Sheila Dvorak Galione is a writer, artist, singer, mother, healer, and intuitive coach who seeks to bring her insight and passion for the power of story to every aspect of her work. For years, Sheila supported non-profit and community organizations through grant writing and other responsibilities, but she stepped into the void to first process the passing of her sister and then clear the way for her to pursue her own work that allowed her a greater balance between work, motherhood and her health. She created Painted Pathways, a healing practice combining artistic expression, reflection, and conversation. Throughout the process, she assists others in creating a visual representation of your life, allowing you to see your strengths more clearly, and identify where you can visualize growth and change. When she's not doing this work, she's directing school plays, writing music, and performing as Sheila Dee with the band Sheila & The Deep End.The band formed in 2014 and quickly grew from performing originals and covers during dinner theater shows, to opening sets for rockabilly band Lara Hope and the Ark-tones, to headlining historic venues and clubs around the Hudson Valley, including the Rosendale Theater and Live at The Falcon, among others. She writes and performs original, evocative, old-school rock-n-roll, and her debut album “Has to Be Real” is available on all streaming platforms and features melodies that take hold in the heart, funk that moves your feet and dynamic harmonies that fill your ears.During our conversation, Sheila eloquently and authentically shares her life with us, from growing up in a musical family, to being disillusioned by Hollywood after a stint with a reality show and moving to the Hudson Valley where she reconnects with her love of music. She openly shares about the unexpected loss of her sister and how she continues to move through the grief of it all including writing music with her in mind. She recommends the podcast Quit Happens to anyone else out there looking to make the leap, and she wants to bring back the Tributon to the Hudson Valley so if you too yearn to join forces with other musicians to honor music's faves, get in touch!Today's show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.Our show music is from Shana Falana!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.org** Please: SUBSCRIBE to the pod and leave a REVIEW wherever you are listening, it helps other users FIND IThttp://iwantwhatshehas.org/podcastITUNES | SPOTIFYITUNES: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/i-want-what-she-has/id1451648361?mt=2SPOTIFY:https://open.spotify.com/show/77pmJwS2q9vTywz7Uhiyff?si=G2eYCjLjT3KltgdfA6XXCAFollow:INSTAGRAM * https://www.instagram.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast/FACEBOOK * https://www.facebook.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast

Evo Terra's Podcast Hall of Fame Speech (For Good!)

One of the ways we make podcasting better is by holding the people who work in podcasting accountable for doing better. I'm using my induction into the Podcast Hall of Fame to shine more light on that. Image courtesy of http://twitter.com/sheila_dee (Sheila Dee) In case you missed the memo, I was inducted into the https://podcasthof.com/hall-of-fame/ (Podcast Hall of Fame) last weekend. For those who don't have ~2 hours to watch the video hosted on Libsyn's account of the entire event, I've isolated out just my bit for today's episode. I talked a bit about the various perspectives of the people in podcasting. But the main thrust of my talk was about the perspective of people who are aware of podcasting but still aren't picking up what we're putting down. What do we look like to them?  It's great that https://www.edisonresearch.com/the-infinite-dial-2022/ (the diversity of podcast listeners is now nearly matching and in some cases exceeding the diversity of the overall country). But that's just listeners. Creators and service providers still over-index on the old white dude scale.  I'm doing what I can to change that by leading by example. I no longer apply to speak at podcast conferences because I don't want to force a well-meaning conference organizer to choose between me or someone from an underrepresented group to be on the stage. Someone whose ideas, work, and opinions deserve to be heard by more people. I'll speak at conferences if invited, but only after I do my homework. If (when)the headshots of other speakers aren't sufficiently diverse, I make them invite speakers from underrepresented groups. And if they refuse or are unable to comply with my request, I turn down the offer to speak. I've much the same attitude when I interact with my peers in the podcasting industry, and I don't shy away from calling my fellow old white dudes out on their bullshit or their bad behavior.  