The history of race in American theater is more complicated than you might think, writes Dr. Josephine Lee in Oriental, Black, and White: The Formation of Racial Habits in American Theater (UNC Press, 2022). Dr. Lee, a professor of English and Asian American Studies at the University of Minnesota, examines the linked histories of orientalism, Blackface and Yellowface, in nineteenth and early twentieth century American theater, showing how identity creation and racialization occurred among multiple groups simultaneously. Within the context of large scale East Asian immigration to the West coast, labor debates, and American empire building. Theaters, both on the East and West coasts, and touring Black and white theater companies, thus both reflected and shaped American ideas about race and belonging throughout this time period. A fascinating and complex look at how Americans tried to make sense of their world, Lee asks readers to look beyond easy answers and assumptions, and look at American theater in a new way. Oriental, Black, and White is an open access book, available for free via JStor. Dr. Stephen R. Hausmann is an assistant professor of history at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. Join us on a journey through time and sound as we delve into the remarkable life of Jimmie Cameron, a true trailblazer of music and theatrics. In this special episode of The Tina Ramsay Show, we're honored to be joined by the legendary Jimmie Cameron himself, a musical maverick whose story is one of resilience, creativity, and unyielding passion. In June of 1964, against all odds, Emma Bell Cameron Simmons embarked on a transformative journey, leaving her home behind to seek better opportunities for her children. Little did she know, this act of courage would set the stage for a musical legacy that would captivate hearts around the world. At just 14 years old, Jimmie embarked on his own journey, diving headfirst into the world of music and theatrics. Through the guidance of mentors like Nichelle Nicoles of Star Trek fame and the visionary Frank Silvera, founder of the American Theater of Being, Jimmie's talent ignited like a spark on a stormy night. Imagine a theater group where Jimmie Cameron shared the spotlight with icons like Maya Angelou, Bea Richards, Isabel Sanford, and so many more. Picture the vibrant energy of Hollywood's Coronet Theater in the 1960s, where Jimmie was not just an up-and-coming star, but a force to be reckoned with. From the hallowed halls of Baldwin's "The Amen Corner" to the stages of the controversial musical "Hair" in Acapulco, Jimmie's journey was a symphony of perseverance. His unique musical style, in collaboration with Vella, became an underground sensation, touching the hearts of those lucky enough to hear it. Even without the commercial airplay, their music resonated deeply. Jimmie's path took him to New York, with a chance encounter with a song that would change his life. We'll explore the cosmic connection between Jimmie and the legendary Jimi Hendrix, and how this twist of fate led to a signing with Atlantic Records. Despite the hurdles, Jimmie and Vella shone brightly, sharing stages with legends like Cat Stevens, Patti LaBelle, and Bill Withers. Their resilience reached its peak when they signed with Unlimited Gold Records, Barry White's label, and recorded their iconic album "Song Painters." With Barry White producing alongside Jimmie and Vella, their music took on new dimensions, yet the journey wasn't without its challenges. Through highs and lows, Jimmie's spirit remained unbreakable. Join us for an inspiring conversation with Jimmie Cameron, as he reflects on his remarkable career, the power of passion, and the unwavering dedication to his craft that carried him through decades of musical exploration. Today, she tells us about the new Arena Stage production of playwright Lauren Yee's Cambodian Rock Band, a mesmerizing, music-infused drama about how war and political oppression in the 1960s and 70s ravaged the southeast Asian nation's vibrant rock music culture, and the how the war's violent legacy still haunts a Cambodian family. Directed at Arena Stage by Chay Yew, Cambodian Rock Band 's cast includes Brooke Ishibashi, Francis Jue, Abraham Kim, Kelsey Angel Baehrens, Tim Liu, Jane Lui, Alex Lydon, Joe Ngo and Vi Tran. The show incorporates a live stage band - The Cyclos - covering 1960s- and 70s-era Cambodian psychedelic rock music and Cambodian-influenced songs by the contemporary American band, Dengue Fever. CRB is a Signature Theatre production, in association with Alley Theatre, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, and ACT Theatre/5th Avenue. Cambodian Rock Band continues at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater in Washington, DC through August 27. Have you ever been ghosted in academia? The mentor who no longer replies when you reach out, the collaborators who mysteriously stopped collaborating