David Beasley, former Executive Director of the World Food Program, discusses global food security and international development. Beasley highlights the progress made in the past 200 years but emphasizes the current challenges and the need for strategic and effective international development. He highlights the importance of stabilizing environments, providing hope, and addressing issues like mass migration, famines, war, conflict, COVID implications, and climate shocks. Beasley shares insights into his messaging strategy to secure funding, stressing the cost-effectiveness of investing in international aid for both humanitarian and national security reasons. This episode is co-hosted by the Society for International Development - United States (https://sidw.org/). TIMESTAMPS: [01:47] Discussion on global food security and international development challenges. [20:21] The potential consequences of the conflict in Ukraine on fertilizer production, fuel costs, and food prices globally. [22:21] Concerns about the distraction of war and conflict affecting fundraising for humanitarian programs. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Beasley emphasizes the need for strategic and effective international development to address current global challenges, including mass migration, famines, war, conflict, COVID implications, and climate shocks. The messaging strategy for securing funding involves demonstrating the cost-effectiveness of international aid, aligning with national security interests, and emphasizing success stories. The Ukraine conflict poses significant risks to global food security due to disruptions in fertilizer production, increased fuel costs, and the destabilization of food-producing regions. The impact extends beyond the immediate conflict zone to affect vulnerable populations worldwide. He also served as a state representative from 1981 until 1995. Early life Beasley was born in Lamar, South Carolina. He is the son of Richard Lee Beasley and Jacqueline (Blackwell) Beasley. He graduated from Lamar High School in 1975, then attended the Capitol Page School in Washington, DC while serving as a page in the U.S. Congress.[2] Early political career Elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives at age 20, Beasley transferred from Clemson University to the University of South Carolina where he received a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies in 1979 and a J.D. from the School of Law in 1983.[3] Beasley was a member of the South Carolina House representing the Society Hill area from 1979 until 1995, serving as majority whip from 1985 to 1986 and the majority leader from 1987 to 1989.[4] He served as the youngest Speaker pro tempore and Majority Leader in the nation.[5] During the 1991–92 legislative session Beasley switched to the Republican Party.[6] During the 1994 election for governor, both Beasley and his Democratic opponent Lieutenant Governor Nick Theodore faced tough primary opposition within their respective parties. Beasley defeated his toughest competitor, former congressman and state senator Arthur Ravenel Jr., in both the primary and run-off, and went on to win the general election by a narrow margin of 50%–48%.[6] Governor South Carolina had a strong economy while Beasley was governor, with unemployment at a record-low 3.5% in 1998. [7] Beasley often made known his Christ-centered beliefs and conservatism in a state known for its strong ties to Christianity and conservative politics.[8] Beasley strongly opposed gambling, which was legal in South Carolina until 2002.[9] At the time, many gas stations, convenience stores, and poker "casinos" were established across the state, and as Beasley supported legislation that would outlaw gambling, the video poker industry generated "Ban Beasley" billboards and radio ads.[10] Until 2000, the Confederate flag flew atop the South Carolina State House. It had been raised over the Capitol dome in celebration of the Civil War centennial. This celebration started in 1961 with the raising of the Army of Tennessee Battle Flag over the State House Dome. The Army of Tennessee Battle Flags were also displayed in the inner chambers of the SC Senate and SC House of Representatives.

Full Hour | In today's second hour, Dom continues the Dom Giordano Program by revisiting Governor Josh Shapiro's thoughts on capital punishment with a very important sentencing on the horizon, playing back a clip from when he changed tune on the issue, turning against it with the justification that his 10-year-old son convinced him. Then, Dom tells about a push in Society Hill to shun Wawa for the neighborhood, blaming the company for allowing vagrants to take over their beloved Head House Square. This frustrates Dom, telling that it's just another example for Progressives to skirt by without blame, suggesting their anger should be directed toward policies enacted by Larry Krasner green-lighting rampant shop-lifting. Then, Dom welcomes in media critic Scott Cronick, who offers a glowing review of the new animated Spider-Man film, suggesting that it may be the greatest animated comic book film of all time. Also, Scott tells that he too will be traveling to Italy separately from Dom, and previews what's coming up in Atlantic City. (Photo by Getty Images)

