On episode 235, Emily Kircher-Morris talks with somatic-centered psychotherapist Mary Martin about the benefits of somatic therapy for neurodivergent people. They discuss how this body-based approach complements traditional talk therapy by focusing on the body-brain connection, and about the importance of interoception and co-regulation. They describe strategies like body awareness, movement, and breathwork to help clients regulate their nervous systems and process emotions. With school starting soon, we have an opportunity for educators to learn more about 2e students by taking our course, Strategies for Supporting Twice-Exceptional Students. It's great for CE credits for educators, and the course will be enlightening to anyone curious about helping 2e students thrive in the classroom. Mary Martin is a somatic-centered psychotherapist who uses trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches in her therapy with both children and adults. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance Performance and Psychology from Oklahoma City University, which would later help her discover her purpose and passion for somatic-centered therapy. This led her to her Master's Degree in Somatic Counseling Psychology from Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado with a concentration in Dance and Movement Therapy. Mary's experience includes working in early childhood education with autistic and developmentally delayed children, children who have experienced trauma and neglect, and private practice settings. "When I talk about pleasure and embodiment, I'm talking about your unique individual moment that feels true for you in your body. Not what you're being sold. And so I think that, you know, when we're talking about oppression and social justice, and I say something like, I believe pleasure is the antidote, I actually mean it.” —Terra Anderson In so many yoga spaces and in the wellness world in general, we talk a lot about embodiment. But what does it actually mean to “be embodied”? Terra Lyn Anderson has devoted their life to being a conduit for the healing connection between body and mind for both individuals and the collective. While pursuing their graduate degree in Somatic Counseling Psychology at Naropa University, Terra began to envision what the healing potential of embodiment would look like on a large societal scale, with people aware and empowered by both thought and feeling, attuned to one another, in love with and trusting of their own bodies, and able to consciously and intentionally regulate their nervous systems. Inspired by the vision of an embodied, empowered and connected society, Terra directed their focus to studying the physical impact and healing of oppression trauma. They pursued supplemental trainings in social power differentials, racial justice, intersectionality, embodied sexuality, gender diversity, and organizational transformation. Terra believes that social justice is inherently tied to the body, as is oppression and trauma. Their unique approach to healing, education and activism is characterized by a commitment to empowering the relationship between body and mind. In this conversation, Terra and Tristan discuss: The definition of embodiment and the role of privilege in this conversation How embodiment connects with our consent practices, and our abilities and ways in to hearing a clear ‘yes' or ‘no' The role of embodiment, and pleasure, in trauma healing and in dismantling systems and challenging oppression …and more Check out Terra's work on their website and Instagram and learn more about their co-facilitated offerings with Weeze Doran on Weeze's website. Sabrina Santa Clara, LPC, R-DMT, CIFST, CPIT, RYT and I discuss the importance of training regarding touch in therapy. Touch can be so healing yet we receive little to no training on how to integrate physical touch in healthy and appropriate ways and how to document these interactions. Sabrina also discusses the healing power of Psychedelic Integration Therapy. Sabrina Santa Clara is a licensed Colorado Counselor and somatic psychotherapist, though she works internationally as an educator, trauma-informed transpersonal coach and spiritual midwife. She was a massage therapist for many years and earned her Master's in Somatic Counseling Psychology from the Buddhist-influenced Naropa University. The dearth of touch training in her program led her to design her course on the Ethics and Fundamentals of Psychotherapeutic Touch™, a comprehensive Certification training on the use of Touch in Therapy. Sabrina is also a psychedelic integration therapist and has designed a training in Self Psychedelic Integration™ which she will be offering for the first time in London this summer. Self Psychedelic Integration combines Internal Family Systems, Harm Reduction Psychedelic Integration, somatic psychology, Creative and Expressive Arts and neo-shamanistic ritual. While this training is helpful for both clinicians and psychedelic sitters, it is aimed at making integration tools available to the solitary medicine journeyer.  Sabrina is kicker of boxes and breaker of meaningless rules, and a staunch advocate for adherence to rules rooted in sanity, care and high ethical standards. She is a bicultural, bilingual, gender-fluid, artist, poet and dancer who lives in the in-between spaces. She has an affinity for working with therapists and coaches, spiritual seekers, and people who experience themselves as “outside the norm.”OFFERS & HELPFUL LINKS:Sabrina's websiteFree E-book "16 Skill to Help You Calm Down: Moving from freaked-out to Chilled-out”Counseling Community TikTokJennifer Agee coaching pageCounseling Community Facebook communityCounseling Community InstagramAlaskan Cruise: Experiential Therapeutic Intervention Training for Therapists June 3-10, 2023Portugal Marketing Retreat October 2-7, 2023

