Campbell Rutherford is a rising junior studying Applied Mathematics at Harvard University. Blind since birth, she is passionate about ensuring that blind individuals can access the resources necessary for them to succeed in school, the workplace, and life in general, particularly in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Before college, Campbell worked as both a website accessibility tester and an assistive technology instructor, specializing in teaching students to access and present mathematics materials, and she continues to take any opportunity she can to tell her story and educate others about the importance of assistive technology in the daily lives of people like her. In her free time, Campbell enjoys playing piano, reading, writing, and spending time with her family, friends, and six rescue cats. Liza Rutherford is a choreographer from Dandridge, TN, and is the homeschool mom of two girls, Campbell and Harris, and wife to Mike. After a lengthy journey to get an accurate diagnosis for Campbell, suddenly the Rutherfords were immersed in the deep waters of acquiring services and an education for a braille reader in a rural Appalachian community with limited resources. After 3 years of Montessori School and 3 years of public school, they settled on homeschooling Campbell for grades 5 through 12. It was a fantastic 9 years of exploring, networking, and learning as a family, and ultimately led to Campbell now thriving in Cambridge, MA as an applied mathematics major at Harvard. In her free time, Liza enjoys reading, knitting, cooking, going to the theatre, and back-porch-sitting with her family in the hills of East Tennessee. Liza and Campbell sat down with us recently to share their journey from diagnosis and early intervention to combatting low expectations in schools to their journey all the way to Harvard!

In this episode of the Work in Progress podcast, I'm joined by Dr. Nicole Smith, chief economist for Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce and co-author on their new report examining which job skills will be the most in-demand over the next eight years and what kind of education and training will you need to get them. As we start this conversation, it's important to know that most jobs already require some kind of post-secondary education and training beyond high school. "We're not necessarily talking about a bachelor's degree only, or a master's degree, or some sort of technical PhD. We're actually talking about skills in the middle," explains Smith. "We're talking about certificates, test-based certifications, vocational training licenses that deal with these technical jobs, and associate's degrees, as well." Right now, about 68% of the nation's jobs already require that additional training beyond high school. According to CEW's After Everything: Projections of Jobs, Education, and Training Requirements through 2031, as we shift even more toward a knowledge-based, tech-based economy, the percentage of jobs requiring more than a high school diploma will soar to 72% by 2031. CEW researchers project that the U.S. will have 171 million jobs in 2031, an increase of 16 million net new jobs from 2021. During that period, the analysis suggests there will be 18.5 million job openings per year on average, and some 12.5 million of these annualized openings will require at least some college education. According to the report, these latest projections demonstrate the central role postsecondary education plays in preparing the workforce of the future, "despite the fact that young people increasingly doubt the value of a degree and college enrollments continue to decline." Smith says two major factors contribute to the increasing demand for postsecondary education and training – the fastest-growing industries require workers with disproportionately higher education levels compared to industries with slower growth and occupations as a whole are steadily requiring more education as tasks within occupations become more complex. She says it is important that workers and job seekers look at the skills needed as the nature of work changes and seek out opportunities to stay up-to-date on those skills to stay relevant in the job market and advance their careers. "All of our data, all of our information, all of our history, points us to the fact that, in order for you to move up in your job, in order for you to get that promotion, managers are requiring you to have higher levels of education, higher levels of skill, and you have to recognize lifelong learning as a thing now, where you go back and you get that certification" or additional training, says Smith. Full-text: Cascade Policy Institute's bill to make it easier for Oregon high school students to graduate early by passing the GED is getting a hearing this week. We hope you will reach out to the committee to voice your support for the bill. This Wednesday, March 8, the Oregon House Committee on Education will hold a hearing on HB 3068. Currently, it is almost impossible for an Oregon high school student to take the GED exam. In most cases, students must drop out of school before they're allowed to take the GED. HB 3068 lifts that restriction. If the bill passes, any student aged 16 or older can take the GED test. (Parental consent would be required for students under 18.) Students who pass will be awarded diplomas, meaning they will be considered high school graduates and free from compulsory school attendance. HB 3068 will boost Oregon's graduation rate because students who pass the GED receive diplomas and will be considered high school graduates. HB 3068 will reduce Oregon's dropout rate because students won't have to drop out first before taking the exams. Our bill has bipartisan support across both houses of the Oregon legislature. That's because this is a common-sense solution that imposes no obligations on students, families, or the state. Even better, HB 3068 does not require any new spending or taxes. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/coffeewithcascade/message

This week, Bridging Philly marks a year since Russian forces invaded Ukraine, causing millions of Ukrainians to flee the Texas-sized country. In addition to Europe and other safe harbors, the United States has been a refuge to hundreds of thousands displaced Ukrainians. Host Racquel Williams talks to two people from the Philadelphia region who have been helping victims of the conflict. Immigration attorney, Cathryn Miller-Wilson, the Executive Director of HAIS Pennsylvania, an immigrant-assistance organization in Philadelphia, clarifies that most of the Ukrainians here are not legally designated as refugees, but have entered the U.S. through a complicated sponsorship program. Cooper University Health Care Emergency Medicine Physician, Joshua S. Rempell, MD, MPH, describes his experience as part of a 12-member medical professional team who recently flew to Ukraine to train local medical workers and civilians in emergency medical care, trauma and life support methods. Then, Shara Dae Howard taps into the mind of a 9-year-old Bensalem boy who just earned his high school diploma, and is deciding which Ivy League university he will attend. He attributes his remarkable success to having academic resources and love from his family. About the Show: “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” Gandhi At least for the last 150 years, education has been an essential part of society. Every industrialized nation puts a high value on education and credentials. One thing that is probably lost on most Americans is that higher education isn't always the goal for all. Only one-third of the US population has a college education, while two-thirds have a High School Diploma. Many individuals have been priced out of higher education due to the cost and commitment required. Still, some are left out because they never finished High School. About 10% of the U.S. Population never finishes High School. In our research on this subject, we discovered that this statistic alone could be incentive enough to encourage those to get their GED. The stakes for those that don't get a High School diploma are undoubtedly high. According to a recently released CDC Study, “Again and again, the trends across educational levels indicate that adults with no high school diploma or GED are consistently at the greatest risk for the leading causes of disease and death.” If you are part of this group, our goal is not to bring you down or shame you. It's quite the opposite. We want to encourage you that it is never too late to get your GED and improve your life skills in many areas. We recently sat down with Jessica Ferguson and Ahu Johnson from the Stephen M. Percival Adult Education Program to learn more about available Adult Education and learning options. This Adult Education program is part of the Fayetteville Public School System. They offer Adult Education classes for those that want to get their GED, Citizenship, ESL, Job Training, and Workplace classes. The options are endless, and the opportunities are there for people in Northwest Arkansas to improve their situation through the classes offered by the Adult Education program.
