letitia Haynes. Famous for her part of Mavis Riley in Coronation Street, her first episode was transmitted in 1971, but her character only appeared regularly from 1973, when she joined the staff of "The Kabin". She remained in the series for 26 years, appearing in nearly 2,000 episodes.Harold Bennett as Archdeacon Pulteney. Not Pountney as Ross kept hearing. Best known as the lecherous, octogenarian 'Young Mr. Grace' in the long-running comedy series Are You Being Served?, Bennett had a career as an architect and only became an actor when he retired.Erik Chitty as the priest. Seen in Doctor Who: The Deadly Assassin as Engin the Time Lord Coordinator of the MatrixDavid Pugh as John and Ambrose Coghill as museum curatorThe adaptation was filmed on location at Norwich Cathedral and the surrounding cathedral close. Unusual for a BBC television drama of the 1970s, both interior and exteriors in The Stalls of Barchester were originated on 16 mm film, as opposed to the standard studio videotape for interiors. As you may know, every year I offer two episode replays over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. These are always two of my favorite interviews from the year—conversations that stuck with me and are worth a second listen (though, in honesty, they're all worth a second listen!). This year, Thanksgiving in the US falls on November 23, 2023—60 years to the day since the premiere of Doctor Who. What could be more fitting, then, than to revisit my conversation with Peter Davison, who played the Fifth Doctor and brought us one of the most beloved Doctor Who anniversary specials of all time ten years ago?  I hope you enjoy the episode! *** I'm absolutely thrilled to be talking this week with actor Peter Davison, star of All Creatures Great and Small, Doctor Who, At Home with the Braithwaites, West End musicals like Spamalot and Gypsy, and much more. He's also the author of a delightful memoir, Is There Life Outside the Box: An Actor Despairs, and Doctor Who fans also know him as the creator of the 50th anniversary special, The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. Peter talks with me about many of those things, plus how he came to write his book, the "rise of the nerds," and more.  Episode breakdown: 00:01:10 Childhood creativity, music, becoming an actor. 00:10:08 Taking on Doctor Who, and being unsure how to approach the character. 00:17:03 Doctor Who, and playing unpleasant characters well. 00:24:54 All Creatures Great and Small and the lessons learned from Robert Hardy. 00:35:18 Actors fear of being replaced, and the difference between US and UK actors. 00:42:13 Acting as the best job. 00:50:28 Writing his memoir. 00:55:34 The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. 01:03:07 Doctor Who fandom and the "rise of the nerd." A flurry of white filled the empty and quiet night with life and splendor. In this winter slumber, listen close for whispers of love. Jeronimo Lopez Amadori aka Deep Within was born in February of 1989 and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, now based on Barcelona. He felt his attraction to the first synths, rhythm boxes, and subs generated by bands and producers like Chemicals Brothers, Moby, Morcheeba, Tricky, Massive attack, Portishead, Prodigy, Faithless, and more. This search and discovery of electronic music was accompanied by the desire to manipulate and mix those styles. He started taking classes with Juan Pryor, renowned Underground DJ of Buenos Aires, who taught him the concepts of the mixing. Amadori has shared the DJ booth with a vast array of accomplished producers and DJs alike such as Bart Skils, Acid Pauli, Geju, Nick Muir, Olivier Weiter, Sailor&I, Karmon, Digitaria, Jimmy Van M, Robert Hardy, Madloch, Andrea Cassino, Marcelo Vasami, Kevin Di Serna, Soundexile, Facundo Mohrr, Ariel Rodz, Mike Griego, and many more. You can find his tracks on labels like Shanti Moscow Radio, Magician On Duty, The Purr, Gentlemen Lounge Records, Balkan Connection South America, Suffused, among others. Summer is officially here which means the first season of the Optimize Yourself Podcast has come to a close (don't worry...I'll be back right after Labor Day). I cannot express enough how grateful I am to all of my listeners who inspire me to keep this program alive every single day. Please feel free to continue reaching out and sharing your stories (and your challenges) with me. I read every single message I receive. It is my belief that it's no longer necessary to sacrifice your health (and your sanity) in pursuit of your creative career or your business, and in season 2 I promise to continue writing about and sharing every tip I find that can to help design the optimized version of you...one small action step at a time. Since beginning this podcast and blog over 4 years ago I've learned a lot about many different topics, but it's taken me a long time to really find a groove and write on a regular basis. My goal at the beginning of 2018 was to write an in-depth article every two weeks about a topic that I'm both passionate about personally and also could help you improve your life in some small way. Despite my calendar fighting back every single week, I met my goal of releasing new content every two weeks (systems, baby!!!). While choosing my favorites was kind of like choosing my favorite child... Below are my five favorite articles from Season 1 (with a couple bonus articles I wrote for other publications). 