I am at a speaking event with my friend Chris who is an incredible photographer. As we're chatting, I ask him, “How do you take the amazing pictures that you take?”  He says, “It's easy. If you want to take interesting pictures, be interesting.”  Whoa. It sounds so simple, and yet at that moment it completely changed my perspective. It's a lesson I apply to storytelling too. The more you design your life to be interesting, the more you give yourself the opportunity to collect better stories for your arsenal. And as you collect those stories, your creativity kicks in. My guest Mari Reisberg, MA, LPC knows all about tapping into creativity in storytelling and beyond. She joins me today to cover questions like: How can creativity influence the stories you tell? What's the link between mundane activities (or even doing nothing) and creative thinking? And what questions can you ask yourself to transform into a more creative storyteller? Listen in as we take a deep dive into preconceived notions about creativity and the role that playfulness and safety play in creative expression. What you will learn in this episode: How to tap into your innate creativity as a storyteller What you can do to bring more play into your life Why safety is the foundation of creativity Who is Mari? Raised in Portland, Oregon, Mari Reisberg, MA, LPC has always embraced life creatively. She's a licensed professional counselor, performer, podcaster, and creativity coach who's lived in New York City, studied angel therapy in Hawaii, sang with an Irish band, and taught graduate-level psychology classes. Through it all, she's continued her own creativity and personal growth journey while being a lifelong mindfulness and meditation student and teacher. Mari also holds a BFA in Acting from the Hartt School and an MA in Somatic Counseling Psychology, Dance/Movement Therapy from Naropa University. In this episode Terra and Weeze break down what’s required of each of us to ensure we’re moving toward collective liberation. A part of that is understanding how to work with our privileged and marginalized identities. Just because someone holds a marginalized identity doesn’t absolve them of perpetuating systems of oppression, so it’s important for each of us to learn how to listen and follow, as well as understand when it’s time to lead depending on the situation and what we’re currently standing up for. ABOUT WEEZE Louiza Doran, known and referred to as Weeze, is a cis-het Amazigh* female identifying human who uses she/her/they/them pronouns. She’s known as a coach, podcast host, advocate, agent of change, strategist and educator (to name a few) but is ultimately a compassionate provocateur that is out to help folks uncover their path of possibility.   ABOUT TERRA ANDERSON Terra Lyn Anderson MA, R-DMT, LPC Registered Intern, has devoted their life to being a conduit for the healing connection between body and mind for both individuals and the collective. IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT Why having a marginalized identity doesn’t absolve someone from reproducing systems of oppression and being held accountable.  The art of decentering and learning how to operate within our privileged and marginalized identities. How privilege affects the body and what it does to us when it’s unhealed and unacknowledged. The emotional labor and toll it takes on those with marginalized identities to hold space and educate. CALL TO ACTION Do your work to separate biological sex from gender identitiy. Separating anatomy and body parts from the gender identity that a person holds, so we can transform the conversation around gender. Most of the frustration, pain, and suffering that we humans experience is due to a lack of understanding about how to experience, manage, and express our emotions. What if you had a manual to release long-held feelings that no longer serve you? You're in luck. On this interview, I speak with Leadership Coach Joie Seldon about her upcoming book, "Emotions: An Owner's Manual". We discuss the profound value all emotions hold - even those we label "negative". We talk about the importance of business owners understanding how to navigate their own emotional terrain so they can effectively deal with conflict in their companies. Joie emphasizes that the result of this important work is less stress, more self-confidence, greater self-trust, and coming home to your true self. For 15 years, Joie Seldon, M.A. has been coaching and empowering executives and project managers at Fortune 500 companies, CEO’s, and entrepreneurs, to identify and quickly solve problems, improve employee engagement and reduce their personal as well as team stress. A master improvisation teacher, Joie was a professional actor, acting teacher and workshop leader for thirty years in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Improvisation teaches you how to think on your feet and deal with whatever is thrown at you, whether it’s a disaster or a sudden opportunity. Many people think that acting is a form of pretending. That may be the case when the acting is bad. However, great acting is the art of human behavior. It is the ability to be real. She has created numerous workshops that teach business professionals to how express themselves in authentic and compelling ways, whether in networking, public speaking, being interviewed or leading a meeting. Joie holds a master’s degree in Somatic Counseling Psychology from John F. Kennedy University. Somatic psychology has a scientific foundation that incorporates aspects of neuroscience, molecular biology and the autonomic nervous system. Her book, “Emotions: an Owner’s Manual” will be released next month.
