Grief comes to all of us at one stage or another and so Michelle and Liz wanted to tackle the subject head-on with the CEO and Founder of The Good Grief Trust, Linda Magistris. Join them as they discuss everything from the lack of support for bereaved families to dealing with both the shorter and longer-term impact of losing someone close to you. They also explore the reasons why death is such a taboo subject in the modern world and why it needs to change. KEY TAKEAWAYS  There is a lack of centralised support in the health industry for bereavement. Health professionals are very inconsistent in the support and resources they offer to people suffering from grief. Dealing with death isn't just what happens after you have lost someone. Pre-bereavement support can be invaluable. When founding The Good Grief Trust, Linda recognised that she needed to take things online. So that she could tailor support for every situation as well as keep them continually up to date. Linda's media background reassured her that she would be able to get a lot of great recognition and support for the charity for free. To date, she has some incredible patrons of the charity including actor Dame Penelope Wilton DBE and former Wham member Shirlie kemp as well as Linda's former co-star on Grange Hill Todd Carty, and actor, Greg Wise. Connecting various organizations and groups together was one of Linda's main drives in building The Good Grief Trust. So that everyone could work together to create a strong network of support for anyone and everyone that needs it. There are so many different forms and types of grief, it is essential people get tailored support for what they are going through. We often don't know how to support those around us suffering from grief, but being compassionate and kind can mean the world to someone, even if you don't have the right words. There is no timeline for grief. It can also change. What you might need one day might be totally different a week or even an hour later. People need compassion, patience and understanding. BEST MOMENTS  “If the health professionals don't know of the big national charities, they need to have that information, they need to know what is available for everyone” “Bereavement is everyone's business. Bereavement is something that all of us are going to experience at one time” “There is no timeline for grief” “There's an absolute lack of kindness and understanding” “Your grief is unique” EPISODE RESOURCES   The Good Grief Trust The Good Grief Trust YouTube ABOUT THE GUEST     Linda Magistris Linda first met her partner Graham Theakston when she was an actress in the original cast of Grange Hill in 1978. Graham was one of the directors and by chance, they met again 30 years later. She had been running a portfolio of businesses since they first worked together, from a Wedding Consultancy to Vintage Tea Rooms, and Graham was a BAFTA-winning success in TV and Film and they spent 8 very happy years together until sadly he was diagnosed with a rare soft tissue sarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer, and died five and half months later. After his death, Linda struggled to cope with her grief, with limited access or knowledge around the support services that could help her individual needs.  She realised that the UK did not have one central signposting resource to help health professionals in their work supporting the bereaved and so in 2016 The Good Grief Trust charity and website was launched.  The Good Grief Trust is now the UK's leading bereavement network, with over 900 charities and support services under one umbrella.   Their condolence and signposting card is distributed to all NHS Trusts in England, GP practices, community services and those working with the bereaved and the charity has developed a vast, interactive and supportive community across their extensive social platforms.  They are Secretariat and co-founder of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Bereavement Support, working with Government to influence improvement to UK bereavement care and creator of the National Grief Awareness Week campaign. Linda's vision is to ensure that no-one who is grieving falls through the net, and that anyone bereaved under any circumstance knows they are not alone and that there is help and hope for a way forward with their life.  ‘Grief can be complicated, but access to support should never be' ABOUT THE HOSTS Liz Copping is a Networking Pro & event consultant, leaping out of her comfort zone to co-host this podcast. At the moment he's starring in Strictly Come Dancing, inspired by his sister Clare. Greg looked after her as she was dying from breast cancer. He picked up her blog when she was too unwell to write, which became a beautiful book.   He joins me to talk about the privilege of being her carer and how it changed his perception of death. I was blown away by his reflections on dying and it's certainly changed how I think about the future. We also talked a little bit about fake tan and sequins on the dance floor, and what he would put in the podcast ‘Jar of Joy'.   We touched on some pretty heavy subjects in this episode. The actor Greg Wise's sister Clare died in September 2016 from cancer, she started a blog post to update family and friends, which Greg took over writing when Clare became too ill. Two years after she died the blog was turned into their book titled 'Not That Kind of Love’. We met before lockdown to talk about Clare’s death, their relationship, navigating cancer, and post-traumatic growth. This is a useful conversation for anyone caring for someone dying and gives insight into grief and love through Greg's own personal and moving experience.