1. Dear Hollywood...We Create Entertainment For a Living. We're Not Curing Cancer. Click here for the full article In the wake of the potential IATSE strike and the ongoing negotiations between the motion picture producers (AMPTP) and the many guilds including editors like myself, I felt it necessary to point out what's truly at stake when talking about the hours we work in Hollywood. Much to my surprise (and shock), this article went viral and was shared over 3000 times within 24 hours and read by over 5000 people. For anyone who's tired of being treated like they are disposable and that their quality of life is secondary to getting the job done, I suggest reading this article for a little perspective. 2. The Four Types of Creative Jobs (and the Secret to Knowing Which Is the Perfect Fit For You) Click here for the full article Without question this was the most popular article of the year with thousands of readers! Thinking about the different types of creative jobs was simply a brainstorm I had one morning driving to work, and once the seed was planted it grew like crazy until I spent a solid 2 weeks breaking down the benefits and drawbacks of each type of creative job I could come up with. And then it all came together when I realized the special sauce was having the right attitude. 3. The Socially Awkward Introvert's Guide to Networking With Industry 'Experts' Click here for the full article Coming in at a very close second after a tight race with my 'Creative Jobs' article is my deep dive into turning networking into a skill, even if you're a socially awkward introvert (like me). This post was inspired by a section I wrote in my Ultimate Guide to Making It In Hollywood, but I then expanded upon several of the concepts because I know how difficult it can be trying to build a network of contacts when you HATE networking. I know we'd all much rather sit in our dark rooms and make cool shit, but this guide will hopefully get you out of your cave and into the real world so you can start meeting the right people who will help you land your dream job. 4. Tired of Life Kicking Your Ass? Learn to Fight Back Like a True 'Cobra Kai' Click here for the full article I'm going to admit I was a bit bummed this post didn't get as many readers as I would have hoped, but I'm still including it in my top 5 because whether or not you're a huge Karate Kid fanboy like me, the brilliant new YouTube series Cobra Kai offers up some brilliant life lessons that anyone can incorporate into their lives. If you've dealt with mistreatment or abuse as an adult in a toxic work environment with toxic people (or outright bullies), this post is a must-read. 5. Dear Zack: "I'm having trouble finding work and want to make sure I'm doing everything I can..." Click here for the full article This post was an experiment based on an email I received from a reader seeking advice about her career. I'm approached on a daily basis by people who send their life stories and their greatest struggles, and I found I spend an exorbitant amount of time responding to everyone. Then I realized there could be tremendous benefit to making those responses public. Needless to say, the experiment worked and I'll be doing more 'Dear Zack' articles in the future. Click here to submit your own question for a future article. BONUS ARTICLES I didn't include these articles in my 'Top 5' for the year because they are technically guest posts for other sites, but they were tremendously popular and I want to make sure you didn't miss them. 6. "Empire" Editor Has 7 Steps to Network Successfully In Hollywood (For Frame.io) Click here for the full article This article was written by Robert Hardy of Filmmaker Freedom, and it was based on a recorded conversation we had about my best advice to build a network in Hollywood. This was my inspiration to later write The Socially Awkward Introvert's Guide to Networking because I received so much feedback about how networking is such a lacking skill for so many creative professionals. Thanks again Robert for the awesome article! 7. How I Burned Out As a 'Burnout Coach' (And Then Bounced Back) (For Growth Lab) Click here for the full article This article is a very personal piece that I wrote about my most recent experience with burnout, depression, and a raging case of imposter syndrome back in 2017 after launching a very successful 5 Day Challenge (with over 1110 participants on six continents). Whether you are building a business or just burned out by creative work, this article is an ugly, no holds barred look at the darker side of success that few are willing to talk about.   I'd love to know in the comments below, which was your favorite article of this season? What would you like to learn more about Season 2?

