Words That Shape Us: Rethinking the Language We Use in Relationships In this thought-provoking episode of the Human Intimacy Podcast, Dr. Kevin Skinner and MaryAnn Michaelis explore the powerful impact of the words we use in our relationships. From misunderstood terms like gaslighting, addiction, and defensiveness to therapeutic concepts like parts work, triggers, and intimacy, they unpack what these words really mean and why clarity matters. Drawing from decades of clinical experience, Dr. Skinner explains how language—used consciously or not—can either create emotional safety or reinforce shame and confusion. MaryAnn adds vivid examples of how common phrases and labels can trigger strong emotional responses, especially when they've been used harmfully in the past. The episode invites listeners to be more intentional about their communication—pausing to clarify meanings, owning emotional experiences instead of blaming others, and understanding the deeper messages behind the words. Listeners will come away with a richer appreciation of how language shapes healing, self-awareness, and human connection. Resources Mentioned in the Episode: Richard C. Schwartz, Internal Family Systems Therapy — foundational model for understanding "parts" of the self Brené Brown — referenced for her work on shame and how addiction is often about numbing and disconnection Key books: The Gifts of Imperfection, Daring Greatly Malcolm Gladwell, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking — explains unconscious decision-making and rapid intuitive responses Gavin de Becker, The Gift of Fear — explores how intuition and implicit memory keep us safe Joseph LeDoux — neuroscientist referenced for research on the brain's fear pathways and emotional processing (notably how we feel before we think) Dr. Kevin Skinner Treating Trauma from Sexual Betrayal PTSD Assessment for Betrayed Partners Denial and Blame Scale (early scale now recognized as assessing gaslighting behaviors) Seven Types of Intimacy course — mentioned in the discussion on redefining intimacy beyond sex Podcast Episode: Making Love and Other Non-Sexual Activities (December 2024 / January 2025)

Send us a textTODAY we're exploring what we mean when we talk about change in IFS therapy... what are the expectations around this and how much change is actually possible? And if there is an urgent agenda for change, a key thing to consider is: who inside our client, or ourselves, is leading this? We'll also discuss what clients self-report in terms of change. As usual, we'll give useful examples and tips; and because there's a lot to this topic there will be a part two coming soon.Emma E Redfern MBACP (Snr Accred) initially trained in humanistic integrative psychotherapy. In this episode, we're going to explore the power of being fully present with the painful emotions we experience and how, exactly, to do this (as well as how not to do it). This topic might seem like an oddly placed one in the midst of a season of episodes that's intended to be geared towards conscious relationships. And yet, the truth is that emotional opposites are intimately entangled. Painful emotions and pleasurable emotions are, in essence, two sides of the same dualistic coin. And that's why this episode is included here in the midst of a season about conscious relationships, love, connection, etc. Because to love more consciously we must bring more consciousness to all of our feeling experiences—the painful ones included.ResourcesFocusing ResourcesFocusing Therapy: The Classic Six StepsFocusing-Oriented Therapy Instructions (PDF guide)Focusing-Oriented Therapy One: Learning How the Body Speaks and Listening so it Heals (workshop)Podcast EpisodesEp. 92: Beyond Victimhood—Reclaiming and revealing your own inner HeroEp. 88: Healing Beyond Shame: How shame sustains shadow repression + how to disintegrate 'Shamewalls'Ep. 32: Spiritual Bypassing and the Fragmented SelfEp. 10: Triggered: Using emotional triggers as a roadmap to healingReclamation Radio by Dr. Kelly Brogan: Ep. 100—How to Stop Repeating Toxic Relationship PatternsBooksHow to Be Loving* by Daniella LaPorteHow to Do the Work* by Dr. Nicole LePeraThe Surrender Experiment* by Michael A. Our world is more magical than we know - more than we can know.  Increasing numbers of us are realising that the 'citadel theory of mind' where we see ourselves as isolated units within the boundaries of our own skulls is not how the world works.  But if it isn't, then how do we make sense of the worlds beyond consensus reality? How do we engage with the web of life and all that's around it in ways that are respect, reciprocal and generative? Robert (Bob) Falconer is a long time IFS practitioner and trainer.  