Guess who had a hearing, a small win and is feeling pretty good about himself? Guess again, because it is not the show's resident counsel, but in fact the illustrated man has had words, not pictures, and tells the tale. We have found more words about the AFL Meat Market, the AFLW problem, the Spring Racing Carnival and of course the dearly departed in The Deathalyser.  Musically it is underrated Aussie songs and some rippers get unearthed to enjoy their deserved moment in the sunshine. You may hear Mental as Anything, Goanna, TISM, The Easybeats and Hush in glowing terms or will it be William Shakespeare, Pussyfoot, Joe Dolce or Warwick Capper that rises like a mushroom through the fluent and effluent babble of the boys? We look at songs from a few of the major protest movements in our lifetime – racism, Vietnam, Ireland, Margaret Thatcher! From Woody Guthrie, through Springsteen and Dylan, to racism and Vietnam and the UK's  Margaret Thatcher, to present-day Australia, we look at some of the great protest songs.  Some of the stories behind those songs will take your breath away.   Our “Album You Must Hear before You Die” this time is Talking Heads' awesome “Remain in Light” from 1980.  This album has been hailed as Talking Heads' greatest statement, the last and most accomplished of the trio of albums they recorded with Brian Eno (another of our idols). Seemingly timed to coincide with our review, the live movie “Stop Making Sense” has been completely restored and is in 4K on the big screen - 40 years on!  We also talk about how Ed Kuepper achieves such a big sound in concert using a special edition Fender Stratocaster. There's sure to be stuff you didn't know here!  References:  Ed Kuepper, Fender FSR Stratocaster X, Talking Heads, “Remain in Light”, Brian Eno, “Once in a Lifetime”, “My Life in the Bush of Ghosts”, USA – Vietnam, Women's & Black rights, Woody Guthrie, Springsteen, Cisco Houston, Bob Dylan, “Hurricane”, “Eve of Destruction”, Barry McGuire, “A Change is Gonna come”, Sam Cooke, “People Get Ready”, Curtis Mayfield, Rod Stewart & Jeff Beck, “Strange Fruit”, Billie Holliday, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, NWA, Public Enemy, Buffalo Springfield / Steve Stills & Neil Young, “I Feel Like I'm fixin' to die Rag”, Country Joe and the Fish, Edwin Starr, Give Peace a Chance, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, Aretha Franklin, The Smiths, Billy Bragg, Elvis Costello, Robert Wyatt, The Cranberries, Midnight Oil, Goanna, Warumpi Band, Archie Roach Protest Playlist18,000 sing TotoKiss mass Russian GroupSmells Like Teen Spirit We Will Rick You

For over 40 years Shane Howard has established himself as one of Australia's most influential writers and singers and created a uniquely Australian voice. From the red heart, where he penned his enduring song ‘Solid Rock, Sacred Ground', to the wilds of Tasmania that gave birth to ‘Let the Franklin Flow', Howard's songs have created a new map of Australia. His songs challenge existing social paradigms and dig down into what it means to be a modern Australian. They also reach across the globe and champion the cause of the common people, the environment and the injustices of colonisation. He's played for Prime Ministers, Aboriginal Elders and Environmental campaigners, from concert halls to protest sites and remote campfires. Howard released his 14 th solo album, ‘Dark Matter' in 2020 In 2022, his legendary band, Goanna, embarked on an extensive national tour, paying homage to their classic Spirit of Place album and reigniting the Goanna spirit that championed Aboriginal rights and environmental justice in the 1980's. Howard is a respected senior statesman in Australia who continues to work as a poet, musician, writer, singer, producer and mentor. He is currently writing his autobiography.

They were the band that first appeared on Victoria's surf coast in 1977 at a time when Australians seemed ready for change. SHANE HOWARD's GOANNA wasn't alone in its quest for social and environmental justice. Bands like Midnight Oil and Redgum were calling for it too. Shane joins me this week as the band gets ready for a national tour to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band's first monster hit – 'Solid Rock'. Come with me and hear the stories from that legendary guitarist JEFF 'STICK' DAVIS who has played with artists like B.B King, Al Green and countless others. 'Stick' was the founding member of that 'one-hit wonder' band, THE AMAZING RHYTHM ACES. He's actually played with them twice– once in the 70's and then again some fifteen years later. Today we find him in Florida still playing music and having fun. THE YARDBIRDS are not just one of those iconic bands from the 1960s that are still around today. They were the birth-ground, the launchpad for a hat-trick of musical legends. It's 30 years since they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame; 35 years since Eric Clapton denied he was the greatest guitarist in the world. Formed in 1963, drummer JIM MCCARTY gives us the scoop on the band then and now and admits he was just a teenie bit jealous at the instant success of The Yardbirds' descendant, LED ZEPPELIN. Singer/songwriter Shane Howard traveled to the heart of Australia 40 years ago and it changed his life. He had a spiritual awakening that led him to write "Solid Rock," a hit song (particularly in Australia) from his band Goanna's debut album, Spirit of Place. That song remains one of my favorite all-time song from the 1980s (and ever) and so I was eager to talk to Shane about how it came about and what it was like to be part of the Australian music scene at a very exciting time. Shane was more than gracious with his time and I enjoyed hearing his stories and discussing an album that should have been a monster not just in Australia but everywhere.  You can learn more about Goanna here. The band didn't have a long lifespan but the music is timeless and doesn't sound dated the way a lot of 80s music does. You can learn about Shane's solo work here. Shane's solo music should appeal to fans of acoustic rock, folk, or Americana. I appreciate you listening! This week on the Beat Generation we take a look at the New Protest Era, focusing on the 80's and 90's. We speak with Shane Howard from Goanna and get into some Midnight Oil. The late 70's and early 80's seemed a lifetime from the atrocities of Vietnam and the Civil Rights Movement, a dim and very dark past. The artists influenced by the Beat Generation became legends and their music, inspiration for the problems that the world now faced. The Vietnam War replaced by Middle East conflict; the freedom that the children of the revolution had was replaced by anti-gay rallies; the black civil rights movement replaced by land rights issues; and the environmental crisis in the water began to impact the rest of the environment and mounted even bigger problems like holes in the ozone layer.Music had become the flag that was flown by the beat generation artists and it was up to the artists to be the voice of change. This week on The Beat Generation we take a look at songs with an environmental message. Later in the show we catch up with one of Australia's greatest environmental artists from the 1980's, Shane Howard from Goanna. While many Beat Generation artists were campaigning against the fighting in Vietnam, another war was being fought, an environmental one and it was coming from a direct attacker it was a cocktail of urban sprawl, technology, poverty and ecological disasters.
