Clinician Paula Scatoloni returns to the Groundless Ground 6 years later, to share the evolution of her clinical work which now integrates sound therapies and energy medicine techniques along with somatic psychotherapy. This is a fascinating episode covering several kinds of sound modalities, such as: The Safe and Sound Protocol a unique listening experience that has been filtered through a patented, evidence-based algorithm highlighting specific sound frequencies which help regulate the autonomic nervous system and stimulate the vagus nerve. Binaural beats and Bio-lateral beats whose proponents assert these sound waves enhance certain beneficial brainwaves, though those claims lack good clinical research. And Biofield Tuning which utilizes a tuning fork to identify and resolve energetic disturbances in the subtle body nervous system. While all of this may sound far-fetched, Paula and I try our best to present it with the clarity and levelheadedness you deserve. Paula Scatoloni LCSW  holds a degree in social work and is certified in Somatic Experiencing, Biofield Tuning, Reiki, Brain Spotting, and many other forms of somatic therapy. She integrates her Western framework with earth-based practices for sound journeying and her gifts in vibrational healing

Happy Satiated Saturday! Satiated Podcast is back!!!! One thing you're going to receive in the upcoming interviews is more exploration of nutrition. When I went through my Master's Degree in Somatic Psychotherapy, I was consistently surprised that there was no class on nutrition. This feels like a missing piece in the therapeutic world. I feel therapists would benefit from being aware that a person's nutritional status can also be contributing to their symptoms. This includes one of the many reasons why you might be binging. Binge eating isn't just a reaction to emotional or nervous system dysregulation. It can also be triggered by nutrient depletion from living in a trauma response. When your body is stuck in a state of chronic stress, it tries to compensate for the lost nutrients and minerals. Binging is your body's best strategy to get its nutritional needs met.In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I talk about: the connection between trauma and nutrient depletion what nutrients get depleted because of ongoing high cortisol levelsa baby step you can take to start to be in a new relationship with nutrition You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/trauma-response-and-your-binge-eatingAs a reminder, doors to the Somatic Eating® Program are officially open!!! Happy Satiated Saturday! There were two tracks at my graduate school in Somatic Psychotherapy. One was the Body Psychotherapy track, which is what I took, and the other was Dance Movement Therapy (DMT). The classes that I was able to take in DMT sometimes made me wish I had chosen that track of studies. The fitness culture has warped our beliefs around the purpose of movement. I've had clients say to me what's the point of moving their bodies if they're not trying to change their bodies. I get it. Physical movement has become synonymous with sculpting and shaping the body to look a certain way and that's it. The importance of physical movement though is so much more. The word emotion comes from the Latin word emovere: to be moved. Many body oriented practitioners state that the issues get lodged in our tissues. It is through movement that you can digest, assimilate, and move emotion through your body.In this week's episode, we're going to explore the movement modalities that have impacted the field of somatics. I've shared on the podcast before that I've struggled with emotional eating, and I know I'm not alone. In this episode, Stephanie Mara Fox, a Somatic Nutritional Counselor and Mentor, is sharing her expertise on how we can tune into our body's cues to break our patterns of emotional eating while still giving ourselves comfort and safety. If you struggle with turning to food for comfort, this is the episode for you! Stephanie Mara Fox, MA, CMBEC, CHC, CYT, is a Somatic Nutritional Counselor and Mentor with a Master's Degree in Somatic Psychotherapy. She is the creator of Somatic Eating®, a body-oriented, sensation focused therapeutic approach to eating. She's supported women, coaches, and wellness professionals all over the world, helping them to heal from disordered eating patterns, binge eating, emotional eating, chronic dieting, and body image concerns.  Connect with Stephanie: Stephanie's Website Somatic Eating® Website Satiated Podcast Instagram Facebook Linkedin TikTok Contact: support@stephaniemara.com You can receive 50% off Stephanie's Intro to Somatic Eating® Mini Course here: bit.ly/3YQi5Td (discount already applied) Check out my anti-anxiety and meditation journal, “Bring Your Shit to Light: You deserve more than what your limiting beliefs are telling you!” on Amazon!   