The Clubhouse model is proving that community and purpose can transform lives for people with serious mental illness. In this episode, Josh Seidman, Chief External Impact Officer for Fountain House, explores how the organization pioneered the Clubhouse model, a psychosocial rehabilitation approach built on community, partnership, and purpose rather than clinical hierarchies. Since its start in 1948, the model has expanded to 380 Clubhouses in 33 countries, helping members rebuild their lives through work, education, and connection. Data show that Clubhouse members experience higher employment, better housing, and reduced loneliness, while the model lowers Medicaid costs by 21%, saving society over $11,000 per person each year. Seidman also highlights participatory research projects like Measures That Matter and the Fountain House United Research Network (FHURN), which empower members to shape meaningful metrics and improve quality outcomes. My guest today is Caryn Seidman-Becker. Caryn is the Chairman and CEO of Clear. She bought the company out of bankruptcy for $6 million in 2010 and built it into the identity platform millions use in airports and stadiums today. Her Wall Street background investing in Apple, Amazon, and Priceline taught her to recognize when products become platforms, which shaped her vision for Clear as the "definitive secure identity platform" far beyond travel. Caryn shares the gritty early days of literally hunting down hardware in airport storage facilities and rebuilding the entire business from scratch. She embodies an incredible "bias for action." We discuss turning around a business, scaling a platform, and why she believes your face will soon be your key to everything. Please enjoy my conversation with Caryn Seidman-Becker. Who's to blame for these skyrocketing electricity bills? The causes are many: aging infrastructure, economic uncertainty, tariffs, wars, red tape, the failure to build enough renewable energy, inefficient construction, rising demand, the responsibility of investor-owned utilities to generate profits for shareholders and rapidly changing climates, both atmospheric and political. Over the next few weeks, we'll examine some of these causes and innovative solutions being proposed. But to understand utility prices, you first must understand how the largest machine in the world works - one so ubiquitous that although we use it every minute of every day, we hardly notice it. New York's power grid consists of 11,000 miles of transmission lines that can supply up to 41,000 megawatts of electricity. The problem is that the grid is losing power faster than it can be replaced. Fossil-fuel plants are aging out of service. Since 2019, New York has added 2,274 megawatts while deactivating 4,315 megawatts. "It's an old system," said Rich Dewey, president of the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), the nonprofit tasked with running the grid, on an episode of its podcast, Power Trends. "The expectation that it's going to continue to perform at the same high level that it has, say, for the last couple of decades, is just not reasonable. We're going to need to replace those megawatts" to maintain a reliable transmission system. The state has undertaken several initiatives to boost the energy flowing through the grid. Six years ago, the state Legislature passed an ambitious law that stipulates that New York must be powered by 70 percent renewable energy by 2030 and 100 percent zero-emission electricity by 2040. Last year, 48 percent of the energy produced by the state was zero-emission; nearly all that energy is produced upstate, where solar and hydropower are abundant. The $6 billion Champlain Hudson Power Express, which will carry 1,250 megawatts of renewable energy from Quebec to New York City, and passes by the Highlands buried beneath the Hudson River, is expected to go online in 2026. This week, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced her intention, citing the Build Public Renewables Act of 2023, to construct nuclear plants that will produce at least 1 gigawatt. The site or sites for those plants are expected to be in less-populated areas upstate or in western New York, which would make them subject to the same problem that prevents solar and hydropower from reaching downstate, including the Highlands: a bottleneck where the upstate and downstate grids meet. The $2 billion question If Jeffrey Seidman, a Vassar College professor, sounds philosophical when discussing climate change, it's to be expected. Seidman is an associate professor of philosophy. A few years ago, he began having second thoughts about his chosen field of study. "Watching the world visibly burning, I began to doubt that continuing to teach philosophy was morally defensible at this moment," he said. A career change seemed out of the question - Seidman had just turned 50 - but Vassar's Environmental Studies department is interdisciplinary. So he developed a class called Climate Solutions & Climate Careers. Lately, he has been taking his lectures outside the classroom to clear up misinformation for lawmakers. Renewable energy faces strong headwinds these days, as President Donald Trump's executive orders and proposed legislation demonstrate that he intends to make it more difficult to build wind and solar projects. Before relenting, the federal government briefly halted an offshore wind project that was under construction off Long Island. At a June 3 meeting of Dutchess County mayors and supervisors, Seidman explained the potential of battery energy storage systems (BESS) to facilitate the transfer of renewable energy from upstate to the Hudson Valley. Jennifer Manierre of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) discussed how the state can help ...

