In this blog post, we explore the concept of God as a business partner and how it can transform both personal and professional aspects of our lives. Meeting Cindy Isaac, LPC In a recent podcast episode titled "Episode 110: God as my Business Partner Series (1 of 4)," Dawn Gabriel had the privilege of interviewing Cindy Isaac, a licensed therapist and owner of a faith-based practice in Southern California. Dawn Gabriel sat down with the founder and CEO of Head First Health, Jenna Quinn Lancor, to discuss the spiritual side of hiking.  Meeting Jenna Quinn Lancor With a notable presence in the field of therapy, Jenna Quinn Lancor chatted brilliantly about the connections between spirituality and nature. Through her virtual group practice, Head First Health, her team specializes in treating millennial women dealing with anxiety, OCD, depression, and life transitions incorporating the mind body spirit approach. A truly holistic approach to mental health!  Conscious Collaboration Series at Head First Health Dawn was intrigued by Jenna's ‘conscious collaboration series', a monthly feature where they partner with a functional medicine doctor or holistic wellness practitioner to educate their staff about holistic health and well-being. It was heartening to see that Jenna's practice places such an emphasis on looking at a client holistically. "Sometimes even a more difficult outcome is the sort of disappointing experience. Cuz sometimes nothing happens, or from the life perspective, nothing happens. Or sometimes it's just kind of minimal and it's not the life-changing event that they were hoping that it would be." "For a lot of these substances, there's a natural derivative and then there's like a more, um, chemically altered type version of it. And often it's that second group that's used in the, um, like the clinical trial settings or in ibogaine clinics, in ketamine clinics and things like that." Um, but there's a lot of times when, um, you know, people will come in and we're talking about, okay, how do I take what I learned in this space and apply it to my daily life?" Um, it's not uncommon for somebody to, you know, have a deep spiritual practice and then have a psychedelic experience, and then their priority becomes a little bit more focused on, you know, sort of a direct relationship with the divine rather than the more structured kind of religious perspective."     Welcome to the latest episode of Soul Care for Therapists. In this episode, titled "The Transformation of Spiritual Direction," we have the pleasure of hosting Dan Kane, an experienced spiritual director who has been involved in Dawn's life for several years. Dawn Gabriel shares a bit about her personal journey in a school for spiritual direction. Dan, the leader of the school, started out as a civil engineer turned missionary engineer, and how his experiences led him to the practice of spiritual direction. Stay tuned till the end of the episode where Dan leads us into a guided spiritual exercise “The Practice of Being Know.”  Meet Dan Kane Dan is a spiritual director and supervisor who teaches with the Sustainable Faith Schools of Spiritual Direction. An enthusiast of Ignatian Spirituality, Dan has also been trained by Sustainable Faith to accompany individuals through the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises, a deeply formational journey for those hungry to grow in their experience of God. He is also a pilgrimage guide along the Camino de Ignaciano, a recently developed route in northeastern Spain that highlights the journey Ignatius of Loyola made in the year 1522 and invites modern-day pilgrims to a growing understanding of God's direction for one's life. Over the last 20+ years, Dan has served churches as an elder, staff member, and volunteer ministry leader, worked full-time with a few different mission organizations, and in 2022 began serving with InterVarsity USA as an Associate Director of Spiritual Formation. Understanding Spiritual Direction Dawn asks Dan to shed light on the difference between spiritual direction and Christian therapy. Dan refers to a definition provided by William Barry and William Connolly in their book The Practice of Spiritual Direction, saying, "We define spiritual direction then as the help given by one believer to another that enables the latter to pay attention to God's personal communication...to grow in intimacy with this God and to live out the consequences of the relationship." He emphasizes the importance of companionship and helping individuals become more aware of God's presence in their everyday lives. Spiritual direction involves noticing, exploring, reflecting, and responding to the ways in which God communicates and reveals Himself. Dan also highlights the focus on the present and the desire to become more like Christ through experiential encounters with God. Cultivating Heightened Awareness "Did you know that God is present in every moment of your life, even the ordinary ones?" It's true! To experience God's presence, start by paying attention to the small wonders around you. Notice the vibrant colors of the flowers, the gentle breeze on your face, or the laughter of your friends. As the speaker in the episode suggests, "When you're brushing your teeth or playing with your pet, remember that God is there with you, loving you and guiding you." By developing a heightened awareness, you'll begin to see the fingerprints of God in the beauty and simplicity of your everyday experiences. The Transformative Power of Spiritual Direction Dawn shares her personal experience of attending Dan's school, where she learned not only about spiritual direction but also engaged in