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
On a January night in 1897, a crowded Episcopal church in Philadelphia was the stage for a curious ceremony. In the Church of the Evangelists, located in south Society Hill just ten or so blocks from Independence Hall, a gaggle of clerics unveiled a life-size painting of Charles I, King of England and–so far as the clerics were concerned–saint and martyr. Then Williams Stevens Perry, the Episcopal Bishop of Iowa, ascended to the pulpit to explain to the assembled multitude how Charles I, far from being an absolutist and enemy of liberty, had laid the foundations of American political order. This striking scene begins Michael Connolly's description of a curious moment in the history of Anglo-American political thought and sentiment, a resurgent Jacobite movement that championed the cause of the Stuart monarchs as a means of opposing the corruptions of the modern age. It begins his new book Jacobitism in Britain and the United States, 1880-1910. Michael Connolly is Professor of History at Purdue University Northwest; this is his third time on the podcast. For Further Investigation Michael Connolly has previously talked on the podcast about American presidents, way back in Episode 2 (!!!) and then in Episode 60 We touched on the execution of Charles I in Episode 127, which focused on the escape of two of the men who signed his death warrant into the wilds of Connecticut

Philadelphia is a whacky wild city but none the more wild than three little stories of the strange and unusual I have here - The Swiss Cheese Pervert - a man is caught soliciting or trying to solicit woman with ... Swiss Cheese? The Bread Squeezer - another man caught damaging over 7000.00 worth of baked good by continually squeezing them, claiming it was all about freshnessand finallyplastic utensils all along the upper echelon Society Hill section of Philly? What is this world coming to? Also - I sing my famous song again - so listen in as we continue to investigate the wild and weird only in Philadelphia1

Three Victorian Philadelphia sisters helped make Philadelphia what it is today. The oldest Mary Channing Wister petitioned for music in the public schools, more public parks for all, and placement of the Broad Street line underground. Frances Anne Wister was a founder of the Philadelphia Orchestra and became the city's patron saint of preservation; without her there would likely be no Old City or Society Hill. The youngest sister Ella Wister Haines got a late start on her career but became the public face and voice of Philadelphia Electric Company for 20 years, especially during the Great Depression. All three of these women are buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery. I tell their stories today.

When concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated and the stay-at-home orders went into place in March of 2020, my entire family was suddenly at home a lot more than usual. My dog Bailey, a generally happy-go-lucky eight-year-old Shichon, immediately knew something was wrong. He seemed spooked, he acted stressed and he watched us more closely. Bailey might have even picked up on our general concern as parents - I mean, remember the early days of the pandemic when everything seemed to happen all at once and confusion was rampant? I became curious about Bailey's response and wanted to know more. Dr. Carlo Siracusa is a veterinarian and associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Ryan Veterinary Hospital. He studies animal behavior and seeks to understand our pets' stress level and why certain animals can turn aggressive. The Society Hill resident owns a cat Elsa and yes, Elsa also noticed a drastic change in her owner's work life and even became confused. Bailey and I spoke to Dr. Siracusa through a Zoom connection on April 8, 2020. I asked most of the questions while Bailey sat on my lap and occasionally ate treats. In this podcast: Dr. Siracusa introduces himself and explains his research at Ryan Veterinary Hospital (1:30), I introduce him to my dog Bailey (2:35), Dr. Siracusa asks about my experience with Bailey when our family observed the stay-at-home order (2:55), he explains why Bailey began acting different (4:45), how changes in the outdoor environment can also trigger stress in pets (6:40), why some pets may not like a sudden boost in attention from their owners (7:00), why it is important for pets to have their safe spaces and not be in a constant "state of activation" (9:15), how a drastic change in the home environment can kick in a pet's "survival mode" (9:45), how pets need quiet time at the end of the day, just like humans (11:15), why a dog or cat's resting time can be very different from their owners' (13:15), best advice: make sure you give your pet some space (14:00), Dr. Siracusa explains how his cat Elsa responded to a change in his routines (16:35), Bailey and I bid farewell and thank Dr. Siracusa for his time (18:20).

