Check our her Face Book and Instagram as well for thoughtful reflections and quotes on this theme.Winner of the Internationl Association for Jungian Studies (IAJS) Book Award for Best Clinical Book 2021The Absent Father Effect on Daughters investigates the impact of absent – physically or emotionally – and inadequate fathers on the lives and psyches of their daughters through the perspective of Jungian analytical psychology. This book tells the stories of daughters who describe the insecurity of self, the splintering and disintegration of the personality, and the silencing of voice.Issues of fathers and daughters reach to the intra-psychic depths and archetypal roots, to issues of self and culture, both personal and collective. Susan E. Schwartz illustrates the maladies and disappointments of daughters who lack a father figure and incorporates clinical examples describing how daughters can break out of idealizations, betrayals, abandonments and losses to move towards repair and renewal. The book takes an interdisciplinary approach, expanding and elucidating Jungian concepts through dreams, personal stories, fairy tales and the poetry of Sylvia Plath, along with psychoanalytic theory, including Andre Green's ‘dead father effect' and Julia Kristeva's theories on women and the body as abject.Examining daughters both personally and collectively affected by the lack of a father, The Absent Father Effect on Daughters is highly relevant for those wanting to understand the complex dynamics of daughters and fathers to become their authentic selves. It will be essential reading for anyone seeking understanding, analytical and depth psychologists, other therapy professionals, academics and students with Jungian and post-Jungian interests.https://susanschwartzphd.com/___https://dadspace.camusic provided by Blue Dot SessionsSong: The Big Ten https://app.sessions.blue/browse/track/258270

I've had a number of guests on this show speaking about leadership. A large part of this is that I'm very interested in the subject. But I also feel that this is a skill set that is often neglected in the legal profession. As lawyers, we learn a lot about our craft in law school and even more once we are in practice. As professionals, we are taught to analyze the law and help our clients to identify legal risks. Our job is to be skeptical and to apply dispassionate reasoning to the situation so that our clients can protect themselves from legal exposure and comply with the law. We work to get our clients the best possible outcome whether it is in a litigation matter or in a corporate or real estate deal. We help our clients to achieve their personal or business objectives in a way that avoids legal risk or accomplishes their legal objectives. But the same skills that we cultivate in practicing law can interfere with our ability to be an effective leader. Whether you are a managing partner, a practice group leader, running your own law firm, serving as a general counsel, or managing other members of the legal team as an assistant general counsel, you need a different skill set to be successful. In particular, emotional intelligence is one skill that you need to cultivate in order to be successful in a leadership role. In this episode, Susan Schwartz provides great insights on that subject. Susan Schwartz is a leadership coach and management consultant. She equips technical experts and teams with the skills they need to become excellent leaders. Her tagline is : Transforming expert professionals into emotionally intelligent leaders. Is there any hope for authenticity? Today we speak with Jungian analyst Susan Schwartz who describes her work on the imposter syndrome and the fragility of the self. Dr. Schwartz starts out by describing how much energy our inauthenticity takes and yet we often are taught early to conform and deny ourselves. To learn to be more in tune with your inner impulses, Susan recommends starting to pay attention to Aha moments in waking life. While talking about the symbology of up vs down, Susan touches on what she calls the value of depression as well as the differences between persona and shadow. In the second half, we get into a conversation about ageism and western views of aging and how we might go about finding a purpose beyond having a job and raising kids. We end by talking about finding a sense of belonging. BIO: Susan E. Schwartz, PhD trained in Zurich as a Jungian analyst and is also a clinical psychologist. She presents in the US and worldwide. In my latest interview with Susan Schwartz, we talked about her latest book: Imposter Syndrome and The As-If Personality. We discussed the importance of being real and what that actually means in the world of social media, and how do we navigate our way through the confusion to find ourselves again. No matter how successful a person might be, it seems that a large majority of us would confess to feeling like a fraud. But for some people, their fear is so great that they're unable to bring their true selves forward and resign themselves to living a lie. I hope you will enjoy this episode as much as I did. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/shari26/message

Be emotionally intelligent to lead motivated teams When you lead, you can't be the smartest person in the room Episode 126 (Susan is based in San Francisco) In this conversation with Susan Schwartz, we explore: Making the transition from star performer to team leader Developing an insider code when working with different personality types The difference between emotional intelligence and emotionally intelligent When technical expertise encounters the challenge of leadership Building the team by delegating responsibilities and developing skills The leaders' dirty little secret about leading About Susan Schwartz: Susan is author of, Creating a Greater Whole: A Project Manager's Guide to Becoming a Leader. It's the main textbook for a Project Management Communication course at Georgetown University. Susan developed an Expert to Excellence leadership program that uses practical, measurable Emotional Intelligence methods that help people understand intangible leadership skills and create tangible action plans Learn more about Susan and her programs at expertisetoexcellence.me ------ Excerpts from this conversation with Susan Schwartz Emotional intelligence is about observations and behaviors ----- And what happens when a technical person is promoted for their expertise. And all those years, they spent honing that knowledge. They've had a mindset, that's all about them. What is their expertise, people come to them. They are the expert. When you get promoted to be a manager or a leadership role, all of a sudden, it's not about you. It's about them. And that's awfully scary because your performance evaluation is not based on what you achieved. Your performance evaluation is based on what the people who work with you or for you, and perhaps even partners outside of your company. So you have to really start paying attention to them ----- 07:00 Right. And you've got to delegate. That's perhaps the one of two most important skills because you're so busy doing their job, you can't do your job till after five o'clock. You can't get promoted if you're busy doing your people's work, because you are so very important. And nobody else can do what you can do. That can't possibly promote you, because you're too valuable in your current role. 07:31 And I heard of a pearl of wisdom there that I want to repeat for people, if you are a leader, a team leader, a manager, if you're the only one that can do the job, then you aren't doing your job. If you're the only one who can do what it is that your your department your team delivers, then you're really not doing it properly. Because you're not the manager, you think you're still the star. And your success is dependent on their success. And so that comes back to you have to start being open, and realize that your success is by giving people professional development, helping them grow. And that's the second piece of the puzzle. And this is why I love the name of your podcast is these new, expert knowledge experts transforming to leadership role, sometimes have difficulty assuring that the message they intended is received as they intended. And because how often I've done it a lot of you sure you've done it altogether. That's not what I meant. And it still happens to me today. And it's not what I meant. Because you you just made an assumption that they think exactly like you think. So if you're explaining it in your terms, of course they should know it. And then you end up getting frustrated doing it yourself. And then people leave, because they're just humiliated. They think they're stupid. And then because you're not your message isn't being received as you intended. And you get frustrated because they're not smart enough or fast enough. So then you take it back and you do it yourself. ----- ----more---- Your Intended Message is the podcast about how you can boost your career and business success by improving your communication skills.