experiential practices that deepened her intimacy with God. She explains that therapy often focuses on coping skills and rearranging the "furniture" in the lower room of our lives, while spiritual direction delves into the upper room of the soul, exploring the spiritual realm and experiencing God on a deeper level. Dawn expresses how her journey toward becoming a spiritual director has been transformational, not just informational. Dan expands on this distinction, saying that while knowledge and information about God are important, true transformation occurs when that knowledge shapes our encounters with and experiences of God. Spiritual direction aims to help individuals become more like Christ, cultivating intimacy, and living out the implications of their relationship with God. Through the episode Dawn and Dan explore the differences between knowing about God and experiencing God's presence.  Experience God with a Personal Connection The conversation emphasizes that experiencing God's presence goes beyond mere knowledge. It can be doing a service project, in a forest, on a walk, or having deep conversations with people. While knowledge about God involves understanding concepts and teachings through learning and study, experiencing the presence of God requires a personal encounter and direct experience. It surpasses intellectual understanding and touches the depths of our hearts and souls. Learning about God is like studying a beautiful painting, and understanding its colors and composition. Experiencing God's presence, on the other hand, is like stepping into the painting, feeling the warmth of the sun, smelling the flowers, and hearing the whispers of the wind. Where can you step into an experience with God?  Engaging in Experiential Learning Dawn reflects on the structure of Dan's teaching and the experiential nature of their learning environment. She describes how they engaged in exercises that facilitated a deeper presence before God, allowing space to notice thoughts, feelings, and even bodily sensations. Through this process, participants were able to share their experiences and learn from one another. Dan adds that this collective learning enhances the awareness of God's presence and communication, fostering a hunger for a more intimate and deep relationship with Him. Dawn recalls a particularly impactful exercise in which they listened to one another's stories, paying attention to how God had shown up in their lives. This exercise highlighted the importance of being listened to and receiving observations from others, helping individuals recognize God's presence in their own stories. Experiencing God Through Sharing Stories and Encounters Imagine the excitement of sharing your own stories of encountering God with others! When you open your heart and share these experiences, you not only inspire others but also deepen your own understanding of God's presence. It could be as simple as sharing a moment when you felt God's comfort during a challenging time or when you experienced joy and gratitude for the blessings in your life. By listening to other's stories as well, you'll learn to recognize God's hand at work in the lives of those around you. So, let your voice be heard, and let your stories of faith shine brightly! Experiencing God Through Seeking Spiritual Companionship Embarking on a spiritual journey is always better with a companion by your side. The speaker encourages us to find a spiritual director or a trusted mentor who can guide and support us along the way. This person can be someone you trust, like a teacher, a family member, or a community leader. They will help you understand and interpret your encounters with God, providing valuable insights and encouragement. Remember, you're not alone in this journey of faith. Additionally, we have accounts for income, operating expenses, and payroll." "The goal of the profit account is to pay you a dividend once a quarter and reward you for your efforts as a business owner." Spiritual direction is about intimacy with God, it's about relationship with God, and the relationship and the intimacy comes about through spending time with a spiritual director … a spiritual director [is not] there to tell you how to live your life, the word director is to do with your direction toward God and the main director in this conversation is actually the Spirit.  Episode number 24: Kent Denlinger On Spiritual Companionship. What some people know as Spiritual Direction is given a new angle through Kent who calls it Spiritual Companionship; walking alongside people to deepen their connections to deepen their relationships with God. Spiritual companionship is therefore about coming together as a community or in a relationship with other people, bringing honesty and authenticity, which in turn strengthens the relationship and the depth that they have with God. Episode number 51: Spiritual Conversations with Children with Lacy Finn Borgo. People experience moments of wonder and peace when they encounter God in themselves, through others, and in nature. Universally, people experience similar emotions to similar experiences, like being in a peaceful forest, seeing a grand mountain, feeling connected to a friend, and feeling validated. These moments can also be described as the fingerprints of God, as Lacy calls them, and they are the moments that people feel most connected to God when a sense of deep longing and peace is stirred within them. Episodes 32-35: Where Soul Care for Therapists introduced.  