First up is Danielle Bennett, better known in the BBQ world as Diva Q. A championship competition pitmaster before launching a career as a television personality, cookbook author and brand ambassador, Diva Q will be honored on Saturday at The Royal as part of the 2024 BBQ Hall of Fame Class. She talks about her career and if she's offended by the term “female pitmaster.” As usual, she's a great interview. The next time we complain about the weather or wind or whatever when it comes to cooking outdoors, it'll be time to think of Shane Howard and Brenda Harrison. The Colorado pitmasters are blind - but return to cook their second American Royal this weekend as Blind Butt Limitless BBQ. How do they do it? It's far from a novelty act. Shane and Brenda finished 106th among 487 teams at last year's Royal and hope to do even better this time. Either way, they invited you to stop by and see them at space No. 347 and talk some Q.  We also check in with Breana Via of Smoke 'n Magic BBQ about their Royal preparation, and Skyler Spartan has the latest from The Grill Guys of Missouri. Shane joins me this week as the band gets ready for a national tour to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band's first monster hit – 'Solid Rock'. Come with me and hear the stories from that legendary guitarist JEFF 'STICK' DAVIS who has played with artists like B.B King, Al Green and countless others. 'Stick' was the founding member of that 'one-hit wonder' band, THE AMAZING RHYTHM ACES. He's actually played with them twice– once in the 70's and then again some fifteen years later. Today we find him in Florida still playing music and having fun. THE YARDBIRDS are not just one of those iconic bands from the 1960s that are still around today. They were the birth-ground, the launchpad for a hat-trick of musical legends. It's 30 years since they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame; 35 years since Eric Clapton denied he was the greatest guitarist in the world. Formed in 1963, drummer JIM MCCARTY gives us the scoop on the band then and now and admits he was just a teenie bit jealous at the instant success of The Yardbirds' descendant, LED ZEPPELIN. You know that feeling when you shoot for the stars and it sticks? Well, that's what this was.  I reached out to Steve Cadigan, he of 90,000 Tik Tok followers, countless keynote addresses and a resume so varied and and steeped in hiring royalty that you have to wonder how he finds the time. Well, he found the time and he was incredible.  Going through his life, his career and the many roles he has held with the who's who of the SIlicon Valley, he shares tales and tips about dealing with people on all rungs of the corporate ladder and helps us use those lessons in our everyday life. It was a reminder for me that if you ask, the worst they can say is "No" but the most amazing thing they can say is "Yes" and mean it.  Buckle up for an unbelieveable look into a unique and mind blowing career. Check out Steve online at stevecadigan.com, on youtube or @stevecadigan on Tik Tok.  He also has a podcast called The Work Week After Hours with Shane Howard and a book coming out in Aug 2021 called Workquake .  He has an incredible amount of material out there, all thoughtful and useful if you are in a spot where you are trying to understand interacting with others in this world. Singer/songwriter Shane Howard traveled to the heart of Australia 40 years ago and it changed his life. He had a spiritual awakening that led him to write "Solid Rock," a hit song (particularly in Australia) from his band Goanna's debut album, Spirit of Place. That song remains one of my favorite all-time song from the 1980s (and ever) and so I was eager to talk to Shane about how it came about and what it was like to be part of the Australian music scene at a very exciting time. Shane was more than gracious with his time and I enjoyed hearing his stories and discussing an album that should have been a monster not just in Australia but everywhere.  You can learn more about Goanna here. The band didn't have a long lifespan but the music is timeless and doesn't sound dated the way a lot of 80s music does. You can learn about Shane's solo work here. Shane's solo music should appeal to fans of acoustic rock, folk, or Americana. I appreciate you listening! There is one thing that a lot of men have trouble with, it is also the one thing that if left unchecked can be our most self destructive behaviour, and that is our self judgement. Most men give themselves a really hard time, with unrealistic expectations, of themselves, their relationships and what they can or cannot achieve.  But there is a way out of that toxic self generated cycle, and in todays episode we revisit the discussion Dwayne and Andrew had around Self Forgiveness as they take it further, to a deeper level in probably one of their best episodes to date. Teenagers need love too, and they also need a Dad more than ever as the boys seek to understand what being a man is really like, and girls learn to hide what's really going on behind the sweetness of Daddy's little girl. This week on the Beat Generation we take a look at the New Protest Era, focusing on the 80's and 90's. We speak with Shane Howard from Goanna and get into some Midnight Oil. The late 70's and early 80's seemed a lifetime from the atrocities of Vietnam and the Civil Rights Movement, a dim and very dark past. The artists influenced by the Beat Generation became legends and their music, inspiration for the problems that the world now faced. The Vietnam War replaced by Middle East conflict; the freedom that the children of the revolution had was replaced by anti-gay rallies; the black civil rights movement replaced by land rights issues; and the environmental crisis in the water began to impact the rest of the environment and mounted even bigger problems like holes in the ozone layer.Music had become the flag that was flown by the beat generation artists and it was up to the artists to be the voice of change.