I'm not virtue signaling here. I call them out because I've been there, spewing similar bullshit or exhibiting similar bad behavior. A friend of mine once said to me, "You get away with so much because you're Evo." She was right. That wasn't good. And it's up to me to do better. I'm trying every day. And because it was an awards speech, I thanked a bunch of people, like: http://twitter.com/sheila_dee (Sheila Dee), https://www.facebook.com/michael.mennenga (Mike Mennenga) https://www.linkedin.com/in/nathanialunwin (NJ Unwin) https://twitter.com/TeeMonster (Tee Morris) https://twitter.com/markjeffrey (Mark Jeffrey) https://twitter.com/scottsigler (Scott Sigler) https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100069795018864 (Chris Miller) https://www.linkedin.com/in/timlwhite/ (Tim White) https://www.linkedin.com/in/brantsteen (Brant Steen)  https://linkedin.com/in/podcast411 (Rob Walsh) https://twitter.com/GaryLeland (Gary Leland)  https://twitter.com/jaredeasley (Jared Easley) https://twitter.com/dmfranks (Dan Franks) https://twitter.com/1LanceAnderson (Lance Anderson)  http://twitter.com/bkkgreg (Greg Jorgensen)  https://twitter.com/Global_Gaz (Ric Gazarian) https://twitter.com/alushlifemanual (Susan Schwartz) https://twitter.com/Daughterpick (Allie Press) http://twitter.com/walkersam (Sam Walker) http://twitter.com/bryanbarletta (Bryan Barletta) http://twitter.com/jamescridland (James Cridland) http://twitter.com/libsyn (Libsyn) https://www.captivate.fm/ (Captivate) https://maps.fm/ (Maps.fm) https://scribl.com/ (Scribl) the https://mobile.twitter.com/bipoccreators (BIPOC Podcast Creators) community, ... and the myriad people and companies I couldn't squeeze in. International Podcasting Day 17 Years In The Making

Podcast Pontifications

It's International Podcast Day! A day when podcasters around the globe celebrate their craft and their journey, regardless if they've been podcasting for 17 days or 17 years. Speaking of that last one… I'm going to break down the +17-year journey of one podcaster—me!—if only to prove that, for many of us, podcasting is quite a tangled path. My official entrance to podcasting started in October of 2004 with The Dragon Page. Soon after that we launched Slice of Scif, followed quickly by Wingin' It. After adding a podcast we didn't host called The Dragon Page With Class to our roster, we launched the first scifi podcast network called FarPoint Media. And it was still 2005! Parallel to all of that, I personally started working with authors to help them podcast, soon creating a network of “podiobooks”, a portmanteau of podcasting and audiobooks, if that wasn't obvious. Tha directly led to me co-authoring Podcasting For Dummies and Expert Podcasting Practices For Dummies.  parting ways with FarPoint Media in mid-2007, I launched two short-lived podcasts: Cult Cast and Found Things. You're better for not hearing either of them. And because I sometimes bet on the wrong trends, I also co-hosted Palm Fu, a podcast all about the Palm Pre smartphone, plus a podcast build on Google+ called The Books & Beer Hangout. You pays your money and you takes your chances. Some time in there, I decided the world needed more me so I did a limited run podcast called Evo at 11. A show that I'm very, very glad I pulled after 100 episodes. Apparently, I can be an asshole behind the mic. Who knew? (Kidding. I knew.)  Then my wife and I left the country, using a podcast to document our travels around the world. Then I found out it's a lot of work to produce a journalistic style podcast. But those travels led me to living in Bangkok where I became the co-host of the 2nd season of The Bangkok Podcast.  And Bangkok is where my podcast consultancy, Simpler Media, was born. I've been back in The States since 2018, and podcasting is very much what I do. Not just with Podcast Pontifications, but I also do some hired-gun hosting for RadioMD, am the editor for Sounds Profitable, and sit on the advisory board for Captivate.fm, Maps,fm, Scrib, and a few others. My wish for you on International Podcast Days is that your podcasting journey be as varied and rewarding as mine. Cheers! ----- Boostagram Corner: Thank you, Dave Jackson, for the sats boost! The Benefits To Podcasting When You're Less Critical More Often [S3E38]

Podcast Pontifications

