New York Times health writer, Jancee Dunn, is a connoisseur when it comes to writing about cutting-edge research and scientific information. Her articles and books are based on exhaustive interviews with multiple experts, yet she manages to make them read like edgy sitcoms. Her new book, Hot and Bothered: What No One Tells You About Menopause and How to Feel Like Yourself Again is anything but dry. And as an investigative reporter and New York Times bestselling author of eight books, including How Not to Hate Your Husband After Kids,- it's no surprise that she has once again, gotten it exactly right. In this episode, I sit down with Jancee to discuss her experience when she entered perimenopause how she was blindsided by being "hot and bothered", and what she learned along the way.   Jancee Dunn is the columnist for Well at the New York Times. She is also a New York Times bestselling author of eight books, including How Not to Hate Your Husband After Kids, which was published in twelve languages. Why You Need A Work Best Friend And How To Find One

Do you have a work best friend? New research says work besties are the key to professional and personal happiness. The Gallup organization tracked workplace relationships (non-romantic) and found having a work best friend is good for morale and good for the bottom line. The research showed those relationships are good for employee engagement. Having a work best friend is proven to raise morale, increase productivity and help with employee retention. Most interesting, the need for strong work connections has gone up since the pandemic thanks to an increase in remote work and a decrease in worker satisfaction. Bosses: want to hang onto your people and make them happier without spending money? Create a supportive environment that encourages colleagues to interact beyond the scope of their jobs. Employees: want to enjoy the place you likely spend the bulk of your day? Find a friend and enjoy life on the job together by vesting in each other's personal and professional lives. The research is so overwhelming that wellness writer Jancee Dunn included the importance of work friends in Day 5 of the NY Times Wells series, the "7 Day Happiness Challenge." My KCRA 3 colleague and work bestie Edie Lambert joins me in this episode to explain how we forged a deep relationship despite the fact we've never worked in the same room at the same time. And we'll offer a four-step plan on how to find a friend at work. I Resent My Partner Now That We're Parents

The Honest Mom Podcast

It's OK to say this out loud. There will be days where you are shooting daggers out to your partner because you feel they aren't helping enough, doing what you need, supporting you the way you want to be supported now that you're BOTH parents. They get to go back to work. You have to go back to work and they get to be home with the baby. You're doing all the housework while they get home at 7pm and are the "fun parent". They don't do it like you do it. They're so relaxed and you're full of anxiety. There are so many unique scenarios that whirl around our postpartum minds that create resentment, which can eventually lead to other dangerous emotions. In this week's episode, we talk about my own resentment- that my husband doesn't even know about. It was my own shit I was dealing with, my stories I was creating, the fears & anxieties that stopped me, my inability to detach, my unrealistic expectations that I wasn't even communicating, along with my assumptions. My communication skills were worse than my infant's. At least she was crying to let us know she was pissed. I held it all in and my resentment grew into something it didn't have to be. I want to help you avoid what I did as a new mom. Because resentment doesn't just stop after infancy. It can carry on throughout your partnership if you don't find some solid communication skills to share with your partner so you can avoid the road I traveled. Or worse. Share this episode with your best friend, sister, or partner if that can break the ice to you both talking about this very unique change in your lives and partnership. It isn't all bliss or making your marriage even more "magical"... there's some hard shit to deal with and situations that challenge your relationship more than you can imagine. And no one is talking about it. Until now. Thank you for listening, sharing, and connecting with me to share your honest motherhood journey. Enjoy this episode!!! Jennie True is an absolute gem! I loved this conversation! The great exhale. If you don't mind a little profanity and shocking realism.. this episode is going to be the fresh air you've needed, this year.We cover from  being inclusive to the shocking realities of parenthood and doing “your thing” with littles around.Don't miss this!_________About Jennie:Jenny Pritchett (alias Jenny True) is a nationally recognized columnist for Romper, where she publishes advice on pregnancy and parenting, as well as on her popular blog Jenny True: An Excruciatingly Personal Mommy Blog, which was a finalist for the Mom 2.0 2019 People's Choice Awards. Her new book: You Look Tired: An Excruciatingly Honest Guide to New Parenthood is in the tradition of Ali Wong and Amy Schumer, and is a whip-smart, spit-out-your-coffee funny guide for new parents. Plenty of "new parent" guides cover the basics of breastfeeding, bonding, sleep, and "getting back in shape." But nowhere is there a guide that tells you about the medieval act of pumping, why one shouldn't turn to online pregnancy/parenting forums, and the answer to the question: WTF is this squeeze bottle thing from the hospital?YOU LOOK TIRED is a totally honest, tell-it-like-it-is guide for new moms and parents who don't want any more advice. Writing as Jenny True on her "Excruciatingly Personal Mommy Blog" and in the "Dear Jenny" column on Romper, Jenny has been called the "postpartum feelings doula," as she doles out her unique mix of humor, rage, and encouragement (with a smidge of practical advice), including:• Birth Hurts: Prenatal yoga is a waste of time.• Jabba the Hutt Was Just Postpartum: It explains so much.• and more.ADDITIONAL ADVANCE PRAISE:"In You Look Tired, Jenny Pritchett dishes out hilarious, in-your-face advice to overwhelmed moms and moms-to-be. If you don't have a trust fund, a live-in nanny, or the organizational skills to breastfeed elegantly while getting a pedicure, you need this book. In the voice of her popular alter ego Jenny True, Pritchett tells it like it really is, not the way it would be if you were floating through parenthood on a cloud of maternal fairy dust. There is no maternal fairly dust, people! Fortunately, there is Jenny True."—Michelle Richmond, New York Times bestselling author of five novels and two award winning story collections, mother of one, and Jenny True fan"A must-have for moms-to-be."—Bunmi Laditan, author of The Honest Toddler: A Child's Guide to Parenting"What a relief this book is."—Jancee Dunn, author of How Not to Hate Your Husband after KidsJennie Linkshttps://www.jennytrue.comhttps://m.facebook.com/jennytrueblog/www.instagram.com/Jennie_true_author_momhttps://vimeo.com/user101177627Buy the book:https://www.jennytrue.com/the-book_________ANNOUNCEMENTS:1.  FREE LIVE Midlife Fertility Q and A on youtube every Friday 10AM PST! New youtube videos  each month.__________Imperfect Parenting Coaching, Podcast and More!Imperfect Parenting Website:https://imperfectparenting.netImperfect Parenting Instagram@Ip_parentingMIDLIFE PREGNANCY:Instagram:@arielgreenandersson

