To celebrate our 7th anniversary, This week's guest is someone who was in my top five of dream guests when I started this podcast. Corey Glover is the lead singer of the Grammy-winning band Living Colour. The band's music has been a big part of my life since their landmark debut album, Vivid, came out in 1988. The double platinum album featured the song, Cult of Personality. It's one of the greatest hard rock songs of all time. Surprisingly, it wasn't the first single. Corey actually gives props to Epic, their record company for that decision. The song has a place in pop culture, most notably by CM Punk, the wrestler has used it as his entrance music for over a decade now. Corey's latest project is the band Sonic Universe. The band feature guitar Mike Orlando from Adrenaline Mob. Their debut album, It is what it is, drops on Friday. It's fantastic! Living Colour is still going strong as well. They're have shows this summer and new music should be coming next year.

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersCorey Glover has long been recognised as one of the finest vocalists of the modern era thanks to his role as frontman for Living Colour. It would be both easy and understandable for the singer to remain in the comforting confines of Living Colour, where his vocal prowess will always be beyond reproach, but Glover has never been one to rest on his laurels.Teaming up with guitarist Mike Orlando from Adrenaline Mob, Glover has started a fresh, vibrant project called Sonic Universe that allows him to display his chops in a different environment, with different musicians, to no less overall effect. If the two lead singles I Am and Higher are anything to go by, Sonic Universe sees Glover step into more hard rock territory, with both songs an extension of his work with Living Colour without rewriting the rulebook to excess. With Sonic Universe's debut album It Is What It Is scheduled for release on May 10, HEAVY scored some Facetime with the legendary vocalist to chat about his new project and more."All these songs are pretty personal," he began. "This song Higher, for example, is Mike's ambition at making a metal Gospel tune, and he got the right people to do it, I guess (laughs)."We ask Glover to tell us more about Sonic Universe and how it came to be."Me and Mike met on a cruise, on the ShipRocked cruise, we were both stowaways on that," he laughed. "I saw Mike playing and his guitar playing was like 'Holy Shit, who is that dude?' I was like, I gotta meet this guy, so I met Mike, and it turns out we all have a bunch of mutual friends, and we know a bunch of people so it was like 'look, let's get together and do something at some point'. And that was just before the pandemic. Some time after that, we got together. I would go to his place and studio called Sonic Sound, and we just banged out a bunch of tunes over the course of two years."In the full interview, Corey discusses Sonic Universe in greater detail, runs through each track on It Is What It Is individually and tells us more about it, why they decided to introduce the world to Sonic Universe with the song I Am, the album from a musical perspective and what they were going for, touring plans and more.

From TheTriforceKid: "Here's my beef with Ian Flynn and the words that fall out of his face-hole; He lies. He lies a LOT, especially about his "love" for Sally Acorn and the Knothole Freedom Fighters. You seem like an intelligent fellow, so I'll ask you this question. If someone TOLD you "I love the freedom Fighters, I LOVE Sally!" BUT, despite SAYING this repeatedly, he doesn't show it. Instead, he puts them through heck in a handbasket. He kills off Sally 3 times (Once during his fan days where he has someone blow Sally's brains out rather graphically in a fan-comic), by having her shot to death off-screen and then sacrificing herself, then Ian had her modified in canon to the point she COULDN'T Be deroboticized (The lore of the universe of Archie-Sonic clearly stated that Roboticization could only be reversed as long as the Robians ORIGINAL PARTS were still intact and UNMODIFIED), meaning folks like Bunnie couldn't be deroboticized because her parts had been replaced by cybermetics after her body began rejecting the roboticized limbs of her body. He also had Antoine rendered Comatose, broke Rotor's back, and then had Bunnie De-roboticized via the Genesis wave, ruining any poignancy or agency the character had, taking away a character with disabilities from the fan-base for NO reason other than he can't write within the confines of what came before him (A true professional in the comic industry would be able to retcon a universe without ruining parts of a character that made them unique or gave the character's existence a level of poignancy that otherwise wouldn't exist without the adversity the character had to go through. In Bunnie's case, she was roboticized against her will and saved at the last second by Sonic, and thus, instead of weeping and moping and being down on herself over it, she turned those robotic limbs against their creator and used them to help the Freedom Fighters. I ask you again; Would someone who LIVES the Freedom Fighters put them through so much pointless pain and suffering? Would someone who loved Sally Acorn have her graphically killed in their "Fan" comic, and then, once they get an actual gig working for Archie, kill her off TWICE MORE in two alternate timelines (Sonic Universe and the main timeline)? Would someone who LOVES the Freedom Fighters reduce Bunnie to little more than arm-candy for Antoine? Would someone who LOVES the freedom fighters have Rotor's back broken so he's less useful than he ever was prior to the incident? WOuld you believe someone who told you "I love the Freedom Fighters" after doing all of THAT to them? I sure as hell wouldn't. Actions speak louder than words. Ian Flynn RUINED all of that because he couldn't stand that he had to work with the SatAM team and all the lore that had been established prior to him becoming the lead writer for the series. It didn't help that MIke Pellerito (The shifty skinflint) was the one responsible for the writing in of "The Slap" we all hate so much. He knew nothing about the characters or their personalities or their interactions over the last 25 