I am a harsh critic. And I have no poker face, so you can clearly tell, either by sight or by sound, when I'm being critical. At least I used to be that way. I’m trying to be better. Specifically, I'm trying to be less critical more often. I’m trying to internalize that phrase and make it my default behavior, which is quite a challenge for me. I’m very good at triage, and that’s oftentimes a problem. With practically unlimited choices of content to consume, being able to quickly discern Things Worth My Time from Things Not Worth My Time is a handy skill. But it makes me kind of a nitpicking jerk. I'm envious of people who can just listen to a new podcast for the first time with a smile and an open mind. Me? I hit play for the first time with a wince on my face, only relaxing if I’m pleasantly surprised. As I embrace the new concept of being less critical more often, I’m changing how I listen to podcasts. In short, I'm only listening to podcasts that I enjoy. Surprisingly, that’s left me with ample time to discover new podcasts, not less. Go figure! I cut my teeth in both the podcasting world and the publishing world at the same time, so I’m as braced for disappointment with books as I am with podcasts. In an effort to being less critical more often about the materials I choose to read, I’m making better choices. As with podcasting, there are just too many books to read, so I’m staying close to some known-quantities. Podcasting areas where I excel and have been able to productize have made me quite rigid. And while that dedication to a proven process is usually seen as helpful to clients, it’s not for everyone. That's not great for business. But worse than that, it's not great for fostering creativity. Creativity for the client as well as creativity for myself. I need to grow too.  Recognizing that, I’ve done several things. One is working with a new partner (hi, Sam (https://twitter.com/walkersam)!) and am backing off of my hardline approach to my own processes and procedure. If we’ve a difference of opinion, I still voice that opinion. But unless their decision is objectively wrong, I leave the final decision to them. No one is going to bleed out over this stuff. Whatever I get, either from clients or a new podcast recommendation, I treat as a gift. Some gifts, like those given by clients, I have to find a way to work with. There’s creativity in that. Other gifts, perhaps those given by strangers who don’t know my tastes and preferences, I don’t have to love. Or even keep. I just don’t have to be an asshole about it. Most reasonable people are their own worst critics. I’m thankful I’ve spent the last 31 years with Sheila Dee (https://twitter.com/sheila_dee), who often intervenes when I’m beating myself up way too much over something way too trivial. I ignored self-care for the vast majority of existence, and I can only implore you to find someone - perhaps a professional - to help you stop the self-pummeling, either physical or mental.  Here’s the crux: Podcasting is supposed to be fun. Making content, even business-focused podcast content, should be fun. And yes, even if parts of it might get a little boring. Making a podcast is a creative process. Everybody involved in this industry, at least to some degree, is providing their own creativity. We forget that at our own peril. ----- Read the full article and share with a friend: https://podcastpontifications.com/episode/the-benefits-to-podcasting-when-youre-less-critical-more-often (https://podcastpontifications.com/episode/the-benefits-to-podcasting-when-youre-less-critical-more-often) Follow Evo on Twitter (https://twitter.com/evoterra) for more podcasting insights as they come. Podcasters Powering Through The Pandemic [Episode 288]

One of the things I'd like to do with my show is to do the occasional check-in with you, the working podcaster, trying your best to survive under conditions forced upon us by a stupid virus. And vice versa. I’ll start, and then I’ll share a couple of clips sent to me. Today, they come from Thom Rigsby from 7 Minutes In The Morning (https://www.thomrigsby.com/) . My turn first: Obviously, we're on lockdown. And by “we” I mean me, who always works the studio I’ve built in our home, as well as and my lovely wife, Sheila Dee, who’s been on Work From Home orders for a couple of weeks now. We’re both doing great, getting along just fine in close-quarters.  The less-than-great news is that we’re both presenting slightly elevated fevers. But that’s it. And yes, we have called into our local COVID19 hotline and described our symptoms, travel history, and possible exposure vectors with medical professionals. They’ve advised us to do what we're doing: quarantine at home.  So we are. We're reading to the grandkids a couple of nights a week, but via video. Much in the same way we’re staying in touch with friends and family, as well as how I stay connected with clients. Which is always the way I’ve interacted with clients, as clients of my firm are scattered around the world. Sam Waker reports lots of changes and challenges, from helping her clients struggle to grasp remote recordings, retooling shows for more frequent releases, to dealing with tiny “co-workers” who aren’t very good at respecting their boss’s need (read: their mother’s need) to get some work done. Thom Rigsby has also increased the frequency of his show, reworked the format of his program, and is helping his listeners -- mostly business owners -- not only get through the immediate pandemic, but also prepare for the bounce-back in the economy. Most encouragingly, he’s seeing an increase in downloads. Woot! I wish both Sam and Tom the best and express my thanks or sharing their thoughts. And yes, I want you to share your story with me. Send me your audio clips of how you're doing as a working podcaster. What does the pandemic mean to you? And how have you been impacted? Keep the clip to a minute or two and send it to me at evo@podcastlaunch.pro (mailto:evo@podcastlaunch.pro) . I shall be back on Monday with yet another Podcast Pontifications (https://podcastpontifications.com) .  ----- Share this with a friend: https://podcastpontifications.com/episode/podcasters-powering-through-the-pandemic (https://podcastpontifications.com/episode/podcasters-powering-through-the-pandemic) Podcast Pontifications (https://podcastpontifications.com/) is published by Evo Terra four times a week and is aimed at the working podcaster. Sheila Dee and Evo Terra are friends of mine. I met Evo in Manilla at TBEX Asia in 2016, and when I got to Bangkok a few months later, they offered me to stay with them. At that time they were living in a beautiful condo with a fantastic view of Bangkok, after traveling the world for a few years. It started as a sabbatical became an epic world-wide journey for over three years. They basically did what I did: Sold everything to explore life on the road – and (like me) they were podcasting about it. One day they got a call from their son and daughter in law telling them that they were about to become grandparents. And that made them decide that it was time to return to their home town, Phoenix, Arizona. And that's where I meet them – in their podcasting studio, that they call ShEvo Studio. In this episode, we talk about what it's been like coming back to "the first world." Together Sheila and Evo have done different podcasts. The newest is called ShEvo vs. The First World. Den nyeste hedder ShEvo vs. The First World. Evo Terra er podcast expert. Bangkok Podcast, he’s come to love a lot of things about living in Bangkok. Soon, he’ll be repatriated to the recently-made-great-again America, and things just aren’t going to be the same. In no particular order, here are 10 things Evo’s going to miss about living in Bangkok: Amazing and immediate access to healthcare Not paying $65 or more for a massage No seasons or extreme weather Having cheat codes for bad traffic (see: motorbike) Seeing the Chao Phraya river every day A pleasant income tax experience Never moving furniture Ying, the greatest housekeeper ever. (Seriously, get in touch with Evo if you need a great and reliable housekeeper!) The Skytrain/BTS … and finally, spending time with you every week as the co-host of the Bangkok Podcast. You are awesome! He’s also going to miss Love, Loathe, or Leave, his favorite segment of the show. Sticking with the love them, we’re talking about Pocky sticks and all their sugary goodness. With that, Season Two of the Bangkok Podcast comes to a close. But don’t fret! Greg and Ed will be back in just a few weeks with the Season Three. (And if you want to keep up with Evo after he’s out of Bangkok, he podcasts with his lovely wife Sheila Dee. Add him to your podcatcher now!) What do pro Western teachers think about teaching in Thailand? And are we seeing the end of Uber in Bangkok? And if so, will canal taxis pick up the slack? All that and more on this episode of The Bangkok Podcast Taxis in Bangkok would probably make for a good Love, Loathe, or Leave segment, but recent moves by Thailand to restrict popular “ridesharing” services make it worthy of our opening banter. After that, Greg has a chat with Sheila Dee a Western-trained, professional educator working in Thailand. There are lots of Westerners acting as English teachers in Thailand. Greg used to be one of them. But Sheila’s a bit different, holding a Bachelor's degree in elementary education and a Master’s degree in curriculum and instruction. In the Thai private school where she teaches, five subjects -- English, Math, Science, Physical Education, and Computers -- are taught by native English teachers. Social studies and Thai (as in the language) are taught in Thai, and her students also study Chinese (actually in Chinese, if that’s not obvious). For her school as well as the many international schools in Bangkok, that level of immersion and integration requires educators trained in their subject field, not just someone who happens to be a native English-speaker. As a Western trained teacher, Sheila’s learning how to modify her style. As an American teacher, she knows how to deal with American students. But not all of that directly translates to teaching in Thailand, with different expectations from administration, parents, and students. Some of those are a net positive, like the premium administration places on Western teachers and the noticeable lack of discipline issues, for example. But