Daniel SeidmanComposer & Co-LyricistDr. Daniel Seidman is a licensed clinical psychologist practicing in New York City. Dan started playing in a band at the age of 12 at the Cafe Wha in Greenwich Village. At the age of 15, he toured the U.S. and Canada playing Hammond organ for Chubby Checker. He completed a year as a composition major at the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1972-1973, and a B.A. in History from SUNY Binghamton. He received a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1988, and subsequently joined the faculty at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) where he taught, practiced psychology, and did research for 30 years. He retired from Columbia in June of 2018. Fifth Avenue the musical originally grew out of Dan's combined interest in jazz and history. Discussions with a history professor Albert Fried about the immigrant experiences of the Irish, Jews, Italians and in more contemporary times, Blacks, Hispanics and the Chinese provided insight into the “dark side” of the American dream and its “underworld culture”. This is the story Fried tells in his book “The Rise and Fall of the Jewish Gangster in America” (Columbia University Press). After college, Dan began composing the music for "Fifth Avenue" while employed by the Shubert Organization in New York City. He met Susan Crawford, who wrote the book and co-wrote the lyrics for Fifth Avenue, in 1979. They were married in 1984 and are now the proud parents of two grown sons. Susan CrawfordBook Writer and Co-LyricistMy theater life began at 13 in my hometown's Shakespeare Festival. It evolved into much acting from then into my 30's. It soon overlapped with an interest in playwriting, and I finished my first play at 24. Eventually writing overcame acting for me. For that I studied with Arthur Kopit and John Guare; lyric writing at the ASCAP workshop, and with Sheila Davis, and Dorothy Fields. Around that time I co-developed the continuity for Ned Sherrin for “Only In America” songs by Leiber and Stoller. It ran at the Roundhouse in London, and was a distant antecedent to what became “Smoky Joe's Cafe.” “Dollars to Doughnuts, a Comedy for the 99%” was my master's thesis in the CCNY Graduate Writing Program where I studied with Arthur Kopit. It was a finalist in the O'Neill Playwriting Conference the year it was finished (under the title "Lotto"). For the summer 2022 season, it was selected by Theatre for the New City's “Dream Up” Festival where it was workshopped and is now being submitted for production. My one-act "Place Settings" was selected for the Chain Theatre's 2023 Winter One-Act Festival, and is also available for production.R.K. Brian d'Arcy James and I first crossed paths when we shared the stage in Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman's glorious (and we thought Broadway Bound) Harmony nearly twenty years ago. Even then he'd already established himself as a bona fide Broadway and Off Broadway star (Titanic, Sweet Smell of Success, The Wild Party, Carousel) but his accomplishments since then in theatre, TV and Hollywood have catapulted him straight into the hearts of millions of musical theatre lovers. Most recently seen on Broadway in Days of Wine and Roses, Brian is doing the most extraordinary work of his career (and THAT is saying something) and so generously takes time to sit with me and share memories and stories from one of the most prolific careers out there. Please enjoy my chat with the nicest man in show business, Mr. Brian d'Arcy James!
Who Were The Comedian Harmonists? The True Story Behind Broadway's Harmony
“Who Were The Comedian Harmonists? The True Story Behind Broadway's Harmony” is a podcast produced by Harmony: A New Musical and Broadway News. Songs In This Episode (from Harmony): "Overture" “Stars In The Night” Guests In This Episode (in order of appearance): Warren Carlyle Beowulf Boritt Peggy Eisenhauer Dan Moses Schreier Linda Cho Ricky Lurie Mentioned In This Episode: Watch Broadway's Harmony perform "Rhapsody #20" Watch the entire titular song "Harmony" Watch the Comedian Harmonists perform together Learn More About The Comedian Harmonists: www.thecomedianharmonists.com Learn More About Harmony A New Musical: www.harmonyanewmusical.com In 1927, a young man in Germany placed an ad in the local paper: “Attention. Rare opportunity. Tenor, Bass (professional singer not over 25), musically talented, nice-sounding voices, for unique ensemble. Kindly give days and times when available [for rehearsals, etc.]” Out of that two-line ad, came one of the most celebrated music acts of the 20th century: the Comedian Harmonists. The internationally renowned vocal group made over 200 recordings, performed in over 150 concerts around the world and appeared in numerous films. They played the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Coliseum and Radio City Music Hall. And yet, for most, the name “Comedian Harmonists” doesn't ring a bell. How could that be? Well, the Comedian Harmonists rose to fame in the late 1920s and early 1930s in Germany — and half of its members were Jewish. Because of this, the Nazi regime designated the work of the Comedian Harmonists “degenerate art” and much of it was destroyed. Lost to