In this episode of Next Steps 4 Seniors, host Wendy Jones and Dr. Danny Seidman, DO MPH discuss the importance of making informed food choices, the obesity epidemic, and the significance of preventative screenings as we age. Dr. Seidman shares practical tips for interpreting food labels, the benefits of organic foods, and the necessity of maintaining a strong relationship with healthcare providers to ensure a healthy aging process. Eating food without labels is a great way to go. Preparing food at home is healthier than eating out. Good food goes bad; avoid ultra-processed products. Organic food is preferable when financially feasible. Education on food choices is crucial for health. Half of adults are overweight or obese in the U.S. Maintaining healthy blood vessels can decrease dementia risk. Preventative screenings remain important as we age. An active relationship with a primary care physician is vital. Discussing health concerns with family can aid in care. ☎️ Got questions? Daniel SeidmanComposer & Co-LyricistDr. Daniel Seidman is a licensed clinical psychologist practicing in New York City. Dan started playing in a band at the age of 12 at the Cafe Wha in Greenwich Village. At the age of 15, he toured the U.S. and Canada playing Hammond organ for Chubby Checker. He completed a year as a composition major at the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1972-1973, and a B.A. in History from SUNY Binghamton. He received a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1988, and subsequently joined the faculty at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) where he taught, practiced psychology, and did research for 30 years. He retired from Columbia in June of 2018. Fifth Avenue the musical originally grew out of Dan's combined interest in jazz and history. Discussions with a history professor Albert Fried about the immigrant experiences of the Irish, Jews, Italians and in more contemporary times, Blacks, Hispanics and the Chinese provided insight into the “dark side” of the American dream and its “underworld culture”. This is the story Fried tells in his book “The Rise and Fall of the Jewish Gangster in America” (Columbia University Press). After college, Dan began composing the music for "Fifth Avenue" while employed by the Shubert Organization in New York City. He met Susan Crawford, who wrote the book and co-wrote the lyrics for Fifth Avenue, in 1979. They were married in 1984 and are now the proud parents of two grown sons. Susan CrawfordBook Writer and Co-LyricistMy theater life began at 13 in my hometown's Shakespeare Festival. It evolved into much acting from then into my 30's. It soon overlapped with an interest in playwriting, and I finished my first play at 24. Eventually writing overcame acting for me. For that I studied with Arthur Kopit and John Guare; lyric writing at the ASCAP workshop, and with Sheila Davis, and Dorothy Fields. Around that time I co-developed the continuity for Ned Sherrin for “Only In America” songs by Leiber and Stoller. It ran at the Roundhouse in London, and was a distant antecedent to what became “Smoky Joe's Cafe.” “Dollars to Doughnuts, a Comedy for the 99%” was my master's thesis in the CCNY Graduate Writing Program where I studied with Arthur Kopit. It was a finalist in the O'Neill Playwriting Conference the year it was finished (under the title "Lotto"). For the summer 2022 season, it was selected by Theatre for the New City's “Dream Up” Festival where it was workshopped and is now being submitted for production. My one-act "Place Settings" was selected for the Chain Theatre's 2023 Winter One-Act Festival, and is also available for production.R.K. This week on CounterSpin: While the New York Times rolls out claptrap about how both “the left and the right” have ideas about causes behind the devastating Los Angeles wildfires — the right blame DEI hires, while the left blame climate change — many people have moved beyond that sort of stultifying nonsense to work that directly confronts the fossil fuel companies, and their political enablers, for the obvious role that fossil fuels play in climate disruption, and that climate disruption plays in extreme weather events. Many are also now calling out insurance companies that take folks' money but then hinder their ability to come out from under when these predictable and predicted crises occur. Would you be surprised to hear that these powerful industries — fossil fuels and insurers — are intertwined? We talked about it last year with writer and historian Derek Seidman. Did you see the coverage of how people with disabilities are dealing with the California fires' impact? Probably not, given that the place of people with disabilities in elite media coverage ranges roughly from afterthought to absent. We talked about that last year with disability rights advocate and policy analyst Ariel Adelman, in the wake of a Supreme Court case that considered dismantling civil rights protections for people with disabilities by criminalizing the ways that we learn about whether those protections are actually real. We'll hear that too. The post Derek Seidman on Insurance and Climate (2024) / Ariel Adelman on Disability Civil Rights (2024) appeared first on KPFA.

