Remember that sense of delight and wonder you'd get when you'd force your parents to stop off at a fast food restaurant, reach into a bag containing foods that would slowly come to destroy your body over the intervening decades, and pull out a tiny plastic symbol of the power mass consumerism held over the youth of a generation? Well we do, and we're excited to talk about it! That's right, The Hill Is Always Greener is looking back at the history of Sonic the Hedgehog fast food toys! From Sonic 3 the game to Sonic 3 the movie, and from windups to LCD games to "here's some cardboard, make it yourself", we cover the breadth of Sonic's kids meal collectables over the last 30 years! People don't always say what they mean, and things are not always what they seem. For example, we could say "the Sonic Underground episode 'Friend or Foe', Knuckles' first appearance in a western Sonic cartoon, is terrible and nobody should watch it." But what we actually mean is "we and special guest Green Bones Dommy watched this terrible episode, and had a blast laughing at its ridiculous animation, its often nonsensical plotting, and the Sonic franchise's all-time wolf-face power couple." So grab a plate of Krupnik and join us for our first ever look back at Sonic Underground...for better and for worse. (0:00:00) Intro/Main topic: Sonic Underground - "Friend or Foe?" I know fan characters are VERY touchy when it comes to copyrights. BUT if Sega themselves make an official "fan character", do you actually have access to possibly bring them to the IDW Sonic comic? Andrew D. After the events of Worlds Collide rebooted Sonic’s multiverse, I recall the idea of a multiverse getting scrapped due to issues with the real-world ownership of the Cosmic Interstate. Then we winded up getting some sort of multiverse with various Capcom and Sega franchises in Worlds Unite. Can you share or explain how the multiverse, or whatever it was, worked after the reboot? Did Blaze’s World exist in its own multiverse alongside the other franchises? Diane W. When the Council of Acorn, apart from Rotor and Uncle Chuck, chose to side with Naugus despite the fact that he is clearly the bad guy, were they all brainwashed into letting him become king and siding with him purely out of fear? And was there going to be a story where the council gets disbanded for arbitrary siding with someone like Naugus, as well as refusing to allow the Freedom Fighters to go out on missions, even though permission was never required in earlier issues, as well as other consequences like, for example, Tails having a major falling out with his mother for betraying him and his friends? Standard Q&A Valri Can the phantom ruby create other phantom rubies? Then you can be like Oprah and go "You get a phantom ruby! And you get a phantom ruby! EVERYONE GETS A PHANTOM RUBY!” ErrantHarpy You mentioned that you pitched Marine in IDW, but were shot down. Is Sega just done with her, do you know? Ever since Sticks showed up and looks so similar it’s like they forgot she existed. Did they give you a reason you’re allowed to disclose? I just miss her! DevyKun I realize I'm maybe stepping into sizzling grounds here, but I have to ask. In the midst of the Zombot Apocalypse, as I'll call it, why haven't G.U.N gotten involved, much less go after the high-speed carrier, Sonic? Frazmatron Did you ever talk with any of the original writers of Sonic Underground for the epilogue in Lost Hedgehog Tales or is what will be in there all from you? DivineBlood ...Is...Miles Prower=Miles Per Hour... Really a thing? Because...my brain is leaking out of my ears…

I know fan characters are VERY touchy when it comes to copyrights.

Do you know if Tails Adventure for the Game Gear is considered canon to the games? If so, which version? Apparently the Japanese manual for the game implies it's a prequel that took place before Sonic and Tails met, that Tails actually lived on the island, and that the Chaos Emeralds had been said to have been hidden there since ancient times. The Western manual however said that it took place in the present day (well, 1995), and that Tails was just taking a vacation by himself. That seems to be the version that you were adapting in the comics, but would that version be canon to the games timeline too? Also, did you ever plan to include T-Pup turning into a submarine in the comics, like he can in the game? Because when I played the game for the first time after reading The Tails Adventure in Sonic Universe, I was rather surprised when that happened. Andrew D. On Twitter you mentioned that Sonic Spinball was not canon. Was that officially stated by SEGA, or is that an assumption? What other Sonic games are not canon? While I understand we can’t speak for him, Aaron Webber has been known for saying “Everything is canon”, so now I’m curious. Arryn If you didn’t go into comics, what would you have done? STANDARD Q&A BlueStreak Do you think it will ever be possible to see merchandise based on the IDW Sonic books? i'd love to see figures, T-shirts, and plushes made for it. Anonymous I understand you take part in creating show called Sonic Underground. I saw this show a couple of times as a kid. But the fact that it was cancelled and left unresolved leaves me completely heartbroken and it drives me crazy not knowing how it could end. I’m not asking you to restart the series but just to finish off from the first series. Thank you. Rippl3r Why didn't you cancel Sonic Underground sooner? James M. We’ve got the need for speed, and only the furry blue spiked one can get the job done! It’s our first video game adaptation and we went for the weirdest, goofiest, most gosh dark rock-n-roll-est show we could get our hands on, 1999’s Sonic Underground! Hope you’re ready for sick guitar riffs, laser blasting drum beats and, of course, fog spewing organ solos…(?) because this ain’t your daddy’s Sonic! Morgan is somehow even sicker this week, hacking her lungs out (apologies misophoniacs!), but she’s a flippin' pro and showed up for the recording anyhow. This blazing fast episode also features talk of our new Gin Blossoms podcast spinoff, a retrospective of 90s kids television commercials, and there’s some bashing of the good name of Stephen Urkel. Plus Morgan tests her knowledge of Mortal Kombat (and video games in general), while Mike recalls his days deep in the punk rock scene. Quick! Give this episode a SPIN! In that epically 90's theme song for the Sonic the Hedgehog SatAM cartoon, Sonic is similarly described as being "The fastest thing aliiiiiive!" So who would win if the two raced each other? STANDARD Q&A Jesus A. If you were to make an adaption of X4, X5, & ,X6, what would you do? A. Have X, & Zero go through the same adventure, since they have their own paths. B. How the Space Colony Eurasia crashed on Earth. C. How would you write Zero's resurrection in X6, but somehow stay true to the original storyline, but add some details. Dark_vengeance0 I know I brought up Sonic Underground before but can we expect an IDW version of Aleena the Hedgehog to appear in the new comics. Diligentdodo BumbleUmbleChumbleKast! We all know Ian loves to work lyrics from Sonic theme songs into IDW, and I was wondering, if Whisper and Tangle had theme songs what would they sound like? Ernest Panda Do you have stuff like game timelines, general lore, and world maps planned out for IDW Sonic? If so for the timeline part, how much does it differ from post-SGW Archie? Are there any games left out? Are any of them in a different order than before? TheTriforceKid Curious to know which of the Supposed "Mandates" by Sega you actually intend to obey, since you've broken every single one you've mentioned in the past. You'd think SEGA would be pretty pissed at you adding characters to the lore who don't exist, as per their so-called "mandate"?

