On August 22,1993, a 16-year-old Indigenous girl from Hilo, Hawaii went out with a man she had met earlier in the day and never came home. He and two other men drugged her, sexually assaulted her and beat her. They drove her to a nearby state park and tossed her off a 20-foot cliff. But despite all this, when her family reported her missing, police wrote her off as a runaway teen. Years later, one of her killers confessed to her grisly murder and the torture she was put through. But her body has never been found. Her family has never been given the closure they need and deserve. This is the story of Sequoya Vargas . If you have any information concerning Sequoya's case, please contact: Hawaii County Police Department at phone number 808-935-3311. I had Laura Worthington on today and it became one of the most interesting podcasts I've ever had because I know so little about this field, even though it's an art form. Laura makes fonts. She comes from a calligraphy background and it's so unique because at a very young age, she knew exactly what she wanted to do. She was focused and completely obsessed with the written word.Laura is one of probably 1500 people in the world that actually makes their entire living from designing fonts. It turns out that she's done fonts for everything. In fact, in my gallery, one of the fonts on the wall for Shonot Begay's work is one of hers. The movie 'Joker' with Joaquin Phoenix has some of her fonts in it as well. You can almost go down just about any road and see her fonts, either on billboards or on your newspaper and so it's a fascinating world she lives in. It's technical too, but that's the interesting part - trying to understand (for me, somebody who is really a neophyte with all of this) what you do to curate and create fonts and just the technology and the language of what it is to be somebody who does this for a living.I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did. She's very dynamic and I would recommend watching this on YouTube if you can because she is very animated and that just adds to the whole joy of the podcast. So Laura Worthington on episode 238 of Art Dealer Diaries Podcast.

How can business owners maximize the value of their company? Look no further than the people in your organization and the talent in your region.Private equity enables entrepreneurs and founders to achieve the American Dream by offering a succession plan to an organization that will be a great steward of the company and carry out the mission of the founder. Borgman Capital does just this. The firm works with midwestern companies across all sectors, many in the small-to-midsized manufacturing market, to purchase and grow the business so the founder can transition to the next phase of their life. This is the American Dream for entrepreneurs. In this episode, we talk with Sequoya Borgman, Managing Director of Borgman Capital, about strategies for how businesses can create the most value in their company, why investing in your people is so crucial for a business owner, and why manufacturing is ripe for opportunity in the U.S.3 Big Takeaways from this episode:Leaders can maximize the value of their company by professionalizing the business: Many founders tend to hold onto all the insight, relationships and know-how for every function of the company. When all the value is tied up in the owner, it's very difficult to replace that individual, leaving risk for the buyer. Business owners can increase their company's value by professionalizing their leadership team and handing off key responsibilities and knowledge to up-and-coming leaders who will help run the organization after the owner exits.Any organization that isn't using the most up-to-date technology is falling behind: In private equity, this means cutting-edge analytics technology to help valuate a prospective portfolio company. But the same is true for the companies in their portfolio - automation raises the value of the company and solves many of the workforce issues faced by manufacturing businesses. Manufacturing is booming in the United States and will continue to do so, and those who automate now will get ahead in the future. Having a workforce development plan in place will create added value to your company: Any private equity company's goal is to grow their portfolio businesses - and that means hiring and training new employees. With the added increases in automation, companies that already have learning and development strategies in place are worth more than those who don't. Tonight's special guest is Sequoya Griffin from Las Vegas, Nevada, a returning NAASCA family member and survivor of childhood trauma. She entered the foster care system at 4 years old and was later adopted at 10. Sequoya's the author of "Goodbye, SaraJane: A Foster Child Writes Letters to Her Mother," described as the honest, heartbreaking story of an abused child's horrid experience. Her life in foster care was a terrible existence of emotional, physical, and racial abuse that was a continual ordeal of lies, beatings, and punishments by adults in the foster system. From the caseworker lacking empathy and turning a blind eye to the physical and emotional damages Sequoya and her siblings suffered by adults and foster siblings that went ignored, her story sheds light on some of the major failures of the current child protective service system in the United States. The emotional toll of being taken from one abusive family only to be placed with another was unbearable, and she had the experience of what sadly many foster children do of losing everything meaningful. Even her birth name was taken from her, and Sequoya says it best in her book that her adoptive mother "had slowly snatched my identity away from me." Currently, Sequoya is an advocate for neglected children and vulnerable young adults with a passion to continue bringing awareness to all aspects of the foster care and adoption system. Besides writing literature and music, Sequoya finds hope and strength as a survivor through her spirituality. She is the founder of Key Purpose Books LLC, a book and media publishing company of God-given stories.

Continuing where we left off yesterday, the 80's was a dearth of diversity in musical styles. The primary focus over these three volumes includes industrial music and it's more commercial off-spring. If anyone watches AMC's 'Catch and Halt' Fire' you get a really good feel for the time, the music and the burgeoning scene in computers in the early 80's. My best friend Dan had purchased a used Mackintosh from the local pawn shop along with a dot matrix printer. You know the kind, the paper had holes down the side so it could move along as it was being printed. The only thing he could really do on his computer was type his school papers and print them. Of course, he could also play ping pong or space invaders, which was pretty cool. Dan took his passion for computers and landed a gig with the burgeoning Dell computers there in Austin. Everybody knows who Dell is, so I'd say Dan is sitting pretty at the movement. Our other friend SJ or Sequoya disappeared off the face of the earth when his father called him back home for good. He had a drinking problem that he just couldn't keep under control, which was a shame because he was a super nice guy. I think he's married and a lawyer now or something. Then there's Dale. An unfortunate accident stemming from a nasty divorce that had left him permanently scarred and financially ruined took him years to get out from under it. Last I heard, he found his calling and was living in a commune smoking a bunch of pot. Me, I was just s shithead going to clubs on 6th street in Austin and sneaking out at night to hook up with some strangers in an alley. It wasn't until ten years later that I purchased my first computer at the end of the semester in 1998 and spent the winter break taking it apart and putting it back together again to better understand how it worked. That was the point I officially became a geek. The music at the time stands for itself and I'll go into more of its darker underpinnings in the next post. Until then...ENJOY! Tonight's special guest is Sequoya Willis from Chester, Virginia, a returning NAASCA family member appearing again as a special guest especially to update us on her progress with "The Sequoya Show". Sequoya grew up neglected, abused, starved, and malnourished. Amazingly she survived the turmoil of her past. With parents who cared more about their next hit of crack cocaine than the wellbeing of their children, it is amazing Sequoya is still in her right mind. She cried out for help; while everyone including friends and family turned their back. Her own mother threw her for a loop when she placed her daughters' lives on the line for the love of a man who hung her out of a three story window. Going to school was her only way of having peace, until her classmates made her life a living hell. School officials and The Child Welfare Administration ignored the signs of abuse and believed the lies that were fed to them. Surrounded by rape, lies, drugs, and alcohol, Sequoya cried out to someone she never knew. She was told never to talk to strangers, but a stranger saved her life. Today, Ms Willis is an author of two books about her experiences, "The Fight of My Life: Memoirs of a Child Abuse Victim" and "The Fight Continues: Sagas of a Foster Child" as well as a Motivational Speaker, Life Coach, Internet Talk Show Host, and Inspirationalist. Her goal is to assist as many people and families as she can in reaching their fullest potential and purpose. Being a child abuse survivor and foster child, she relates to her clients', readers', and audience's feelings of losing themselves, worthlessness, uncertainty about life's purpose, self-doubt, and fear about their future.