Our last two episodes were pretty intense, so this episode we decided to keep it a little lighter and bring it all back to Philly. Stephanie starts us off with the story of the Boy in the Box. In 1957, the body of an unidentified child was found in a JC Penny bassinet box in the woods of the Fox Chase neighborhood of Philadelphia. While the case has brought on sporadic media attention through the last six decades, it remains open to this day. Sarah tells us about the Hag of Pine Street. Possibly a ghost of one of our two hosts from the future who went back in time, she chases children and happy couples through the Society Hill neighborhood. Her only motivation seems to be to wipe the smiles off of their faces. Our stories are kept short while we butter you up with banter, spoilers about horror movies Sarah has never seen, and educate you with some Philadelphia culture. Listen to E18 Get Off My Jawn! Stand By Me - A Tribute To My Father, Ben E. King On the heels of the song's performance at Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex's royal wedding, the recording of "Stand By Me" was 6 months in the making. Who could have known that these two spectacular events would occur simultaneously. In conjunction with Society Hill, we are proud to release the definitive 21st century version of "Stand By Me", by the heir to the Ben E. King throne... his son, Sonofa. Originally recorded in 1960 by legendary singer-songwriter Ben E. King, "Stand By Me" has been covered by more than 400 artists, from Otis Redding to John Lennon to Tracy Chapman. In 2012 it was estimated that the song's royalties had topped $US 22.8 million, making it the sixth highest-earning song at that time. Then in 2015 King's original version was inducted into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress, as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant", just under five weeks before his death. Later in the year, the 2015 lineup of The Drifters recorded it, in tribute to King. Performing professionally since the age of 8, Sonofa King continues to share his inherent talents with the world, and to fully embrace the legacy of being the son of a King with the release of his new album: "Stand By Me - A Tribute To My Father". https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/stand-by-me-a-tribute-to-my-father-ben-e-king/1387536623 http://www.itsezbreezy.com/sonofakingstandbyme/ITSEZBREEZY …
EPISODE 50: PARANORMAL PHILADELPHIA Philadelphia is one of the oldest cities in America, and it is home to many disembodied denizens who refuse to vacate its colonial charm for the afterlife. To celebrate episode 50, #Philly's horror authors & hosts T. Fox Dunham and Phil Thomas tell old and new stories of the many ghosts who haunt Penn's city along the Delaware. They narrate two stories researched from several sources: the story of an old woman who refuses to leave her home on Pine Street in Society Hill and the tragic tale of abuse and murder at the notorious Byberry Mental Hospital. In addition, they discuss several haunted locations. Did you know that the lovely Washington Square used to be a potter's field and thousand of dead are buried beneath its fountains and trees? Phil shares his #paranormal encounter at the Poe House, the #Philadelphia home of Edgar Allan Poe. And many more #Philly ghost tales in what is only our most recent installment of local legends. We also have more horror fiction! T. Fox Dunham reads part III of Die Musik des Teufels, a tale of mad Nazi magic and a desperate father who would do anything to save his son. It was published in Savage Beasts from Grey Matter Press, editors Anthony Rivera and Sharon Lawson. We also play a song with a reggae beat from the tormented mind of DR. Tropical, renowned magician and musician: "Wizard Blues." Thank you for joining us as we celebrate 50 episodes! Much more horror to come. Follow us at @pfwhatafraidof and check out our website at www.whatareyouafraidofpodcast.com for expanded material on each show and our archive of true ghost experiences each narrated by our voice actors.