Even though soul care is different from therapy, it can be integrated into your current therapy regime. It is a lens of wellness that can be incorporated into how you heal emotional wounds and deal with issues. Soul care is caring for the whole person with a spiritual focus; mind, body, and spirit altogether. It differs from self-care because that is something that you can do on your own. Soul care occurs in relation to someone else who is guiding you in your communion with God and your religion. Episode number 43: Soul Care for Therapists Retreat. Are you a therapist who needs time and space to reconnect to yourself, your creativity, and to God? Do you seek communal spaces that are welcoming and healing with other like-minded therapists? How does spending time being quiet reawaken your creativity and intuition? The Busyness Trap As therapists and business owners, it's easy to get caught up in the busy trap and lose sight of what truly matters. But “This life is not for you.” We get so consumed with our work and the needs of our clients that we forget to take care of ourselves. However, as Dawn shares, it's important to slow down and listen to God's voice. She says, "I feel God wooing me back to say, Dawn, this busy life is not for you. Like I want a life of rest and soul care." Slowing Down for Soul Care Dawn acknowledges that slowing down is not easy, especially when you love your job and are passionate about helping others. However, she encourages listeners to take a moment to stop and listen to God's voice. She even shares a blessing and prayer that she wrote for busy therapists who are struggling to balance their work and personal life. She says, "We need you to calm our hurried hearts. The hustle can cause our spirits to deflate and our focus to get complicated. Will you usher in the wings of your strength? Will you calm our attitude?" Dawn emphasizes the importance of attuning to God's presence and tapping into the peace that He promises. As therapists, it's important to take care of ourselves and prioritize our soul care, so we can better serve our clients. Slowing down and listening to God's voice can help us find balance and peace amidst the busyness of life. A Pray and Blessing for the Busy Jesus, thank you for the gift of running our own businesses and the gift of entering into the deep waters of the lives of others. And while each season is special and beautiful in your timing, we acknowledge this current season of busyness. We desperately need the wisdom that can only come from you. In the midst of the rush, will you prompt us to slow down when needed? Will you woo us to a place of tenderness when we are overwhelmed, as you have given us your spirit to live inside us?     The Soul Care for Therapist podcast, hosted by Dawn Gabriel, recently featured Jessica Walsh, Ph.D., LPC and Hannah Davis, Ph.D., LPC, who shared their insights into supervising and training interns through licensure. The guests discussed how they started working together, creating their counseling practice, and their unique approach to supervision. Dr. Jessica Walsh and Dr. Hannah Davis are the co-founders and co-directors of The Forge Counseling Collective and the Training Institute at Forge where they run a counseling center alongside a unique program for interns and pre-licensed counselors. Starting out - Merging Skills and Combining Forces Jessica Walsh started Forge Counseling Collective about ten years ago and Hannah Davis joined her three years later. They met in their doctoral program in counselor education and supervision. They initially started working next to each other but eventually merged their skills to open a training institute. Hannah had started a small training program of her own and decided to move from another state and join Jessica's private practice. They both saw potential in each other and after realizing their skills were complementary, they decided to merge their practice and combine forces to create a training institute. The duo's partnership has now grown and is an excellent example of how a joint effort can yield significant results. High-Quality Supervision Model During the podcast, the duo explained the benefits of a high-quality supervision model, where both therapists and students receive the support they need. Jessica and Hannah shared how they have been recording and documenting their training sessions to ensure the process is supportive and effective. "We want to train people to not only be excellent therapists but to be good at running a business and understanding that those two things really go hand in hand." They recognize the importance of creating a safe space where therapists and students can show vulnerability without feeling judged. Supervision can be an intense process, and sometimes, students want to hide from feedback or avoid difficult conversations, which is why a safe space is crucial. "We try to create a culture where people feel like they can bring their whole selves, and not just the part that's trying to impress or be perfect, and that they can show up as they are and we'll work with that." Documentation and Feedback Jessica and Hannah also discussed the importance of documentation and feedback in their practice. "So documentation is really important because we can use it as a tool for reflection, but also to help us to give feedback." They record and document their sessions, which allows them to give detailed feedback to their students, encouraging personal and professional growth. Recording sessions also help the students understand how their clients perceive them and how they can improve their interactions. "The feedback that you get from your supervisor is really important because they can help you to improve your practice, and they can also help you to identify areas where you need to work on. "Additionally, the recorded sessions provide students with a resource that they can refer to when they need to review techniques or recall feedback given by their supervisors. Tips and Action Steps The discussion provided excellent insights into the importance of a high-quality supervision model and the benefits of recording and documenting sessions. For therapists looking to train interns, here are a few tips: Prioritize Emotional Safety and Support Supervision can be an intense and vulnerable process. It is essential to create a safe space where therapists and students can show vulnerability without feeling judged.     