Some key takeaways from this episode include: “Somatic” means relating to the body as distinct from the mind. While a lot of remedies focus on our thoughts first, somatic practices have us pay attention to sensations in our bodies to tune in to what it might be telling us. If you're stuck in a pattern of emotional eating, recognize that you're looking for safety in a time of stress in your body. Don't judge yourself or beat yourself up. Instead, look for other ways to give yourself that feeling of safety that isn't food related. As you're working through healthier coping mechanisms, you might feel some grief for your old source of comfort, and that's okay! Recognize that it did help you feel safe when you needed that, and have compassion for your inner child.   Welcome to the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins (that's me!). My goal in this podcast is to share valuable and actionable tips on what I call the “Core Four” - mindfulness, movement, habits, and growth - so you can build a life that feels true to you. I will be interviewing people who have had a “wake up call” that their good-on-paper life wasn't lighting them up, and what they did to change that. Happy Satiated Saturday! Two decades ago, I was navigating being on and off diets, binge eating, emotionally eating, overexercising, and doing anything I could to run away from my body. My body was the place that was holding on to trauma and food was the answer to feeling regulated and safe. On my journey to healing my relationship with food and body, I explored yoga, multiple different therapeutic modalities, and experimented with various ways to eat to deepen into relationship and understanding of my body. Along the way, I received my Master's Degree in Somatic Psychotherapy and have now been working for over a decade to support others worldwide to find a safe, secure, and satiated relationship with food. A common theme I've found over the years is that almost every single person I've worked with - who was looking to decrease patterns of chronic dieting, binge and emotional eating, eating disorder behaviors, and body image concerns - had some kind of trauma in their past. Let's define trauma as anything that occurred too much, too fast, and there was no one around to help you regulate and know everything was going to be alright. I have seen gaps in the approach to supporting others to heal their relationship with their food and body, which has fueled me to explore what is actually going to guide others into a safe and regulating relationship with food. And this is how over the years Somatic Eating™ was created through all my clinical and educational experiences. In this week's episode, I talk about what Somatic Eating™ is, how it can support you in your relationship with food, what is explored in Somatic Eating™ and a special offer for those interested in joining my Somatic Eating™ Program (for free!) You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/what-is-somatic-eatingThe start of the Somatic Eating™ Program is coming up this next Friday! Psychologist Raja Selvam, discusses his new book, The Practice of Embodying Emotions: A Guide for Improving Cognitive, Emotional, and Behavioral Outcomes.  Raja is the creator of Integral Somatic Psychology™ (ISP™), an effective somatic therapy that encourages optimal mental health by fully embodying emotions. Raja and I explore how clinicians can facilitate patient resolution of difficult emotions by allowing increased recognition of emotion and then expanding that emotion to more of the body. Rather than cognitively down-regulating emotions, this somatic approach of expanding emotion increases affect tolerance and resolves systemic distress. ISP is a complementary modality for all talk therapy methods. It was an honor to dialogue with Raja about ISP and also our mutual interest in non-dual philosophy.Clinical psychologist Raja Selvam, PhD, is the developer of Integral Somatic Psychology™ (ISP™), an effective somatic therapy that helps clients achieve optimal mental health by fully embodying their emotions. Raja is also a senior trainer at Somatic Experiencing® International. His work is informed by Reichian Therapy and Bioenergetic Analysis, Bodynamic Analysis and Somatic Experiencing, and bodywork systems of Postural Integration and Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy. His work is also inspired by Jungian and archetypal psychologies, Kleinian and intersubjective schools of psychoanalysis, affective neuroscience, quantum physics, yoga, Polarity Therapy, and Advaita Vedanta (a spiritual psychology from India). He did trauma outreach work in India in 2005–2006 with survivors of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, based on which he has published an outcome study titled “Somatic Therapy Treatment Effects with Tsunami Survivors,” in the journal Traumatology in 2008. Dr. Selvam's work is also inspired by the work he did in Sri Lanka in 2012–2014 with survivors of war, violence, loss, and displacement, and with mental health professionals engaged in treating them, after Sri Lanka's thirty-year civil war ended in 2009.

