Why is this such an epidemic? We often label addiction as being about substances - drugs, alcohol - but what else are we addicted to? And, most importantly, what are other ways that people can tap into the longing for what they seek? Today my guest is Jake Yoder, and we are discussing the fairly controversial topic of marijuana and recovery. Jake shares his experience with it, why he decided to stop and how he did it. We also talk about a spiritual experience he had, harm reduction, and how to have a natural high.   This topic is a particularly complex one. In 12-step programs, there is a heavy focus on counting “sober time” and a lot of talk about complete abstinence over everything. What sober means and what “everything” includes is debatable. However, I do want to point out that the book “Alcoholics Anonymous” is specifically focused on alcohol. There is another program called Marijuana Anonymous that is focused on marijuana. At the end of the day, you need to decide what's right for you.   For the record, I am clear that I do not know what's right for anyone else. I do believe in harm reduction, which is what I practiced when I stopped drinking, but I also know that using marajuana can be a slippery slope for people with addiction and dependency issues. There are medicinal benefits however for a certain group of people, it becomes another substance that is used to manage emotions in an unhealthy way. For me personally it was another way to numb out and it was stunting my healing because I have learned that I have to feel it to heal it.   There was a lot to say about this topic and I feel like we left out a few very key components to this discussion, but that leaves room for you to make your voice heard! If you have any thoughts to share on this topic, please leave a comment on the Facebook page, shoot me a DM on IG @arlinaallen or @odaatpodcast and I'll address them in a following episode.    As always, I would like to thank you for supporting the podcast with reviews on Apple, donations made through odaatchat.com to cover production costs and by sharing the episodes with your friends. Your brain has a mind of its own and has one primary goal: to feel good. Did you know that your brain will control you subconsciously to do anything at all costs to avoid pain or displeasure? Your brain wants to feel happy, and happy feelings come from certain chemicals produced inside. Maybe you've heard of some of them: dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. Those chemicals get automatically triggered when you do something enjoyable. Other chemicals get automatically triggered when you do something…unenjoyable. Or painful. Or uncomfortable. Cortisol is what's known as a stress chemical, and your brain produces it to send a signal to the rest of your body that danger is close, so be on high alert- ready for a fight, or to run away, or to hide. It's a really useful chemical. But it doesn't feel good. And too much of it will make you feel worse and worse. Researchers have discovered that people feel physically and emotionally miserable when they experience those things. Even the IDEA of doing something unenjoyable triggers those unhappy chemicals. For example, the experience of being rejected by a friend is one of the most painful experiences anyone can have. Your brain is so keen on avoiding rejection that it can imagine scenarios and situations that might lead to feeling that awful feeling. It will anticipate people's reactions to things like your hair, your clothes, and the things you say, and before you even get around someone else, the chemical is already pumping. Remember, your brain wants to feel good and avoid feeling bad, but your brain can't do both at the same time—it has to prioritize one over the other. So, avoiding pain typically wins. Unfortunately, feeling good from the good chemicals gets turned off unless you become more aware of what's happening in your brain and become intentional. Here's where we get to the good news: Scientists have discovered that you can actually hack your brain system to be happier and healthier. You can choose to do certain activities to trigger happy chemicals to start flowing intentionally. We like to call them Natural Highs. A Natural High is an automatic response your brain has when you intentionally do something that you find enjoyable. Things like: Reading a good book Dancing to your favorite song Hanging out with your best friend Playing with your dog Practicing your guitar Riding your skateboard Telling a joke Creating a new video Baking chocolate chip cookies Bring a gift to a friend Going for a run Ironically, artificial substances can make you feel good, too. Certain substances like alcohol and drugs will flip a switch to turn off the bad chemicals and turn on the good. Unfortunately, they don't work for very long. On the one hand, the high doesn't last long. It expires. The uncomfortable feelings return. On the other hand, your brain gets tricked into believing it needs those substances to avoid feeling bad and feel good…all the time. Then, when the high stops making you feel good, most people feel…worse. Guilty. Remorseful. Maybe even rejected by their friends and family they love. Those are awful, miserable feelings, and since your brain has developed a pattern, it starts to believe that the only way to feel good again is…yep—more substances. It eventually reshapes how your brain functions and cuts off some of the critical developments your brain needs later in life, really important things like how to learn, make good decisions, stay motivated towards important goals, and connect with people you love. Back to the good news: you're in charge of how you feel more than you probably realize. By choosing to do something you enjoy, you feel more…joy. The more often and consistently you choose to do enjoyable activities, the more your brain will crave more…enjoyable activities. So here's the question: What brings you joy? What are your Natural Highs?