In this episode of Faith Fringes, Dawn interviews Betsey Mejas. Betsy is an EMDR consultant and the owner of the Abundant Life Christian Counseling group practice in Georgia. In this episode, she talked about integrating spirituality, overcoming failures, and God's plan and purpose.  About Betsy Mejas and Her Practice Betsy is the founding owner of Abundant Life Christian Counseling. She is passionate about training up the next generation of faith-based therapists. Her group practice currently has 11 team members and growing. Abundant Life serves people in Winder and Athens, Georgia. Betsy started her career journey as a social worker as a case manager for child welfare. She felt led to open Abundant Life Christian Counseling in 2018 after hearing her Pastore, Jason Britt, quote John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” Betsy and her team believe everyone deserves to live a more abundant life. Overcoming Failure and Being Vulnerable Betsy opens up about how she overcame a big failure in her life - being an ESL (English as a Second Language) kid who barely spoke English and running for student council in fourth grade, only to fail miserably. However, she learned from that experience and overcame her fear of public speaking to become a successful therapist who guest speaks at churches and trauma conferences. Overcoming failure is a common theme in personal development and self-help literature. Many authors argue that failure is an essential part of success and that it's important to embrace vulnerability in order to grow and learn from our mistakes. One book that touches on these themes is "Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead" by Brené Brown. In the book, Brown explores the idea that vulnerability is not a weakness, but rather a strength that can lead to greater connection, creativity, and resilience. She writes: "Vulnerability is not weakness, and the uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure we face every day are not optional. Our only choice is a question of engagement. Our willingness to own and engage with our vulnerability determines the depth of our courage and the clarity of our purpose; the level to which we protect ourselves from being vulnerable is a measure of our fear and disconnection" (Brown, 2012, p. 34). This quote speaks to the idea that being vulnerable and embracing failure is an essential part of personal growth and development. It takes courage to face our fears and put ourselves out there, but it's only by doing so that we can truly learn from our mistakes and overcome our challenges. By sharing her story of failure and vulnerability, Betsy is demonstrating this principle in action and inspiring others to do the same. God's Plan and Purpose Betsy shares how not getting into law school was devastating at first, but it eventually led her to become a therapist. She believes that God has a plan and purpose for everyone, and her journey has been a windy road, but she is grateful for where she is now. Betsy speaks about how she came to realize that not getting into law school was actually a blessing in disguise as it led her to her current career path as a therapist. She believes that everything happens for a reason and that God has a plan and purpose for everyone. This idea is supported by Dallas Willard, who once said, "God's plan for your life far exceeds the circumstances of your day." Betsy's own words echo this sentiment, as she reflects on her own journey and how it has led her to where she is today. She says, "I gained clarity later. When my first semester at the MSW program, I met an attorney that was changing careers because she found out that every time couples would come to divorce, she would try to mediate and get them back together... Where does God interweave with all that for you? It's a windy road." This quote highlights Betsy's belief that even though the path to her current career was not a straight one, it was all part of God's plan for her life. As I pondered in my car, overthinking why my therapist wanted me to call her, I quickly realized that this might be a slight trauma response because of my past experiences. God's Revelation to Me As I reflect on my journey, God revealed that no matter what happens, He's still there and He is good. Journal Prompts What are the things you look forward to this year? What do you want to accomplish? How do you implement what you've learned to achieve what you want this year to look like? Who are the people you want to surround yourself with?   Say This Prayer With Me Dear God, On this day I ask You to grant this request, May I know who I am and what I am, Every moment of every day.   May I be a catalyst for light and love, And bring inspiration to those whose eyes I meet. May I have the strength to stand tall in the face of conflict, And the courage to speak my voice, even when I'm scared.   May I have the humility to follow my heart, And the passion to live my soul's desires.   May I seek to know the highest truth And dismiss the gravitational pull of my lower self.
