May you live in interesting times - as the proverb goes. Will those times continue? On October 16th, at the Yale Club in New York City, we held our latest Live Event hosted by ITFA with additional sponsorship from Brown Brothers Harriman, Goba Capital and HC Group. The commodities sector has seen unprecedented volatility. What has that meant for the sector's ecosystem? How has it shaped the opportunities and risks? Is the volatility structural or ephemeral? A group of leaders from across the sector joined our panel to discuss in front of an audience of 150 industry participants. Rob Walsh, CEO of IMI, William Tully,Head of Business Development, BBH Commodities & Logistics, Sunil George, Head of Client Financing Solutions for the Americas at Louis Dreyfus Company, Todd Lynady, Regional Head of Financial Solutions @ WTW and Alexandre Lacreu Chief Underwriting Officer, Coface North America moderated by podcast host Paul Chapman.
A 2024 Goldman Sachs survey found that 77% of small businesses were concerned about their ability to access capital. In addition, in 2023, a majority of small business owners had to tap into their personal funds or use cash reserves to maintain operations. The Bronx Economic Development Corporation (BXEDC) is trying to alleviate some of those concerns for small business owners by offering low-interest loans, tailor made for small and mid-sized businesses operating in, or moving to, The Bronx. Our guests are Rob Walsh, President of The Bronx Economic Development Corporation, and Britney Moss, Founder of Cupcake Me!, a client of BXEDC. For more, visit BXEDC.org and cupcakemenyc.com.

This episode is with Simon Beeton, the Chief Executive of Navigo Health and Social Care CIC, a mental health and wellbeing provider in Northeast Lincolnshire. Navigo have been named in the Sunday Times top 100 not-for-profit organisations to work five years in a row! So there will be lessons to learn for everyone. Simon has been on quite a journey. We talk about his transition from long standing Finance Director to Chief Executive and the challenges of moving to this broader, more strategic role. We discuss Navigo's impressive entrepreneurial activity, such as their purchase and running of a garden centre and restaurant. Public service entrepreneurialism is important in terms of giving individuals the space to be creative and also being entrepreneurial at an organisational level. Simon provides some good examples of how Navigo is creating the space to beg forgiveness rather than ask permission… The main section of the conversation is around £radical" place leadership and place working. Simon and I talk about how the local organisations in Northeast Lincolnshire want to work more effectively together, and how it's so important (in the words of NE Lincs Council Chief Executive, Rob Walsh) to put place above organisation. The Mutual Ventures team are lucky to be doing some innovative work with Northeast Lincolnshire on developing a more Radical Place Leadership approach and we talk about that and what the ultimate goals are.

This episode is with Rob Walsh, the long standing Chief Executive of Northeast Lincolnshire Council. Rob has been Chief Exec of Northeast Lincolnshire for 10 years now which, in an era of quite high turnover for top local government jobs, is quite some achievement! Rob tells the story of how Northeast Lincolnshire is an area which has seen decline in the fishing industry - but is now embracing a new era of possibility around the decarbonisation and renewable energy market. Northeast Lincolnshire is a fantastic case study for Place Leadership: It was the first time to receive a Town Deal back in 2018; It has a long-standing section 75 agreement, which is essentially a way of pooling funding and resources between councils and the health system; and they are also part of proposal for a Greater Lincolnshire Mayoral Combined Authority. On top of that, within Northeast Lincolnshire itself, there's quite a lot of co-terminosity between some of the key anchor institutions, the council, and some of the key health providers, who are largely social enterprises. Rob is a very humble and quietly inspiring leader. And in my opinion, there is something quite special happening in Northeast Lincolnshire. I think they are quietly becoming a forerunner for what other areas in the country could aspire to.