some require her to change her expectations, like translating the concept of “saving face” into classroom management and not trying to “fix” everything. It’s not easy being a teacher, which is why Thailand is starting to change how they look for teachers. Yes, there are still plenty of teachers with a degree in something (anything) and a TEFL certificate. However, Sheila’s seeing an emphasis on seeking out real teachers (like her) with real experience of prior teaching in the Western world. Love, Loathe, or Leave? It’s our first listener submission! ThailightZone wants us to talk about the khlong boats, specifically those that shuttle busy commuters along the saen saep canal. It’s a uniquely local Thai experience, but you’ll have to listen to see how we feel about this odd transportation style. Want more? Greetings one and all to another show from Bangkok, Thailand. We’re now in our third month living as expats and couldn’t be happier. Well, I mean… We probably could be if more people signed up to get a postcard from us each month, but we’re pretty happy. We share two other stories on today’s program, one from Thailand and another from Taiwan: 1. Dirty Thai Massage Secrets Music credit: Upbeat Forever by Kevin MacLeod Spoiler alert: While it is possible to have one of those massages in Thailand -- you know, just like it’s possible everywhere -- we’ve not had the opportunity. And we’ve had a lot of massages. So before you assume that the Asian massage place on the corner is just a front for a prostitution ring, you might want to hear what we have to say. 2. Taiwan Two-Wheel Terror Music credit: Tutorial 0 by Kevin MacLeod What’s with the clickbait titles today, Evo? Sheesh. It’s not like the story April from Wisdom Trails tells about her experience on a motorbike in Taiwan is that much different from any other Asian motorbike experience. Because let’s face it: these people are trying to kill us all. By motorbike! And that’s the show! In case you didn’t get the hint: we really want your travel story. So please,  drop us a line (mailto:evo@shevo.wtf) ! Apparently you like having our interesting tales of life in Thailand intermixed with fun travel stories from others, so let’s keep it going! Special thanks to  Kevin MacLeod of Incompetech.com (http://incompetech.com/)  for our theme music Upbeat Forever and all of the music used in this episode. “When something looks interesting on the horizon, I want to check it out.”   Evo Terra, a well known digital strategist, speaker and podcaster wanted to see what life was like as a world traveler.  He and his wife, Sheila Dee, made the decision in late 2014 to sell just about everything — including their house — and hit the road. They describe the journey as both amazing and complicated.   “Our entire lives, for all of 2015, were in two suitcases that we brought with us.  You are literally packing up your life.”   The two started documenting their journey on the site, The Opportunistic Travelers. Terra, with a long background in digital strategy and content marketing, says he is easily bored.  He realized this early on in his career when he found himself restless and unhappy with his job.  At the time, Terra says, he worried about walking away because he was working for a great company. When he asked for advice, one of his mentors told him not to worry because “there are lots of great companies out there.”  Those words stuck with Terra who realized that being adventurous and innovative was paramount.   He is lucky enough to share a partner in life that has “itchy feet”. At first, the couple considered this adventure a sabbatical, not necessarily a way to make money.  But when you are an entrepreneur, you find ways to create opportunity.  Evo Terra and Dee are now telling their story — blogging and podcasting — on behalf of others in the tourism and travel industry who are looking for exposure.   “When you need to reach people with a message, whether you are a large brand, a blogger, or a presidential candidate, people want to be entertained, but also want a good quality story,” Terra says.  “Do you have a story worth telling?” Terra and Dee sure do.  It's a story that continues to unfold as they make Bangkok, Thailand their home for 2016.   Dee, a professor and photographer, shares her husband's sense of adventure and willingness to let life unfold without a roadmap.   While the couple enjoyed living in Phoenix, Arizona for 18 years, they say they don't miss their house, or any of their “stuff”.  Terra and Dee realized there was so much of the world they hadn't seen.  After their son graduated from college, opportunity to explore the unknown presented itself. “We are not very risk averse people.  We just want to experience more things.” The post The Opportunistic Travelers: Phoenix Couple Turns Travel Into a Full-Time Gig appeared first on Inspired Media 360 TV - Inform | Inspire | Engage.