It's another example of the excesses of the Britpop late-90s resulting in a mess of a film. Not even the acting powers of Anna Friel, Joanna Lumley, Greg Wise, and many others, adapted from a hit novel that came to embody the "chick lit" era until Bridget Jones turned up, could salvage this tripe. On September 14 Daisy Knatchbull is making history by opening her made-to-measure women’s clothing brand, The Deck London, on Savile Row. The Deck London will be the first Savile Row tailor to cater exclusively to women. Daisy reveals how, in 2016, she first shook up the bespoke scene by appearing at Royal Ascot in a Lock & Co. top hat and tails by Huntsman & Sons, the Savile Row tailor where her great-grandfather, Lord Louis Mountbatten, was a client. (Nicknamed “Dickie,” Greg Wise and Charles Dance have portrayed him on The Crown.) But as Daisy tells it, she derived fashion inspiration from her great-grandmother, the legendary renegade, Lady Edwina Mountbatten, and her maternal grandmother, Sylvia Cooper. As the media makes noise about the death of the suit, Daisy Knatchbull explains why COVID-19 will not kill off the style of finely crafted suit she is making for women – and with her all female team – at 19 Savile Row. I can't believe it has almost been a year since the last Art of Dying Well podcast but we're back talking death and dying and all the issues surrounding this difficult but very human journey. Our main interview this month is a really interesting conversation with an actor – the very charming and engaging Greg Wise. If you've been watching The Crown on Netflix you've probably seen Greg playing Lord Mountbatten. But we're not talking acting, we're talking about his sister Clare. Clare died in 2016 after a long, hard battle with cancer and along the way kept an intelligent, witty and moving blog about what she was going through. When she became too sick to go on, Greg finished the story – continuing, in a brutally honest and engaging fashion, what they went through as brother and sister during those hard months.‘The Voice from the Chaplain's Chair' is a fascinating chat with a really interesting guy. It's rare you come across someone who's so passionate about what they do that it's not a job it's a calling. I spoke to hospice chaplain Fr Peter Scott from St Joseph's Hospice in Hackney.

The film choices certainly stack up: starting with Winslet's Oscar win for the post-World War II drama The Reader, proceeding on to her breakthrough role as Marianne Dashwood in Emma Thompson's 1995 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, and then as the female lead in a little film known as Titanic. The always razor-sharp analysis involves Alan Rickman impressions, a timely reference to Divine Brown, and a failure on both hosts to say the word "admirable". This episode also marks the debut appearances of Ralph Fiennes, Ioan Gruffudd, and Billy "Slam Evil" Zane, whilst the actor Greg Wise is mocked for being a minor celebrity. And if you think this episode is ending on a Celine Dion song, you're only partly correct.

Beth Pattinson, development executive at BBC Films talks to Sadie Jones, screenwriter and novelist, ahead of the debut of her two-part drama, The Outcast, on BBC One. Sadie details her journey as an unproduced screenwriter to novelist and back. The Outcast began as a feature film script but when producers were unable to make it the way they wanted to Sadie turned the story into a novel. Within a year, the book was published to wide critical acclaim and won the Costa First Novel Award. It was also a finalist for the prestigious Orange Prize, as well as a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for First Fiction. When Christine Langan, Head of BBC Films, read the novel, she knew it had to be brought to the screen. Blueprint Pictures came on board to develop the novel with BBC Films as a feature film, but it proved too difficult to adapt the story into a 120 minute feature. BBC Drama then came on board and the story was split into a two-part drama for television. Beth and Sadie recount the development process, structuring the story across mediums, defying the odds and never giving up. The Outcast stars George Mackay, Greg Wise, Jessica Barden, Hattie Morahan, and Jessica Brown Findlay in what has been decribed as a deeply romantic, uncomfortably honest coming-of-age story set in booming post-war Britain.

Libby Purves meets cartoonist Gerald Scarfe; former journalist Eimear O'Callaghan; actor Greg Wise and rock climber Ben Moon. Eimear O'Callaghan is a former BBC news editor whose book Belfast Days is based on the diary she kept in 1972 at the height of the Troubles. The book records her and her family's experiences throughout this turbulent year. From the inconvenience of British Army check-points and power cuts to the horror of shootings, bombings and almost 500 killings, her teenage jottings convey a family and community trying to function normally against a background of violence and bloodshed. Belfast Days: A 1972 Teenage Diary is published by Merrion Press. Gerald Scarfe CBE is a political cartoonist. He started drawing for Punch and Private Eye and is now best known for his work in the New Yorker and the Sunday Times. His latest exhibition, Milk Snatcher, The Thatcher Drawings features his cartoons of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher. It spans a period of 22 years from her days as a member of the shadow cabinet to her leadership of the Conservative Party, her tenure as prime minister and her political decline. Milk Snatcher, The Thatcher Drawings exhibition is at the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, Co. Durham. Actor Greg Wise returns to the theatre after an absence of 17 years to star in Brad Fraser's play Kill Me Now. He plays Jake Sturdy, a once successful writer, who now cares for his disabled son, Joey, with the support of a motley crew of friends and family. Greg's acting credits include the films Sense and Sensibility and Effie Gray and his theatre work ranges from Richard II to The Recruiting Officer. Kill Me Now is at the Park Theatre, Finsbury Park, London. In 1990 Ben Moon made rock climbing history with the first ascent of Hubble in the Peak District, now widely recognised as the world's first F9a graded climb. A major figure in the sport climbing movement of the 1980s and the bouldering phenomenon of the 1990s, he fell in love with climbing at seven when he was taken to the Lake District on a family holiday. His story is told in Statement - The Ben Moon Story by Ed Douglas, published by Vertebrate.