years the comic had been in publication. IN fact, his editorial Debut WAS "The Slap", and everyone else denied having anything to do with writing it while Mr. Pellerito remained awful quiet about it, because nobody was blaming him, they were blaming everyone BUT him for it. It has been claimed that Retconning the entire universe was Mike's idea, and FLynn was all-too-happy to destroy decades of what came before him so he could write whatever bullcrap he wanted to without those other "pesky creators" contributions to the work getting in his way of making Sonic what HE wanted it to be." Would you have Sonic and friends be morally conflicted about killing the Black Arms? Obviously in the game they don't seem at all bothered by slaughtering aliens en masse, but do you think that's consistent with their characters? AwesomeCakester What character did you dislike, or even flat out hate in any media that at some point, whether it be through a different interpretation or just a reworking from the source material, you changed your opinion on to be an alright character or even becoming your favorite? Scurvy Piratehog (Kofi) After taking a look at the solicitations for the upcoming issue 45 of IDW sonic, it made me wonder...the overall premise ( and the apparent absent of Sonic) makes it seem more fitting for a mini-series or a Sonic Universe like book... so.. overall my question is this. Do you think the IDW sonic series could benefit from having it's own Sonic universe style book? With how well the comic is doing and how many people love it, I'd assume there is a market there for it, but what do you think? DianeLionheart While were still on the subject of the Deadly Six, which of Sonic's friends would have their own rivalry with each of the DS? Speed Weed So now that Metroid Dread has risen back from the 20 year cryostasis that was its rumored development hell, what are your hopes and expectations from it? What did you like out of the reveal trailer? Anything that kinda rubs you the wrong way? Most importantly, what do you think of the EMMI robots? Scruffymatt I apologise if this one's been asked before - it feels like the kind of question Ian's probably answered, but I didn't see it on the Q & A master list. We all know there was some really shoddy work done on the ArchieSonic comics prior to Ian taking the writing reigns in issue #160 - let's not dwell on that stuff. But there was some really fantastic work done in the book before Ian too. So my question for you both today is: what are some of your favourite issues, story arcs or moments from ArchieSonic, pre-Birthday Bash? Fionan M. If angle island was never on earth dose that mean there was just a giant ring in sonic adventure some where on the train track and that's how they can get from station spare to mystic ruins. Fresh off the victory against the evil skeleton pedophile known as PlasmaMasterDon, we dive back into the deep, dark, murky waters of YouTube to wallow in the filth of the internet once again.  Episode 5 of Pop Uncultured features an eclectic variety of dirt-videos-for-idiots.  A buffet of buffoonery, if you will.  A smorgasbord of scum, as it were.  A potluck of piss, one might say.We begin our night with a classy joint from the world famous motion picture, Creating Rem Lezar, and pivot into one of our favorite high-functioning autistic/pro skater caliber Sonic enthusiasts, Metro Sonic.  We follow that up with YET ANOTHER aspie-riddled hedgehog-lover who has painstakingly crafted a complex sexual abuse world within the Sonic Universe, and even injected himself into it as the thick-slabbed muscle-Chad alpha-dog on the block, subjugating cartoons and pretend-people through tyranny of will and rippling ass-meat.  I'm a big fan of hyphens today.Yet all of this - while incredibly entertaining - pales in comparison to our final subject of the night, and the sheer magnitude of his mental illness(es).  Thanks to the diligence of the /R/DeepIntoYouTube subreddit, we stumble upon a God amongst men, a king amongst paupers, a psychosexual sadist country music star amongst...not that.  Employing all of the tricks of the trade, we don our detective badges once again to unravel the mystery of UNCL RODG (no E, don't forget the D).  I'd say he needs to get help, but I don't think they provide counseling services where he is now. Also there's a sad trollop and her channel's gay.Timestamps07:58 Dreaming of a Dream by Mark Mule https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWU-SqPUO_013:50 Crazy Skateboard Stunts & Epic Fails by Metro Sonic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDuRWJGpvEw29:59 Dani G's channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVKvxWyNLcNisqeODiKLa3w30:26 My St. Patty's Day at Home by Dani G https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeK1jSbOisA32:55 Click on Link Below for Collab Video by Dani G https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlymDyya_vY33:58 #FaceMaskFail by Dani G https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HaYvhF3O-E&t=102s36:00 Sonic Underground: School Days Field Trip by Tamers12345 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJxwkRzvb9w52:58 Tamers12345 Intro Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kb2rrKJwzfY&feature=emb_logo54:00 Tamers12345 Voice Acting Demo Reel (Dark Knight) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zo9YW_7w6Gk&t=26s55:59 UNCL RODG channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfR6kxSjlKjZA-axp6bszoQ56:08 Rollin' in the Hay by UNCL RODG https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRB7NLdQ7WE1:08:01 Tears in her Coffee by UNCL RODG https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dM3FkhkuNBc1:09:53 UNCL RODG Facebook https://www.facebook.com/UNCL-RODG-1057441981030508/1:10:52 Old Curmudgeon on Star Wars by UNCL RODG (FB) https://www.facebook.com/unclrodg/videos/320547265059462/UzpfSTEwNTc0NDE5ODEwMzA1MDg6MTM4NjAzNTAxODE3MTIwMQ/1:14:52 Daddy's Thumb is NOT Porn by UNCL RODG (FB) https://www.facebook.com/1057441981030508/videos/1287716528003051/1:15:22 Daddy's Thumb homepage by UNCL RODG http://daddysthumb.com/1:16:46 Daddy's Thumb trailer by UNCL RODG (explicit) http://daddysthumb.com/trailer.html1:24:47 The internet detectives put on their fedoras...m'ladies.