history. But…not all of it. The little that there was inspired writer Bruce Sussman to dig into the story of the Comedian Harmonists and, with his artistic partner Barry Manilow, create a musical uncovering their music, artistry and stories for the world to know and remember. “Harmony” officially opened on Broadway November 13, 2023 at the Ethel Barrymore Theater . And yet, there is only so much history one can fit into a Broadway musical. As Bruce said… “I just needed to simplify, pair it down.” “There were so many things that I could have done, but I had to make choices. As Sondheim famously wrote, the choice may be wrong, but the choosing is right.” Harmony closed on February 4, 2024 but the lost history it resurrected is worth a closer look. In this podcast, “Who Were The Comedian Harmonists? The True Story Behind Broadway's Harmony”, we're digging deeper into the true story of the Comedian Harmonists. I'm your host, Ruthie Fierberg, executive editor of Broadway News. Over the course of this series, we'll dive into the full history of the Comedian Harmonists — it's more complicated than you think. We'll learn the details about each of the six famous singers — where they grew up, their musical specialty, their personal lives and what happened after their time with the group. A previous version of this episode misstated the parentage of Erich's wife, Fernande Holzamer. Fernande's father was a German tailor, her mother was a French homemaker. This has been corrected in the episode, as well. “Who Were The Comedian Harmonists? The True Story Behind Broadway's Harmony” is a podcast produced by Harmony: A New Musical and Broadway News. Songs In This Episode: “Stars In The Night” from Harmony: A New Musical “Harmony” from Harmony: A New Musical "Your Son Is Becoming a Singer" from Harmony: A New Musical Guests In This Episode (in order of appearance): Eric Peters, “Erich” in Harmony Jan Grübler, Historian Marc Alexander, Erich Collin's grandson Deborah Tint, Erich Collin's granddaughter Learn More About The Comedian Harmonists: www.thecomedianharmonists.com Learn More About Harmony A New Musical: www.harmonyanewmusical.com In 1927, a young man in Germany placed an ad in the local paper: “Attention. While Mickey-Jo was in New York, he was lucky enough to catch a performance of HARMONY, the musical by Bruce Sussman and Barry Manilow which sadly closed last weekend at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on Broadway. The show, which followed the historic career of 1920s vocal group The Comedian Harmonists, was first seen by audiences in the late 1990s but has taken more than two decades to make it to Broadway. Check out the new review for Mickey-Jo's brief thoughts on why the show was ultimately short-lived, who gave standout performances and whether or not he enjoyed it... • About Mickey-Jo: As one of the leading voices in theatre criticism on a social platform, Mickey-Jo is pioneering a new medium for a dwindling field. His YouTube channel: MickeyJoTheatre is the largest worldwide in terms of dedicated theatre criticism, where he also share features, news and interviews as well as lifestyle content for over 60,000 subscribers. Since establishing himself as a theatre critic he has been able to work internationally. BRUCE SUSSMAN received the 2022 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical for the Broadway show Harmony. With Jack Feldman, he co-authored the scores for Ted Tally's Coming Attractions (Outer Critics Circle Award) and Wendy Wasserstein's first musical, Miami, both produced by André Bishop at Playwrights Horizons. He also co-authored the score and book for Copacabana: The Musical, (Olivier Award nominee). His half century-long collaboration with Barry Manilow has produced over 200 songs that have been featured in numerous films & have been recorded by an array of artists, earning Grammy Awards & multiple Gold & Platinum records. We discuss: What is it like collaborating with Barry Manilow and how did that all unfold? When did you first get the desire to write, score & produce music? Who & what were your inspirations? Does writing the book for a show & scoring the music come naturally to you? What are the easy parts, what are the hard parts and what does it take to get it all done to your exacting standards? Is there a secret to your success? What advice would you offer someone else who needs a better roadmap to reach the same pinnacle of success that you have? The show's slogan is that HARMONY tells the extraordinary true story of the greatest entertainers the world would ever forget. There were 6 Comedian Harmonists. What made them so beloved at the time and why were they forgotten? What does the Broadway musical Harmony mean to you and can you tell our listeners exactly your role in the show is as the maestro behind the book and lyrics and also Barry Manilow's role with his original score in the show? What would you like audiences to take away from the intended meaning & message of the show & how you would like to see them feeling during & after the show? How long did it take for Harmony to get to Broadway & why the long and winding road that finally landed the show there. What are you most proud of? Anything you would change?