The line-up is made complete by Stephanie Barcelona- vox, Nestor Teran- guitar/keys, Jonathan Harwood- drums, and Sam Barker- bass Kelsey Montanez is one of Chicago's best kept secrets. Both intimate and ecstatic, smokey and scorching, her potent blend of blues, pop, and psychedelia has been turning heads for over a decade. Among the singer-songwriter's many talents, it's Montanez's arresting voice that has captured a devoted fanbase. It comes as no surprise that her visceral 2013 EP “A Delightful Sadness” scored her a record contract and music video with Chance the Rapper on lead single “Out of Sight.” True to her strong sense of independence, Montanez subsequently opted to pursue her own uncompromising artistic vision. It took a pandemic worth of isolation and heartbreak to transform that raw power into the refined spectacle that is her first record in over a decade. Bolstered by the pristine production of Bill Karambelas and internationally acclaimed session musicians, her music is both transcendent and catchy, demonstrating the songwriter's range and ability to transform deeply personal lyrics into searing and seductive rock. While conjuring vocalists like Amy Winehouse and Lauryn Hill, Montanez possesses her own unmistakable voice. Kelsey Montanez has been listed in the Chicago REDEYE as “15 artists to Watch" and celebrated in the Chicago Reader and Chicago Tribune. Montanez has headlined prominent Chicago venues such as the Metro, House of Blues, as well as festivals such as SXSW. Recently, Montanez was awarded the 2020 Magellan Musician in Residence at the historic Aqua Building.

One of the ways we make podcasting better is by holding the people who work in podcasting accountable for doing better. I'm using my induction into the Podcast Hall of Fame to shine more light on that. Image courtesy of http://twitter.com/sheila_dee (Sheila Dee) In case you missed the memo, I was inducted into the https://podcasthof.com/hall-of-fame/ (Podcast Hall of Fame) last weekend. For those who don't have ~2 hours to watch the video hosted on Libsyn's account of the entire event, I've isolated out just my bit for today's episode. I talked a bit about the various perspectives of the people in podcasting. But the main thrust of my talk was about the perspective of people who are aware of podcasting but still aren't picking up what we're putting down. What do we look like to them? It's great that https://www.edisonresearch.com/the-infinite-dial-2022/ (the diversity of podcast listeners is now nearly matching and in some cases exceeding the diversity of the overall country). But that's just listeners. Creators and service providers still over-index on the old white dude scale. I'm doing what I can to change that by leading by example. I no longer apply to speak at podcast conferences because I don't want to force a well-meaning conference organizer to choose between me or someone from an underrepresented group to be on the stage. Someone whose ideas, work, and opinions deserve to be heard by more people. I'll speak at conferences if invited, but only after I do my homework. If (when)the headshots of other speakers aren't sufficiently diverse, I make them invite speakers from underrepresented groups. And if they refuse or are unable to comply with my request, I turn down the offer to speak. I've much the same attitude when I interact with my peers in the podcasting industry, and I don't shy away from calling my fellow old white dudes out on their bullshit or their bad behavior. I'm not virtue signaling here. I call them out because I've been there, spewing similar bullshit or exhibiting similar bad behavior. A friend of mine once said to me, "You get away with so much because you're Evo." She was right. That wasn't good. And it's up to me to do better. I'm trying every day. And because it was an awards speech, I thanked a bunch of people, like: http://twitter.com/sheila_dee (Sheila Dee), https://www.facebook.com/michael.mennenga (Mike Mennenga) https://www.linkedin.com/in/nathanialunwin (NJ Unwin) https://twitter.com/TeeMonster (Tee Morris) https://twitter.com/markjeffrey (Mark Jeffrey) https://twitter.com/scottsigler (Scott Sigler) https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100069795018864 (Chris Miller) https://www.linkedin.com/in/timlwhite/ (Tim White) https://www.linkedin.com/in/brantsteen (Brant Steen) https://linkedin.com/in/podcast411 (Rob Walsh) https://twitter.com/GaryLeland (Gary Leland) https://twitter.com/jaredeasley (Jared Easley) https://twitter.com/dmfranks (Dan Franks) https://twitter.com/1LanceAnderson (Lance Anderson) http://twitter.com/bkkgreg (Greg Jorgensen) https://twitter.com/Global_Gaz (Ric Gazarian) https://twitter.com/alushlifemanual (Susan Schwartz) https://twitter.com/Daughterpick (Allie Press) http://twitter.com/walkersam (Sam Walker) http://twitter.com/bryanbarletta (Bryan Barletta) http://twitter.com/jamescridland (James Cridland) http://twitter.com/libsyn (Libsyn) https://www.captivate.fm/ (Captivate) https://maps.fm/ (Maps.fm) https://scribl.com/ (Scribl) the https://mobile.twitter.com/bipoccreators (BIPOC Podcast Creators) community, ... and the myriad people and companies I couldn't squeeze in. The line-up is made complete by Stephanie Barcelona on vocals, Joseph Allawos on bass, Nestor Teran on guitar, and Jake Cavinder on drums. Stray Local is the husband-and-wife songwriting duo of Hannah and Jamie Rowen based in Raleigh, North Carolina. The pair performs a bouquet of indie sounds punctuated by powerful vocal melodies, vibey guitar riffs, dreamy synths, and rich harmonies woven together with a strong pop sensibility. 2020 was the year Stray Local made the move to Raleigh to be immersed in the thriving triangle music scene, when of course Covid put a halt to shows, tours, and collaborations. They turned to writing and producing music from their home studio. They recently released Featherweight, which is the band's 3rd new single of 2021.