Click to Download Audio If you work in a creative industry, you probably already know how difficult it can be to just making a living. But if you’re intention is to not only making a living but also feel proud of the work you do everyday...that’s a much taller order. It can seem hard enough to find extra time to perfect your specific craft, and it’s often even harder to find the extra time to meet the right people and build your professional network (especially if you’re a socially awkward introvert like me), but often times the barriers standing between you and landing your dream job in the entertainment industry have nothing to do with outside forces...instead the barriers are psychological. That’s right: YOU might be the biggest obstacle keeping you from greatness, and the number one barrier keep you from your dream job is the stories you tell yourself repeatedly every single day. In this episode I chat with Robert Hardy who is an indie filmmaker, writer, and entrepreneur based out of Tucson, Arizona. He currently runs Filmmaker Freedom, a site that helps ambitious filmmakers make work they're proud of and take control of their careers. We chat all about the step-by-step process you can take to become a successful filmmaker, but the key is first understanding how to define “success” for yourself. We also dive deep into the “limiting scripts” that we repeat on a daily basis that convince us we don’t have what it takes to make it and how to overcome them little by little. If you want to dive even deeper into the power of storytelling, specifically understanding the fundamental components of a good story, I recommend jumping back to my previous interview, part 1 in my ‘Storytelling’ series with Story Greenlight founder Jeff Bartsch. Click to Download Audio If you do creative work for a living, you’re a storyteller. It doesn’t matter if you’re a film editor like me working in scripted television, maybe you work in online marketing, you are a director, writer, graphic designer, composer, or anything else creative: You tell stories. Whether it’s with a single image, a specific font choice on a poster, a music cue to increase emotional impact in a scene, or any other decision that impacts how someone perceives your work - you must understand how to make sure the story you’re telling has maximum impact. Even beyond telling stories in your work, the most important story that you need to be able to tell if you intend to be successful is your own story. If you tell other people’s stories for a living with ease but you have no idea how to translate your storytelling abilities into crafting your own story, it’s a good thing there’s now a place for that: Story Greenlight. Story Greenlight is the brainchild of Jeff Bartsch who is a multi-faceted author, teacher, and television editor based out of Los Angeles. He is the author of “Edit Better: Hollywood-Tested Strategies for Powerful Video Editing” and built his career editing television for ABC, NBC, Universal, Disney, Apple, and many others. Jeff is the founder of Story Greenlight, a virtual community that helps online video creators connect with their audience, turn up the impact of their message, and change people’s lives. Whether you create online content, you just want to perfect your elevator pitch or the about page on your website, or if you just want to better understand the fundamental building blocks of good storytelling, this episode is a must-listen. We are pleased as punch in this episode of our podcast as we are able to have a conversation with Sue Malden! Sue was named the first BBC Archive Selector back in 1978 and her work revolutionised the way programs have been selected and kept in archives for not only the BBC but the UK and beyond. Our conversation goes a lot into the archive selection process she put together plus we talk about the work she is doing in the field now. Of course we touch on her project she initiated to track down what might have happened to episodes of lost BBC series. She eventually chose DOCTOR WHO but she talks about some of the other series she considered looking into first. It’s a not only a great conversation about archive television but it’s a great conversation about television archiving. We next move onto a quick conversation with BBC South Producer Richard Latto who recently returned an episode of HUGH AND I called “The Girl on the Poster” from 1964. He talks about where the print has been and how this isn’t the first time the film collector who owns this print has helped out the BBC Archives. We talk with Oliver Crocker who wrote “All Memories Great & Small” from Miwk Publishing about the passing of Robert Hardy. He not only shares great memories of interviewing Robert Hardy for his book but also shares some personal audio of the two talking. Finally, we check in with Chris Perry who gives us all the information for the upcoming Kaleidoscope event on 2/9/17 at Birmingham City University. It’s going to be a fantastic event with great guests and rare material. We share all the information! ABC Podcast: Alex and Brandon Chat