As a longtime collaborator with the legendary Barry Manilow, Sussman's success as a songwriter includes not only pop music juggernauts but also a litany of major animated film theme songs, musical books, and his most recent passion project and Broadway success, Harmony, A New Musical.Harmony is a compelling collaboration between the renowned Sussman and Manilow. It's been captivating audiences with a true story and real-life characters most of us know nothing about. The celebrated song-writing duo hopes to change that with an emotional stage experience that will finally grant the show's protagonists their rightful place in entertainment history.I had the pleasure of discussing this new endeavor with Sussman. He shared that it took years to complete, and for him, as a proud Jewish American, it was so much more than just another musical. A special thank you to Bruce for also allowing me a totally frivolous fanboy moment as I could not resist asking him about his iconic co-written Barry Manilow hit "Copacabana!"Follow Harmony, A New Musical on Instagram

This episode was recorded live at the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan on October 9, 2023. It is a conversation with creative and cast members of the Broadway musical, Harmony. They include book writer and lyricist Bruce Sussman, and performers Chip Zien, Julie Benko, Sierra Boggess, and Danny Kornfeld. The narrative of Harmony is set in the 1920s and 30s in Germany, a deeply unsettling time in history, and still the central characters found harmony, not only in the melodic sense but also as a diverse group coming together in partnership. It's an inspiring idea for us all to seek ways to live harmoniously with others. After all, harmony occurs when different sounds blend together.I hope you enjoy the following interview, and please check out the links below to two songs from the cast recording of Harmony. #829 - Jack Feldman The Jack Feldman Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? Life is but a dream, if only were here. Okay, I'm pretty sure that this is real life and not a fantasy, but I can tell you what I know for sure. I know that this is The Paul Leslie Hour and that you are welcome to it. I know this much too. We've got an interview from the archives with songwriter Jack Feldman. This is from quite a few years back, before Paul had a pretty nice microphone. I know, because he told me, he had a contraption to record phone calls for later radio broadcast. The results varied, but now you know. Here's what else you should know about our friend Jack. Jack Feldman is a Tony-award winning lyricist who has written many songs for theatre, recording artists, as well as animated motion pictures. Along with composer Alan Menken, Jack Feldman wrote the score for Newsies, which won a Tony in 2012. Did you know that? Okay, well know this: Jack Feldman has also had great success in the pop music world. With lyricist Bruce Sussman and composer Barry Manilow, Feldman wrote many songs for Barry Manilow including the classic "Copacabana (At the Copa).” Bet you know that one! It's worth knowing that other artists have recorded songs he has had a hand in writing including Wayne Newton and Bette Midler as well as several songs heard in Disney soundtracks. Whatdya know! Slowly, but surely our subscription drive on YouTube is growing. We really would love it if you'd join us there. It's free and fast. Go to Paul Leslie's channel on YouTube and subscribe! Now, let's play that interview with lyricist Jack Feldman. There's so much we need to know!
“I believe the world is a better place if there is more theatre in it. There is only more theatre in it if there are more people making it. So, I do everything I can to help inspire, educate people to make more theatre. Does that mean I can produce every show? Unfortunately not.” What's in this episode? Get a sneek peak into the brand new musical The Griswold's Family Vacation! What exactly is producing? How do you pick a city to do an out of town tryout? How does the industry treat multi-hyphenates? How are multi-hyphenates like small businesses? How does Ken commit to being an accessible producer? How Hal Prince inspired Ken by saying one simple thing. What is successful producing? Joy the Musical! “In the business world, if you invent a product – you are the creator of that thing. You are an artist. You just designed the thing – you made it out of nothing. And then you have to raise the money for it. So, you're producing it yourself. All those people that go on Shark Tank, they are raising the money, they are doing the things. No one says, “Ugh, how dare you!” No, that's what they do. That's what Sara Blakely had to do for Spanx, that's what Mark