It's called "The Great Resignation," and it could bring dramatic changes to New York City. Employees are saying "I quit" more than ever. The pandemic has changed every aspect of our lives, especially the way we work and where we work or if we still work at all. Economists describe "The Great Resignation" as the boom of people resigning from their jobs post-pandemic. Surveys show up to 40 percent of workers plan on leaving within the next few months, and we're already seeing a sharp increase of workers sending in their resignation letters. On this episode, we will explain why experts believe the great resignation is coming, how this could change the dynamics of neighborhoods, retail, and even tourism in new york city, and the conversations workers should have before leaving their jobs. This week we speak to Axios business reporter Erica Pandey whose done extensive reporting on the great resignation. We also chat with our small business expert, Rob Walsh, to see how this impacts the city. And lastly, we catch up with TikToker @KatieYowYow, a tech recruiter who has been getting many career questions on social media centered around resignation. We are closing in on the primary elections in New York City, primary day is June 22nd, and the early voting starts on June 12th. Registered democrats and republicans will be selecting who will represent their party for city elections, including the highly contested mayor's race. This week we wanted to hear from the republicans that are running for mayor. On this episode, you'll hear from Curtis Sliwa, the leader of the Guardian Angles and former radio talk show host. He's running against Fernando Mateo, who has previously served as a spokesperson for Livery and Taxi drivers and Bodega owners. We'll also hear from well-known political analyst Hank Sheinkopf to get his take on the race and the state of the republican party in the city. This week's filling in for Al Jones is Rob Walsh, the host of the bottom line for small business on 1010 WINS. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Humanise The Numbers - for ambitious accountants in practice
What can you do to grow the commerciality of your people so that they drive the fees, they drive the profits and they drive the capital value of growth in your accountancy firm.On this podcast discussion with Rob Walsh, you'll hear Rob describe how he grew the commerciality of his team so that he did less, they did more, and they contributed significantly to the growth of fees and the profitability, and ultimately the capital value of the firm too.Rob's story is an interesting one because Rob progressed in a multi-office multi-partner firm before he realised that he needed to go it alone. He set his own practice up, grew that to an excess of a million pounds, grew a significant amount of fees from the world of advisory consulting with his business owner clients and then 18 months ago sold that practice onto one of his key managers.I hope you enjoy the podcast.