The NFL playoffs chugga chugga chug along. Parker and Chris split their picks 2-2 last week, meaning both of them got to endure punishment. Chris got to watch 2 episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh, and Parker was lucky enough to bare witness to 2 episodes of Sonic Underground. Oh also we talk about this weekends football games. But mostly anime.
We bask in the nostalgia of 3 classic Saturday morning TV themes in this week's episode, and by “classic” we mean “where they just literally described the plot of the show you were about to see.” Along the way we question the wisdom behind elements of these shows, but above all WHO thought it would be a good idea to make a kid's cartoon out of a TROMA movie??? You thought our mammoth Sonic talks were over? Not by a long, LONG shot. Chris returns to not only dish out his thoughts on notable games in the series, but things get truly beefy when he and John both tackle every official Sonic cartoon to hit the airwaves. See where their opinions differ on things like Adventures and the anime OVA, unite in Underground's awfulness and X's boring-ness, argue about certain points on SatAM, and Boom's self-aware nature. As a bonus, John blows Chris's mind regarding voice actors on almost all of these, and we cap things off both with an announcement regarding the show's future direction and a simultaneous watch of a cringey fan video that leaves Chris flabbergasted and John laughing harder than ever before. 1999 Sonic underground that had nothing to do with any other Sonic game or show and who are his siblings?
Welcome back to the show! This week we are joing by the wonderful Jake Mason (@jj_mason on the twitters) and he's going to help us talk about Digimon Adventure. That's it, that's all we talk about. At no point to we talk about Archibald Peck or Sonic Underground. Like at all. Nope. Nuh uh. This week we watched Digimon Adventure Episode 13. Music on the show is Jackpot by TheFatRat.
Everyone knows Uncle Chuck is Sonic from the future. The real question is: what does he want? (Let's be honest: the answer is probably chili dogs.)
This episode features a record three (3) special segments. Tune in if you like news, storytime, or Adam Sandler's greatest film.
Caleb and Nick have been really busy playing Pokémon, but they take a break from their Alolan vacation for you, friends, and return to their day job in Mobius.
Last week was rough, folks, but this episode of Sonic Underground is here to help. The silly and the serious co-exist within Sonic, and in our conversation. It’s never been a better time to talk about dystopia.
Sonic Underground quadruples its costume budget in the fourth episode, and Nick and Caleb are here to tell you about all the what-nots and say-yeses they have to offer. Guest Starring everyone's favorite Robo-VP.
Gather round, kiddos, and listen while Sonic Underground reveals the solution to all of your problems: stealing. That's right! Thievery will get you everywhere. It helps to have good type coverage in your hedgehog party, too.
Do some stretches and warmups before this episode, because it's time for a TRAINING MONTAGE! The triplets master the arts of spinning and jamming. Nick and Caleb try to make sense of an overwhelming amount of detail.
Nick and Caleb, podcast babies and your best friends, discuss one of the masterpieces of our time: Sonic Underground. Put the kids in their robocribs and hold onto your triple-necked guitar, folks, because Sonic's saving the world with the power of MUSIC.
The fifth episode of Toad on Games, guest starring two good friends of mine - @DoDaniel93 and @FBFDann - previously of Final Boss Fight, and currently of Big Boss Battle. Also, make sure to hit up our guests on Twitter! Opening theme created by the wonderful FearofDark - grab him @FoDSteve!
On episode 9 of Film Focus, I discuss my hopes and fears for the upcoming 2018 Sonic the Hedgehog film. Even though the major announcement of Sonic's jump to the big screen was made back in 2014, there hasn't been any major talk about it since, and since the very concept of it being a live-action/CGI hybrid just troubles me to the core, I thought it'd be an interesting topic to bring up for the podcast. P.S. During the portion of the episode I made a verbal mistake about Sonic Underground saying that Sonic had brothers, instead of saying siblings as I am aware he has a brother and sister haha.