Richard Hill and Matthew Dahlitz have written a comprehensive, definitively modern psychotherapy textbook titled, "Practitioners Guide to the Science of Psychotherapy". Their book covers basic neuroscience, body-brain systems, genetic processes and the application of integrative psychotherapy modalities for mental health disorders. This is the textbook I wished for many years ago when I attended graduate school. I was so excited to dialogue with these two brilliant men about the current sad state of standard psychotherapy, and the need for updated curricula and therapist retraining that rests upon scientifically validated patient-responsive treatments. This episode is a critical rallying cry in support of transforming a psychology/psychotherapy profession that fails to adequately meet the needs of so many patients. Richard Hill  is managing editor of The Science of Psychotherapy  magazine and lives in Sydney, Australia.  at 42 (1996) beginning with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in linguistics. In this episode, we hear from the amazing Randi Kofsky, LMFT, all about codependency in the body and how bodywork can promote our healing. Not only does Randi share her expertise as a licensed psychotherapist about her perspective on codependency, she also explains the negative physical consequences she's observed as a body worker. You'll hear Randi share about cranial sacral therapy and she walks us through a specific exercise you can use to help slow down and tune into your body! That thing attached to our heads that we tend to neglect to our detriment thanks to being overfocused on others and their needs.  Randi answers how codependency shows up in the body, how bodywork can help us heal from our codependency, and what bodywork looks like in our self-care practices.  Randi emphasizes how and why it is so important for codependents to connect with their bodies. Rathern than simply processing our thoughts, feelings, and actions in our head, bodywork can help us integrate our experiences in a more holistic manner through our body. Imagine going to talk therapy one time per week to “talk it out” and then going to a bodywork session to “roll it out.” It's a win-win given how cut off we are from our bodies. We end with Randi walking us through an exercise that we can take with us to practice connecting with our bodies.  It's a must-listen! Thanks for coming on Randi! Questions for you: What came up as you heard Randi's definition of codependency? How do you relate to Randil's examples of her codependency? What aspects of your codependency were you reminded of? How do you sense your codependency shows up in your body? What are the physical symptoms of your codependency? Where would you rate your level of connectedness with your physical body from 1-10? Why did you pick that number and what do you need to bring it closer to a 10? What did you notice while following Randi's steps to connect with our bodies via a cranial sacral method? How can you pay more attention to you body this hour? This day? And this week? It's a must to start to pay attention to our bodies! Thank you for listening! When we accompany clients on their healing journeys, we're bound to encounter new conflicts and confront reminders of our past traumas. It's these inevitabilities that Shelby's 1-to-1 coaching sessions and group programs make space to address. This is a very special episode with Beverley Kane, MD, discussing her book Equine-imity: Stress Reduction and Emotional Self-Regulation in the Company of Horses, which introduces us to somatic horsemanship—a therapeutic practice for exploring the physical relationship between humans and horses, on the ground and on the horse, to promote body-mind-spirit well-being in both species. Dr. Kane portrays horses as consummate teachers of healthy embodiment and emotional resilience and describes interventions like medical qigong that help patients learn how to regulate and heal nervous system and psychological dysfunction.  She tells us about somato-intuitive skills horses naturally use like presentiment and going back to grazing which we can model and implement to enrich our daily lives. This is an informative and enchanting dialogue to kick off 2022 with a heartfelt wish for total health.Beverley Kane, MD, is Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine and an integrative medicine physician in the Stanford Division of Primary Care and Population Health, Palo Alto, California. Handling some of the emotions that surface during coaching sessions can be a delicate process. Some instances may lead you to even suspect trauma in the life of a client. What a some signs a caring coach should watch for to know if referral to a licensed therapist is needed? What can a coach do within their own coaching scope to further help a client? In this episode, Jen Taylor, a licenced trauma therapist with numerous credentials and training in multiple techniques, shares her insights and tips. As Jen and I spoke, one important point stuck out to me that Jen really felt to be most important as well. That is: the relationship a client develops