About: Rotator is a drone project based around combinations of delay, reverb, resonance and feedback. I've had a long-running fascination with taking simple sound sources - analog oscillators, tuned percussion, plucked strings - passing them through combinations of effects - filters, resonators, delays, reverb - then taking those altered sounds and mixing them back in with themselves. This feedback loop keeps the rhythmic, melodic and harmonic content of the input but adds its own musicality to the output. It continually builds on and modifies the original so the final result is something new and hopefully more than just the sum of its own parts. I don't have a clear set of musical influences for this - it's as much about my love of the saturated sounds of tape delays from Jamaican Dub originators like King Tubby as it is about the concepts behind Emptyset's location-based works or any of the more obvious drone, ambient and electronica references. None of these ideas or techniques are new - but I hope my interpretation and implementation of them brings something worthwhile. This piece was originally recorded live using a small modular rig and is based around the individual outputs of a single analogue oscillator. The recording has had some basic post-production but it's essentially presented as it was performed. - Justin Owen aka Rotator Links: https://rrrotatorrr.bandcamp.com https://soundcloud.com/rrrotatorrr

Tiny Mix Tapes | Chocolate Grinder Mixes

To listen to ZULI's We Are All Anemic mix is to be confronted by decay. Sliding across an arid terrain, its sounds move, but with a momentum that is staggered, labored. The force of entropy is taking hold. Rough trenches wound its territory, their depths unthinkable. In the air whorl clouds of sonic debris: old computers, satellite parts, strange alloys. Across an hour of sound, we toggle between depth and surface, contemplation and distraction interwoven in noise, bearing witness to a fading geography. I first listened to ZULI's mix on a train to Glasgow. In the city, I listened to Denise Ferreira da Silva talk quantum physics and Leibniz's concept of the plenum. She wondered how we could come to perceive the world otherwise, how we could loosen the constraints of coloniality, its ways of knowing and being. I wondered: could listening — hearing — provide us with a way out? Does sound not move us away from the concept? When we listen to ZULI's mix, do we need to know? Or can we not simply enter into its moods, inhabit its structures, and leave with our perceptions altered? In Glasgow, I heard Fred Moten and Nathaniel Mackey talk about debris and decay as a way of getting out from what keeps us under. They wanted an aesthetic of breakage, against wholeness. They want to register history as the sounding of decay, or decay as the sound of history. No smooth lines, but jaggedness, wear and tear. In From a Broken Bottle Traces of Perfume Still Emanate, his epistolary novel, whose interlocutor he names "Angel of Dust," Mackey writes: Dear Angel of Dust, I'm enclosing a tape of my latest composition. I call it "Not of Rock, Not of Wood, Not of Earth" and (here you can say you told me so again) I got the inspiration for it from the work of an artist named Petlin who works in pastels. I saw a canvas of his at the house of a friend not too long ago and was instantly struck by how he manages to make texture constitute itself of its own erosion, infuses color with a certain aura of captured ruin. It seemed he'd worked the powderiness of the medium so as to have it collapse into a capacity for infiltration, that a spectral choir of massed incursions chromatically cloaked itself in vows, in conceptual hoods of deprivation. I was surprised to find myself so moved (and moved to music no less), especially in light of my letter to you a few months back. But what I saw to be the tactile or coloristic counterpart of hoarseness proposed a scratchiness of voice, a self-seeding smudge with overtones of erasure as a possible arc along which our music might pass. I tend to pursue resonance rather than resolution, so I glimpsed a stubborn, albeit improbable world whose arrested glimmer elicited slippages of hieratic drift. A new series delving into the influences of British-South Asian artists. Curated and hosted by Imran Perretta. For the first event, Imran was in conversation Paul Purgas, a multidisciplinary artist working with sound, performance and installation. Paul is also one half of Emptyset, a London/Berlin based production project formed in 2005 with James Ginzburg. The Listening Party series brings together an array of artists and musicians, each exploring the unique sonic and visual cultures that underpin their practice. In conversation with Somerset House Studios resident, Imran Perretta, the artists will explore their deepest cuts, from music videos obsessions to unreleased album tracks, each meditating on the influences that have shaped their identity and their creative output. Author of Red Rising trilogy talks writing process, screenplays, Hollywood, and being an "overnight success" Pierce Brown’s first novel RED RISING was a smash hit. While touring to support GOLDEN SON, the second book in that series, Pierce visited the Empty Set studios to talk about his books, his career, and to answer questions sent in by his fans. Scott already reviewed the book, but with Pierce in town, we wanted to jibber-jab to entertain your faces. If you’re a creative type, this is a great interview for ya. Even for someone who hits it out of the park with a “first novel,” there is much work to be done if you want to succeed.

Been poking around the Empty Set store this Black Friday?  If you have, and you’re looking for swank GFL t-shirts, you might notice our selections are dwindling. We’ve had a few emails and comments lately about how there are slim pickings in the store as far as t-shirt sizes go, and I don’t disagree. That said, several folks notice that there are only smalls and mediums of some t-shirts, and think we’re discriminating against folks of a different size.  That’s where I disagree of course.  Take a few moments and listen to this ultra short Friday Fix to see when, if, and how you can get new GFL gear in whatever size you want. Just, maybe, not in time for Christmas.