There is an academic cottage industry on the "Jewish Freud," aiming to detect Jewish influences on Freud, his own feelings about being Jewish, and suppressed traces of Jewishness in his thought. In Translating the Jewish Freud: Psychoanalysis in Hebrew and Yiddish (Stanford University Press, 2024), Naomi Seidman takes a different approach, turning her gaze not on Freud but rather on those who seek out his concealed Jewishness. What is it that propels the scholarly aim to show Freud in a Jewish light? Naomi Seidman explores attempts to "touch" Freud (and other famous Jews) through Jewish languages, seeking out his Hebrew name or evidence that he knew some Yiddish. Tracing a history of this drive to bring Freud into Jewish range, Seidman also charts Freud's responses to (and jokes about) this desire. More specifically, she reads the reception and translation of Freud in Hebrew and Yiddish as instances of the desire to touch, feel, "rescue," and connect with the famous Professor from Vienna. Interviewee: Naomi Seidman is the Chancellor Jackman Professor of the Arts at the University of Toronto, a National Jewish Book Award winner, and a 2016 Guggenheim Fellow. Get INTUIT with Gila- a podcast about Intuitive Eating and Personal Growth.
Lauren came on the pod to share her experience going from a corporate mom to "work from home mom." Not only is she a "work from home" mom, her job is to help new mom's. She understands the importance of a positive birthing experience for the mom, the baby & everyone else in mom's orbit. You may have guessed that she didn't have the most positive birthing experience when she started out as a mom. This led her to look for answers for the positive birth she hoped &dreamed of. Now she helps women do the same. We had a very honest conversation about all the ups & downs of becoming a mom. The intensity of pregnancy, birth and post partum. The things people don't like to talk about b/c they are scared they will look like they can't "do it all." People are told 2 have babies but don't LOOK like you had a baby. People make comments about a pregnant body even though this may be the most vulnerable time for that pregnant mom and her body. We wanted to shed light on these topics. I think Lauren is providing an amazing service. I think many people may shy away from this - thinking maybe its a luxury or it makes them week to ask for help. I strongly believe looking at a whole person when caring for them and things that will help them in the future are needs and not luxuries. Asking for help makes you strong and self aware, NOT WEAK. Enjoy the episode! I can't wait to hear your feedback! A bit about Lauren: Lauren Seidman is a certified childbirth educator, birth, and postpartum doula based in Long Island, NY. She is also a mom of 4 young children. Professionally, Lauren offers clear and down-to-earth childbirth education classes to help demystify the birth process. She loves witnessing how education and support enables expecting parents to transform from anxious and unsure to empowered and confident. Lauren also loves normalizing common struggles and experiences of birth & new motherhood on her instagram page @birth_positive, helping women feel less alone. Personally, Lauren enjoys exercise, reading, spending time with family and friends, and eating nourishing foods. Don't forget to rate, review and share the podcast! In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Sven Heinz from the University of California in San Diego about his work on the impact of sequence variation on transcription factor binding affinities and genetic diversity. Sven Heinz talks about a landmark study published in Nature that examined the impact of sequence variation on transcription factor binding affinities and downstream effects on gene expression. Modifying genetic sequences to understand the influence of different motifs provided valuable insights into how genetic variation shapes cellular responses and gene expression patterns, underscoring the importance of genetic diversity. Methodological approaches using inducible systems to observe changes in transcription factor binding patterns highlight the critical role of motif variation and redundancy in transcription factor families. These studies provide essential insights into the complex network of transcriptional regulation and chromatin dynamics, revealing the nuanced mechanisms that control gene expression and chromatin organization. In addition, he is investigating how small nucleotide changes can significantly affect transcription factor binding in macrophages from different mouse strains, shedding light on the intricate effects of genetic variation on transcription factor binding. Sven's career path from project scientist to assistant professor at UC San Diego and the Salk Institute reflects a journey marked by serendipitous opportunities and a collaborative, innovative research environment. The podcast delves into the effects of influenza virus infection on chromosomal territories, gene transcription, and chromatin structure, unraveling the sophisticated interplay between viral infection and host cell transcriptional regulation.
