Daniel SeidmanComposer & Co-LyricistDr. Daniel Seidman is a licensed clinical psychologist practicing in New York City. Dan started playing in a band at the age of 12 at the Cafe Wha in Greenwich Village. At the age of 15, he toured the U.S. and Canada playing Hammond organ for Chubby Checker. He completed a year as a composition major at the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1972-1973, and a B.A. in History from SUNY Binghamton. He received a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1988, and subsequently joined the faculty at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) where he taught, practiced psychology, and did research for 30 years. He retired from Columbia in June of 2018. Fifth Avenue the musical originally grew out of Dan's combined interest in jazz and history. Discussions with a history professor Albert Fried about the immigrant experiences of the Irish, Jews, Italians and in more contemporary times, Blacks, Hispanics and the Chinese provided insight into the “dark side” of the American dream and its “underworld culture”. This is the story Fried tells in his book “The Rise and Fall of the Jewish Gangster in America” (Columbia University Press). After college, Dan began composing the music for "Fifth Avenue" while employed by the Shubert Organization in New York City. He met Susan Crawford, who wrote the book and co-wrote the lyrics for Fifth Avenue, in 1979. They were married in 1984 and are now the proud parents of two grown sons. Susan CrawfordBook Writer and Co-LyricistMy theater life began at 13 in my hometown's Shakespeare Festival. It evolved into much acting from then into my 30's. It soon overlapped with an interest in playwriting, and I finished my first play at 24. Eventually writing overcame acting for me. For that I studied with Arthur Kopit and John Guare; lyric writing at the ASCAP workshop, and with Sheila Davis, and Dorothy Fields. Around that time I co-developed the continuity for Ned Sherrin for “Only In America” songs by Leiber and Stoller. It ran at the Roundhouse in London, and was a distant antecedent to what became “Smoky Joe's Cafe.” “Dollars to Doughnuts, a Comedy for the 99%” was my master's thesis in the CCNY Graduate Writing Program where I studied with Arthur Kopit. It was a finalist in the O'Neill Playwriting Conference the year it was finished (under the title "Lotto"). For the summer 2022 season, it was selected by Theatre for the New City's “Dream Up” Festival where it was workshopped and is now being submitted for production. My one-act "Place Settings" was selected for the Chain Theatre's 2023 Winter One-Act Festival, and is also available for production.R.K. This special Halloween edition of Broadway Nation! This is the first part of my conversation with Adam Abraham, author of Attack of the Monster Musical – A Cultural History of Little Shop Of Horrors.  In this terrific new book Adam relates the unlikely story of how Roger Corman's schlocky, low budget, 1960's monster movie was transformed 20 years later into a smash hit, long-running, Off-Broadway musical that became an international sensation and spawned a hit film musical adaptation as well. And of course, today Little Shop Of Horrors is a hit all over again and can currently be seen in another long running off-Broadway production. Adam Abraham is a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow at Auburn University, and he also has taught at Virginia Commonwealth University, NYU, and Harvard. His previous books include When Magoo Flew: The Rise And Fall of Animation Studio UPA, and Plagiarizing The Victorian Novel: Imitation, Parody, Aftertext. He has also written for film, television, and theater. Attack of the Monster Musical provides us with a fascinating, in depth, look into the dynamic partnership of Howard Ashman & Alan Mencken and their creation of what I believe is one of the best and most perfectly crafted musicals of all time.    Topics discussed in this episode include: How Howard Ashman was influenced by the cast album of GYPSY; how he discovered Roger Corman's film in the first place; his first musical The Candy Shop; the truth behind the legend that Corman shot the original movie in just two days; NYC's Off Broadway scene during the late 1970s and early 80s; the WPA Theater; how an early version of Little Shop bombed at the BMI Workshop; the casting of Ellen Greene & Lee Wilcoff (and how Nathan Lane & Faith Prince were almost in the original cast); why the show never moved to Broadway; what Cameron Mackintosh, David Geffin & the Shubert Organization have to do with the show; how the dream team of Ashman & Menken worked together; and the tragic loss of Howard Ashman. Larry O’Connor: This is great." Andy Ockershausen: Oakie. I love that name. Oakie and Ockee. We could do a show. Larry O’Connor: You gave me permission to call you Ockee. Will you forgive me for a minute, Andy, because honestly, this is going to be so weird for me because, you know, I usually ask the questions? Andy Ockershausen: I know. Larry O’Connor: Let's face it. Larry O’Connor: Well, where'd you get that sweater because that is a really cool sweater vest. Andy Ockershausen: Isn't that nice? I don't know where I got it, it's an old sweater, but I'm an old sweater to because I perspire. But I'm working on it. Larry O'Connor, Oakie. What a career you have had, when I read your resume, I am stunned that you've done so much and you're still a young man. Larry O’Connor: Well, thanks. Andy Ockershausen: And so you must owe a lot of money or people owe you a lot of money because you've had a lot of jobs. Larry O’Connor: Exactly. Everybody says, "Oh, of course, you moved out of Detroit because of all the violence and the poverty and the economy," no, it's the weather. It's absolutely the weather, that's the only reason to get out of that place, because Michigan's cool. Andy Ockershausen: Corona del Mar. Larry O’Connor: Yeah, Corona del Mar, this beautiful subdivision in Newport Beach, California, what shift. Imagine being in the Detroit suburbs, Andy, in the eighties and then suddenly I wake up the next morning and I'm going to school at the beach at Corona del Mar high school, it was amazing. We learn how beacons are being used on and off broadway by The Shubert Organization, the largest theater owner on Broadway. Kyle Wright runs the data analytics and R&D function for Shubert and describes the ways in which beacons can make the experience better for the 13 million ticket holders each year that make up Shubert’s customers. Time Square is one of the most checked in places on earth. Wright is working on how to unlock the value in that. In addition to helping people get to their seats on time, facilitating the link between theaters and restaurants, we hear how Shubert is managing the challenge of getting visitors to use their apps and the partnerships that are helping them to monetize their beacon network. The Producer's Perspective Podcast with Ken Davenport

Brian Mahoney has been at the Shubert Organization for more than 35 years.   His current role is management of ticket pricing, policies and the operation of the 17 Shubert Organization Broadway box offices, oversight of Telecharge call center, the contract with the union for telephone agents, the Telecharge customer database, and The Shubert Organization's sponsorship relationships with American Express and American Airlines. Prior to overseeing box offices and ticket policies, he managed the Telecharge Call Center which for many years was the only way to order tickets other than in person at the box office. He implemented use of zip code data for marketing analysis and understanding customers in a format that is now the standard for Broadway, and introduced Revenue Management and demographic analysis of customers to Broadway, and promoted the use of dynamic pricing and inventory management.  When I first approached him about doing this podcast, he told me that he had to get approval from his higher ups.  And for a long time, I wasn’t sure it would happen. But, he got the green light, which is great news for all of you . . . as Brian and I talked about some pretty interesting stuff about selling tickets on Broadway including: How ticket buying habits on Broadway have changed over the last 30 years. The evolution of the Broadway discount ticket. The one thing that he thinks all Broadway show websites should include . . . but most don’t! What is unique about our relationship with the secondary market . . . and why it differs from sports and concerts. What he thinks of the Hamilton ticketing phenomenon.