If either of you owned the rights to the Sonic franchise, what changes would you implement to the games, comics, shows, etc? Note: For the comic, I’m not asking for upcoming plans. This would be more like things out of your control such as the way characters are handled, ideas you aren’t allowed to use, extra books like Sonic Universe was for Archie, etc. IanWaffles Ian, going back to your pre super genesis wave run on the Archie comics I noticed that the way you wrote Sonic seemed different from the way you’ve written him since. Sonic is much more aggressive, arrogant, and hot headed. He is much more likely to resort to violence like running across the continent to ram into Eggman and then laughing about it or threatening Eggman with a 5 minute head start. Of course Eggman is a villain, but it’s a very sharp contrast to his usual light hearted attitude in your later comics. Sonic was also egotistical in the case of the Tails and Fiona situation. He’s very often scowling or annoyed with friends and foes alike, and very often undermines authority and boasts about it. I wanted to know what was your reasoning for taking the character in this direction or was this never your intention in the first place? Either way I think it gave the character an nice level of depth to balance out his usual attitude, so thank you. Scruffymatt Hey fellas, I hope you're having a good podcast. :) While recently watching our friend Syn streaming Sonic Adventure, I noted what a powerful and iconic moment it is when Sonic transforms into Super Sonic for the final boss fight. I think that it may just be the best Super Sonic transformation moment in any of the games - Sonic Adventure 2's transformation sequence is memorable, but for entirely different reasons. :P So I was wondering: what are some of your favourite memorable and iconic moments from the Sonic games? Standard Q&A Michael B. -I know that it's highly unlikely that this would ever happen given Sega's somewhat strict guidelines. But I would love to see some interaction between humans and mobians that are not just sonic and co visiting the planet. Maybe their could be mobians that settled on the human planet?

Do you know if Tails Adventure for the Game Gear is considered canon to the games? If so, which version? Apparently the Japanese manual for the game implies it's a prequel that took place before Sonic and Tails met, that Tails actually lived on the island, and that the Chaos Emeralds had been said to have been hidden there since ancient times. The Western manual however said that it took place in the present day (well, 1995), and that Tails was just taking a vacation by himself. That seems to be the version that you were adapting in the comics, but would that version be canon to the games timeline too? Also, did you ever plan to include T-Pup turning into a submarine in the comics, like he can in the game? Because when I played the game for the first time after reading The Tails Adventure in Sonic Universe, I was rather surprised when that happened. Andrew D. On Twitter you mentioned that Sonic Spinball was not canon. Was that officially stated by SEGA, or is that an assumption? What other Sonic games are not canon? While I understand we can’t speak for him, Aaron Webber has been known for saying “Everything is canon”, so now I’m curious. Arryn If you didn’t go into comics, what would you have done?   STANDARD Q&A BlueStreak Do you think it will ever be possible to see merchandise based on the IDW Sonic books? i'd love to see figures, T-shirts, and plushes made for it. Anonymous I understand you take part in creating show called Sonic Underground. I saw this show a couple of times as a kid. But the fact that it was cancelled and left unresolved leaves me completely heartbroken and it drives me crazy not knowing how it could end. I’m not asking you to restart the series but just to finish off from the first series. Thank you. Rippl3r Why didn't you cancel Sonic Underground sooner? James M. Hey Kyle, do you wish a second Spaceballs happened?