He is the author or co-author of many books, including Many Minds, One Self which he co-wrote with Dick Schwartz, who is credited with founding Internal Family Systems Therapy. For me, this is the form of therapy that leans closest into spiritual work, particularly into shamanic work, and Bob's book, The Others Within Us: Internal Family Systems, Porous Mind and Spirit Possession is a ground-breaking work that blows open the fallacies of the citadel mind model and opens us to a wide spectrum of other realities in other cultures, all of which acknowledge the existence of non-human, non-embodied energies that have at least a degree of agency and that can interact with human beings in ways that are either to our benefit or our detriment. Very few are neutral. So as we hurtle towards the edge of a cliff, pushed by our culture's endemic inability to engage with our own traumas, talking to Bob seemed pretty much essential.  We talk quite a lot about IFS, which is Internal Family Systems therapy and at the start, we open up more of what that's about, though I do encourage you to read the book Bob co-wrote with Dick Schwartz.  We also - and this is a trigger warning - explore some of Bob's own life history of harrowing sexual and physical abuse so if this is likely to trigger parts of you, then please only listen when you're feeling grounded and well resourced.  Beyond that, we range far, wide and deep across the boundaries where science meets spirituality and philosophy meets psychotherapy, all of which is squarely in the area that I think needs most work, for all of us.  Bob's website: https://robertfalconer.us/Bob on YouTube https://robertfalconer.us/youtube-channel/Bob's Books: Out now: The Others Within Us: Internal Family Systems, Porous Mind, and Spirit PossessionOUT ON 22nd MAY 2025 - Opening the Inner World: Spiritual Healing, Internal Family Systems and Emanuel Swedenborg Co-written with Dick Schwartz: Many Minds, One Self by Richard Schwartz and Robert Falconer Other books Thomas Zinser Soul-Centered Healing Lloyd DeMause The History of Childhood  David Gordon White - Daemons are ForeverDreaming Awake Contemporary Shamanic Training: https://dreamingawake.co.uk Accidental Gods Membership https://accidentalgods.life/join-us/Accidental Gods Gatherings https://accidentalgods.life/gatherings-2025/

Send Me a Message! In the next chapter of My Therapy Reflections, I share a very significant IFS (Internal Family Systems) breakthrough that has reframed how I view some of my darkest moments. When life feels too loud and too bright (which is most of the time), I tend to mentally retreat, like hiding in a tunnel—a cold, dark place that where I sometimes I can sleep for days. But this session revealed something surprising: my internal parts weren't trying to trap me there like I had thought. They were waiting at the top, encouraging me to come back.Even my inner critic—the voice I've long seen as cruel and as my enemy—was there trying to help. Not to tear me down, but to shield me from a world I'm not built for. This unexpected shift helped me see that every part of me, even the ones I've battled with, have been trying to protect me in their own, unique way.I also uncovered a younger part of myself, frozen at age 15, holding trauma I hadn't accessed in years. That story continues in Part B. But in this episode, it's all about beginning to see your inner system not as broken, but as misunderstood. Maybe, like me, you'll start to feel compassion for the parts of yourself you once feared.Support the showTo support the show, CLICK HEREYou can follow me on Instagram: @elliot.t.waters

I'm Bryan Kam. I endeavour daily to make philosophy accessible and relevant. To that end I write this newsletter and host a podcast called Clerestory. I'm also writing a book called Neither/Nor and I'm a founding member of Liminal Learning. In London, I host a book club, a writing group, and other events. My work looks at how abstract concepts relate to embodied life, and how to use this understanding to transform experience.Recently, I had a conversation with Haneen Khan, a sex coach and fellow thinker, about the relationship between abstract thinking and embodied experience. The Nature of Abstraction and ExperienceWe began by discussing the academic paper which Isabela Granic and I recently submitted, which describes my philosophy Neither/Nor. The paper and the forthcoming book focus on the relationship between experience and abstraction, or theory and practice. The paper critiques what we term “latent Platonism,” an unconscious tendency to prioritize abstract, theoretical constructs over direct, embodied experience. This can reveal itself in