So often we see examples of people who don’t travel simply because they wont permit themselves to. In this day and age many people have jobs that will let them hit the road – two such examples are Evo Terra and Sheila Dee. Evo’s work as a digital strategist (and Sheila’s as an instructional designer) gives them complete freedom to work from anywhere, and with their child now of adult age they saw no reason to stay at home. In January 2015 they headed off covering much of Western Europe before heading down under via Thailand, China and Vietnam. We caught up with them in Australia where they shared their definition of what opportunistic travel is all about. As part of their strategy the two don’t rely on any one source of income, running their own podcast and receiving funds through their crowdfunding site on Patreon where they offer supporters postcards in return for patronage. You can follow their journey, listen to their podcast and support their postcards at www.shevo.wtf  What I learned from talking with Evo and Sheila: They have been inventive with their income sources using crowdfunding site Patreon to offer postcards from their journey in return for a monthly contribution. Although having only started this year they are already achieving over $300 per month from the site – enough to feed them for a month in many countries. Skyscanner is a big favorite for Sheila’s flight planning and the couple like to specialize in hunting out the flights that others won’t take. Work like your internet won’t last. Being digitally dependent can cause difficulties if you have tight deadlines and a poor signal. Don’t put yourself in the position of relying on the internet at the last minute. You really don’t need stuff – as Sheila says why would 2 people need 3 televisions! Cutting things out of your life won’t deprive you of what really matters – the experiences that define your life. Despite events that have happened overseas – in some cases around the same time that they were visiting the countries, both Evo and Sheila are very conscious of how the media can make events seem bigger and more dangerous than they are. Tragedies do happen, and you need to be wary, but they have not felt unsafe at any stage of their adventures on the road.

SHE: Thank you so much for staying subscribed to the show during our break. We really enjoyed producing these mini episodes, but we're really looking forward to sharing with you the outstanding content we've been collecting the last few months. EVO: November 3rd -- hey, that's my mom's birthday. Happy birthday, Mom! -- is when Season Two starts, and the show goes back to the way it was. Sort of. We're making some changes that hopefully, you won't notice, all designed to make the show that much more enjoyable every week. SHE: On this episode, we're going back to the beginning. Before that, actually, back in November, when we'd made the decision to leave but really had no idea where we were going. We talked about our fears during a road trip to San Diego. [fears] SHE: Getting sick? Check. Four doctor visits. Lost grandparents? Check.  EVO: Making money on the road? Semi-check. Still working on that, and we're still looking for Chapter Next, which hopefully extends our travels. SHE: Again, thanks for sticking with us. Full Show Script EVO: I'm going to apologize now. If you're squeamish about bats, this unreleased clip from our travels in Thailand is going to freak you all the way out.  SHE: He's not joking. About 50 kilometers north of Ranong is Phra Khayang, or just the Bat Cave. I know what you're thinking: All caves have bats. True. But this cave -- which you walk through unsupervised -- lets you get up close and personal with the flying mammals. You were warned. [Bat cave] EVO: Now assuming that didn't cost us all of our listeners, thanks again for sticking with us while we're on season break. We'll be back next week with another mini-episode. And our regular episodes will resume in the fall. Cheers from... wherever we are. Which is probably Hong Kong, by now. SHE: Funding for our endless world tour is provided, oddly enough, by postcards. EVO: Give us five bucks, and we'll send you a postcard from our travels abroad every single month. Get on the list at ShEvo.wtf/postcards.  SHE: And we save a ton of money by housesitting. It's free and beats living in hotels. Want super cool people like us looking after your pets and property while you're traveling? Visit ShEvo.wtf/stayforfree to register, either as a housesitter or a home owner. We do it, and we love it! Thanks for listening to this episode. I’m Sheila Dee.  EVO: And I am Evo Terra. Full Show Script EVO: Hey, thanks for hanging in there with us as we're in between seasons. This week, we're taking you back about a month with an another un-aired clip from our adventures in Thailand, where we've been the last 3 months.  