On this week's episode, Alex and Armando chat about going on holiday.Brandon is back in the throes of back to school craziness, so Alex managed to rope on a couple of suckers to take his place, namely Vincent and Armando. After some banter about work, apartments, and Pokémon GO, they finish off their second cycle of the ABC's of Geekdom by taking about a big yellow bird that doesn't live on Sesame Street. Then they move on the corrections segment, including the DC/Looney Tunes crossover comics, Loonatics Unleashed, Digimon, the six degrees of Kevin Bacon to Ron Howard, the definition of anime, Parks and Rec, Al's Toy Barn, James Bond 25, Holes, Darkwing Duck, DuckTales, SDCC exclusive Pop! vinyls, and commercials. After the break with an extra special musical choice, they cover some trailers, including The Darkest Hour, Bright, The Tick, Star Trek Discovery, The Gifted, Krypton, and the new Rocko's Modern Life TV movie. Then they cover a little bit of news, including the casting of Raven in the new live action Teen Titans show, the passing of Robert Hardy, the announcement of Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters coming to Netflix, Millarworld being purchased by Netflix, an update on the Shazam movie, Ian McShane cast in the Hellboy reboot, and John Cena cast in the upcoming Bumblebee spinoff movie. After that, they move on to this week's Hot Takes, including War for the Planet of the Apes and Thomas and the Magic Railroad (and no Game of Thrones. Sorry!). With all of that covered, they move on to this week's feature topic, and since summer is rapidly coming to an end, they decide to take about the best vacations in movies and tv shows and why real life vacations pale in comparison. Then they wrap things up with an all new Fan Fic Fights that is positively shocking.Last but not least, Alex makes an announcement about the future of the podcast; long story short, he and Brandon will be taking a bit of a hiatus while Alex moves up north and gets settled in to law school. Following on from that we discuss some of the threats that wild turtles face - plastics and oil. Finally, for our Species of the Bi-week we lighten the mood with a species which, incidentally, also possesses a hard exterior. Many of you are probably familiar with http://nofilmschool.com/u/roberthardy (Robert Hardy)‘s work for http://nofilmschool.com/ (No Film School), where he wrote film content for the popular website. But it is with his own creation, https://filmmakersprocess.com/ (The Filmmaker's Process), that Hardy has really come into his own, sharing his own experiences and his creative curation of content – often very well thought-out and lengthy articles – that are specifically directed to the truly independent filmmaker.   The more I became familiar with Hardy's work – both from his website and his https://filmmakersprocess.com/subscribe/ (brilliant and thoughtful newsletter) – I realised that I needed to have him on the show. Anyone who knows his writing or how he thinks as a filmmaker, would quickly understand why he'd be a natural fit for https://thedocumentarylife.com/ (TDL). So after months of trying to schedule an interview, I was finally able to carve out the proper time to have a heart-to-heart with this filmmaking brother-in-arms.   Along with a host of other topics, we covered his definition of success as a filmmaker (which differs vastly from the Sundance template most of us have been misled by for 20+ years!), how his time working in the film industry and then as a writer for No Film School inspired the birth of TFP, and then for the first time, Hardy makes it public his intentions to produce a The Filmmaker's Process podcast!   Subscribehttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-documentary-life/id1112679868 (Apple) | https://open.spotify.com/show/0wYlYHJzyk3Y7fHzDDwvmp (Spotify) | https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/thedocumentarylife/the-documentary-life (Stitcher) |  Rate and ReviewIf you have found value in this podcast please leave a review so it can become more visible to others. Simply click the https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/documentary-life-filmmaking-documentary-films-documentary/id1112679868?mt=2 (link) and then click on the Ratings and Reviews tab to make your entry. Thank you for your support!

