Roy Bliss grew up in Worland, Wyoming where his father was in the Culligan Soft Water business. A neighbor, Tom Mitchell, read about cable television in a magazine. Roy's father owned an airplane and Tom asked if Roy's father would “fly around to see if they could find a TV signal, line-of-sight”, which they found coming from Billings, Montana. And that was the beginning of the cable TV business for the Bliss family.Roy was very young when he helped his father bring cable to Worland. In time, Wayne Swearingen, an oilman who saw the potential for cable television, asked Roy to join him in Tulsa. Wayne was part owner of Tulsa Cable, which bought a microwave company, United Video. Becoming president of United Video, Roy distributed Chicago's WGN TV via satellite nationwide. Forgive the clickbait title. The episode should probably actually be called "The (Lack of) Problem of Induction" because we primarily cover Popper's refutation of induction in C&R Chapter 8. This episode starts our deep dive into answering the question "What is the difference between a good philosophical explanation and a bad explanation?" To answer that question we go over Karl Popper's "On the Status of Science and of Metaphysics" from his book Conjectures and Refutations Chapter 8. In this chapter Popper first explains why he believes 'there is no such thing as induction' (from page 18 of Logic of Scientific Discovery) by offering his historical and logical refutation of induction. In this episode we go over Popper's refutation of induction in chapter 8 of C&R in detail and then compare it to Tom Mitchell's (of Machine Learning fame) argument of the 'futility of bias free learning.' We show that Mitchell's and Popper's arguments are actually the same argument even though Mitchell argues for the existence of a kind of induction as used in machine learning. Bruce argues that the difference is not a conceptual or theoretical difference but just a difference in use of language and that the two men are actually conceptually fully in agreement. This makes machine learning both a kind of 'induction' (though not the kind Popper refuted) and also gives machine learning an interesting and often missed relationship with critical rationalism. Then Bruce asks the most difficult question of all: "Is there anyone out there in the world other than me that is interested in exploring how to apply Karl Popper's epistemology to machine learning like this?" As I mention in the podcast, I'm shocked Critical Rationalists aren't referencing Mitchell's argument constantly because it is so strongly critical rationalist in nature. IIED has launched a 'Manifesto for a thriving world' and the need for new responses to a range of compounding crises, greater uncertainty and growing injustice. In this episode, the chair of IIED's board of trustees Tara Shine and trustee John Taylor discuss the intitute's plans for the future and changing ways of working. Tom Mitchell, IIED's executive director, stresses the importance of IIED being outward looking and being grounded in evidence and including the knowledge and voices of Indigenous Peoples and local communities. No one wanted to lose Lachie Schultz but the fan's reaction at the time was way over the top! Who is offering up a 1st rounder to get him back? Time to Restump Podcast the Friday night Pie fight.It wasn't necessarily in a Don Corleone type of manner but Collingwood made us an offer we couldn't refuse, and they probably didn't have to! If only to stoke some retaliatory fire it is worth mentioning, albeit with some cherry picking embellishment, that Lachie whined that he felt disrespected, he cried victim and he packed his bags, took his bat and ball and went home! As we said at the time, it's disappointing to see him walk out the door but he was never irreplaceable and we're extremely comfortable replacing him with Collingwood's first pick this year.  Enough water has gone under the Lachie bridge now so it's time to bind together and invoke the George Bush's drum beating war cry, “You're either with us, or you're with the Collingwood terrorists.” I know… I was surprised Bush said that as well, but it's true… take my word for it and don't look it up. Lachie chose the terrorists so the sympathy time is over!The Blake Acres back of the head punching Lachie Schultz shenanigans aside, this game is a huge opportunity for us to peg one of the wins back that we shouldn't have lost recently. Collingwood are travelling ok but now is the time you want to get them, so we have to take advantage of it.Jordan DeGoey, Tom Mitchell, Jamie Elliot, Will Hoskin-Elliot and Jeremy Howe are all absent. That's a shedload of talent and experience. Further advantageous for us is the fact they're playing 2 debutants and a further four players have a total of 15 games between them. We welcome back Sean Darcy and combined with Luke Jackson, it looks a powerful and versatile combination that should prove far to superior for Darcy Cameron and Mason Cox.Corey Wagner also makes a well-earned return but we lose Freddy to concussion and unfortunately for Paddy Voss, for team balance and nothing more, he steps aside.We're going in as $1.72 favourites and, when you look at the two teams on paper, it is difficult to argue that shouldn't be the case. But on paper, goal accuracy doesn't enter the equation! IIED's Hidden Handbrake campaign aims to reveal and explain the bureaucratic, political, legal and practical barriers to countries taking effective action in response to climate change. They must be brought out into the open, challenged and removed.