conversation, for example, when sharing about an uncomfortable experience can lead an interlocutor to leap to broad generalizations rather than discussing the experience itself. The Need for Balance and AwarenessThroughout our conversation, we emphasized the importance of balancing abstract reasoning with experiential knowledge. Haneen and I agree that awareness is key — awareness of when we're gravitating too heavily towards abstraction at the expense of our felt experiences (or, less frequently, vice versa).Haneen shared valuable insights from her coaching practice, emphasizing the power of grounding practices that help individuals reconnect with their bodies and emotions. This balance, or oscillation as we've termed it, is crucial for a holistic understanding of the self.Abstraction, while powerful, can become a tool of escapism or avoidance if unanchored by embodied awareness. Maintaining a strong connection to one's felt experience, on the other hand, can enrich not only personal wellbeing but also interpersonal interactions.Integration: A Path ForwardWe concluded by emphasizing integration — a synthesis of experiential and conceptual wisdom — as a winding path forward. This integration offers a potential solution to the pitfalls inherent in each mode of understanding when pursued in isolation. Concepts like Internal Family Systems Therapy illustrate such an integration, offering a framework where conceptual understanding aids emotional and physical awareness.I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences on this topic: How do you navigate the balance between abstraction and experience in your daily life? Let me know in the comments.BryanP.S. If this conversation resonated with you, please share it with someone who might benefit from it. There are many pieces to a person we are not just one dimensional. We carry DNA biologically that connects us to generations past. You may have your mother's eyes or your father's hair. We also carry emotions like anger, pain, and confusion from trauma that we have been carrying around for years. This trauma can manifest into things like migraines, anxiety, depression and even suicide. When we are able to heal this trauma and recognize all our pieces or parts and integrate them the results can be transformative physically and emotionally. Tamala Floyd is a psychotherapist and author who is an expert in a model called Internal Family Systems. Finding "The Self": Exploring Internal Family Systems Therapy with Dr. Richard Schwartz

Have you ever felt like different parts of yourself were competing for attention and power? Maybe you have aspects of your personality that you're proud of, and others that you'd rather keep hidden from the world—the ones that tend to rear their heads in your not-so-shining moments. According to Internal Family Systems Therapy, a framework developed by today's guest, Dr. Richard Schwartz, we are all made up of sub-personalities or “parts.” IFS posits that by investigating and understanding where each of those parts come from and how they are dictating our current behavior, we can better understand our unique mental world and determine how to make change to support our healing and improve our relationships. Dr. Alexandra talks with Dr. Dick about how IFS has the potential to help individuals understand themselves, strengthen their romantic relationships, or even navigate the dating world. They also explore a question from a listener in Toronto who wants to feel more deeply understood in conversations with her boyfriend. IFS is a theoretical framework that has helped many folks, but as always, Dr. Alexandra encourages you to see what resonates with you in this conversation and what might be helpful to bring into your own processes of self-discovery and healing, and to your relationships. Relevant Links:IFS Institute: ifs-institute.comIntimacy From The Inside Out: https://ifs-institute.com/store/116No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model by Richard Schwartz, Ph.D.: https://bookshop.org/p/books/no-bad-parts-healing-trauma-and-restoring-wholeness-with-the-internal-family-systems-model-richard-schwartz/16396062?ean=9781683646686You Are the One You've Been Waiting for: Applying Internal Family Systems to Intimate Relationships by Richard Schwartz, Ph.D.: https://bookshop.org/p/books/you-are-the-one-you-ve-been-waiting-for-applying-internal-family-systems-to-intimate-relationships-richard-schwartz/18790456?ean=9781683643623Story on IFS from NPR's Morning Edition: https://www.npr.org/sections/shots-health-news/2024/10/25/nx-s1-5055753/parts-work-therapy-internal-family-systems-anxiety#:~:text=At%20the%20center%20of%20IFS,his%20book%20No%20Bad%20Parts.