SHE: We half expected our quick trip to Phuket in July to be not all that much different than the time we'd spent in Ranong. We were pretty wrong about that, as you'll hear in this conversation we recorded in a bar near Karon Beach: [Phuket caucazoids] EVO: Just calling it like I see it, baby. And those Russians were really white! Cheers from Thailand! SHE: Funding for our endless world tour is provided, oddly enough, by postcards. Full Show Script EVO: Our travel itinerary over the next few months is going to be a little on the crazy side, with a half dozen countries on our agenda. That doesn't leave us a lot of time to be stationary and produce a new quality episode for you each week. Instead, we're going to focus on capturing content. Content we'll share with you as part of the second season of The Opportunistic Travelers Podcast this fall. SHE: But don't worry: We're not leaving you without weekly content. And we're not re-running old episodes. We've collected lots of audio over the last seven months (holy shit, seven months) that hasn't made it on our weekly show, simply due to our self-imposted time limit. EVO: Starting in about 30 seconds, you'll get one previously unreleased clip from our past experiences, and then we'll end the episode. And that will continue every week until we come back with full episodes in the fall. SHE: Like this one, that showcases how Thai people keep their beer from going hot. Trigger warning, craft beer nerds: This one will hurt your soul a little. [Literally ice cold beer] EVO: But of course we couldn't leave Thailand without trying it the way they drink it. Yep. Watered down beer. Well, even more so than Singah normally resembles watered down beer. Ice just makes it colder and wetter, which is strange to say but kinda works. Cheers from Thailand! SHE: Funding for our endless world tour is provided, oddly enough, by postcards. EVO: Give us five bucks, and we'll send you a hand-written postcard from our travels abroad every single month. Full Show Script [six month slump] SHE: Hold on. Before we start the show: two things. EVO: First, a HUGE thanks to Jessica, Rocco, JP, Jeff, Don, & Mica for recently signing up to get a post card from us each month. It's really the only way this show brings in income (and we're going to talk about income today), so we greatly appreciate your pledges. For the rest of you lot now feeling guilty, ShEvo.wtf/postcards is where you can sign up. Ya cheap bastards. SHE: Second, this episode is going to be a little... weird. It's probably not the best experience for first time listeners. Maybe try the one with us riding in the back of the police truck in Thailand, or our beer walking tour in Spain. Once you know the kind of show we produce, come back and listen to this episode. It'll make more sense.  EVO: Can we let Patrick do his thing now? SHE: By all means. [intro] EVO: So yeah. Weird. As you heard, it's been six months, almost to the day, since we took off and left damn near everything -- and everyone -- behind for what we hoped to be the start of a lifetime of travel. But a lifetime is a mighty long time. Is it working? [what does success look like] SHE: Told you it would be a weird show. But Evo's right. Our numbers are flat on... just about everything. Maybe it's the summer. Maybe it's that our content is vastly different than what people expect. Maybe we just need to wait a little longer for our stuff to reach more of the right people. EVO: But that doesn't mean we're not enjoying the living abroad lifestyle. [enjoying things] SHE: Sadly, we still don't live in a post-scarcity world and everyone -- even us -- has to worry about money. More so us, because we've ignored it for the better part of six months.  EVO: The trick, and our newfound area of concentration, will be figuring out how to make money and keep doing the things -- and producing the content -- that keeps our primary audience happy. [litmus test] EVO: Spend time doing the things we want to be doing. Ok, so that's not really much of a revelation. But it was good for us to say it out loud and to each other. I'll spare you the hour-plus audio debate of what we do and do not like producing and just leave you with this: Expect some changes. SHE: Changes to our content. Changes in our focus. And of course, changes of our scenery. EVO: What won't change is our commitment to each other and our commitment to complete the year abroad we'd planned.  SHE: Planned. That's a nice word. Maybe, we should have done that around this time last year? EVO: Yeah... maybe. Hey, here's an idea. Let's get the hell out of here for a few days. SHE: OK. I hear Phuket's nice this time of year. EVO: Nowhere in southern Thailand is nice this time of year, but I appreciate you trying to make me feel better. SHE: Anything for you, baby. EVO: We'll be back next week. Probably. And we'll probably feel better. Probably. Normally I'd say "cheers" here. Still not feeling very cheers-y. So... yeah. SHE: Funding for our endless world tour is provided, oddly enough, by postcards. EVO: Give us five bucks, and we'll send you a hand-written postcard from our travels abroad every single month. Full Show Script EVO: We're in Costa Brava, a beautiful beachside area just outside of Barcelona, Spain. We've been attending the TBEX Europe conference all week, and have been recording lots of audio to bring to you on future shows. Seriously. We've got some great stuff here.  SHE: This week, we bring you a special musical edition, featuring a range of street musicians we've recorded during our travels. These are the actual recordings of the musicians on the street, not ripped from their CDs.  