On this episode, Jamie and Emily sit down for an episode full of laughs, memories, and lessons learned regarding the idea “What is it costing you?”. Major credit for Jancee Dunn, for being the genius behind this concept in her book How Not to Hate Your Husband After Kids.  This idea can be applied to pretty much everything...especially parenting. What is it costing you when you leave the house and come home to your happy children in front of the tv? What is it costing you when dad puts the onesie on backwards? What about coming home to your newborn who has not napped all day? What could make your life easier if you actually talked about it with your partner instead of pointing the finger and initiating the argument? The ladies of NAPS talk about when it is time to bite your tongue and when it is time to  appropriately engage in a discussion and offer up a solution, in a productive manner.  Recounted by personal experiences,  Jamie and Emily show you how this concept of “What is it costing you?” impacts your everyday life, sanity, happiness, and freedom --  as a family, and as a mama. Using "escapism" to deal with an overwhelming and stressful situation, Jancee's husband left her with the bulk of the parenting responsibilities from day one, causing an enormous amount of friction to occur within their otherwise strong and wonderful marriage. Determined to resolve the issue and figure out a more balanced set of parenting tasks, Jancee went full force into research mode, talking to experts, therapists, and even a hostage negotiator to figure out how to overcome this enormous hurdle. How could they communicate their needs more effectively? How could they stop fighting in front of their child? How could they get back to being the loving, connected couple they once were? Jancee is both hilarious and relatable while telling all about her experience with what so many couples go through after kids. Her honesty is refreshing, and fits in perfectly on Marriage and Martinis. Meredith and Kaytee are back with SO many books my fingers are cramped (this is becoming a theme…). You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: family presentation at homeschool group and going into a new book completely blind. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We’ve got five current reads this week, and they are sci-fi/fantasy heavy, which is WEIRD for us! Lots of strong opinions here! How many of you saw your marriage change in some way after having kids? It may not necessarily mean a negative shift but everyone's life changes when kids come into the picture. This week I'm talking to NYT bestselling author Jancee Dunn about her book How Not To Hate Your Husband After Kids. She's sharing her humorous look at how her marriage changed when her daughter was born. We all would like to think we are highly evolved, and enlightened creatures these days. But no matter how enlightened you are, when you throw a baby bomb into a marriage crazy shit happens. I look back on the days after Channing was born and think, that wasn't so bad. But in the months, and years after, there has been a lot of WTF moments that we weren't expecting. Honestly, Chris and I don't fight, and never have. But when Channing came along, it really challenged us and our marriage. I think we navigated it pretty well and with humor, which is something Dunn says is key. Listen to this episode to hear how she and her husband navigated the new waters of parenting and came out the other side. You can find her book online as well as her other books including a book for children called I’m Afraid Your Teddy Is In Trouble Today, an essay collection that was a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor.