with you is paramount to success. This is true whether a client is dealing with trauma or not. But since trauma is usually experienced within relationship, so can healing be experienced within relationship. So the more you can positively connect with a client, the more you can help them heal and improve their life, which is the goal of all coaching. What You'll Learn How Trauma is Defined and some Red-Flags of Potential Trauma An unintegrated response to a physical or emotional stressor The nervous system's overwhelm that marks trauma Belief whether or not we had agency over what happened Survival brain hijacking Emotional and physical symptoms to watch for, tracking body movements How to Tell the Difference between Trauma and Normal Life Ups and Downs How quickly does the person recover from an upset? Does the person feel overwhelmed and powerless or do they feel they have agency? Is it impacting their daily life? How to Incorporate Help Within the Scope of Coaching Help clients develop the ability to be a witness of their own cognitive, emotional and somatic experiences (often referred to as decoupling) Increase curiosity to put distance between circumstance and response Encourage regulation and staying connected with self during disregulation The Top-Down Approach Versus the Bottom-Up Approach The brain creates thoughts and feelings and sends those down to the body; but the body also creates feelings and sends them up to the brain (how it is all interconnected) Using the body as an ally instead of an enemy Staying with the emotions that are coming up, creating space How to settle into, and make use of, a sensorial response Contact Info and Recommended Resources Meet Jen Taylor, MA, LPCC Jen is a somatic trauma therapist, specializing in EMDR Therapy, Sensorimotor Therapy, and Assisted Psychotherapy. In this episode, Janice explores that oh-so-common experience of getting triggered in the present due to past experiences of trauma, and how the activation of our fight-flight-freeze response in these situations can make it super challenging to stay calm and objective. She also discusses that we may have explicit memories of past traumas, but also implicit ones that we aren't aware of consciously. And she shares why it can be useful to learn how to discern between experiences where there is an actual threat to our safety, experiences where there is a valid concern but an additional layer of past wounding, and experiences where safety is there but we are unable to feel safe. This episode is part 3 of an ongoing series on healing trauma.*Please note that Janice is not a trauma expert or therapist, and that this series shares about her one personal experience of learning about and healing traumaRate & review the podcast on:Apple PodcastsPodchasersSpotifywww.TheSoulsWorkPodcast.comConnect with me:Instagram: @janicehoimagesFacebook: @thesoulsworkpodcastEmail: thesoulsworkpodcast@gmail.comListen to all The Soul's Work Podcast episodes: www.thesoulsworkpodcast.comGet the show notes here: https://www.thesoulsworkpodcast.com/s2-ep8-healing-trauma-part-3-getting-triggered-why-cant-we-just-leave-the-past-in-the-past/Resources mentioned in this episode:Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving (Pete Walker)Healing Developmental Trauma (Laurence Heller and Aline LaPierre) (the NARM model)MINDBODY SEMINAR: Introduction to Somatic Psychotherapy and Embodied Communication (Dr. Aline LaPierre)Tribal Theory – Nurturing One's Nature online event (Certified Listener's Society) (Barbara Allyn)Somatic Internal Family Systems Therapy: Awareness, Breath, Resonance, Movement, and Touch in Practice (Susan McConnell)@traumaawarecare on InstagramIrene Lyon

Kathy L. Kain, PhD returns to share her unparalleled expertise on effective use of somatic interventions in in-person and online psychotherapy. She gets very specific about what interventions work and don’t work, and the kind of patients that may benefit or be underserved when the medium of contact is screen-only. And Kathy gives in-depth analysis of the interplay of awareness and points of contact in somatic interventions; regardless of whether the clinician has physical contact with a patient or not. We also take a deep dive into the role of intersubjectivity in somatic work—the importance of viewing the patient as the expert, and how to skillfully navigate somatic counter-transference while keeping in mind the patient’s benefit and maintenance of therapeutic and relational connection. This episode is appropriate for both somatic practitioners as well as novices who may be interested in the mechanics of this work, particularly in the psychotherapeutic process. Here is the link to hear Kathy's first GG episode.Kathy L. Kain has practiced and taught bodywork and trauma recovery skills for nearly 40 years. She teaches in Europe, Australia, Canada, and throughout the United States. Kathy is a senior trainer in the Somatic Experiencing training program, an adjunct faculty member of Sonoma State University, and was a senior trainer for 12 years in the Somatic Psychotherapy training program based in Sydney, Australia.