with you, the search committee that said you were a top candidate and then stopped communicating with you—these are academic ghosts. They are people who are important to your career and suddenly stop responding to you without warning or explanation. What makes academic ghosting different than romantic ghosting? And why does it seem to hurt so much more? Dr. Andrea Andrzejewski joins us to explain: The systems in academia that make some forms of ghosting inevitable. What to do about it. The lingering pain and shame that being ghosted causes. Why your ghoster may reappear but they won't apologize. The ethical and financial reasons to address the issues that perpetuate ghosting. Our guest is: Dr. Alicia Andrzejewski, an assistant professor of English at the College of William & Mary. She is a scholar of early modern literature and culture; queer, feminist, and critical race theory; and the medical humanities. This is the second half of my conversation with Thomas Hischak whose new book is titled The Abbott Touch — Pal Joey, Damn Yankees and the Theatre of George Abbott. If you missed part one, you may want to catch up with the previous episode before listening to this one. George Abbott was a major force in the American Theater for more than 80 years. As an actor, director, playwright, and producer — and often several of those at the same time — he played a significant role in the creation of well over 100 Broadway plays and musicals including Jumbo, The Boys From Syracuse, On The Town, Where's Charlie, Call Me Madam, The Pajama Game, Once Upon A Mattress and Fiorello to name only a few. Thomas Hischak is the author of more than 30 books about Broadway, Hollywood and popular music including Musical Misfires — three decades of Broadway Musical heartbreak, The Mikado to Matilda — British Musicals on the New York Stage, and the Tin Pan Alley Encyclopedia. At the end of our previous episode Thomas Hischak and I were just beginning a discussion of the remarkable list of Broadway greatest writers, directors and choreographers who were all in essence trained and mentored by Mr. Abbott including Rodgers & Hart, Comden, Green & Bernstein, Adler & Ross, Bock & Harnick, Kander & Ebb, Jerome Robbins and most especially, Harold Prince. We also explore his reputation as a "show doctor." We will never now how many shows he advised and "fixed" on their way to Broadway. Become A PATRON of Broadway Nation! To Be Heard, To Be Seen, To MatterShaunda McDill is the newly appointed Managing Director of the Pittsburgh Public Theater. She is a rare type of new leader coming of age in the modern American Theater – black women who are ascending to top roles in major theatrical institutions across the country. She joins the ranks of theatrical trailblazers like Nataki Garrett, Artistic Director at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival; Dominique Morisseau, Executive Artistic Producer at Detroit Public Theater; Patricia McGregor, Artistic Director at New York Theater Workshop; and Hana Sharif, the Augustin Family Artistic Director at Repertory Theater of St. Louis. All wrestling with that question of how do we create space within the canon of the theater to make as much room as possible for a multitude of voices, perspectives, and stories to emerge that are as diverse and as expansive as is the landscape of the country today. Because in the final analysis, it comes down to Representation. And whose stories get to be heard, to be seen and to matter. For Shaunda, her answer to that question has its roots in her nontraditional journey to the Pittsburgh Public Theater. As a young girl her life as an artist began by performing in skits at the local Red Cross to highlight HIV/AIDS for kids, and reciting Bible verses in the Easter Pageants at her church. Along the way, she was mentored by such theater and literary luminaries as Ntozake Shange and August Wilson, and influenced by the words of Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, and Toni Morrison. She formed her own theater company called Demaskus – that unapologetically creates space for the underserved and underrepresented people in the theater to have the artistic license to succeed and fail, and to explore freely their artistry on their own terms. For as Shaunda says, “It is necessary for us to tell our own stories if they are going to be told. We must bear witness to what happens and what has transpired in our lives.” She has built a life buttressed by her strong, unshakeable faith and her belief that her approach to creativity isn't about struggling to convince others of her humanity, but rather a struggle to produce work and art that reflects her vision of the world. Her life and her career are not exercises in looking outward, rather they are the result of Shaunda looking inward into her innermost soul.At the Podium WebsiteAt the Podium on IGPatrick on IGFor more information contact Patrick at patrick@patrickhueyleadership.com