With less than fifty days until the primary elections in New York City, the crowded field of candidates on the Democratic side are trying to grab voters' attention as they make a push for City Hall. On this week's episode, we'll look at the mayoral race and focus on the highly contested Democratic primary. Our co-host for this week is a familiar voice to 1010 WINS listeners, Rob Walsh. Rob is the former Small Business Services Commissioner under Mayor Bloomberg and the host of the Bottom Line on 1010 WINS. Also, we'll talk To Jerry Skurnik from Prime New York, a political consultant who has been supplying data for campaigns on local and state levels since 1988. Finally, we'll catch up with Hank Sheinkopf, a veteran political consultant, to get his take on the race. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
At some point, many podcasters feel the need to share the knowledge they have gained with other less experienced podcasters. But how you do that, and how you bill yourself and the materials you have to present matters. Do We Need Another Book About Podcasting? There’s always room for more books about podcasting. But have you amassed the experience necessary to allow you to fill a book about podcasting? This may come off a bit hypocritical of me, as I had less than a year of podcasting experience under my belt when I started writing https://www.wiley.com/en-mq/Podcasting+For+Dummies-p-9780471748984 (Podcasting for Dummies). The same goes for the other early podcasting books like https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1887056.Podcasting (Podcasting: Do-It-Yourself Guide), written by http://twitter.com/geeknews (Todd Cochrane) of https://blubrry.com/ (Blubbry) and http://vig-fp.pearsoned.com/educator/product/Tricks-of-the-Podcasting-Masters/9780789735744.page (Tricks of The Podcasting Masters), written http://twitter.com/podcast411 (Rob Walsh) from https://libsyn.com/ (Libsyn). But a lot of time has passed, and podcasting is no longer brand new. So while you can write a book about podcasting today, there’s a lot of ground—and history—to cover. Are you up to that task? Should You Write A How-To Podcast Course? If you feel you really do have a unique take on podcasting that is worthy of a course, then yes, absolutely, you should make that course. But take some time to do some research on what already is out there, and have a self-check-in to make sure you can deliver the goods. Reputation matters in this space, and there are plenty of people with tarnished reputations in podcasting. We have a long memory. You really don’t want to be That Guy. Should You Become A Podcast Coach? If you do want to coach, drill down on what you do best. If audio engineering is your kick, then maybe you can coach people on getting the most out of a particular DAW or a select group of audio plugins. Perhaps you’re an excellent editor of the written word and could coach people on transforming text written to be read into something written to be narrated and heard. Or maybe you’re a Speech-Language Pathologist and are able to coach podcasters on how to get the most of out their voice as a vocal coach. Is Podcast Mentorship Right For You? If you're a regular listener/reader of my content and you've been podcasting for a while, you’d probably make a great mentor for another podcaster! I prefer unstructured mentor/mentee relationships (hi, https://twitter.com/steph_colbourn (Steph)!) and mentorships that are free. Just remember that being a mentor is not the same thing as being a coach or a teacher. The dynamic is different when the person on the other end is a student. The expectation of the one passing on the knowledge—that’s you—is different as well. To me, mentorship is much more general and open-ended in nature. Coaching and teaching tend to be best when they are highly specialized and have a well-defined goal, outcome, and end-date. So which is the right approach for you? Suggestion: get your peers involved and crowdsource the decision. Reach out to a small number of people you trust—people who know you and who won’t bullshit you—asking for their input. Include a link to this article so they can quickly understand the possibilities and pitfalls. Then review their feedback and make your best decision. Tomorrow morning, I’ll be hosting a room on Clubhouse that’s all about https://www.joinclubhouse.com/event/xBg3DY57 (keeping the magic of podcasting alive in you, the person behind the microphone). I’d love for you to join me. And do let me know if you need an invite. I have a few to spare. ----- Read the full article and share with a friend: https://podcastpontifications.com/episode/how-to-share-your-podcasting-brilliance-not-be-a-jerk-about-it... Are you in the Podcast Business? Or the Business of Podcasting? Recently I interviewed Khayra Bundakji from the mstdfr network and founder of the Azzbda podcast, on Own the Future podcast, and learned two things: When two podcasters/interviewers sit down it will be a marathon of an episode. You should quit the podcast business… Not the encouraging advice you’d expect to hear in an email newsletter about podcasting. Let me explain . . . During the conversation with Khayra I asked how Azzbda podcast was going, download numbers etc. typical stuff . . . Khayra graciously revealed they are producing one episode a month, and receive TEN THOUSAND listens each month. I was stoked. “10k while only putting out one episode a month. Epic!” I exclaimed. Khayra was not as enthused, “Yeah . . .” she said, “I mean I feel like we could have so much more.” *cue the record scratching* Wait what?? Hold the phone. Ten Thousand people show up a month and you’re bummed?!? Little did I know my