And how is this therapy helpful for couples and individuals? Charon believes that our bodies hold to the key to our mental sexual stance. “How embodied are you?” she asks. “We withhold things in our physical body. Anxiety is a body memory of a time that we felt useless. You have issues in your tissues. So, asking yourself how ‘IN’ body you are, helps those issues in the tissues!”

Psychedelic-assisted interventions appear to be all the rage these days. Though there are many psychedelic evangelists I wanted to find a credible medical resource to discuss these treatments. Deep gratitude to my friend Ron Purser who introduced me to my esteemed guest, Sylver Quevedo, MD, a pioneer in integrative family and internal medicine, assistant professor of medicine at Stanford and UCSF, co-Founder of Polaris Insight Center for Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, and Principle Investigator in the FDA clinical trials on MDMA for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. Our conversation was enlightening and it was fascinating to hear about Dr. Quevedo’s long history of work in public health, his devotion to providing medical care for indigenous populations in the American Southwest and Africa, and his enduring personal and professional interest in clinical use of psychedelic plant medicines. He beautifully explicates the biologic mechanisms of psilocybin, MDMA, ketamine, ayahuasca, mescaline and how these substances differ in effect and usefulness in psychotherapy. Dr. Quevedo is limited in discussing outcomes of the current phase 3 MDMA trials but he shared results of previous MDMA for PTSD trials, as well as use of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy for end-of-life anxiety, depression, and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy for suicidal depression and chronic pain. When Ger was 9 years old, he found his father dead at home. Unable to process his grief, it would be shut inside for many years until Ger found his way, as a young adult, into a caring profession and gradually began to address his own inner landscape and wounding. His early experience of his father's sudden death and unexpressed grief caught up with him eventually and he developed stomach issues which lead him to discover Somatic Psychotherapy, opening a door into working psychotherapeutically with others. Ger talks to me about his personal experience of grief, how it unfolded in layers over the years and how a spiritual perspective can be a great resource for us in times of overwhelm. We talked about ways that we can manage the collective grief we feel about climate change and the environmental legacy we are leaving our children. Such a rich conversation with Ger Murphy on a range of grief perspectives and a little poetry woven throughout. Ger's website is http://www.iccp.ie. Join Beyond Speech: Limitless Communication with host Lauren Polly and guest Heather Nichols as they share discoveries of how to release your inner dragon and claim the potency you naturally be. About our guest Heather Nichols: Born and raised in California, Heather Nichols is a creator of magnitude, never taking ‘no’ for an answer. She has a capacity to see what she can add, create, tweak, change, and expand to make her life– and the lives of those around her– greater than imaginable. In 1996, Heather started a journey of studying and facilitating Somatic Psychotherapy, Tantra, Feminine Leadership, Nia (a mind-body movement practice), Kundalini yoga, and a wide range of other body-centered healing modalities. In 1997, she started her businesses after receiving her Master‘s degree in Social Work. Heather has owned a large movement studio and healing spa, run a private practice as a Psychotherapist, taught mind-body movement, and facilitated countless workshops and trainings in the field of transformation.  In the past 4 years, Heather has primarily worked with the tools of Access Consciousness, a body of work that creates change as quickly and dynamically as she always knew was possible. Today, Heather’s work is largely informed by the tools and practices of Access Consciousness, her extensive background in the healing arts, and her own personal willingness to do whatever it takes to effect change. She brings to her work a fierce commitment to create joy, ease, and wealth on the planet–in every area of life.  Find out more about Heather's creations and classes at www.heathernichols.com Lauren Polly has been working with folks with “communication disorders” since 2004 as a speech-language pathologist and it never ceases to amaze her how much people judge and beat themselves up for supposed mishaps in communication. “I never meant to say that.” “It came out wrong.” “I just don’t sound like myself.” Are some of the things she hears every day. What follows are stories of how the communication breakdown led to undesirable results – loss of friendship, loss of a business deal, an argument with a loved one, or just the sense that you didn’t deliver what was possible. What if there was a different possibility?  http://laurenpolly.com/