Zuckerberg had to do for Facebook – all of it. They create something and then they raise it – but in our industry people roll their eyes.” Ken Davenport (Producer) is a two-time Tony Award-winning Broadway producer whose credits include A Beautiful Noise, Once On This Island (Tony Award), The Play that Goes Wrong, Groundhog Day (Tony nomination), Deaf West Theatre's Spring Awakening (Tony nomination), It's Only a Play starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, Macbeth starring Alan Cumming, Godspell, Kinky Boots (Tony Award), The Visit (Tony nomination) as well the Off-Broadway productions of Altar Boyz, The Awesome 80s Prom and many more. Davenport's productions have been produced internationally in over 25 countries around the world. He was the Executive Producer for North America for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group and is the Theatrical Consultant for Primary Wave Music Publishing. His blog has been featured in every major publication around the world, from the New York Times to Vanity Fair. He conceived the best-selling boardgame Be A Broadway Star (available on Amazon) and he is an avid golfer. Ken is a Massachusetts native, raised in Sturbridge, MA, who grew up going to shows at the Colonial Theatre. He dedicates his career to his late father, Dr. Kenny Dipchand Hasija, an Indian immigrant who always dreamed about going into the theater but encouraged his son to do so instead. Other productions in development include Harmony by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman, The Griswolds' Broadway Vacation, Joy and The Ten. www.kendavenport.com Instagram: @kendavenportbway Learn more about your ad choices. This week, we're grabbing our passports. First we talk to Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman about their off-Broadway musical Harmony, which tells the true story of the Comedian Harmonists, a trailblazing troupe of Jewish-and-gentile entertainers in 1920s Germany. Professor Andy Markovits joins us to discuss his new memoir, The Passport as Home: Comfort in Rootlessness, about what he learned growing up as a Jew in Romania and Vienna before emigrating to the United States, and why he's chosen to embrace the idea of the rootless cosmopolitan, despite (or perhaps in spite of) the term's antisemitic origin. One of the most fun and most productive events we had this year was our “Take Charge of Your '21” Challenge in January. Over 500 TheaterMakers joined us to hear tips and strategies on how to have your best year yet from super successful people in the business. We learned how to crush writer's block, how to squeeze a few more hours into each day for your REAL work (not that day job work), how to increase your confidence . . . and more. We got such great feedback on this free event that we decided to do it again! But better.

About this episode: Before I crowdfunded Godspell, I had a thesis. “There are thousands of people out there who would love to invest in Broadway shows . . . they just don't know how to do it, or who to talk to.” Sure enough, when we announced our plans for Godspell, thousands of leads poured in. In between placing all those return calls I remember thinking, “Huh, will you look at that . . . I got this one right.” Of course, not all those people invested (in the end we had about 750 investors), but thousands expressed interest and proved my thesis correct. And all those thousands of people had questions. Five years later, people still have questions about investing in Broadway shows. As I've spoken to more and more potential investors, I've noticed that many of the questions are the same. That's why I've created this FAQ for Broadway Investing. So whether you're a potential Broadway Investor looking to dip your toes into our theatrical waters, or whether you're a Producer looking to raise money for your show, I think you'll find these Qs and their appropriate As helpful. I could talk to Bruce Sussman forever. He's full of positivity, energy and enthusiasm—all the time, and never in an annoying way. You just can't have a bad day if part of it includes “The Sussdog.” For many years he was the weekend weather presence for KGW—filing in for Zaffino and Salesky on the evenings and mornings. There's a section in this conversation where Bruce and I explore his assignment of hosting KGW's local ripoff of “American idol.” He was great in that role but not without an image change and the challenges of hosting a TV three-ring circus. For my women-in-broadcasting friends, Bruce had to live through an on-air hairstyle change. “Oh the humanity!” Bruce eventually became lead meteorologist for KOIN. These days he's a reporter and spokesperson for the cyber security industry.