EVO: The idea first came to me in Brussels, where I recorded this sax player on the street as Sheila was popping in and out of stores. Yes, he knew we were recording. And I tipped him, too. In fact, we make sure to tip all the performers, and make sure they know that we're recording. No international incidents, especially over copyright.  [Brussels sax] EVO: We found this accordion player outside the Sheffield, England train station. He's featured in one of Sheila's One Minute Memories videos, but the audio quality is a little better here. I'm pretty sure he's singing in Italian, but I assure you... we were in England when I recorded him. [Sheffield accordion] SHE: Santiago de Compostela in Spain is the hotspot for street musicians. There's a large university here, and it gets plenty of foot traffic from tourists thanks to the locals. So while a harp and upright bass probably aren't all that typical in your town, they're not all that out of place here.  [Santiago harp & bass] EVO: And where there are students, there's always someone trying out something new. Like the hand drum that looks like a ufo. Hang, HAPI, hand pan... it goes by many different names. I like the sound, but I'm afraid that it will all to quickly become as overdone Peruvian pan flutes. Anyhow this kid drew a pretty big crowd as his flitted across the surface of his drum. [Santiago hang] SHE: And if that wasn't hippy enough for you, how about a Lute? At least we think it was a lute. Could have been a Mandolin. If your recognize and know the name of the instrument, let us know. Whatever it's called, it makes a lovely and quite worldly sound. [Lute]  EVO: You may be wondering why we haven't included any Spanish music. Well... we're in Galicia. Yes, it's part of Spain, but it was a Celtic "nation" long before that. Broaden your musical horizons, my friends. And don't call what you're about to hear bagpipes.  [Galician gaita] SHE: That's a galician gaita, which I'm probably not pronouncing correctly. It's a very traditional instrument, and you can hear the sound drifting in and out of the streets and passage ways all day in Santiago.  EVO: So far, that's the extent of the instrumental music we've collected. We've got a fair amount of singer/songwriters stuff from the various pubs we find ourselves in. If you liked this musical interlude, let me know. And if you want any parts of it, let me know. I've already sent one off to Marc from the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast, just because he asked nicely. Cheers from Costa Brava! SHE: We travel the world as The Opportunistic Travelers largely because of our generous listeners. EVO: People all over the world pledge as little as five bucks a month, and in return, they get a hand-written postcard from us sent from wherever opportunity has taken us, every single month. Sign up today at TheOpportunisticTravelers.com/postcards. SHE: We also stay for free most of our journey. No, we’re not super-stars or anything. We eliminate hotel costs and stay in some great cities by housesitting all over the world. Get our complete list of the actual housesitting sites we use every day at TheOpportunisticTravelers.com/stayforfree, and stop spending money on hotels when you travel, too. This is ARealGirl, and we’re back with another round with Evo Terra, founder of Podiobooks.com, and Sheila Dee, author of THE ROOKIE Curriculum Guide. They helped get another show pre-recorded so I’d have time to recover. How’s my tonsillectomy recovery going? Well … slowly, I guess. Seems I’m doing fine, and I mostly feel okay. That is, until I have to swallow. For any reason. That stinks all the stink. But otherwise things are good. Today I even ate solid food for the first time since last Thursday! This ‘cast is all about the Empty Set origin story — just how did Scott & A come to work together, anyway? And we throw in the Podiobooks origin story as well: you’ve used it, you know you have, so how did that come to be? It was, as I mentioned last week, awesome and fun to have “SheVo” at Empty Set for the weekend. Big thanks for those who shared their irrational fears last week! It was super fun to look forward to, and I’m still as perplexed and fascinated as ever at how humans behave.

On this week’s FridayFix we’re lucky to have our good friends Evo Terra and Sheila Dee join us. They came to San Diego for a visit, and sat down to talk irrational fears. Why, you ask? This was recorded last weekend, and yesterday I had a tonsillectomy. It went well, straightforward with no complications, but back on Saturday night, I didn’t know all of that. I just knew I was scared with some reasonable fears, and some … less so. So listen first, then cheer me up by telling me about yourirrational fears in the comments section! I promise to check in obsessively in the few hours a day I’m not sleeping a drug fueled sleep after fighting to swallow as little as possible and still stay hydrated. Also, we discuss chugging mouthwash, puberty, George Burns impressions, Angry Trivial Pursuit™, DEATHRACE 2000 (not 3000), your constitutional right to go topless, anti-boobie laws, giant fucking spiders, and the worst nightmare Scott has ever had.