Sponsored guests appear courtesy of Tenth Planet Events, who will charge for their autographs. Guests Dominic Glynn Dominic is a prolific composer of film and television music, best known to us for the incidental music for The Trial of a Time Lord segments The Mysterious Planet and The Ultimate Foe, Dragonfire, The Happiness Patrol ans Survival. As well as for the Season 23 (Trial of a Time Lord) arrangement of the Doctor Who theme tune. His music has also featured in episodes of The Simpsons, Red Dwarf and Eerie Indiana, and the feature films Holy Man and Kevin & Perry Go Large. Many thanks to Dominic for agreeing to come along. Derrick Sherwin Derrick Sherwin is the last surviving producer of 60s Doctor Who and one of only two surviving producers from the classic series as a whole. Derrick joined Doctor Who as script editor in which capacity he worked on five consecutive stories between The Web of Fear and The Mind Robber. He then wrote The Invasion, acted as de facto assistant producer on two further stories before resuming script editor duties on The Space Pirates, then succeeding Peter Bryant as producer for The War Games and Spearhead From Space. Derrick's influence on Doctor Who has been profound and persists until today – he cast Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor, invented UNIT and developed the Brigadier, invented the Time Lords and came up with the idea of exiling the Doctor to Earth. Peter Davison Peter Davison is best known for his roles as the fifth incarnation of the Doctor in Doctor Who and Tristan Farnon in James Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small. Davison was born Peter Moffett in Streatham, London. The family then moved to Knaphill in Surrey at which time he became a member of an amateur theatre company called the Byfleet Players Davison studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama. His first job was as an actor and assistant stage manager at the Nottingham Playhouse. He chose the stage name Peter Davison to avoid confusion with the actor and director Peter Moffatt, with whom Davison later worked. His first television work was in a 1975 episode of the children's science fiction television programme The Tomorrow People In 1978, Davison's performance as the youthfully mischievous Tristan Farnon in All Creatures Great and Small made him a household name. Davison has said that he was mainly cast in the role because he looked as if he could be Robert Hardy's younger brother. Davison subsequently appeared alongside Dickinson as the Dish of the Day in the television version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1981), whose producers considered it humorous for an actor known for playing a veterinary surgeon to appear as a cow. In 1981, Davison signed a contract to play the Doctor for three years, succeeding Tom Baker (the Fourth Doctor) and, at age 29, was at the time the youngest actor to have played the lead role. Deborah Watling Deborah Watling, the daughter of actors Jack Watling and Patricia Hicks, began work as a child actress with a regular role as the niece of Peter Brady in The Invisible Man television series. She was later cast for the lead role in Alice, Dennis Potter's version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, for the BBC's The Wednesday Play. Watling played Victoria in Doctor Who from 1967 to 1968, though her only remaining complete serials are The Tomb of the Cybermen and the recently recovered The Enemy of the World. She also appeared in Dimensions in Time, Downtime and the audio drama Three's a Crow. In November 2013 she appeared in the one-off 50th anniversary comedy homage The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. Terry Molloy Follow :   Site :  Terry Molloy has been a member of the cast of BBC Radio 4′s The Archers, playing Mike Tucker, since 1973 and has won awards for his work as an actor on radio. On television, Molloy is perhaps best known for hiplaying Davros, the creator of the Daleks, in the stories Resurrection of the Daleks, Revelation of the Daleks and Remembrance of the Daleks. He also appeared in the Doctor Who story Attack of the Cybermen as an undercover policeman named Russell. In recent years, Molloy has reprised the role of Davros in the Big Finish Productions audio dramas Davros, The Juggernauts, Terror Firma, Masters of War, The Davros Mission and the four-part miniseries I, Davros. He also played Davros in a 2005 stage production, The Trial of Davros. Michael Troughton Follow :   Site :  Michael Troughton is an English actor, writer and teacher. He is the son of actor Patrick Troughton and the younger brother of David Troughton. He has appeared in many film, television and theatre roles, most notably as Melish, in Minder and Sir Piers Fletcher-Dervish in The New Statesman from 1987 to 1992. His biography of his late father, Patrick Troughton, published by Hirst Publishing, was launched in November 2011. He has also completed a number of audio dramatisations for Big Finish. David Troughton David Troughton was born in Hampstead, London. He comes from a theatrical family: he is the son of actor Patrick Troughton, elder brother of Michael Troughton, and father of both Sam Troughton and Warwickshire cricketer Jim Troughton. His roles have included guest appearances in Doctor Who, first as an extra in The Enemy of the World (1967–1968), then as a soldier in The War Games (1969) and in a considerably larger role as King Peladon in The Curse of Peladon (1972). He appeared in the 2008 series of Doctor Who as Professor Hobbes, in the episode “Midnight”. He has also performed in a Big Finish Doctor Who audio production titled Cuddlesome where he plays the Tinghus. He also played the Black Guardian in two audios: The Destroyer of Delights and The Chaos Pool. He also returned as King Peladon in The Prisoner of Peladon audio. In 2011 he took on his father's role as the Second Doctor in two audio plays, also featuring Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor and in November 2013, Troughton appeared in the one-off 50th anniversary comedy homage The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot.