This is ARealGirl, and we’re back with another round with Evo Terra, founder of Podiobooks.com, and Sheila Dee, author of THE ROOKIE Curriculum Guide. They helped get another show pre-recorded so I’d have time to recover. How’s my tonsillectomy recovery going? Well … slowly, I guess. Seems I’m doing fine, and I mostly feel okay. That is, until I have to swallow. For any reason. That stinks all the stink. But otherwise things are good. Today I even ate solid food for the first time since last Thursday! This ‘cast is all about the Empty Set origin story — just how did Scott & A come to work together, anyway? And we throw in the Podiobooks origin story as well: you’ve used it, you know you have, so how did that come to be? It was, as I mentioned last week, awesome and fun to have “SheVo” at Empty Set for the weekend. Big thanks for those who shared their irrational fears last week! It was super fun to look forward to, and I’m still as perplexed and fascinated as ever at how humans behave.

We’re back with another edition of Inside Empty Set, where we talk about things pertinent to the business side of our business. Big news today: Sigler is moving to San Diego! That’s right, the Future Dark Øverlord is moving to America’s Finest City, and Empty Set Entertainment will coalesce into one shiny office! This audio was recorded the day before we found new office space, so there’s still some “maybe” in the discussion. As of today, the ink is dry and the move is set. Emptyset was born in 2005 when James 'Ginz' Ginzburg (30Hz, Joker collaborator, and co-founder of Tectonic Recordings) met art curator and DJ Paul Purgas (the man behind last year's excellent We Can Elude Control release) through Bristol's music scene.   The duo embarked on a production project to explore their musical commonalities, such as low frequencies, sound design and rhythm. The results — a nervous-sounding strain of minimal techno, fortified by bone-rattling subbass — first surfaced in 2007 with a pair of sought-after EPs for Future Days. A third EP appeared on Julian Smith's Caravan Recordings in 2008, paving the way for the label to release Emptyset's eponymously titled debut album last month.   Clocking in at just over 37 minutes, the album is a buzzing opus of lumbering rhythms, creeping distortion, bleeps, hums and warm bass tones. 'We wanted to create situations where the music came alive from its own side by finding the points within signal chains where distortion begins to form before it overpowers', they explain of the album in an interview over at Sonic Router.   This mix pulls together some of Emptyset's reference points, from the glitch-ridden electronics of Alva Noto and classic minimalism of Richie Hawtin's Plastikman material to emotive Aphex acid and the advanced techno/dubstep workouts of 2562.   Emptyset have a stack of projects lined up for 2010, including a series of live techno recordings made in a haunted house (!) — watch this space...   Tracklisting: Byetone - Plastic Star (Alva Noto remix) MLZ - New Analogue Century Hauntologists - Hauntologists 2 Carl Craig & Moritz Von Oswald - Recomposed Substance - Relish (Shed remix) 2562 - Love in Outer Space Emptyset - Seclusion Peverelist - Clunk Click Every Trip Bogger - Wireblock 002 AFX - Analord 8 Plastikman - Freek Jeff Mills - Expanded A Made Up Sound - On & On Move D - Workshop 002 Craig Smith & The Revenge - Soul Part II Blake Baxter - Derise Me October - Homo Sapiens Jammin Gerald - Black Women Demdike Stare - Ghostly Hardware Radioslave - Tantakatan Seldom Felt - Seldom Felt 5 Santos - Beat the Knuckles 2562 - Circulate Sleeparchive - Hospital 02 Underground Resistance - X101 Pole - Steingarten (Shackleton remix)  ^ Emptyset's debut album is out now on Caravan Recordings

For some years now, Bristol's under_score crew have been flying the flag for deep techno flavours in the city, putting on parties with guests such as Sleeparchive, Claro Intelecto and Errorsmith, and showing plenty of love too for the dubstep/techno crossover currently blossoming (Bristol pioneer Pinch performed at under_score alongside Manchester's Andy Stott earlier this year).   High quality guests aside, under_score's position on the local scene has been firmly cemented by way of core residents Microman (aka one half of Emptyset), Luke Malcher and Jim Petherwick — and Jim has kindly put together this exclusive mix for Spannered, which gives an excellent introduction to the under_score sound.   Tracklisting: Tony Allen — Ole (Moritz von Oswald remix) Claude Vonstroke — Who's Afraid of Detroit? (Deepchord Remix) Model 500 — Starlight Luciano — Fourges et Sabres Maurizio — Domina Substance & Vainqueur — Immersion (Sleeparchive Remix) Sleeparchive — Research Henry & Louis — Answer (DJ Pinch Remix) Lowtec — Workshop 1 side A (untitled) Baby Ford & Zip — No Milk Today T++ — Space Break 2562 — Circulate Rhythm & Sound — Poor People Must Work (Carl Craig Remix) Heartthrob — Gollum Rhythm & Sound w/ Shalom — We Been Troddin   ^ You can catch the under_score crew in action at the Blue Mountain Club, Bristol, on 22 September, with Baby Ford and Raudive (aka Oliver Ho) headlining.