hypocritical judgment was about to become exposed… For point of reference: The MEDIAN download of an episode (not mean or average) is 173 download per episode. For those of us who are foggy on our high school math, the median is middle number of the data set. Of the 660,000+ podcasts and hundreds of millions of episodes, 50% will have less than 173 download and 50% will have more than 173 downloads. The MEAN (or average) of an episode is 2000 downloads per episode (after accounting for the top top podcasts and those waaay down at the bottom). [according to Rob Walsh with Libsyn, in a piece from 2016]. These stats may have changed in the last three years—but not by much. Okay… back to Khayra. They have 10k per episode. Sure, it isn’t in the millions, or hundreds of thousand, BUT it is in the top 5% of all 660k+ podcasts in existence. On the graph you can see how Azzbda, the blue triangle, is performing better than 95% of all podcast! That better than 627,000 of the 660,000+ podcast—globally. From my perspective, as a relatively new podcaster still in the days of small beginnings, I would be OUT OF MY MIND to have 10k listeners per episode. The truth, however, reveals I’m a hypocrite. Because I look and my above median downloads per-episode, and I’m discouraged. If I am honest, I’d be discouraged if I was getting 10k, 100k, or a million downloads per episode. Why? Because there is always more, there is always another level of success to achieve. So . . . Am I even qualified to be writing this email to you? What might I say to benefit you in your journey? As I pondered all this . . . I came to a point of revelation, a point of truth in the form of a question: Why are you podcasting? Are you in the podcast business? OR . . . the business of podcasting? Are you in the podcast business? Are you doing it for the numbers? The following? The masses? The “money”? Hustling for another subscriber, the shout out, download . . . never stratified and always craving more? OR Are you in the business of podcasting? Are you satisfied with the one? The individual you touched with your words? What if you ONLY impact 173 lives. Would you continue? Would you continue to share your stories, truth, laughter, and tears with your world? Is your message/story/perspective so important, so costly, so worth it you would show up even if only SEVENTEEN people listened? As Kharya says, “Podcasting will save the world.” It happens one person at a time. Kharya is in the business of podcasting. She believes in her work and her message. She would keep showing up even she only changed one life through her work. It is easy to get caught-up and blinded with the numbers. That can happen with ten, or ten million followers. But, we MUST NOT miss the beauty of intimately impacting the ONE person listening. The ONE person caring about your work. If you don’t believe your work is worth it if you only touch one life . . . then you should ask yourself if you are giving yourself to something you truly believe in? Or are you chasing an illusion of fame and significance? If you find yourself in the podcast business, yearning for the attention of the world . . . quit. Instead . . . Join the business of podcasting . . . . . . the business of putting you work/yourself out there . . . the business of taking the time to saying something meaningful . . . but the business of seeing and saying something to the ONE. . . . Because your work, your voice, your story is worth it—even if only one listens.

Thank you so very much to all of you who have gone to www.classictalesaudiobooks.com and become financial supporters. There are several options to support the podcast, starting at $5 a month. Each of your offers of support comes with a monthly “thank-you” code. Use the codes for any audiobook download, and watch your library of classics bloom and grow. Everybody wins! And we get to keep the podcast going strong. Thanks again for your generous support. I had the opportunity last week of chatting with Rob Walsh, podcasting guru and executive at Libsyn, the largest podcast hosting company. We took a look at my statistics, and it seems that The Classic Tales Podcast is in the top 5% of all current podcasts. Like, all of them. There are 639,000 currently updated podcasts, and mine is in the top 5%. Congratulations for listening to a winner! Rob also mentioned that the largest genre of new podcasts is business podcasts. I asked what he meant. He said that the podcast is to businesses what websites were 13 years ago. Everybody needs one, and everyone’s getting one. It gives your business a voice, and creates a unique space where you can engage with your clients and customers. Your clients love to hear how you develop your product, or come up with your ideas. They’d love to hear to describe your creative process, or how you overcame crazy obstacles. Hey, I know content creation, and I can help make it happen. So if you’d like to have a podcast for your business, let me help you. I can help to develop, write, record and set up your very own podcast. And the kind folks at Libsyn have worked out a deal with me where if you hire me to help to set up your podcast, you can get your first TWO months of podcast hosting free. Maybe you’re a writer wanting to expand your readership. Maybe you’re a new company with an amazing product. Maybe you’d like to polish your brand with added sophistication. Podcasting can take you to the next level, and I can help you get there. If you would like me to develop a podcast for your business, please send me an email at: bj@thebestaudiobooks.com. Only a limited number of slots are available. I’d love to work with you. And now, The Inimitable Jeeves, part 3 of 7, by P.G.