Derek Bowles knows a LOT about teens, addiction, substances, and the residential care kids sometimes need when local resources aren't working. Derek founded Crossroads Academy in Ogden, Utah over 13 years ago to serve as a place where adolescent boys who are struggling with substance misuse can get away from their home environment (and all that comes with it) and experience the power of getting high - naturally. One of the unique aspects of residential living at Crossroads is the adolescent boys participate in X-Game type sports as a way to connect with themselves, their bodies and their therapy team. Wakeboarding, skiing, mountain biking, rock-climbing and gym sessions are all part of the average day for these guys who are in the process of rebuilding their lives. In this episode you'll hear:why sometimes kids need to get out of their life for a while and go to residential treatment (and when they shouldn't)how to differentiate typical teen behavior and high-risk behavior like drug usethe two things that research shows works better than treatment and medicationwhy adventure-based treatment specifically is so effective with teenswhat to look for if you're considering out-of-home caretwo things Derek wishes parents would stop doingwhy parents have a hard time figuring out how much risk their child is inThis is a do-not-miss hour of conversation for parents of teens and young adults who are struggling with substance misuse behavioral challenges.Show notes: www.brendazane.com/hopestream/2If you're a mom who needs strength and support while your child is experimenting with, addicted to, or recovering from addiction, please join our private online community, The Stream, at www.brendazane.com/thestream.get my free ebook, “HINDSIGHT: 3 Things I Wish I Knew When My Son Was Addicted to Drugs"

This podcast is all about sharing positive advice and wisdom for daily life in recovery, and today we’re going to discuss nine different activities that provide a natural high. So, first of all, it’s important for me to note that chasing any type of high (either natural or drug-induced) can be dangerous and unhealthy, but a balanced lifestyle that includes endorphin-boosting activities can enhance your sober life. Although a drug-induced high is the one we need to avoid in recovery, certain activities can produce similar feelings of pleasure and euphoria without the use of drugs or alcohol. These activities work to create a natural high by influencing your body’s production of endorphins. Endorphins are peptides that are produced by the brain. They are often referred to as the “feel-good hormone.” They help reduce pain and increase feelings of happiness and positivity. Now that you know a little bit about how it works, here are nine natural highs you can enjoy in recovery. #1. Physical exercise #2. Laughter #3. Meditation #4. Music #5. Vanilla or lavender scents #6. Dancing #7. Volunteering #8. Massages #9. Sharing your recovery story

In this heartwarming conversation I talk to Avani Dilger, founder of Natural Highs, about the work she's doing to cultivate health in our community and throughout the world. We discuss:Why Avani dedicated her life to understanding drug use and addiction and to helping treat and prevent it. She wanted to know:"Why do beautiful people end on a path that can hurt them?” What is the internal thing that drives people to do destructive things?”How Avani's experiences with altered states through dance fit into her understanding of addiction. How her experience with dance speak to the experience of craving, seeking, and despair. Why she chose to study “alternative forms of psychology”?How the work of Christine Caldwell, a pioneer in somatic psychology - helped Avani reach a body centered approach to working with addiction and helped her understand how addictive dynamics show up long before people ever use drugs and how we can address those issues early on.What she learned from working at traditional addiction centers:We explored the relationship between substance abuse and the justice system, the criminalization of substance abuse. How Natural Highs got startedAvani started listening: When people use substances, what are they actually looking for? What’s underneath? Avani had conversations with kids and adults and understanding what they were looking for.“Substance abuse is complicated and complex and we need to come to this topic with humility. The reason we’ve been so successful in connecting with people who are struggling is because we don’t pretend we have all the answers. It’s more about collecting the building blocks that are helpful to people. The program is not a finished thing, it’s a living process."So some of the things they do in the Natural Highs programs includes:Hosting Sober RavesOpen MicsStarted a Record Label. The Importance of Rituals:The Yerba Mate Ritual: Avani incorporates the sharing of Yerba Mate as central part of the Natural Highs programs because a big part of addiction is not just the chemical substance, but is the ritual. People can’t imagine not doing something that’s so tied into their social life. The gesture of a ritual: handing something to someone.“It’s not the drug that gets people together, it’s the ritual and we can be more creative with that”The Rituals in our modern lives are often not healthy. How can we create healthier rituals for ourselves in our lives? Rituals are important because they can provide a sense of safety. The Number one most important thing youth and adults want to get out of Natural Highs: Learning about Brain Chemistry.People want to understand how their brain and bodies work and don’t usually have an opportunity to learn. Natural Highs doesn’t tell people whether or not they should take drugs, but rather says “this is what the drugs do to your brain and body, you decide what to do.”Over 85% of participants say they either decrease their use or stop their use of substances. What are people looking for when they take substances: altered consciousness and spiritual experiences. Natural Highs acknowledges the intelligence behind the impulse to change our perception and experience of consciousness. Learn how to change your state of mind without hurting yourself. Learn how to do it in a way that can allow for shifting consciousness long-term.We discuss how sex and love are related to drugs. We explore the difference between seeking growth and transcendence and the desire to escape and the reality that all of us have both of these impulses within.“The moment you name something and make it okay a space opens up for you do something with it.”Natural Highs includes classes around mental health issues like anxiety and depression. What is anxiety and how can you work with it?Now they have more people coming to the Natural Highs programs who are coming because they’re interested in learning about anxiety and depression. The next phases for Natural Highs… expansion of the program globally. To Learn More or Support Natural Highs Please Visit their website.