At thirty-eight, Lillian Curtis is content with her life. She enjoys her routine as a producer for a talk show in New York City starring showbiz veteran Vi (“short for vibrant”) Barbour, a spirited senior. Lillian’s relationship with her husband is pleasant if no longer exciting. Most nights she is more than happy to come home to her apartment and crawl into her pajamas. Then she’s hit with a piece of shocking news: Her husband wants a divorce. Blindsided, Lillian takes a leave of absence and moves back to her parents’ home in suburban New Jersey. Nestled in her childhood bedroom, where Duran Duran and Squeeze posters still cover the walls, she finds high school memories a healing salve to her troubles. She hurtles backward into her teen years, driving too fast, digging up mix tapes, and tentatively reconciling with Dawn, a childhood friend she once betrayed. Punctuating her stroll down memory lane is an invitation to the Bethel Memorial High School class of 1988 twenty-year reunion. It just might be Lillian’s chance to reconnect with her long-lost boyfriend, Christian Somers, who is expected to attend. Will it be just like heaven? Lillian discovers, as we all must, the pitfalls of glorifying the glory days, the mortification of failing as a thirtysomething adult, and the impossibility of fully recapturing the past. Don’t You Forget About Me is for anyone who looks back and wonders: What if?

Relationship tips + hilarious parenting stories. Podcast #122: New York Times best-selling author Jancee Dunn and host Ellie Knaus share the ins and outs of their relationships and compare funny notes on the home front. Dunn's new book, "How Not to Hate Your Husband After Kids," (Little, Brown and Company) is described as "part memoir of discovery, part parenting and marriage how-to, and part intriguing exploration of science that explains why we behave the way we do." We laugh about what frustrates us most about our partners in Newbornland. For example, I remember in my sleep-deprived haze telling Adam he was not allowed to sit in the driveway with his phone after work and that if he wanted to go to the bathroom right when he got home then he should use the one at the office!... (Sorry, Adam. Can't wait to be back in the thick of it with baby #2 this July!) Jancee shares communication skills she learned from an FBI hostage negotiator (for her husband, but I swear it applies to toddlers as well), and we discuss the traps of "maternal gatekeeping". If you find yourself losing your cool with your partner in front of your child, Jancee offers a powerful suggestion for calming your temper. And if you're struggling to make Quality Family Time (Q.F.T.) in this crazy age of kids sports and non-stop birthday parties, Jancee offers the guilt-free, sure-fire way to get off the hook! Yes, buckle up. We cover a lot of ground! xx Ellie Guest Bio: New York Times bestselling author Jancee Dunn is the author of five books, including "But Enough About Me", a memoir of her rock and roll years, (HarperCollins, 2008) and an essay collection, "Why Is My Mother Getting A Tattoo? Sleep-deprived and always candid, brand new second time mom Bridget enlightens Becca and Ellie as to their future of juggling young children and infants (like, who do you address first when they both want something at the same time?…how about when the older one takes the new transition out on the dog?…does motherhood foster or destroy creativity?...and last but not least, do peepee teepees actually work?). Most notably, Ellie interviews her youngest Atomic Moms guest ever: Bridget's six week old baby George. This week Shelley and Christian discuss Cyndi Lauper: A Memoir. The legendary and iconic singer, songwriter, actress and activist offers a personal account of the journey that led her to become an international superstar. After leaving her childhood home at seventeen, Cyndi took on a series of jobs: racetrack hot walker, IHOP waitress, and, as she puts it, “gal Friday the thirteenth,” as she pursued her passion for music. She worked her way up playing small gigs and broke out in 1983 with She’s So Unusual, which earned her a Grammy for Best New Artist and made her the first female artist in history to have four top-five singles on a debut album. And while global fame wasn’t always what she expected, she has remained focused on what matters most. Cyndi is a gutsy real-life heroine who has never been afraid to speak her mind and stick up for a cause—whether it’s women’s rights, gay rights, or fighting against HIV/AIDS.