Things have changed since May of 2020. Shoot, things have changed since yesterday! But since May of 2020, when I first posted my “What The Broadway Recovery Will Look Like” series? Well, dang it, can any of you have imagined that we'd only have one Broadway show running a year later? Not me. Not me. Now that we've been through the great theatrical drought of 2020 (thanks, Covid!), I thought it was time to revise my prediction. Because, in case I didn't mention it. Things have ch-ch-ch-changed. I arrived in New York City during the Golden Age of Off-Broadway. Forever Plaid, Nunsense, And The World Goes Round, Cryptogram, Family Secrets, and more, were a few of the shows running in theaters under 499 seats . . . in commercial productions! And many actually recouped! At the beginning of the pandemic, I called everyone I knew for advice. I'm talking big time theater people, as well as big time business people. I got amazing advice. And it reminded me how important it was to ask for advice from others who are at places in their lives where you want to be. (And not just from a business “producer's perspective” . . . but from a family perspective, a health perspective, a spiritual perspective, and more.) One of the best pieces of advice I got was . . . “Ken, the people and companies who are going to come out of this ahead are the ones who are going to make use of this time.” Referenced in this episode: The TheaterMakers Facebook Group: www.facebook.com/groups/theatermakersstudio Continue the conversation: www.instagram.com/kendavenportbway The Producer's Perspective: www.theproducersperspetive.com About the podcast: After 6 years of podcasting with one style, we're shaking it up here - no guests! If you've been following The Olympics this year, or if you're on the internet, you probably heard Simone Biles withdrew from an individual all-around gymnastics competition at the Tokyo Olympics in an effort to focus on her mental health and well-being, a decision which came one day after she removed herself from the team final. In the early 2000s, I met with one of the most powerful people in Hollywood. We discussed the differences between the business models of theater and film. How Hollywood owned scripts instead of licensed them. How producers in Hollywood became hired guns after they proved themselves. When I was in college at Tisch, I, like every other student at NYU, tried to get into nightclubs on the weekend. And for some reason, the fancy door people, with their super chic outfits, always turned me away. In hindsight, it might have something to do with my khaki pants from The Gap, white shirt from The Gap and blue blazer . . . from JC Penney. I did get into one. Once. One of the ladies from my acting class at Strasberg took pity on me, and escorted me past the velvet rope on her arm. (You know who you are, and I'm still thankful.) When I got inside, well, things got worse. Listen to this week's episode to find out what happened AND how a nightclub inspired me to create a new place for the cool theater people. Sitting on the other side of the table is something that every actor should do. It's incredibly educational and inspirational because frankly, you realize that while there are lots and lots of people who call themselves actors, there's a much smaller group of actors (and talent is only a small part of that definition, by the by). Since so few actors get a chance to sit where producers and directors sit, here are my 10 tips on how to have a better audition experience. It has been 10 years (!) since I crowdfunded Godspell. It remains one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done in this business. It took two years to put together. It took three law firms. I had to pass a securities exam. Oh, and let me tell you when this SEC slaps your wrist in the midst of your offering, you lose some sleep. But, like most difficult things, it was also one of the best things I ever did for my business. And my life. Not only did we fund the production, and help launch the careers of some superstars, but I’m also still friends with many of “People of Godspell”, which is what we called our Producers and Investors (we had over 730 of them!). We created a family. And it still exists. (That’s pretty common with Godspell, actually, as anyone in it can attest.) After we successfully crowdfunded the show, using an old regulation called a “Reg A,” Congress passed The Jobs Act . . . which made it MUCH easier for businesses to crowdfund. (Bad timing on my part!) Everyone predicted an explosion of this type of microfinancing in all industries . . . Broadway and Off-Broadway included. And it didn’t happen. I don’t know of ONE Broadway or Off-Broadway production to utilize the new “Regulation CF” since it was passed. Why? Here are three reasons why. As the theater comes back to life, marketing is going to be more important than ever before. Are revivals an endangered species? What do we do with the beloved classics? What replaces revivals if they go away? Are new musicals the most reliable way to recoup (the measurement of how successful a show is)? I unpack all of this and more in this episode. In February, Whitney Wolfe Herd became the youngest female billionaire on the planet. And she did it by breaking into one of the most competitive markets around . . . online dating. Whenever anyone breaks through ceilings like Whitney, the first thing I do is jump up and down for them and tell as many people as I can. Then I try to learn from them, and how they bust through the barrier. . . and then tell as many people about that so they can learn from it too. I am responding to the NEW protocols released by Actors Equity Association for the return of live theater. As reported by Phillip Boroff (formerly of Bloomberg News and now of his own Broadway Journal), those protocols include things like: Mass transport cannot be used. A private car and driver must be provided for every AEA member reporting to/from rehearsal (Uber and Lyft services do not qualify). Members must be put up in hotels if they don’t live alone. 3 required tests before rehearsals begin, each of which must be paid for by the Producer and cannot be covered by the Actor’ Health Plans, even if they have coverage. And a lot more. You can read all of the posted guidelines, right on the AEA website. (They’re incredibly well organized and separated by the type of production a Producer might consider in the near future (indoor, outdoor, etc.) If you want to read more of my thoughts on these new protocols, go to my blog. Goodness glaciers! It may be seventy degrees in LA, but on this episode of The Bluth, the Whole Bluth, and Nothing But the Bluth, we're getting chilly with The Pebble and the Penguin. We've been thinking about this episode since the beginning, and it's finally time to answer the burning question: is Pebble a disappointment, a cult classic, or something else entirely? It's another episode of The Bluth, the Whole Bluth, and Nothing But the Bluth, and this time we think we may have watched A Troll in Central Park. It's all sort of a blur. What did we talk about? Who can say? Probably a little about Dom DeLuise, a little about magic shape-shifting dream boats, and there may have been a witch involved. Talking flowers? You'll just have to listen and find out!
